Kirby
Dear Fellow CCR members, Last month I highlighted all of the remaining events for 2015, so this month I just want to encourage everyone to attend the Christmas Dinner Dance to be held at Meadowbrook Country Club on Saturday, December 5. We have a great band, there will be fabulous food, and most importantly, a fabulous group of CCR members there! Please attend and register now! See article about this event elsewhere in this newsletter, Elections! Election of officers for 2016 will take place during the November 13 General Membership meeting at our West Side meeting location. Currently all positions are unopposed, however nominations are open until elections. If you cannot attend and wish to be sure your vote is counted (in the event of further nominations), you can mail in the ab-sentee ballot contained in this newsletter to the club PO box. Be sure to mail it so it arrives in our PO box by November 13, otherwise your ballot will not be counted. New South side meeting location! Our South side meeting location is changing in 2016. We will begin in January meeting at Grace Lutheran Church in Chester. We thank Rob and Faye Buren for helping us obtain this new meeting location. Our prior meeting location is being expanded and remodeled, necessitating the change in meeting location. Directions to the new meeting loca-tion are on the CCR web site. Can you believe it? This is my last President's newsletter! I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as your President during the last two years. I would like to thank all of my fellow board members and volunteers who have served with me during this period, you helped keep this club as the great-est Corvette club in the world! Thank you also, members, for participating in club events, and through your participation and friendship, helping make this such an awesome club! I would like to thank our sponsors, Heritage Chevrolet and Zip Products, for their support and everything they do for the benefit of our club and our members. We are very fortunate to have Heritage and Zip as sponsors, so please return the favor to them when you can, and thank them! Finally, I would like to thank Paul Murman for encouraging me to run for President, thanks Paul, it has been rewarding, and fun! Save the wave! Your CCR buddy,

While we have a candidate for each officer position, nominations remain open and can either be sent to all three nominating committee members, or nominations can be made at the October or Novem-ber General Membership meetings. It is expected that anyone being nominated has had their nomi-nation discussed with those placing them in nominations, and the candidate has agreed to being nominated. It is also expected that the candidate has taken the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the duties of the position that they may be nominated for.
In the event we have more than one candidate for any officer position, a ballot will be taken at the November General Membership meeting. For CCR members unable to attend that meeting, an ab-sentee ballot will be published in the November newsletter and also posted on the CCR web site. Absentee ballots must be delivered to the CCR PO Box by election day, Friday, November 13 in or-der to be counted.

We had spectacular weather for our weekend at scenic Smith Mountain. Even though Friday was cloudy at our starting point in Midlothian, the sky cleared and we had sunshine for the last leg of our drive to Mariners Landing. Friday evening we got together for a Pot-Luck Dinner which was masterfully organized by Karen DuBosky. The Octoberfest Theme was a big hit featuring bratwurst, sauerkraut, German Potato Sal-ad and too many other delicacies for me to list. And the desserts were just WOW!
Saturday morning was brisk but sunny for our excursion into the mountains. 16 Corvettes and one OTC set forth west on scenic country roads across the Lake to Rocky Mount for a rest stop. From there we made our way on twisty hilly roads to the top of the Blue Ridge, then, followed the Parkway to Chateau Morrisette.
The Chateau Morrisette buildings were charming on their mountain-top setting and the crisp clear sunny day allowed viewing of the enchanting hills and dales to the west. 33 CCR Enthusiasts were seated in a private room of the restaurant for a pleasant lunch where we toasted to “the best damn Corvette Club…IN THE WORLD”. Folks tasted wines and browsed the gift shop, then set off in smaller groups for the return trip. After our return cruise to Mariners Landing, we enjoyed a group dinner at Heath’s Waterfront Grill. After dinner some folks went to the Lounge where Karaoke night was in full swing, while others ad-journed to socialize upstairs. The weekend provided for much wonderful food, fun and fellowship. Special thanks to Karen for organizing the Pot-Luck, and many thanks to Karen and her Condo-Mates for hosting the Friday Dinner and Saturday after dinner gathering. And thanks to all who participate to make our trip to SML a wonderful memorable experience. Bob Brody

This is a pre-paid event for the tour. Sign up at one of the 2 meetings prior to the event, or send your $$ to our home address. Cut-off date for registration is October 9, 2015. We can add late registrations, but you may be on a separate house tour, due to limitations on group size.

