Wow! I can’t believe summer is over. But, I am excited that fallis upon us. We start up our activities having been regenerated bythe warm sun, slower pace and extended daylight of summer.Autumn is my favorite season. The bright fall colors that arecaptured by the eye and committed to our memory to be recalledduring the barren landscapes of winter are a pleasing sight. Thecooler air, the rustling of leaves, and the dappled sunshine addeven more beauty to our walks. We quicken our steps and catchglimpses of the squirrels as they scamper to find the perfecthiding spot for the nut that bulges in their cheeks. Overhead wespy the flocks of birds as the perfect “V” formation that signifiestheir retreat southward morphs every time there is a change inleadership. They take with them the joyful songs that have beenmusic to our ears. Yet, those same songs linger in our memory, also and can lift our spirits during the cold silence of winter.Another reason autumn is a favorite season of mine is related tothe holidays that fall within it. Halloween is such a fun day. I goall out with my decorations. I love that my grandchildren sharemy excitement over the holidays and am thankful that we sharethis together. That brings me to the other holiday that isimportant to me, which is Thanksgiving. It is a time to givethanks not just for bountiful harvests but also for all the waysGod has blessed us—not just the joys of life but also thestruggles.

In August, we looked in Genesis at Joseph whose story bringsGod’s providence and forgiveness together beautifully. Josephhad times of struggle and times of peace. Joseph was willing totake a hard look at his life and realize the presence of Godworking in it. Walter Brueggemann writes that Joseph was

A little boy was attending his first wedding. After the service, his cousin asked him,"How many women can a man marry?""Sixteen," the boy responded. His cousin was amazed that he had an answer so quickly."How do you know that?""Easy," the little boy said."All you have to do is add it up, like the pastor said,4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4 poorer."

After a church service on Sunday morning, a young boy suddenlyannounced to his mother, "Mom, I've decided to become a ministerwhen I grow up.”"That's okay with us, but what made you decide that?""Well," said the little boy, "I have to go to church on Sundayanyway, I figure it will be more fun to stand up and yell, than to sitand listen."

A 6-year-old was overheard reciting the Lord's Prayer at a churchservice, "And forgive us our trash passes, as we forgive those whopassed trash against us."

A boy was watching his father, a pastor, write a sermon."How do you know what to say?" he asked."Why, God tells me.""Oh, then why do you keep crossing things out?”

The Sunday School Teacher asks,"Now, Johnny, tell me frankly do you say prayers before eating?""No ma'am," little Johnny replies, I don't have to.My mom is a good cook."

A little girl became restless as the preacher's sermondragged on and on. She leaned over to her motherand whispered, "Mommy, if we give him the moneynow, will he let us go?"

Ms. Terri asked her Sunday School class to draw pictures of theirfavorite Bible stories. She was puzzled by Kyle's picture, whichshowed four people on an airplane. She asked him which story itwas meant to represent."The Flight to Egypt," was his reply.Pointing at each figure, Ms. Terri said, "That must be Mary,Joseph, and Baby Jesus. But who's the fourth person?""Oh, that's Pontius - the pilot!"

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; itis not arrogant or rude. It does not insiston its own way; it is not irritable orresentful; it does not rejoice at wrong-doing, but rejoices with the truth.
