1. Warm-up activities

We warm up our muscles for physical exercise...

... So why don’t we warm up our brains for mental exercise?

A quick, simple task, unrelated to the lessone.g. Whiteboard jigsaw, building dice towers, “points-down” game, ‘Articulate’

1. Warm-up activities

Not the same as a starter

Starters frequently: relate to the lessonrequire pupils to think about contentlead into the next activity

A “warm-up” might not have these elements (but it could if you are creative/clever/insidious)

Whiteboard Jigsaw

Can also be used as a lesson activity, to:– Mix up groups for a subsequent task– Stimulate discussion– Provoke thought– Burn off excess energy– ... And anything else you can think of

The limit is your imagination/creativity

3. A Final thought on Marking

Marking can be dull and filled with drudgery.A change of mindset may help you manage the

work.

“Think of marking a book as spending two minutes of time with that individual, as if you

were speaking to them in a lesson.”
