Fr. William Wasson, founder of Nuestros Pequeños

Hermanos,™ is ordained in

Cuernavaca, Mexico and assigned to a chapel in the

market.

Fr. Wasson is given custody of the first boy after he was caught stealing from the church poor box because “he was hungry.”

1959

Girls joined theNPH family.

After nine years, 396 pequeños, or little ones, made up the

NPH family.

NPH built its own high school in

Cuernavaca.

Our Little Brothers and Sisters, Inc. is established in Virginia to raise funds for NPH by Frank and Polly Krafft.

Casa San Salvador in Miacatlán, Mexico, is acquired; work begins to refurbish the old sugar plantation.

1964

The first of NPH USA (then Friends of Our Little Brothers) offices incorporated.

Casa Buen Señor is built for the high school students in Cuernavaca.

1971

Fundraising office in Canada opened.

1972

The final move took place to San Salvador in Miacatlán. Reconstruction of dormitories, kitchen, general rooms, etc. was completed. Also the first group of students arrived in July at their new home in Monterrey to study at the university level.

Fr. Wasson was awarded the Good Samaritan Award.

Fr. Wasson received Honorary Franciscan robe.

Fr. Wasson was awarded the Luis Elizondo Humanitarian Award, a Mexican National

Prize given for contribution to the children of Mexico.

Fr. Wasson was the only U.S. citizen to receive this award.

1977

Fr. Wasson accepted the Franciscan International Award.

1981

Fr. Wasson opened a home in Honduras.

Joan Provencio was appointed National Director of NPH Mexico.19

Fr. Wasson brought NPH youths from Mexico to Yarnell, Arizona, to take advantage of scholarships offered in Northern Arizona. The expansion program officially became known as the English Language Learning Center.

Fundraising offices in Austria and Germany opened.

Fr. Wasson wrote “Gospel in the Dust.”

Fr. Wasson and Fr. Rick Frechette traveled to Haiti where there is an overwhelming need for a hospice and orphanage; Nos Petits Frères et Soeurs Haiti opened.

1987

Fundraising office openedin Switzerland.

Mexico honored Fr. Wasson with Aztec Eagle Award.

1985

Fundraising office in Netherlands opened.

1991

Fr. Phil Cleary is named National Director for NPH Mexico.19

Fr. Wasson and life-long friend, Dr. Michael Maccoby met.

Fundraising office in Belgium opened.

Fundraising office in France opened.

Fr. Wasson established an NPH home on Ometepe Island in Nicaragua.

Guatemala became the third Central American country that joined the family.

1996

Fr. Wasson met Mother Teresa.

The National Caring Award was awarded to Fr. Wasson.

Fundraising office in Ireland opened.

1997

NPH Mexico extended its reach to families in the Milpillas garbage dump. Children are bused each day & attend school at NPH, are able to shower, wear a clean uniform, have breakfast, lunch, medical & dental care.

Nueva Esperanza – Emergency aid and housing program began for

victims of Hurricane Mitch in Honduras.

1998

The children of war torn El Salvador were welcomed into the NPH family. Olegario Campos is National Director.

Fundraising office in Italy opened.

Fundraising office in Spain opened

2002

Fr. Wasson celebrated his Golden Jubilee, the 50th anniversary of his

priesthood. On December 21st, Fr. Wasson

celebrated his 80th birthday. 20

NPH Dominican Republic opened in San Pedro de Macoris with seven children.

Fr. Wasson opened a home in Peru. NPH enters its 50th year of serving children.

NPH International Medical Services Department was initiated.

Bolivia is the latest home to join the NPH family.

Fr. Wasson passes away on August 16th. He is buried alongside his parents in Yarnell, Arizona, U.S. Memorials are held in all the NPH homes and all around the world.

2006

City of the Children of Matamoros, the new home in northern Mexico,

opened its doors.

NPH Peru family moved to their new home in San Vicente de Cañete.

Fundraising office in New Zealand opened.

NPH International Leadership Institute with a charter class of

five pequeño/as began in Seattle, Washington, U.S.

The local judge continued to send Fr. Wasson boys who were incarcerated for petty crimes.

Fr. Wasson shared his love of learning with the pequeños, with the goal of creating future teachers.

Fr. Wasson and the pequeños are grateful to have the help of the Sisters.

A portion of the NPH Family moved to Hacienda Alcolman.

Fr. Wasson received the World of Children Award.

Fr. Wasson started first medical center in Petionville, Haiti.

NPH International Family Services Department was initiated.

NPHI Family Services Fifth Annual Youth Development Conference was hosted in NPH Nicaragua.

First Annual NPH International Soccer Tournament hosted at NPH El Salvador.20

Devastating twin disasters of Haiti earthquake and cholera, created new and expanded programs in childcare, healthcare and emergency aid.

Construction completed on Fr. Wasson Angels of Light baby house and preschool – elementary school.

Completed construction of special needs homes (Dominican Republic and Honduras) and construction of Kay Gabriel adult and pediatric rehabilitation therapies, at NPH Haiti.
