z TALENT SHOW z Looking back on 11.11.11 By Vihara Ekanayake D OLPHIN W AVE Issue: November 2011 Once again, the NHS held another great talent show this year! It was on November 11 th , 2011 and started at 7pm. This year’s show consisted of 14 acts, from dancing to singing to playing instruments and even presenting a video, a wide variety of talent was performed. The talent show began with an introduction performance by the 5 MCs. John, Ankit, Junro, Kai, and Alex accompanies by Benji as their drummer. The MCs all dressed up as KISS, the band, and performed one of their classic songs. It was a great hit and made the atmosphere in the room very lively and got the audience engaged. The first act was NIS48 made up of Natsumi, Junro, Tsugumi, Hyelin, and Marina. They danced to a medley of AKB48’s music, which included ‘Heavy Rotation’ and ‘Beginner’. Dressed up like AKB48, the center of attention went to Junro, who was the only boy dressed in a skirt! It was a great first act and everyone enjoyed it. The second act was by Anna Tsuda who danced the traditional Hawaiian dance to the song, ‘What A Wonderful World’. It was a very elegant and a cute performance. The third act was The Rakuen Babies, which was a performance of a Japanese song by Kai and Junro. It was very entertaining as half way through the song they began rapping! The forth act was Iichiko which was by Furuhashi-san, playing the saxophone, and Kayo-san, accompanying her with the piano. They played a very popular Japanese song and it was breathtaking. The fifth act was a guitar solo by Keanu. He gave a quick guitar performance but his cuteness stood out the most! The last act before the intermission was a video presentation by Nasa. She showed a ‘mockumentary’, which was a comedy of her and her father in the form of a documentary. Laughter was heard throughout the video, as it was very hilarious. After intermission, the talent show resumed with the seventh performance by a dance group consisting of Japanese elementary girls who Alisa Juni taught. They were extremely cute and did a great job in their dance! The eighth act was by Emilie, who played the guitar and sang, and Mimi, who sang as well. The two performed to Dynamite by Taio Cruz and they were able to deliver an amazing performance! The ninth act was by Yume Yamada who danced to the famous Party Rock Anthem. This was definitely a standout of the Talent Show as it was a glow in the dark dance performance. Everyone was “wowed” by the dancing and it was super entertaining. The tenth act was by Jacqueline Tien who played the piano, and recreated it into a very moving and beautiful performance. The eleventh act was a dance to the song by Nicki Minaj, Super bass. The dance was performed by Alisa, Rachel, and Suyeon and singing/rapping by Yume and Aileen, and it was very fun to watch. The last performance was Black Queen International, which was a variety of songs combined and danced to by Rachel, Alisa, Suyeon, and Hyelin. Like the MCs said, the performance was ‘sizzling’! Everyone enjoyed watching it. The talent show this year was a huge success and very enjoyable. The MCs made it a lot of fun with their singing, rapping, jokes, and dancing in between each act. And as for the performers, words cannot describe how impressed everyone was with them. They absolutely set a high standard for next year! J I personally enjoyed the show very much. So if you missed it, make sure you come to next year’s show because it’s definitely worth going to!

Pre Dance!! by Inhye ChoiI’m sorry for our late updates concerning dances!

Unfortunately, the November Dance has been canceled, but not to fear! We have another alternative event to make it up to you all.

There is a winter social, which will be taking place on December 14th. The time will be from 6:00~9:00pm. I know that this week would be the exam week, so you guys will need to get off campus once, and come back for the dance since school will end at 12 p.m. This will be a dinner dance, so bring a date if you can! The dinner will be served by the Cezars. Get excited for roasted chicken with potatoes

and some yummy cranberry sauce!!! It will be really great if you guys can wear something “wintery,” and something along the lines of blue, silver and white! The entrance fee will be 1500 yen, but I promise

you all, this will be the one memorable dance you wont forget for rest of your life : )

MARK YOUR CALENDARS BECAUSE YOU ALL BETTER COME!

