With the onset of cold and u season, we all want to do our best to minimizethe risk of becoming ill and help reduce the impact, or recover more quickly,if we do catch a bug. Yes, we can use the home remedies like chicken soupor large doses of Vitamin C. Scientic research has shown some things actu-ally boost the immune system and ght viruses. Some of the steps to take fortreatment and prevention are listed below.

We all know about the frequent hand washing and avoid touching the eyes, nose, and face. In addition, frequent use of hand sanitizer can help preventspreading germs.

Try to start the day well-fueled. Research from theNetherlands showed a breakfast of 1,200 caloriesboosted blood levels of gamma interferon, an an-tiviral agent, by 450 percent. Skipping breakfastshowed a seventeen percent decrease in gammainterferon. Of course, those 1,200 caloriesshouldnt be pancakes, maple syrup and a side ofbacon. A fruit smoothie, whole grain toast and orange juice are great things toinclude.

Go green with tea. Research from Canada showed green tea added to samplesof common cold viruses stopped virus replication. Put simply, green tea keeps

a virus from growing and spreading inside the body. A chemical compoundcalled EGCG, found in highest concentration in green tea, is the responsibleparty. Drinking green tea at the onset of cold or u symptoms will help keepsymptoms from getting out of control.

Get plenty of Zzzs. Lack of sleep can decrease im-mune system function by 50 percent. Eight straighthours of sleep is what will help virus-attacking naturalkiller cells operate at their peak efciency.

Get moving! Regular exercise stimulates the immune system. When sedentaryadults were compared to moderately active adults (45-minutebrisk walk ve days a week), active adults were found to havecolds half as often. And remember, when in the gym, makefrequent and plentiful use of the antiseptic wipes.

During cold and u season, just a few simple steps can meanthe difference between being down with illness for a few daysand feeling great every day.
