A note for you: Recently the Vatican gave the Church instructions about what we are to do with the bodies of our brothers and sisters who have died. We should show them great respect. They have been temples of the Holy Spirit. They are holy and one day we hope they will rise in glory. The preferred way of treating the bodies of the dead is to bury them in a cemetery. In this way we imitate the example of Jesus who was placed in the tomb after dying in the cross. However, for sanitary, economic or social reasons the Church also permits cremation of the body. The ash-es of a body that has been cremated are to be treated with the same respect we give to the body of other dead persons. They are to be bur-ied in cemetery or put in a mausoleum. It is not permitted to keep them at home. It is not permitted to scatter them on some place that was special for the person who died. It is not permitted to divide the ashes among the members of the dead person family. It is not permitted to make ornaments or jewelry or anything else out of the ashes. The ash-es of the dead must be buried in a cemetery or put in a mausoleum. If the relatives of the dead person are not willing to bury the ashes in a cemetery or put them in a mausoleum, it is not permitted to have a fu-neral mass or blessing for them. When arranging for a funeral mass or blessing, those in charge must present the time and place where the ashes will be buried or placed in a mausoleum. Those who have ashes of others who have been cremated in the past should also have them buried in a cemetery or placed in a mausoleum. This is the best way to assure that respect that our dear brothers and sisters who have died deserve.