Driving Directions: Route 6 West (Patterson Ave) to Route 15 North to Route 53 West to Monticello and Michie Tavern. Approximate drive time 1:30 to arrive at Michie Tavern for Lunch @ 11:30 AM. This is a nice leisurely drive at lower speeds versus using I-64.

This will be paid directly to the Tavern for all travelers enjoying the hearty Midday Fare in a rustic tavern setting. We are allowing 1:15 for lunch, touring the tavern and gift shopping.
Monticello: Thomas Jefferson’s home in Charlottesville. Tour the grounds and the house. Price is $25 per person to be paid in advance by cash or check made out to Rick Franklin. The tour takes at least 2 hours to view the house and grounds. Since this will be in November, I am counting on great fall colors. If we have at least 25 pre-paid, I can schedule group tours and the price per person drops to $18. www.Monticello.org . There is plenty of parking on site, with gift shops and much to see of our Virginia and US history. The site is open until 6 PM on this particular day.
Please join Kathy and I as we visit another one of Virginia’s landmark sites, where the ideals of the Declara-tion – that “all men are created equal” and have a right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” were formulated 225+ years ago. Questions: cell # 804.874.2111.

Christmas Dinner Dance Montgomery’s—OD December 5, 2015
Upcoming Event Get your dancing shoes out and shine ‘em up! Once again we are returning to the fabulous Mead-owbrook Country Club (3700 Cogbill Road, Richmond, Virginia 23234) for an evening of great food, fellowship and dancing to the swing of a truly marvelous band known as L.P. & Company (more on the band later). Happy hour will begin at 6:00 PM with a cash bar and light hors d'oeu-vres.
This Christmas party is a “dress up” event, with many leaning toward the formal side (not tuxedo formal however, but you can wear one if you wish!), so please dress accordingly. No coat and tie is required for men, but customarily we wear them (for a while anyway!). Ladies you know what to do! The cost for this year’s party is unchanged from last year; just $35 for members and $70 for non-member guests. For the purpose of definition, a non-member guest is anyone who has not paid either the $25 annual membership dues or paid the $10 membership fee for their spouse or signifi-cant other.
Dinner will be served by the marvelous staff at Meadowbrook beginning at 7 PM. You must identify your entrée selection with your payment. If you do not identify your selection, one will be made for you (we would prefer for you to make the selection, so please be sure to do so!).
This year you have lots of ways to sign up for the Christmas Dinner dance. You should have re-ceived an email dues renewal notice along with a Christmas Dinner Dance registration form. You can mail in the renewal form and dinner dance registration form along with your total payment. You can also register for the Christmas Dinner Dance and pay on line using the CorvetteClubOfRich-mond.com web-site. Go to the “events” tab and find the Christmas Dinner Dance and follow the instructions. Please note there is a $5 per person surcharge to pay for the Dinner Dance on line to cover the fees associated with on line payment. You will see the opportunity to make your entrée choice selections whether you use the Christmas Dinner Dance paper registration form, or you elect to register for the Dinner Dance on line. Finally, you can sign up to attend the dinner dance in the event books at the General Membership meetings in October and November, but you will still have to make your entrée selections on the mail in paper form or on line, and make your payment.
Don’t miss this event! Last year we had just over 90 people attend and we all had a great time! This year let’s see if we can get at least 100 attending! Come on out and enjoy! Did I mention that the $35 member registration fee is only half of the actual cost of the event? (NO, I didn’t!). The club pays half for you! This is one of your benefits of membership, so please take advantage of that benefit and attend this year if you have not in the past. All of you new members who have joined since we had the Christmas Dinner Dance last year, this is a great event to meet more members and have a marvelous evening while you do so.
Finally, just be there or be SQUARE!
Your CCR buddy, Kirby

