    Maya Karin, Selangor government collaborates on Plastic Bag RecyclingExhibition

    Maya Karin brings the Selangor community together in nature loving effort10 balled-up plastic bag orbs created by Malaysian youth to increase public

    awareness

    20 AUG 2010, SHAH ALAM Maya Karin, celebrity and founder of environmentalinitiative Maya Loves Nature and the Selangor state government has formed a

    multifaceted public-private cooperation with The Malaysian Plastics ManufacturersAssociation, RapidKL, Alam Flora, 1Utama, Subang Parade and Aeon Co. to launch aKlang Valley-wide Plastic Bag Recycling Exhibition from 18 August 2010 to 30September 2010.

    The Plastic Bag Recycling Exhibition is a community outreach effort to urge citizens tokick the plastic bag habit, while advocating the habit of reducing, reusing andrecycling plastic bags. The exhibition consists of ten giant, rolled-up plastic bag orbs,made up of 680 kg of recyclable plastic bags collected by approximately 20,000primary school students from 10 primary schools in Klang Valley.

    These orbs can be spotted at various locations in Selangor including LRT stations andselected hypermarkets.

    Commenting on Mayas drive to help protect nature, Selangors Bukit Gasing stateassemblyman YB Edward Lee said, "We are confident that over time, the habit ofreducing plastic bags will help consumers in learning to protect the environment.Maya Karin is truly loved by her fans, and we hope that with her support andleadership, the plastic-less Saturdays will encourage more citizens in Selangor toadopt an greener lifestyle effortlessly.

    Statistics show that over 8 billion plastic bags have been used in Malaysia. As themost populated and urban state in the country, Selangor is a major contributor to thatstatistic. The Selangor governments No Plastic Bag Day campaign is dedicated inadvocating against the indiscriminate use of plastics. Since January, the Selangorgovernment has signed with 74 partners, representing more than 600 hypermarkets,malls, retail chains and bookstores in the state. It is estimated that the campaign hassaved roughly 2 million plastic bags in its first 2 months of the campaign.

    Maya Loves Nature (MLN) is an environmental awareness campaign that Maya Karinand her management team organise annually. Both Maya Loves Nature and No PlasticBag Day campaigns not only share the same objectives, but also acknowledge the

    importance of conserving the environment through education.

    It had always been my dream to do something for the environment especially in acreative way like this, said Maya. Through the Maya Loves Nature and Plastic Bag

    "I hope that children would help pass the message on to their parents and relatives,

    and to not just stop at plastic bags. The list of things one can do to save theenvironment is endless. Let us prove that we can live the modern life and still care forthe environment at the same time, she continued.

    The ten orbs were created by young Malaysian students from collections of plasticbags from their homes between 1 June and 31 July 2010. These plastic bags were thenaccumulated in respective schools. With the help of some volunteers together with thestudents tied and rolled those plastic bags into giant orbs.

    This effort was celebrated at a ceremony at Stadium Putra Bukit Jalil with eco-conscious students from SK Bandar Baru Bangi Seksyen 7, SK Bandar Baru Bangi

    Seksyen 7, SK Seri Tasik, SK Puchong Perdana, SK Bangsar, SK Bandar Tun HusseinOnn 2, SK Bandar Tasik Selatan, SK Seksyen 20, SK Bukit Jelutong, SK Puncak Alam 2and SK Setiawangsa.
