Letter to Our Readers As the holiday season approaches and we gather with family and friends to enjoy meals, libations and companionship, take a moment to think of the thousands in our region who are deprived of these festivities. Our editor has taken this timely opportunity to speak to you about the altruistic food-based organizations in our communities that help these folks, but, at the same time need your help. Take a few moments to learn about these charitable groups, and then let your hearts respond accordingly. Enjoy Buffalo wings? How about old cars, trucks and motorcycles? Well, if you want to “start your engines” and, at the same time fill up on some delicious food, stop by Quaker Steak & Lube. This unique restaurant, which opened in Brick two years ago, will dazzle you with its unusual décor and its fabulous selection of “heated” sauces to accompany your wings. Read more in this issue’s Restaurant Profile feature. Most of us enjoy cover music, but occasionally like to listen to some inspiring original sounds. Here’s a local band that can “kick it” with both. Creeptones is a group that started in a garage in Toms River five years ago. The band has quickly grown in popularity, releasing its first album in 2012 and finishing ninth out of 12,000 in a recent “Battle of the Bands” held at the Hard Rock Café. Learn more about Creeptones in this issue’s Band Profile. Next, meet a young woman who “loves kids and always has”. Amanda Cimo is a bartender at Surf Taco in Jackson working five shifts a week. In addition, she is going to school studying for a career in nursing. Amanda’s goal is to eventually work in the field of pediatric nursing. Her caring for “little ones” can be seen in the smiles she emits as she serves her customers as bartender. Our contributing writer Steve O introduces us to a standup comic who is about to become an overnight success after only 30 years in the business. Meet Vic Dibitetto, comedian and movie star (Mall Cop 2) who has also achieved over 23 million views on his social media videos. Take a moment to read Steve’s interview with this very interesting personality. Okay, hopefully this issue will provide you with timely information allowing you to get out and enjoy yourselves, while, at the same time, provided some food for thought.

It’s all about the Buffalo wings and the fabulous selection of “heated” sauces at Quaker Steak & Lube. Well… that, and the cars, trucks, motor cycles, and some of the most unique restaurant décor you’re likely to encounter in our region. Many travel just to indulge in the tempting Buffalo wings served up here that have won numerous awards, including “Fan Favorite” at the National Buffalo Wing Festival in Buffalo, New York. But, part of the charm of this destination eatery includes keeping the spirit alive of those who envisioned this establishment whose his-tory goes back to Sharon, Pennsylvania in 1974 where Quaker Steak & Lube was founded. While others were dealing with long lines during the gas crisis in the 1970s, George “Jig” Warren III and Gary “Moe” Meszaros, were on a mission to find a home to preserve the culture of those old gas stations and high-powered muscle cars. And as they achieved their mission, Quaker Steak & Lube gave old muscle cars a permanent home, and great food to go along with them. The business made its home in New Jersey two years ago with its Brick location, which just celebrated its second anniversary, according to Nelson Gonzalez, marketing manager for the franchise. A second loca-tion opened in Edison in April, and a third location found a home in Pohatcong in August. And keeping to its origins, rescuing classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles remains an integral part of the culture of this business where those vehicles find a wel-coming home to hang their metal, whether it be on an inside wall or ceiling or an outdoor roof. The Brick eatery offers the perfect venue for evening or weekend game viewing on any one of 35 TVs scat-

tered throughout the restaurant and bar. There is even one on the floor in the lobby.Patrons can dine on menu selections that include, juicy, thick Angus burgers, tender Angus steaks, sandwiches, healthy salads and nachos and tacos and, of course, those amazing wings.

Quaker Steak & Lube takes its wing-eating seriously. Buffalo wings are served as your choice of bone-in, grilled boneless and breaded boneless with a selection of 25 sauces. The menu offers a “Wing-o-Meter” indi-cating the “heat” of each sauce. Beginning with Mild, such as “Asian,” or “Dusted Chipotle BBQ,” then moves to Medium such as, “Thai ‘R’ Cracker” or “Lube’s Sri-racha,” then to Hot with “Supercharged,” or “Buckeye BBQ.” Finally, move up to Insane, with “Atomic” and “Triple Atomic,” which is described as, “Guts, Glory,

Pain.” You’ll need to sign a waiver if you take the chal-lenge and eat six Triple Atomics. Do it and earn a place on the “Wall of Flame.” Burgers are plentiful and include the Lubeburger®, topped with sautéed mushrooms, crispy bacon and

to close. “Trivia Nights,” “All-U-Can-Eat Nights,” and Game Day Football specials are also on tap, along with $5 appetizers and drink specials. This family-oriented eatery also offers special kids menus (every kids meal comes with a kid car), as well as a Kids Club. Video games in the lobby will also wel-come the youngsters. Gonzalez sums up the philosophy at Quaker Steak & Lube, “Our goal is to make sure our guests are taken care of any way we can with a great atmosphere, excel-lent food and top notch service.”

