You might remember that we had our own “Hidden Hero”, Jostein Bakken, whose family’s house was taken by the Germans.

As a 14 year-old boy, Jostein would ride his bike to a radio’s location to learn what was happening or go out to sea in a boat to pick up information from Allied boats. He then smuggled the information in his violin case past German checkpoints to the Resistance. He had some close calls and would have been immediately shot had he been caught.

"Hidden Heroes: World War II in

Norway" contains twenty eyewitness accounts from those who lived in Norway or were Americans who had extended family in Norway, during World War II. This unique history is told from the viewpoint of children and young adults. Living in Norway during World War II, you never knew if the person next door was a hero; a Norwegian resistance fighter. The hero next door could be a teenager going with his dad to steal grain from a Nazi train, in order to feed refugees. It could be a girl who hid messages in her instrument case, while going by bike to a violin lesson. It could be the fisherman down the street, rowing a boat full of grenades, with a German U-boat captain sitting on the seat which was hiding them. Many Norwegians risked their lives to thwart the Nazis who were occupying their country. These are their true stories. This 182 page book is illustrated with over 50 images from the Norwegian National Archives, and uses "senior

friendly" large type. "Hidden Heroes" is a Sons of Norway fundraiser to support activities at the annual Masse Moro youth heritage camp, held at Beaver Creek Reserve in Fall Creek, Eau Claire County. Three of our members Eugene Baker, Eileen Dawson, and Lillian Berge have recently passed away. We offer our condolences to their families and have made a donation in each of their names to the Sons of Norway Foundation. For many years, Lillian Berge was our “Lefse Lady”, baking lefse at our Norwegian Heritage Fest and other lodge functions. Rather than preparing everything at home and then coming to the Heritage Fest to demonstrate

rolling and baking, Lillian started from scratch (OK, she did prepare the potatoes at home). Then she showed the crowd each step along the way to make perfect lefse. We’ve

included some pictures on

page 7. It will be hard to see in this black and white print version of Skjold News, but in the picture of Lillian on the top right of page 7 she already had flour on her bunad. By the end of the day there was flour everywhere. Lillian truly enjoyed not only

See information elsewhere in this newsletter. *Should you enjoy a Norwegian Christmas concert, please check out the website for Minnekierken Church of Chicago for the date of their concert or call me (you can leave a text) at 847-220-0195. The various Chicago region Norwegian singing groups are marvelous and the coffee hour afterwards is beyond belief and worth the trip. Minnekierken is in Chicago in the Logan Square neighborhood. Logan Square is undergoing a gentrification and it is really nice to see, especially for someone who knew the neighborhood during its Norwegian heyday. Chicago's blue line subway/elevated line makes a stop right outside the door of Minnekierken. But you need to watch which exit you use leaving the underground subway. Minnekierken is on the southwest corner of Milwaukee and Kedzie Avenues. Parking can be iffy. *Are you interested in learning some Norwegian? Several of us who belong to Skjold Lodge asked that question three years ago and we are now in our sixth semester of learning Norsk. We have usually had a semester of 10 weeks and our instructor is Kari Diesen-Dahl. Kari is a native Norwegian and has been teaching Norwegian lessons at North Park College (not for academic credit) and at various venues around town. We have a good time together--lots of laughs. November and December are busy months in the Norwegian community of the greater Chicago area. Skjold Lodge is doing its share to keep the traditions going. We hope you will enjoy the plans we have made for our part in all the festivities. Our annual Heritage Fest is Sunday, November 13, 2016, taking place at our usual venue, the Ukrainian Hall, at 136 E. Illinois Ave, Palatine, Illinois. The Fest runs from 12 noon until 4 p.m. We will have displays of Norwegian crafts (rosemåling, knitting, fiber arts, knife making); lefse and krumkake baking demonstrations. genealogy information available and a fashion show of Norwegian folk costumes known as bunads. There will be great shopping for Norwegian gifts brought by Jul Hus of Rockford, and information regarding the Viking Ship in Geneva, Illinois. Barb Sorensen, a local singer, will entertain us with Norwegian melodies during the 1 - 2 p.m. hour: one set at 1 p.m. to 1:20 and another from 1:40 to 2 p.m. The Chicago Norwegian Leikerringen Folk Dancers will perform at 2:30 p.m. These entertainers will perform wearing bunads (Norwegain folk dress). Lunch will be available during the entire afternoon. Our menu includes polse (a Norwegian sausage) in lefse, waffles with lingonberry or strawberry jam, pea soup, and a very special rice pudding served with lingonberry or strawberry jam. a little in English... Why Norwegians are Driving More Slowly Norwegian motorists have slowed their pace year after year. A wild theory has been that older drivers are slowing things down. Now researchers have studied the trend. Several times in recent years traffic authorities have been able to determine that motorists of all ages are slowing down. Data from monitors in areas around the country with a speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour (50 miles per hour), show that the average speed has fallen by 1 kilometer per hour (0.62 mph) over the course of five years. It’s not very much, but still a clear break with the tendency that traffic authorities were seeing decades earlier, which was that motorists were steadily driving faster. Surveyed and Interviewed

Traffic researchers stood on the roadside and interviewed 204 motorists who passed the monitors. In addition, they recorded license plates and extracted data from the Motor Vehicle Registry of the 3,750 cars and car owners who passed. One of the goals of this study was to determine how much older age among motorists has had an effect on speed reduction. Increased age is not important

“We conclude that the increased age of the drivers explains maybe 25 percent of the speed reduction. Most of the decline in speed is explained by other factors,” says researcher Torkel Bjørnskau of TØI (Transportøkonomisk institutt, the Institute of Transport Economics). One such factor is that more cars being on the roads causes motorists to slow down. Another factor is that fewer people are driving recklessly on Norwegian roads. Why there are fewer reckless drivers, researchers don’t know. One possible explanation is the increase of boxes with speed counters. Another possible explanation is the increased media attention on road safety and speed. Gender, engine size and make of car

In this study researchers also found that cars with an owner aged 35-44 were driven fastest. After that, speed sinks steadily with increasing age. The researchers also looked at the drivers' gender. They did not find that speed held any connection with the car driver's gender. Some researchers, however, saw that cars with larger engines are driven faster than cars with small engines. And newer cars are driven faster than old cars.

Family and friends attended a private graveside service and internment at Mount Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, Illinois on September 21, 2016. Available to all who attended was a "Memory picture book". The tree was a wartime tribute to the Allies, but it also symbolized hope during the uncertain times. By bringing together so many ethnic holiday customs, the display was a reminder that there is more to join us than divide us. Since its first year, the display has certainly grown but this spirit remains unchanged. The 2016 event opens on November 17.

The 2016 program is December 3, 2016, 1:15pm. We invite you to help the league decorate the tree and then attend the December Program. This annual tradition began in 1942 with a single tree, newly decorated every day for 12 days to represent the countries fighting alongside America during World War II.
