Chairperson’s Report

After my first report, I have used up all my literary ability and you will just have to accept a normal report.

I was surprised by the favourable comments I received from members, sponsors and staff, considering I sat

for the Year 12/Senior/Matriculation English examination 4 times before I passed

Firstly, on behalf of the club, we congratulate Mitchell Rowe on winning the Gateway District Junior

singles. His proud grandfather, Vic Rowe (aka Skid) is claiming that he was the inspiring force, mentor and

coach behind the win. Ah well Vic, we will give you bragging rights.

Next, I would like to congratulate all the pennant players for their efforts over the season. Out of the six divisions that we

entered, four divisions made the finals with Division 6 winning the flag. I would also like to thank the supporters who attended

the games to cheer our teams along.

With the plan to put a synthetic surface on the top green, the Board is looking into obtaining a grant from the State

Government. With the present cost cutting by the Government, there will be no more grants until after September 2013 at this

stage. Also, we want to get this surface right and not go through the hassles we had/have with the bottom green. We are talking

to Manly re their greens to gain more insight.

One area of the club that doesn’t get the attention that it deserves is the volunteers. Without them, the club would have folded

many years ago. When you consider that we have people volunteering for the Board, Ladies and Men’s committees, doing

umpiring, coaching and selecting, selling raffle tickets, obtaining sponsorship, cooking sausages (maybe we should change the

menu) running bowls events and functions, tending the carpeted green and working bees, I thank you for your efforts. I have

probably forgotten some group, so I apologise now. If you haven’t volunteered for any activity, we can always use more

volunteers to give the regulars a hand and/or break. Even if you have volunteered some time ago, you will be welcomed back

into the ranks. It is a great way to meet fellow bowlers. I can assure you that there will be no entry test/exam and training (if

needed) will be provided. Thank you volunteers and would the other members please consider.

Christmas is just around the corner. As we get older, we all know how quickly the years go by. On behalf of the Board, I would

like to wish all members, sponsors, staff and their families, a merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.

Geoff Devencorn

The Rural Recession has been explained in simple terms by an old-time farmer:

It all started back in 1966 when we changed from pounds to dollars, that doubled me bloody overdraft. Then they brought in kilograms instead of pounds, me

bloody wool clip dropped by half. After that, they changed rain to millimetres and we haven’t had an inch of rain since. If that wasn’t enough, they brought on

Celsius, and it never got over 40 degrees, no wonder me bloody wheat won’t grow. Then they changed acres to hectares, and I ended up with only half the land I

had. By this time I’d had enough and decided to sell out. I put the property in the agent’s hand and then they changed miles to kilometres.

Now I’m too far out of town for anybody to buy the bloody place.

Deidre’s Club Chat

Well here we are with the final newsletter for 2012. The Christmas decorations are appearing in the shops and I guess everyone is gearing up for the usual festivities.

Many of our members are off travelling to various destinations as I mentioned in the last “chat” column. Stephanie Porter has just returned from enjoying a break in Vanuatu and Lyn and Ted May are experiencing an Asian cruise taking in Hong Kong and Vietnam.

Our thoughts are with Mavis Hryczysyn and Stephanie Porter as they undergo knee replacement surgery. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, ladies.

Congratulations to Barry and Val Chappel on celebrating 55 years of wedded bliss. We also wish Barry a speedy improvement on his health problems. Congratulations also to Pat and Les Harrower who are celebrating their 60

th anniversary on the 29

th of

November. Brian and I are also celebrating our 50th

wedding anniversary on the 24th

of November.

On a sombre note we extend out sincerest sympathies to those members who have recently lost the following loved ones:

Betty Grieves – wife of past president Ernie and long time member of the ladies section

Ett Ehlers – Past president and providor

Ken Hurley – Husband of Lorraine (Laurie)

John Koutlis – Men’s section member and husband of past member, Desley

Seasons greeting to you all, may you, together with your families, embrace the joy and spirit of Christmas and have a happy, prosperous and healthy new year.

Ladies President's Report

The first two months of my Presidency has been a very busy time and it has been made easier by all the support that I have received by the Committee Members. Their contribution and effort is much appreciated.

I have had much pleasure in welcoming the following new members to our club: Fiona Penfold, Pam Worley, Wendy Peach and Bev Jonsen. I am sure you Ladies will enjoy many great days of bowls and the friendships that will be formed.

In September we held our Spring Fiesta and a great day was had by all who participated. Our Chief Decorator Marlene excelled herself in leading the Ladies to set up the Carson Room with a very colourful floral outlook.

Financial Days are going very well. Special thanks to Gayle Pratt, Bev Geldart and Marg Gallagher for their hard work in organising the teams.

Tuesday Bowls is being well supported and it is pleasing to see the return of those Ladies who have been absent due to illness or injury. Thanks to our Selectors for organising competitive teams. The collection of the Wrong Bias Donation for the Children's Christmas Tree has added a bit of fun to the day. To date it has raised $54.00.