Providing a highly unique sound that started in a garage in Toms River, Creeptones can kick it with covers and great original music alike.

The band started five years ago, and consists of Carmine Stoppiello on rhythm guitar, Will Hernandez on bass, Johnny Vines on lead guitar and Tommy Cirillo on drums. Stoppiello and Hernandez met in high school and when they couldn’t find a drummer they brought in Cirillo, Stoppiello’s brother. They then brought in Vines, who used to play drums with Stoppiello before Creeptones started, to round out the band.

One of the most important members of the group doesn’t even play with them, though he is responsible for their name and image. Nico Lucido, who used to play bass with Stoppiello when the band was in its infancy, had said the music had a certain creep to it and the name was born. Though he lives in Florida, he continues to provide the unique visuals for stickers, posters and its website that complements the music perfectly.

The past few years have seen the band hit some pretty big milestones. In 2012 it released its first album, “The Creep Is Born,”

which is currently available on iTunes and Amazon; and last year Creeptones entered a global battle of the bands hosted by The Hard Rock Café in which it finished ninth out of 12,000. This past summer the band played the Soulsational Music Festival in Bayville, its first time performing on a stage that big with major sound gear and a professional sound engineer.

While the guys have primarily focused on originals for the five years they have been together, Creeptones has started to add covers to its repertoire, allowing the band to play more gigs and reach an even bigger audience

and supplement more income to put towards its original projects. Thanks to that, C r e e p t o n e s are working on putting out another album some time in 2015.

Even though the members are young, Cirillo graduated high school last year and Vines is currently in a Masters program

at Temple University, it’s The Beatles who have had one of the biggest influences on the band. “When we play live it was about the performance. There’s not a lot of gimmicks,” says Stoppiello. “We’re not the type of band that’s jumping around and really in your face, we

let the music speak for itself.” For more modern bands they look up to R adiohead, e s p e c i a l l y they way they keep reinventing themselves and the genre and their distribution m o d e l s i n c l u d i n g their album In Rainbows which was a play-what-you-want album. Throw in a pinch of Cage The Elephant and you have a recipe for a really unique brew. It’s not just their sound either as the guys are working on new and creative ways of distributing their music that takes advantage of apps and smartphones.

Creeptones has four shows booked at The Sawmill in Seaside Heights and another at Hat City

Kitchen in Orange in November and while it remains just a local band right now, the musicians are currently saving up to purchase a touring vehicle that will allow them easier access to New York City and Philadelphia. Until then, they’ll keep honing their sound and working on setting themselves apart from everyone else. “We definitely try to have a good time no matter what the situation is, whether there is one person there or 1,000,” declares Stoppiello. “We are doing our best to provide something exciting every time we go out

and play. And we have plans to do things differently. And when people do hear about us and do see us they’ll walk away knowing they saw something different and that they’ll want to come back.”

Amanda Cimoby CLARE MARIE CELANO

Bartender Amanda Cimo is building a career in the nursing field but says she will keep her bartending skills sharp, even after she begins her nursing career. Cimo has tended bar at Surf Taco in Jackson for a little over four years, beginning as server, then moving to waitress and now bartender. Although she enjoys both day and night shifts she prefers the nights at Surf Taco where the excitement is high, the music is going and the pace is faster than day time work. The Toms River resident is currently working on a bachelor’s of nursing at Kean University and is excited about becoming a nurse. Her studies include courses such as nursing theory, issues and trends in nursing and medical terminology. Her

goal is to eventually work in the field of pediatric nursing. “I love kids,” Cimo says. “I always have.” Cimo started out on a path in teaching, earned her associates degree in liberal arts at Ocean County Community College, and then changed her career path to nursing. “I have always had a passion for nursing,” she admits. In addition to her bartending and studies, Cimo volunteers at Children’s Specialized Hospital in Toms River where she helps nurses care for the sick children and plays therapeutic types of games and interacts with them. Although working with ill youngsters can sometime be very tough, Cimo says it is very satisfying and rewarding to her. “I love making the children smile and helping them to feel better,” she relates. Caring for the little ones is also a wonderful stepping stone to her career as a pediatric nurse. “It is a good feeling to be able to help a sick child and give back something to him or her. They have a lot going on and a lot to deal with,” she says. Working in the medical profession is going to work out with Cimo who says her fiancé Greg is currently a student at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, Stratford, studying to work in the field of specialized surgery.