Holiday Lights at the Beach Danny Terry & Dolan’s—OD
Dec. 12,2015 Upcoming Event
Danny and Norma’s 15th Annual Holiday Lights at the Beach event in Virginia Beach is Saturday, December 12th. This is a popular event because it definitely covers CCR’s 3-Fs (Food, Fun & Fel-lowship) with: a great Corvette caravan, dinner at a beach restaurant, a chance to drive the board-walk decked out for Christmas, a party with music, dancing, fun games of chance, and for the cra-zies among us, a polar bear plunge into the Atlantic! And because this is an overnight event, we have plenty of time for mingling and socializing with fellow Corvette Enthusiasts during the dinner, the party and at the complimentary breakfast the next morning.
Details: We will meet at 11:30 a.m. at the Dairy Queen at Route 5 & 295 and depart at noon. We will caravan by way of scenic back roads and again this year Susan Jaworski and Bill Hardy have invited us to their Suffolk home for a pitstop. From there, we’ll travel to the hotel, check in and get situated before heading out around 5 pm for a great dinner at Ru-dees on the Inlet (227 Mediterranean Ave).
After dinner, feel free to take the Holiday Lights at the Beach tour on the boardwalk or head back to the hotel to prepare for our evening party. Holiday Lights at the Beach stretches from 2nd Street to 34th Street along the boardwalk with over 250 animated nautical and holiday-themed light dis-plays! It is the largest grand illumination display to grace the Atlantic seaboard AND each year the order of light displays is changed to help create a new and fresh experience for visitors. The cost per car is nominal (about $15) and includes a CD of holiday music.
November & December 2015
Please make your own hotel reservations 1-757-437-9100 (Country Inn & Suites at 1801 At-lantic Avenue) and ask for our special CCR $75 rate. The hotel has good, covered parking and if you’ve put your Vette away for the winter, come in your OTC (other than Corvette). We have an indoor pool, so bring your suits! Please pack a cooler with your beverage of choice for after din-ner partying and bring along some munchies to share. If you’re feeling lucky, join Dave Dolan in a little game of Texas Hold’em OR a game of LCR $1 dice game (Left-Center-Right). Around 9:30 pm CCR’s Polar Bear Club will take a dip in the ocean. Join them if you dare!

Upcoming Event The National Corvette Museum Bash will be held over three days, April 28 through 30, 2016. As it draws nearer we will post more information regarding activities during the event.
It is about 600 miles to Bowling Green. Marcie and I are departing Richmond the afternoon of April 26, en-route to Bowling Green. It may be a bit impractical for a large caravan. Neverthe-less if a few members want to meet up with us and depart together I will be happy to organize it. Our tentative plan is to drive to Charleston, WV on April 26 and stop for the night, and then on to Bowling Green on April 27.
If you are interested we have hotel reservations here:
Hilton Garden Inn Bowling Green
1020 Wilkinson Trace, Bowling Green, KY 42103
1-270-781-6778
We check in April 27 and check out May 1. This location is very near the museum. Call early for reservations!
We have also registered for a plant tour on April 28 at 8:30 AM. Plant tours may fill up so if you are interested you can register on line:
http://www.corvettemuseum.org/visit/plant-tours/
Plant tour registration is $7.00 per person.
I will add more info regarding Bash activities when received. Registration on the CCR web site for this event is only an indication of your intent to attend the NCM bash. Based on interest shown, I will see who may want to participate in an overnight drive to Bowling Green on April 26 and April 27. The main thing now if for those interested to reserve a hotel in Bowling Green and to register for a plant tour if interested.

