Das Institut fr Landschaftsarchitektur (il a) versteht sichals neue akademische Forschungs- und Lehrplattforman dereth . Lehre und Forschung bauen einerseits aufklassischen, analytischen Methoden auf, andererseitsleiten sie sich aus angewandten Entwurfsmethoden ab. Das

Institut gehrt zum Departement Architektur an dereth , zudem ist es Teil der multidisziplinren Forschungs-und Lehrplattform des Netzwerks Stadt und Landschaftns l. Innerhalb des ns l konzentrieren sich die Aktivittendes il a auf die Rolle und die Potentiale der Landschafts-architektur in der aktuellen Debatte ber sowohl ffent-liche als auch private Freirume.

Die Arbeiten am il a lassen sich in drei Lehr- undForschungsschwerpunkte unterteilen:

Zum einen befasst sich das Institut mit der Geschichteund einer kritischen Theorie der Landschaftsarchitekturdes 20 . Jahrhunderts. Die Forschungsschwerpunkte sindsowohl im Entwurf als auch in der Theorie und Ge-schichte der Landschaftsarchitektur und in der Analyse

und Darstellung und medialen Vermittlung von Land-schaftsarchitektur angesiedelt.Zweiter Schwerpunkt ist die Suche nach einer innova-

tiven visuellen Analyse und kognitiven Darstellungvon Landschaft mittels neuer Medien. Hier liegt einSchwerpunkt auf digitaler Videotechnologie.

Landschaftsarchitektonisches Entwerfen und Bauenist der dritte Schwerpunkt der Arbeiten am Institut.Grossmassstbliche Infrastrukturanlagen fr Stdte undihre Peripherien sind genauso Entwurfsaufgaben wieauch das Projektieren kleinmassstblicher Freirume ineinem urbanen Kontext oder privater Grten. Stehenbei ersteren der Umgang mit Topographie und systema-tisches Denken im Vordergrund, liegt bei der Pro-

jektierung kleinerer Freirume das Hauptgewicht aufdem Umgang mit sthetischen Kategorien.

In allen Bereichen richtet sich der Betrachtungs-perimeter des il a sowohl auf den Garten und den Parkals auch auf die Stadtlandschaft und ihre Peripherie.Die Arbeiten am Institut verstehen sich als ein Beitragsowohl zur Geschichte der Landschaftsarchitektur alsauch zu den massgebenden Debatten um die Entwicklungvon Grundlagen fr eine sthetisch und kulturellanspruchsvolle Gestaltung unserer stdtischen Umwelt.

Ziel ist es, die Basis fr ein neues Verstndnisder Entwicklungen und Charakteristika zu legen, die zurBewahrung der Kultur- und Stadtlandschaft, einerseits,und zur Entwicklung zeitgenssischer Konzepte speziellfr die Schweiz, andererseits, beitragen wird.

Zum il a gehren zwei Professuren, ProfessurChristophe Girot und Professur Gnther Vogt, sowie dieGastprofessur von Sbastien Marot. Als weiterfhrendeAusbildung gibt es auch die Mglichkeit, ein einjhrigesMasterstudium in englischer Sprache (mas la) zu belegen.

The Institute of Landscape Architecture (il a) is a newacademic research and teaching platform at the eth .Teaching and research are based on both classical analyticalmethods as well as experimental inductive designmethods. The Institute is part of the Department of

Architecture at the eth . It is also part of a multi-disciplinary research and teaching platform called NetworkCity and Landscape (ns l). Within the ns l, the activitiesof the institute focus on the role of landscape architecturewithin both public and private open spaces.

Work at the il a is divided into three main areas ofteaching and research:

The first area focuses on the history and critical theoryof20th-century landscape architecture. Main researchtopics encompass not only design but also the theory andhistory of landscape architecture.

The second area focuses on innovative visual analysis,rendering, and cognitive representation of landscapearchitecture through media. Particular emphasis is given

to visualization through the use of digital video tech-nology.The third area of teaching and research focuses on

landscape architectural design and construction,especiallywithin the context of large-scale landscape projects forcities and their peripheries. This area is also complementedby assignments on small-scale open space designs andprivate gardens. While the emphasis of the former is ontopology and systemic thinking, smaller scale designsinclude the added dimensions of contemporary aestheticand stylistic issues.

In all three areas, the scale of work at the il a extendsfrom the garden to the entire urban landscape and itsperiphery. Projects developed at the institute contributeto the history of landscape architecture as well as todecisive debates on the development of urban environ-ments of high ecological and cultural quality.

The goal of this institute is to lay the foundations fora new understanding of environmental design. Thiswill contribute, on the one hand, to the improvement ofthe cultural landscape in general and, on the other hand,to the development of contemporary concepts specificto the Swiss context.

The il a has two Chairs, Prof. Christophe Girot andProf. Gnther Vogt, as well as Guest Professor SbastienMarot. In addition, it offers a one-year postgraduateprogram in English with a Masters of Advanced Studiesin Landscape Architecture (mas la).