“We support each other completely with our studies and our work,” she says. The couple is looking forward to working in the same profession. And Cimo will always be able to deliver those smiles as a bartender.

INGREDIENTS:• 1 1/2 ounces brandy• 1 ounce dark crème de cacao• 1 ounce half-and-half• 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg

PREPARATION:Fill a shaker halfway with ice cubes. Pour in the brandy, crème de cacao, and the half-and-half. Shake well and strain into a cocktail glass. Sprinkle the grated nutmeg over the top. Tip: grind a fresh, whole nutmeg over the top of the drink and it’ll have more flavor than ground nutmeg from a jar.

Pumpkin Pie Martini

INGREDIENTS:• 2 ounces vanilla vodka• 2 ounces white crème de cacao• 1/4 cup heavy cream• 1.5 tablespoons of pumpkin puree (pie mix)• 1 dash of ground nutmeg (for garnish)• Powdered graham cracker (for the rim)

PREPARATION:Rim two martini glasses with crushed graham cracker. Fill a shaker with ice and add the vodka, crème de cacao, cream and pumpkin puree. Shake well until it’s chilled. Strain into the martini glasses. Sprinkle the ground nutmeg on top for garnish.

INGREDIENTS:• 1/2 ounce cognac• 3/4 ounce vanilla liqueur• 3/4 ounce caramel vodka• 1/2 ounce half-n-half• Sugar (for the rim of the glass) PREPARATION:Rim a cocktail glass with sugar. Shake the ingredients together with ice. Strain them into the glass.

Ocean CountiesAccording to Carlos M. Rodriguez, Executive Director, FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties (FBMOC), the FoodBank provides emergency food and other

services to approximately 131,600 people – that’s one out of 10 residents of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Clients who visit its network of more than 300 feeding programs report that their in-come is too low to meet their most basic needs of food, rent, utilities and healthcare. Approximately 85% of the households served by FBMOC report that they have income below $30,000 annually.

“While we were facing the challenge of meeting an 84% increase in need in the aftermath of the recession, we were hit with Hurricane Sandy,” Rodriguez reports. “Agencies in areas that were devastated by Sandy saw an overwhelming in-crease in need. And now, two years later, there’s little indication that need in many of those com-munities is subsiding. Immediately following Sandy, our network was further strained by the cuts in SNAP (food stamps). The cuts in the food program resulted in longer lines at many of our emergency food pantries.”

Food distribution is the primary function of the FoodBank. Last year, it distributed more than 10 million meals through its network. In addition to food distribution, the organization works on long-term solutions to the chronic problem of hunger in our communities. Some of the steps we’ve taken to help reduce the need for emergency food include SNAP outreach, free income tax prepara-tion and culinary job training.

The holiday season is when many donors consid-er making a gift to the FoodBank. “Monetary do-nations are our biggest need – during the holidays and throughout the year,” Rodriguez emphasizes.

“With our purchasing power, we can provide three meals for every $1 donated, so a monetary gift is the most efficient way to help the hungry. We also encourage people to donate non-per-ishable food or hold a food drive. Holiday food drop-off sites are located throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Donations peak during the holidays, but hunger knows no season. We rely on the generosity of our supporters throughout the year,” he adds.

FBMOC also welcomes volunteers and there are “countless opportunities.” Last year, says Rodri-guez, volunteers contributed more than 15,000 hours of work. They are critical to the work we do.

I would like to stress the importance of staying informed about issues that affect our most vul-nerable neighbors. JBJ Soul Kitchen

JBJ Soul Kitchen, a program of the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, opened in October 2011 in Red Bank, to address issues of food insecurity. It lives up to its motto, “Hope is Delicious;” the community kitchen serves nutritious, culinary dishes in a res-taurant atmosphere where diners contribute either volunteer hours or a minimum donation for their meals. Soul Kitchen has served more than 27,500 meals with an average of over 40% of meals going to families, seniors and children in need.

Those who volunteer are guided by Soul Kitchen staff through their tasks. Volunteering at Soul Kitchen can lead to qualifying for job training. Chefs create healthy, delicious meals with the freshest ingredients, some grown in its own or-ganic garden.