A 1974 Corvette, a terminal cancer diagnosis but then what unfolded was remarkable
Shari Rudavsky, [email protected]:06 p.m. EDT October 27, 2015 .
For 22 years the 1974 brown Corvette had sat in a garage, not moving. The speedometer read 19,800, but the car
was in rough shape. The bumpers had fallen off. The owner was ready to sell.
In the summer of 2013, Jennifer Barnett, who had owned a string of muscle cars, was looking to replace her Nis-
san 300Z. She went to check out the Corvette.
“When he opened the garage door, it was my car,” she said.
Forty-five hundred dollars sealed the deal, even though Barnett
recognized that it would require thousands of dollars to restore the
car to working order.
Two weeks later, though, she had more pressing problems on her
mind. Doctors found a lump, the size of a large egg. A biopsy de-
termined the cancer was aggressive, and scans revealed a tumor
on her liver. Her doctors told her she was terminal.
One thing could take her mind off her diagnosis — that loud, mean
brown Corvette. If she had a bad day, she and her husband would hop into the car and go for a drive on the roads
around their Kirklin farm.
“My husband would put me in the Corvette, and we would lay rubber all around here. We would laugh like teenag-
ers,” Barnett said. “I actually threw myself into the car, anything I could do to keep my mind off the diagnosis.”
Nicknamed Root Beer Baby for its color, the car served as automotive therapy of a sort for Barnett. But she would
not be the only woman whose life that 'Vette would touch.
That Christmas Barnett bought special gifts for every one in her family. She then penned letters to all her loved
ones to let them know how much they meant to her.
“It’s really hard to hear that your time is limited,” she said. “You start to live differently. The things that were im-
portant to you no longer are important to you.”
Shortly before the holiday, Eric Austin, who had been her teenage son Collin’s best friend for years, died in a car
crash.
in the news Page 20 November & December 2015
A few days before the accident, Austin had entered Barnett’s living room as she tossed and turned uncomfortably
on the coach. He went to get her a pillow and blanket, and when he returned, he said, “Mama, you’re going to be
OK. You’re going to get through this.”
Barnett did not know if she would get through it. Faced with rising medical bills, she tried to sell the Corvette on several
occasions.
Each time a sale neared, her family would hide the title, and the sale fell through. The last time, she had the car all
cleaned up and stood to clear a nice sum of money. But, still, no title.
“That was her car, her safe place,” said Collin Barnett, 22, the oldest of her three children and one of the title-hiding cul-
prits.
Six months after Barnett started on chemotherapy, her doctors rescanned her.
The tumor in her breast was gone, but the one in her liver remained. Barnett
was confused; her doctors had told her she had terminal disease, but she didn’t
feel all that bad.
She opted for a second opinion.
Her new doctors performed a surgical biopsy on the tumor in her liver. When
she woke, the surgeon reported that the tumor in her liver was neither malig-
nant nor related to her breast cancer.
After finishing chemotherapy, followed by a double mastectomy and reconstruction, Barnett was declared cancer-free,
one year after she was diagnosed. Despite her relief, she remembered how hard she had struggled to find women who
were Stage 4 patients. Mentors for those with early stage breast cancer were easy to find, but finding advisers who were
terminal was a greater challenge.
“My heart is with the later stages woman no one pays any attention to because she has hair, these women who try to
raise their families, knowing the cancer will get them,” said Barnett, now 43.
Shortly after her surgery, she had a dream that she had transformed the Corvette into a rolling tribute to breast
cancer awareness.
She shook her husband awake and said, “If you guys are going to make me keep this car, she’s going to have a
job.”
The next step: Outfitting the car for the job.
Barnett approached Jim French, owner of French’s Automotive in Thorntown. French had worked on other cars for
Barnett and knew he faced a challenge.
in the news Page 21 November & December 2015
“I could double up both of my fists and put them inside the gas tank," he said. "The gas tank was rotted pretty far
out.”
French replaced the hoses, the brakes, the fuel pump, and he helped out with the cost.
Not only did he want to support Barnett’s cause, he also enjoyed the challenge.
“It makes a mechanic proud that he can do something like that,” he said, “proud to be able to look back and watch
it run and drive down the road.”
Soon the Corvette would stand out even more.
Barnett had a vision for a vehicle wrap featuring the names of women who have had breast cancer from all over
the world. A large set of angel wings also would grace the hood in memory of Austin, whose tombstone bears a
similar design.
Through Facebook, Barnett reached out for names. The list includes a woman from Brazil and a woman diagnosed
while in the service in Afghanistan. Her name appears on both sides of the car.
A mutual friend connected Barnett to Stan Charles, owner of Stan’s Sign Design, a vinyl car-wrapping company in
Indianapolis. When Charles heard her plans, he agreed to help immediately, donating everything but the wrap it-
self.
His sister-in-law, Jennifer Thompson, who works with him at the shop, had battled breast cancer 15 years ago at
the age of 28.
“Any time the word breast cancer comes up here we kind of perk up and say what can we do to help out,” he said.
When he finished the wrap for the car, he asked Thompson to deliver it to Barnett as a tribute.
Garbed in a snazzy wrap bearing the names of 100 breast cancer survivors on its hood and the names of 100
women who succumbed to the disease on the doors, the car has become a moving testament to those who go
through breast cancer.
Redubbed the Rolling for a Cause Corvette, the car now appears at community events such as sorority gatherings
and parades. Rather than driving the car, Barnett finds a local woman in the community who is fighting breast can-
cer to ride in it.
She and her crew of 20 volunteers walk behind the car, handing out pink roses to one in eight women in the crowd,
the same number who will develop breast cancer. They also bestow bouquets on women fighting the disease.
“The car itself isn’t about getting attention to the car; it’s about getting attention to those names,” Barnett said.
“When I thought this out, I thought, 'What better way than a car you don’t see on the road every day?'”