Over recent weeks several Club Championships have been contested and some great bowls were on display. The results of these championships are:

Winner Runner Up

Novice Singles A Crocker N Clement

Veteran Singles L Hurley M Clauson

B Singles G Read A Houghton

A Singles V Elliott M James

Triples L Ford J Spall

G Read M Gallagher

C Lewis B Geldart

Club Selected Pairs and Fours are currently underway.

C Linfield, L Ford, G Read and V Elliott have been selected to play in the District Shield. M James, D Girvan, M Wells, V Elliott and R Mc Lennan participated in the Brisbane Metro Competition. The end of the year is fast approaching and our break-up day will be Tuesday 11

th December where there will be Singing, Music and Bowls.

Until next time, Dianne Girvan Ladies President

Men’s President Report My first few months in Office have been very busy. The saddest time being the passing of John Koutlis on 27 September 2012. John had a short illness after being diagnosed with lung cancer. His Funeral was held at the Greek Orthodox Church in West End on 4 October 2012. Several Members of the Mt Gravatt Bowls Club attended. John was a valued and popular Member of the Club and he will be sadly missed. I would like to extend my sympathy and condolences to his wife Desley and their Family.

The Club had Four Divisions make the Pennant Finals and congratulations to all Players of 6

th Division for winning the Flag. You

have done the Club proud. Brett Murphy from Bowls Qld visited the Club on Tuesday 23 October 2012. Brett’s role within Bowls Qld is to visit Clubs and assist with any issues to do with Bowls. For example, does the Club have a Financial Plan, future Development issues. Graham Chattin recently retired from his position as the General Manager of the Southside and Community Sports Club. I would like to thank Graham for the support he afforded the Mt Gravatt Bowls Club whilst in that position. The Men’s A Singles competition was held recently. The Winner was Kingsley Gum over Runner Up, Mark Secis. Congratulations to them both. The Mt Gravatt October Pairs was held over the weekend 20 – 22 October. A total of 48 teams nominated. Whilst the overall winners were Dave Gardiner (Broadbeach) and Ray Perkins (Helensvale), Mt Gravatt Teams fared well and shared in the prize money. Thanks must go to the Games Director Ted Read and those who assisted him over the three days, for a job well done. Many positive comments were received during and since the completion of the event. One event which I had been pushing hard was the Game held on Sunday 28 October. The idea was to raise money for Research into Prostate Cancer. I understand that approximately $500 was raised. I would like to thank all of those who participated, especially the Ladies who supported the day in great numbers. I would also like to thank Jeff McLennan for Southside’s’ support. Unfortunately I was not able to attend due to a prior commitment. The Open Singles Competition is currently under way and my thanks and congratulations to all who participated. SOUTHSIDE UPDATE

You will all note the subtle change in the column title and this is because I will be continuing

to write this column for the time being. My successor, Kim McGregor, will need a little time to

settle in to the job as General Manager before he will have the time to add writing this

column to his agenda.

I think it is appropriate that I tell you all a little about Kim so you can hopefully get to know

who this young gentleman is. Kim is a foundation employee who commenced as our first Duty

Manager when the Club opened its doors in 1997. He was elevated to the position of

Operations Manager following my appointment as General Manager in January 1999. He has always been a very

quietly spoken young man and has slipped under the radar for most people as he quietly goes about his work. Kim

and I have enjoyed a close working relationship for the past fourteen years and I was extremely proud when he was

appointed to the position of General Manager following the announcement of my retirement in September this year.

Speaking of retirement, the question I have been asking anyone around the bowls club who is prepared to listen is

“how long has this retirement caper been going on?” While I am still technically on long service leave I am really

enjoying life and I think this is reflected in my bowls which is improving all the time. It is amazing how good you feel

without stress in your life.

The Stage 5 redevelopment at the main club in Mt. Gravatt – Capalaba Road is now under way in earnest although

very little will be obvious to the members until January next year when work commences on the interior of the

building. At the moment work is progressing well on the foundations for the external extensions to the building for

the gaming room on the west side and the new bingo food and beverage facility, known as the Canteen, on the

northern end of the building. A new platform has also been installed on the roof of the building to support the

existing air conditioning plant and the additional unit that will service the new extended gaming room. The unusual

spell of dry weather has been welcomed by the contractors during this crucial period.

The cooperation of the Ladies in giving up the Carson Room on Tuesdays during late September, early October, to

allow Southside Bingo to conduct bingo sessions in the room for three weeks was greatly appreciated. My personal

thanks to Madam President and her Committee for their assistance in agreeing to our request while the ceiling was

removed from the bingo auditorium and new air conditioning ducting was installed. I heard an unconfirmed rumour

that one or two of our lady bowlers may have been converted as new bingo players during this time. This type of

cooperation can only strengthen the relationship between Southside and the Bowls Club

Thanks also to the members who supported the Prostate Cancer Bowls event on Sunday 28th of October. I certainly

had an enjoyable morning where we raised more than $1,000 for Prostate Cancer research.

See you at bowls Graham Chattin General Manager (Retired)