Soul Kitchen serves a three-course meal based on American Regional cuisine, starting with your choice of salad or soup, followed by a choice of a fish dish, a meat dish or a vegetarian selection. The meal is finished with a fresh-baked dessert.

Volunteers may help prepare food, set tables, serve as wait staff, wash and dry dishes, and clean and stock items. The volunteer opportunities fall into two categories: those who need to volunteer in order to provide a meal for themselves and/or their families; and those who volunteer to help staff the kitchen to assist in providing the meals to those in need. Eatontown Food Co-opEatontown Patch, writer Amy Byrnes, reporter for Eatontown Patch, writes on March 22. 2011, that “ According to U.S. Census data (2005-2009 American Community Survey), 7 percent of fam-ilies in Eatontown are living below the poverty line.”

Byrnes’ heartfelt profile of Eatontown Food Co-op describes that this food pantry is mostly funded through donations that come from a wide variety of sources -- Lion’s Club, local houses of worship and school and community food drives. In addi-tion, the Co-op places many jars on counters of local businesses throughout the town; up through the time of Byrnes’ article, approximately $4,400 had been collected in this manner since 2008.

Joel Stark has been the co-op director and states to Byrnes that “There’s enough people in Eaton-town with needs -- and they are hungry.”

Stark and volunteers man the pantry every other Wednesday between noon and 3:00 pm for resi-dents who meet the criteria for free food, similar

to Freehold Area Open Door. In addition, the Ea-tontown Food Co-op works with the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, where a ma-jority of its food is purchased.

Community Table / Feeding Friendz Our own celebrity chef, Marilyn Schlossbach, owner of several popular eateries on the Jersey Shore, is more than a chef, she is considered an angel. Creatively innovating programs that put people to work and that raise funds to assist people in need in Asbury Park and surrounding areas, she has partnered with Pat Sherman of Trinity Church to host an annual Thanksgiving Community Din-ner, free and open to the public.

Schlossbach and approximately 100 volunteers both cook and serve for more than 600 people for a delicious meal from 11:00 am through 3:00 pm. And Thanksgiving is not the only time Food for Thought by the Sea caters to the area’s hungry -- she will repeat the process at Christmas for about 1,000 people. Her first Thanksgiving dinner was held at one of her former establishments, Market in the Middle and was inspired by her friend Pat Sherman, who founded Feeding Friendz; the two envisioned a community celebratory feast for those who would otherwise po- t en t i a l ly go hungry when the rest of A m e r -ica is c o -zily en-sconced in their homes, en-joying their Thanksgiv-ing courses.

FoodStockSome local families give back as well. Michelle and Bob Swisher of Freehold founded Food-Stock -- “Peace, Love, Food” -- now in its fifth year. The couple reported that during the past four years, they have raised more than 76,000 pounds of food. The Swishers recently held the FoodStock party on October 18th, where they an-nounced that they have finally received recogni-tion as a 501c3 charity.

O N B R O A D W A Y Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick made magic and a megahit together in “The Producers” and scored a second Broadway jackpot, despite tepid notices, in “The Odd Couple.” Now the Great White Way’s dynamic duo is back on stage in Terrence McNally’s 1985 comedy “It’s Only a Play.” The reunion is wildly hit and miss — Lane is the hit, while Broderick is the, well, you know. Clown prince Lane nimbly nails the role of James Wicker, a TV star at the opening-night party of a Broadway play that he bailed on — even though the lead role was written for him by his best friend. Wicker is custom-tailored for what Lane does best. Catty one-liners? Check. Sly slow burns? Check. High-spirited

howls? Check. Lane makes the familiar fresh and delivers gusts of laughing gas. Meanwhile, Broderick drains the air and momentum as playwright Peter Austin, Wicker’s BFF, who’s awaiting reviews of his show, “The Golden Egg.” When he enters for the first time, deep into the first act, it’s like someone dropped an anchor. Partly it’s his wishy-washy performance, partly it’s the script. Austin’s role is to underscore the importance of theater and the meaning of true-blue friendship. But he doesn’t get many funny lines. Despite astute and acclaimed work in plays like “Master Class” and musicals including “Ragtime,” McNally’s writing here is uneven. Working with director Jack O’Brien, the author has brushed up his 30-year-old play with contemporary

