Definition Prime Number – a number
that has only two factors, itself and 1.
77 is prime because the only numbers
that will divide into it evenly are 1 and 7.

Examples of Prime Numbers
2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19
Special Note:One is not a prime number.

Definition Composite number – a
number that has more than two factors.
8The factors of 8 are 1, 2, 4, 8

Examples of Composite Numbers
4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15
Special Note:Every whole number from 2 on is
either composite or prime.

Our Lonely 1
Special Note:One is not a prime nor a composite number.
It is not primebecause it doesnot have exactly
two differentfactors.
It is not composite
because it doesnot have morethan 2 factors.

Definition Prime Factorization – A way
to write a composite number as the product of prime factors.
2 x 2 x 3 = 12or
2 x 3 = 122
![Page 14: Ns1.4 A Factors & Primes](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062704/5559d5b5d8b42a98208b4e16/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
How to Do Prime Factorization Using a Factor Tree
48Step 1 – Start with a composite number.
Step 2 – Write down a multiplication problem that equals this number orany pair of factors of this number.
6 x 8 = 48
![Page 15: Ns1.4 A Factors & Primes](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062704/5559d5b5d8b42a98208b4e16/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
How to Do Prime Factorization Using a Factor Tree
Step 3 – Find factors of these factors.
6 x 8 = 48
2 x 3 x 2 x 4 = 48
![Page 16: Ns1.4 A Factors & Primes](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062704/5559d5b5d8b42a98208b4e16/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
How to Do Prime Factorization Using a Factor Tree
Step 4 – Find factors of these numbersuntil all factors are prime numbers.
6 x 8 = 482 x 3 x 2 x 4 = 48
2 x 3 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 48
![Page 17: Ns1.4 A Factors & Primes](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062704/5559d5b5d8b42a98208b4e16/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
How to Do Prime Factorization Using a Factor Tree
Step 5 – Write the numbers from leastto greatest.
6 x 8 = 482 x 3 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 482 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 48
![Page 18: Ns1.4 A Factors & Primes](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062704/5559d5b5d8b42a98208b4e16/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
How to Do Prime Factorization Using a Factor Tree
Step 6 – Count how many numbers arethe same and write exponents for them.
6 x 8 = 482 x 3 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 482 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 48 2 x 3 = 484
![Page 19: Ns1.4 A Factors & Primes](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062704/5559d5b5d8b42a98208b4e16/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Why is it important to know about Prime Factorization? It will be in the CST. It helps you understand multiplication and
division better. A prime number can only be divided by 1 or
itself, so it cannot be factored any further! Every other whole number can be broken
down into prime number factors. It is like the Prime Numbers are the basic
building blocks of all numbers.
