4 EHC: Enriching Home & Community

AEHC 2020 OVERVIEW DURING COVID19 As COVID-19 rages around the world, Arkansas Extension Homemakers have responded

A little over 100 years ago, during the 1918 flu epidemic, EHC clubs ran soup kitchens in their communities They canned vegetables and donated surplus to families during the Great Depression and planted victory gardens to increase food supply during World War II Before the federal school lunch program began, EHC clubs provided lunches for children in their rural communities They answered the call to oversee a statewide campaign for childhood immunizations

AEHC has shown, again and again, their dedication to assisting the residents of Arkansas during hard times This year was no exception

In recent weeks, EHC clubs across the state have responded to the COVID-19 by sewing and donating more than 36,000 masks to medical facilities, nursing homes, first-responders, and other groups needing masks in their respective communities Now several clubs are sewing masks for school aged children who will start back to school this fall

AEHC continues to provide essential needs in their communities and statewide during COVID-19 Numerous news articles, social media posts, guest spots on blogs and countless hours of unselfish community service

Page 5: nriching ome · In 2019, EHC clubs collectively donated 705,275 hours, valued at more than $16 million Individual clubs work on various projects throughout the year, depending on

volunteer hours, have helped AEHC show how essential they are to the state

The statewide Food Insecurity Project, 2019-2021, is another area that had to adapt to the current “normal” conditions Planned activities, with personal contact, to provide one million meals for food insecure Arkansas families were cancelled EHC was partnered with local pantries and state food banks Online giving was promoted and direct links were set up on uaex edu website These links let members and friends from the community donate directly to the food bank of their choice, resulting in over $5,000 in donations

Arkansas Extension Homemakers began in 1912 as Home Demonstration Clubs The clubs, organized by the Cooperative Extension Service, were essential for disseminating critical information for managing family resources and food safety when many rural households were isolated by distance and without modern tools such as electricity, phone service, or access to libraries or other sources of life-saving knowledge

“The clubs have a very long history of service,” AEHC president Karen Bell Fox “Times have changed, but EHC is focused on providing education, leadership development, and service to Arkansas communities We know we have a tremendous impact in our communities, in Arkansas, and in our world, and that work will continue,” Fox added

In 2019, EHC clubs collectively donated 705,275 hours, valued at more than $16 million Individual clubs work on various projects throughout the year, depending on the interests of their members and the needs of their communities Thank you to the members, agents, and more who have helped Arkansas stay healthy during a global pandemic

6 EHC: Enriching Home & Community

As I begin a new chapter in my “Book of AEHC” I would like to reflect on some of the chapters I have already written

In the preface I have several people I will remember for asking me to join EHC when I moved back to my childhood home from Texas Sadly, the very first EH member to ask passed away years ago, but she knew she was responsible for the first chapter of my AEHC book

From an EH member who has held every office in the county and club (some numerous times) to Associate District Director, District Director, Parliamentarian, Vice President, President Elect to your President; I have enjoyed the opportunities to learn, grow and build lasting friendships Ironically the EH Club I am a member of is “Friendship EHC ”

In another chapter I had the privilege of working with Dr Lynn Russell and Betty Oliver Both made a profound impact on my life Traveling with Betty O was a special treat Lots of good memories made

In one of the earliest chapters I had the opportunity to travel to National Volunteer Outreach Network conferences as a member and later as your AEHC representative Then on to Country Women of the World Conferences where I was happy to represent Arkansas and Arkansas Extension Homemakers Council

During every chapter I have had the guidance and acceptance of my husband, George He has heard every idea, speech and thought I have had regarding Extension Homemakers He even shared some tears George also knows that I am a homemaker not a housekeeper!!!! He does not mind my wardrobe being basically red and black

Sad to say the current chapter in my time as President has been greatly impacted due to the COVID-19 pandemic I have missed many opportunities to visit county council meetings and workshops because of the social distancing restrictions The day after our March educational meeting in Ferndale the state was starting to go into isolation to try to stay

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

Page 7: nriching ome · In 2019, EHC clubs collectively donated 705,275 hours, valued at more than $16 million Individual clubs work on various projects throughout the year, depending on

safe and healthy Sadly, many of our members and their families have been impacted personally by COVID-19 My heart goes out to each and every one The final chapter on this world pandemic has not been written, but I know Arkansas Extension Homemakers will be there to guide and assist their communities

As I go into this next chapter called “Immediate Past President” I know the work already done with Arkansas Extension Homemakers will also be recognized as working with “Enriching Home and Community” and will still move forward AEHC will continue to be the greatest volunteer organization in the State of Arkansas

Thank you all for helping me write my “Book of AEHC ”

May God bless you all