references but still hasn’t come up with a way to keep things afloat after reviews for the play-within-the-play come out. The author’s main fuels are name-dropping, in-jokes and vulgarities. The Kardashians inspire an amusing bit about stunt casting. Wee Daniel Radcliffe sparks a cute sight gag. Scott Pask’s posh bedroom set is sprayed with F-bombs and “see you next Tuesdays.” What’s lacking are surprises. Characters get one dimension apiece, including witless theater producer Julia Budder (Megan Mullally, recycling her “Will & Grace” voice); desperate diva Virginia Noyes (Stockard Channing, saucy under cruel makeup); quirky wunderkind director Frank Finger (a vigorous Rupert Grint); and creepy

critic Ira Drew (F. Murray Abraham). Completing the cast is Micah Stock, a Broadway rookie who more than holds his own as a simpleton coat check with the gift of ingratiation. One reason he makes such an impression is that he shows up on Broadway without any baggage — so the audience gets the joy of discovering a new talent making his major stage debut. Besides good old dependable Nathan Lane, this diversion has good timing going for it. People are desperate for laughs and comedies on Broadway are bloody rare. If only McNally’s “Play” was more well-done.

subtle humor. Vic Dibitetto may not be a household name, yet, but he will be in the near future. With sold-out dates across the country and a soon-to-be-released movie, “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2,” he’s about to become an overnight sensation after 30 years in the business. A special thanks to Suzy Yengo with Catch A Rising Star and Russell Best for helping arrange this interview.

Venues-NJ: You’ve been working at this game for a while now, has it really taken off because of Facebook or was it growing before that?Vic Dibitetto: Yes, I’m doing this 30 years, but nobody was giving me a break. That’s when I decided to use social media. It’s definitely been one reason for my huge following. The “bread and milk” video has 12 million views. The Justin Bieber video has two million views. I’m up to 23 million total views with all my videos combined...and my following is growing each day.

V-NJ: People don’t just become funny overnight so I gotta assume you were the funny guy in high school and then in your first few jobs. When did you decide to make

this a full time career? VD: Yes, I was the class clown. My friend told me about a comedy club in Brooklyn called Pips that had an amateur night. I was booed off the stage but the needle was hooked.

V-NJ: Speaking of jobs, do you have a real job or is this it now? I saw a bunch of upcoming gigs on your calendar so I’m guessing this is it.VD: I always had two jobs for 30 years. I never did comedy full time. I had to support a family...until recently. I just quit driving a school bus. This will be the first time I’m dedicating all my time to comedy...look out comedy world, The Italian Hurricane will leave nothing standing.

V-NJ: What’s it like for the family when you travel and getting recognized all the time? Are they getting used to it or is it starting to get old?VD I love getting recognized. I waited 30 years for this. My wife gets a little nervous though. We had strangers who were fans come to my house. It’s a double-edged sword. Most people are nice but you have your crazies too.

V-NJ: I know the life of a stand-up comic is a life on the road. How many nights a year do you spend in your own bed and is that still in Staten Island?VD: I did the road a lot in the 90s. Then I had to focus on getting a job to pay bills. I’m a homebody. The road is depressing but soon I will have to hit the road again but it’ll be different this time. I have a following and I’m selling out clubs and I have a sitcom I’m filming and starring in for Hulu. Once the movie “Mall Cop 2” that I did with Kevin James comes out in April I will be all over the country! And home now is New Jersey. That’s all I can tell you. I don’t want YOU coming to my house next. LOL!

V-NJ: I don’t wanna ruin your home life but where do you go for a beer or a cup of coffee? If you choose not to answer this one I’ll certainly understand.VD: I have no time for a beer. I have no social life. I’m booked solid. I have a great manager, Russell Best, who keeps me busy. Russell is also a big part of my success. He’s got a lot of connections and he doesn’t ask me to sleep with him. My fun time is being at my gigs, and I can’t drink too much because I get migraines. I’d rather take hit on a joint. Yes , you can print this, my wife knows. I’m 53. My party days are over. I’m humble. I’m not gonna throw it all away. Rodney Dangerfield didn’t make it until his mid-50s. Guys who get too much too soon sometimes wind up six feet under. I never take for granted what’s happening to me. As far as coffee? I have a Keurig machine. I drink 10 cups a day. The simple things in life is what makes me happy. Family, friends, and health. Sorry if this interview bored you, but what can I say? When I’m on stage or in front of a camera, or sitting home having coffee, I’m just a regular guy trying to enjoy life!