Every time Barnett drives the car off the family farm, it draws attention. A stop in a grocery store parking lot inevi-
tably draws onlookers, often to share a story about their own loved one who has or has had breast cancer.
Because she wants to keep mileage on the car low, Barnett will only accept invitations to appear at events within
the state of Indiana. She does not take the car out in winter, lest road salt damage it. To address both these con-
cerns, Barnett dreams of buying an enclosed car hauler.
Meanwhile, she fields daily requests to add more names to the car, but no more space remains.
Those names will have to wait, perhaps for another car.

REVS & RUMBLES @ THE NCM Since the immediate outcome of regula on affec ng ongoing opera ons of the NCM Motorsports Park is s ll pending, this will be our final newsle er update for 2015. As presented in the Sep and Oct NCM Ambassa‐dor reports, the issues evolved from noise generated by vehicle use of the MSP during its first year of opera on and ongoing complaints garnered from several residents residing in the vicinity of the track.
Informa on gathered for the November issue is primarily from a status report released to the NCM Ambassadors' Facebook page by the museum director Wendell Strode on October 20th. Paraphrasing, a Detailed Development Plan was approved by the Planning Commission in Feb 2014 enumera ng six condi ons requiring NCM compliance going forward. Five of the six were sa sfied in a mely manner. Condi on #5 addressed crea on of an earthen berm with sufficient noise abatement poten al to allow no substan al increase AND it required a Cer ficate of Occupancy. Although Cer ficates had been obtained for the garages, the start stand, and the fueling sta on, for the first me in Warren County history a Cer ficate of Oc‐cupancy was required for the LAND.
Since the berm had not a enuated the noise level to acceptable standards, an Accous fence was erected alongside the track and one hundred trees were planted at the western end of the property which should allow full compliance and lead to acquisi on of the Cer ficate. Other noise abatement measures are also being employed including adop on of the SCCA standard of a 103 decibel maximum limit from a single car as measured fi y feet from the track. Special equipment will be purchased to strictly enforce that limit.
On 10/19/15, the Building Inspector sent a copy of the Applica on for Cer ficate of Occu‐pancy to the Planning Commission Staff for their review. NCM officials are hopeful that the Commission staffers will complete the review in a mely manner and with agreement that full compliance has now been reached with all condi ons described in the DDP delineated in Feb 2014. If such is the case, the Building Inspector would then be in a posi on to issue the elusive final Cer ficate of Occupancy. The saga con nues . . .
