“Alert or Asleep?”(Part 11 of a series, “Living in Light of Jesus’ Return!”)

I Thessalonians 5:1-11

Last Lord’s Day morning, we took a look at I Thessalonians 4:13-18, a passage about the Lord’s return. The return ofJesus - perhaps very soon! - should be a comfort, encouragement and motivator to us! One of the things we believers inJesus Christ should be dong as Jesus’ return approaches is tobe “alert and sober” (vs. 6)! We need to be aware of the times inwhich we live as well as the temptations of Satan. Notice, as theApostle Paul encourages the believers to live holy lives in themidst of pagan surroundings, the differences between believersand unbelievers:

1. Knowledge vs. Ignorance (vss. 1, 2)

2. Expectancy vs. Surprise (vss. 3-5)

3. Alert vs. Unaware (Asleep) (vss. 6-8)

4. Salvation vs. Wrath (vss. 9-11)

n the 21st century, whether the job is evangelism or social outreach, women missionaries areessential to cross-cultural

work. Yet when the “modernmissionary movement”

i began, many peopleconsidered pioneer missionwork too dangerous forwomen. Throughout thehistory of Christianity, thetypical missionary hadbeen a celibate male. But

By bravely going whereno American wife hadgone before, AnnHasseltine Judsoninspired generationsof women to becomemissionaries.

a breakthrough came inthe early 1 800s. When theAmerican Board commissioned the first Americanforeign missionaries, theyoung volunteers refusedto go unless they wereallowed to marry. As aresult, three young wivesset out for the mission Fieldwith their husbands. Ofthe three, Ann Judson’scareer was the mostextraordinary. She provedfor all time that womenbelonged in the missionfield as much as men.

Married to theministryAdoniram Judson met AnnHasseltine at her father’shouse in Bradford,Massachusetts. Soon after,he proposed marriage toher by letter. Ann was

unable to answer immediately. She barely knew himand realized she would bemarrying not only a man,but a vocation.

She wrote in her diaryon September 10, 1810:‘n opportunity has beenpresented to me, ofspending my days amongthe heathen, attempting topersuade them to receivethe Gospel. Were Iconvinced of its being a

call from God, and that it

would be more pleasing tohim, for me to spend mylife in this way than in anyother, I think I should bewilling to relinquish everyearthly object, and, in fullview of dangers andhardships, give myself upto the great work.”

For two months shewrestled over feelings ofreligious duty, her attachment to her family, and herfear of suffering alone in aforeign land. She ultimatelyconcluded that marriage toJudson represented God’swill for her life. She wrote

in her diary,“0, if [God]will condescend to makeme useful inpromoting hiskingdom, Icare not whereI perform hiswork, norhow hardit be.”

In an agewhen women’semploymentopportunitieswere limited, marriage to aminister wasthe surest path toChristian service. Theforeign mission movementwas on the cutting edge ofthis development inwomen’s ministry. Bymarrying a missionary,Ann Hasseltine legitimatedthe role of the missionarywife as a “calling.”

DI YOU NO’1?The most famousbiography of AnnJudson appeared ina new edition almostevery year from 830to 1856. To the present, there have been at least16 biographies of AnnJudson published.

I wives, therefore, went farbeyond acting as traditionalhelpmeets for theirhusbands.

On March 14, 1812,Ann Judson, while on aship bound for India, wrote, “I desire no higherenjoyment in this life, thanto be instrumental ofleading some poor,

keep this in view, as oneprincipal object of my life.”

Ann’s own goals formission were shaped by herprevious employment as aschoolteacher. In a letter toher sisters in 1812, shearticulated part of herstrategy for reachingwomen: “Good femaleschools are extremelyneeded in this country. Ihope no Missionary willever come out here withouta wife, as she, in her sphere, can be equally useful withher husband.”

The many roles ofAnn JudsonOnce in Burma, Adoniramspent all day in languagestudy as he worked totranslate the Bible intoBurmese. Ann was left tomanage the family andhousehold matters, and

could not begin languagestudy until 10:00 eachmorning. She enduredconstant interruptions, especially after the birthof their first child in 1815.But by handling all thehousehold affairs, AnnJudson used Burmese untilher spoken language wasbetter than her husband’s.

As soon as possible,Ann gathered a group ofwomen into a SabbathSociety. She read the Bibleto them and tried to tellthem about God. WhileAdoniram discussedreligion with the men, Ann

would meet with thewomen to pray and talkabout the gospel.

A P[CBLIAR PROP0S4Adoniram Judson wrote to John Hasseltinein 1810, asking for permission to marry hisdaughter, Ann:

‘1 have now to ask, whether you canconsent to part with your daughter early nextspring, to see her no more in this world;whether you can consent to her departure, and her subjection to the hardships andsufferings of a missionary life; whether youcan consent to her exposure to the dangersof the ocean; to the fatal influence of thesouthern climate of India; to every kind ofwant and distress; to degradation, insult, persecution, and perhaps a violent death.

Can you consent to all this, for the sake of himwho left his heavenly home, and died for her and

for you; for the sake of perishing, immortal souls; for

the sake of Zion, and the glory of God? Can you consent

to all this, in hope of soon meeting your daughter in the

world of glory, with the crown of righteousness,

brightened with the acclamations of praise which shall

redound to her Saviour from heathens saved, through her

means, from eternal woe and despair?”

IO YOU NO’N?By the l830s, theAmerican Board ofCommissioners forForeign Missionsprohibited unmarriedpersons from enteringthe mission field. TheBoard had come tobelieve that marriedmissionaries could copebetter with hardshipsand resist sexualtemptations.

DID YOU NO’N?The Judsons baptizedtheir first convert sixyears afterang

Ann assisted Adoniramin his literary work bytranslating several tracts, aswell as the books of Danieland Jonah, into Burmese. She also wrote a catechismin Burmese. In 1817, shebegan to study the Siamese(Thai) language. Shebecame the fIrst Protestantto translate any of theScriptures into Siamesewith her translation ofthe Gospel of Matthewin 1819.

In 1822, her healthbroken, Ann returned tothe United States for a rest. While in America, shewrote A Particular Relation

ofthe American BaptistMission to the BurmanEmpire. This was one ofthe first published accountsof an American foreignmission written by amissionary. Ann planned touse the proceeds to redeemfemale children who weresold as slaves. She wantedto educate them, and so toconvince the Burmese thatfemale education was

useful. After the Judsonsmoved to the city of Avain February 1824, Annbegan a school for threesmall girls.

It was not herevangelistic and literaryaccomplishments, however, that made Ann Judson’sname a household word inthe United States. Rather, it

was the story of her effortsto feed and care for herhusband when he wasimprisoned during a warbeRveen the British andthe Burmese in May of1824. After her untimelydeath, the life of AnnJudson became a popularbiography. Her courageousand activist career providedan inspirational model formissionary women in the19th century and continuesto do so today.

IRAY[R JOURNALif I have been deceived in thinking it my duty to go tothe heathen, I humbly pray, that I may be undeceived, and prevented from going. But whether I spend my daysin India or America, I desire to spend them in the serviceof God, and be prepared to spend an eternity in hispresence. 0 Jesus, make me live to thee, and I desireno more.—Ann .Judson wrote this prayer in her journal while considering
