First Young Sportsman Deer Hunt Oct. 31-Nov. 1

NASHVILLE --- The first of two Tennessee young sportsman deer hunts for the 2020-21 season will be held the weekend of Oct. 31-Nov. 1.

Youth ages 6-16 may participate. Participating youth can use gun, muzzleloader, or archery equipment.

Young sportsmen must be accompanied by a non-hunting adult, 21 or older who must remain in position to take im-mediate control of the hunting device. The adult must also comply with the fluorescent orange regulations as speci-fied for legal hunters. Multiple youth may be accompanied by a single qualifying adult.

Archery season began in the state on Sept. 26 and the first segment ends Oct. 30, the day prior to the opening of the young sportsman hunt. The second segment of ar-chery only season is Monday, Nov. 2 through Friday, Nov. 6. Muzzleloader/archery season starts Nov. 7. In Unit CWD, gun/muzzleloader/archery season begins Nov. 7.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency recommends that all hunters obtain a 2020-21 Tennessee Hunting and Trapping Guide. The guide lists license requirements, the counties and bag limits for each of the different deer management units. The guide is available on the TWRA website. www.tnwildlife.org, the TWRA App, and where hunting and fishing licenses are sold. ---TWRA---

Updates on Asian Carp, Duck Hunters Survey, Annual Awards Made at TFWC MeetingBuffalo Ridge Refuge Site

HUMPHREYS COUNTY, Tenn. --- An update on Asian carp, results of a recent Tennessee duck hunt-ers survey, and annual divisional awards presentations were among the business conducted at the October meeting of the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission.

The one-day meeting was held Friday in the Tom and Wendy Beasley Education Center at the Ten-nessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s Buffalo Ridge Refuge. It was the TFWC’s first formal meeting at Buffalo Ridge Refuge which comprises about 2,000 acres in southern Humphreys County.

Cole Harty, TWRA’s Aquatic Nuisance Species Coordinator, provided an update on Asian carp. There has been no significant change in carp distribution since the previous update. TWRA and Tennessee Valley Authority fisheries crews conducted concentrated surveillance in East Tennessee reservoirs and tailwaters and did not encounter any silver, bighead, or black carp.

It was reported that TWRA has been awarded nearly $1.7 million from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to conduct carp control and monitoring in the coming year. This is a substantial increase from previous years that will advance the agency’s capacity to control and monitor carp populations. Asian carp work will be conducted in the Tennessee and Cumberland basin as well as Reelfoot Lake. Plans include providing incentives for the commercial removal of Asian carp, monitoring popula-

As requested by the TFWC, results of a recent survey of Tennessee duck hunters were present-ed. The survey was conducted by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and shared by Wildlife and Forestry Division Chief Joe Benedict. Results provided insight on how to increase hunter opportu-nity, how to improve the draw process for hunters, and the best way to be equitable and fair in utilizing public lands for duck hunting.

The TFWC passed Tennessee’s threatened, endangered, and in-need of management lists. The lists are required to be reviewed every two years.

The Wildlife and Forestry Division recognized its Wildlife Technician and Wildlife Biologist/Manager of the Year. The Biologist of the Year winner is Luke Hadden, who works as a wildlife manager with the forestry unit on Catoosa Wildlife Management in the Upper Cumberland Area. Bobby Buttram is the Wildlife Technician of the Year and also is part of the forestry unit at Catoosa WMA. He is a 30-year veteran.

Wildlife Manager Brandon Gilbert of Wolf River WMA received the Firebird Award. The National Bob-white Conservation Initiative recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to habi-tat restoration of bobwhite quail populations. Appreciation awards were presented to West Tennessee CWD partners and processors Chad and Sadonna Cardwell and Barry and Cindy Clampitt for their contributions in the CWD campaign.

The Boating and Law Enforcement Division announced a pair of annual awards. Wally Lessig was named the TWRA Part-Time Boating Officer of the Year. He serves in TWRA Region IV in District 41 which encompasses 10 counties in East Tennessee. Dustin Buttram is the Boating Officer of the Year. He serves in Region III’s District 31 which contains Center Hill Lake, Dale Hollow Lake, and the Caney Fork River.

Retiring Agency pilot Barbara Shaffer was honored. She served as TWRA’s lead pilot for 22 years. She played an instrumental role in activities across multiple divisions within the agency which includ-ed wildlife counts and surveys, fish transportation, and law enforcement details.

**ATTENTION MUZZLELOADER HUNTERS**

The new Traditions NitroFire muzzleloader is not le-gal for muzzleloader hunting in Tennessee. The Ni-troFire is loaded from the breech and therefore does not meet the legal definition of a muzzleloader in Tennessee. TWRA defines a muzzleloader as those firearms which are incapable of being loaded from the breech.

Statewide muzzleloader season opens November 7. - TWRA -

Ellis has increased production by addressing water quality and quantity issues and creating addi-tional space to raise trout. He has promoted fishing through various media outlets and hosting special fishing events.

The hatchery operates on a gravity-fed system that receives water from the Tellico River. To make the process safer and more efficient, a new intake top with spray bars, a new walkway, and safety lights were installed.

In addition to protecting the water supply, Ellis also increased hatchery capacity be renovating pools and added a new fiberglass tank to the existing raceway. improve growth and reduce the mortality rate have been made.

With Ellis leading the way, Tellico Hatchery is active in the support of service men and women. Among the activities is an annual Veterans Day weekend.

Bean has been with the TWRA for 42 years. He has served most of his career at Buffalo Spring Hatch-ery where he made improvements in trout production and continues to be an asset. In his current role, Bean organizes the maintenance of reservoir sampling equipment ranging from nets to boat motors. His skills at repairing boat motors, trailers, electronics, and sensitive equipment, such as water quality meters, has meant the savings of thousands of dollars in repair bills.

In March 2020, Bean stepped in to fill the role of reservoir data collection manager after the retire-ment of his supervisor. He organized the electrofishing survey, prepared all the sampling equipment, and looked at historical data to determine sampling locations. He also ensured that enough sampling sites were visited to maintain data integrity and was able to sample each of his reservoirs within the temperature regimes required for spring sportfish electrofishing. ---TWRA---