Comic Relief

Sadly, Selena Coppack’s aBostonian and doesn’t understand that the only real teams to root for are in NY and NJ. I jest of course (kinda, sorta). Coppack has been performing stand up for eight years and her new book, The New Rules For Blondes, launches in April.

Were you “the funny one” growing up?

I come from a very funny home and my older sister Laurel is a comedian, too. So I wasn’t really ‘the funny one’ at home so much as Laurel and I spent a lot of time writing musicals in our bedrooms, choreographing strange dance numbers, and watching “Saturday Night Live” since age 7. I think that my parents and oldest sister Emily are super hilarious, too. But yes, I’ve always been a bit of a ham and really interested in comedy and performing.

Along those lines, did you do all the school productions? Where’d you grow up? Or rather, if you’re anything like me, where were you raised?

I grew up outside of Boston and I did all of the school plays growing up -- I absolutely loved performing and the excitement of rehearsing and being in shows. I did some professional theater in Boston (at the Boston Baked Theater--now gone) and in high school I became interested in singing, too. I went to college in upstate NY where I majored in English and didn’t do any of the plays on campus; but I was in the only co-ed a cappella group on campus (the Hamilton College Hamiltones) and the improv troupe. After school I moved to Chicago

to study improv comedy further and it was improv that really led me to standup. I did improv for years and eventually I just got sick of working with other people, which makes me sound like a total curmudgeon, I know.

Stand up is very tough. You have to be able to take rejection. How’d you handle your first bomb, unless you’re the one comic who’s never experienced that?

The rejection is definitely hard and it’s something that everyone -- even my comedy idols -- have experienced at some point. Early on I think that I wanted the audience to like me, which can be dangerous territory, especially for female comedians. You have to be confident and feel entitled to be up there with the microphone and that took me a while to figure out -- how to just own the stage and trust myself more. I think of standup as like training a dog -- if you get out there and you’re confident and in control, the audience is with you. But if you exude a sense of nervousness or you seem insecure, they’ll eat you alive. I’ve been doing standup for about eight years and even now sometimes I’ll have a show where I can sense that certain people in the audience aren’t completely on board with me and it makes me feel nervous, but I know to just plow through it and keep on going and eventually I’ll hit on a joke or reference that wins them over.

Is this a means to an end? “SNL”, sitcoms, head writer--what’s your goal?

I definitely don’t think of standup as a means to an end and I think that comedians who do are pretty miserable people. It has to be its own reward or else you’re crazy to do this thing. But as far as my goal, mine is pretty broad: I’d like for my comedy (performance, writing) to pay for my life. I don’t know exactly how that will shake out, but I’d like my job to be what I love to do, which is write and perform comedy. I have a book coming out in April (The New Rules for Blondes, from It Books/HarperCollins), which I hope will open up new opportunities for me. It’s a collection of humorous essays celebrating and subverting the blonde stereotype, but it’s for readers of all hair colors.

This is the time of year when we pause to think and be thankful for all we have, both materialistic and otherwise: family, friends and possessions. We gather around the Thanksgiving table and enjoy that which has been given to us. It is a time of reflection -- and heartfelt gratitude. But what about those less fortunate? There are tens of thousands of adults and children, in our state alone, who are not as blessed with the abundance we enjoy. Now is the time to think about them as well. While we take pleasure in what we have, let’s reach out to those who have not. Within the three counties of Ocean, Monmouth & Middlesex, there are numerous charities that are extremely busy, especially this time of year, caring to the needs of those less fortunate. Food charities, clothing charities, medical charities, all geared up to serve the needs of the less privileged. But these organizations need help too. They are in need of monetary donations, supplies and volunteers. Throughout our region, a great many restaurants, bars and entertainment venues show their support by hosting fundraisers and charity benefits to gather donations in support of these organizations. And, on a more personal level, some establishments open their doors to the less privileged with free meals, clothing and toys for the kids. Kudos to them all for their voluntary efforts. Within this issue of Venues NJ, our editor’s main feature invites you to read and learn about some of these food-based charity organizations and explains how you can show your support. Take a careful read of this article, then, be proactive and show your support.

About Operation Warm: Woodbridge Township Professional Firefighters Association Local 290 does not want the children in our communities to be left out in the cold. Team up with your local firefighters today, and give the gift of warmth to a child in need. Your donation will help provide brand new, American-made coats to the children in our community who need them most.

Beyond warmth, Woodbridge Firefighters believe new coats inspire higher self-esteem, keep children in school throughout the winter months and also free up tight family resources which can help create a better future.