Ishinomaki by Shaylin Chetty

On March 11 2011, the “Tohouku Earthquake” struck the eastern seaboard of Japan. On that day, it was not just the ground that shattered, but lives as well. But even with over 15 000 recorded deaths and 125 000 destroyed buildings, the world – particularly that outside of Japan, saw the tragedy last only as long as the media saw fit. Too quickly, the newspaper headlines shifted their focus to

more pressing matters as people began to forget the tragedy that wrecked Tohouku and the surrounding areas. Even now, months after the initial earthquake, the remaining damage to both the area and the

people is of a catastrophic level.

Nagoya International School’s Habitat for Humanity trip consisted of around thirty students and fifteen teachers who travelled to the Ishinomaki area and in order to aid the ever decreasing amount of relief work available. Performing tasks ranging from washing

stones to clearing gutters over a period of three days enabled all those involved in the trip to collaboratively

lay a massive dent in the intimidating cliff of remaining cleanup work. The Habitat trip to Ishinomaki sought to remind people that help is still needed, to remind people we can do more, and most importantly to remind

the people of Ishinomaki that people still care. Expecting that the government would have done most of the relief work, seeing the area for the first time was a rude awakening from an illusionary reverie. The fact that there are still so many

people needing so much help was a painful dose of reality.

However, with all that said we must keep in mind that the work was not, by any means,

perfect. Constantly being drained both physically by the manual labor, as well as mentally by the seeming insignificance of our work, at time it seemed our work there was pointless. However, every time another local walked past and said

“Thank You” it was as if we had both our bodies and minds renewed. Over and above all, at the end of the day, we could say that it was not solely the hard work done that made the trip fruitful, but those simple, yet

heartfelt, words of thanks that allowed us to truly grasp the meaning of our wok to these people.

The year is going by right before our very eyes. It seems only days ago that the school year had begun; yet it is now officially the beginning of winter. With each passing day, our beds become warmer and warmer, and it becomes more difficult to leave the bed. I have also noticed a common question arising among all high school students; “How do I stay HOT in the winter?”

I know you guys are already extremely cool people, since we all learnt how to stay cool at the beginning of the school year. Being cool is fine, but being cool might just end up being too “cold” at this point in the year. On the other hand, being hot will warm up your chilly body and soul, and you’ll be able to comfortably enjoy the harsh winter of Nagoya.

Here are some tips to stay HOT:• Stay inside

o The football field or the terrace is only comfortable with a warm summer breeze rolling in- not those blazing cold drafts of the winter. Unless there’s snow, the hot ride is to be inside.

• “The Small Space” theoryo It is scientifically proven that being in smaller spaces will trap your body heat, making it a

very effective way to stay hot. For additional warmth, try cramming yourself into that small space between the sofa armrest and that one guy or girl you’ve always had your eyes on; perhaps if you are lucky, you’ll go home feeling quite warm inside.

• Eato The key to staying hot is eating the right foods. Warm soup and spicy cuisine, as well as

fatty foods will help raise your body temperature. A mug of hot chocolate with your friends is also very effective.

• Exerciseo I know you’re tired and cold. Exercise is the one way to solve both problems at the same

time. I mean, a sports star is hot at any time of the year- so this is probably worth giving it a try.

• Surf the interneto Nothing beats the feeling of an overheating laptop warming you at the thighs as you read

all your happy birthday messages on Facebook. Note that this is only possible if you were privileged enough to be born in the great months of November through February.

• Get a dogo A dog sitting on you is the warmest thing on a chilly night. Cats can work too, and turtles if

you’re feeling adventurous.• Wear appropriate clothing

o Sure, being in the vogue is partially about exposing your skin, but a guy or girl with a fever sneezing their head off doesn’t seem very hot to me. It may be hard, but there should be ways out there to look hot in a fleece jacket.

• Be coolo Being hot, ironically, is all about being cool. Be confident, mature and ‘chill’ about

everything, and that attitude may get you someone to warm your heart on Christmas eve.
