CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION You, O Lord, have called us to enter into your gates with joyful thanksgiving, yet how often we grumble and complain. You have blessed us in many aspects of our lives, yet so often, we lack a basic gratitude for all that is wonderful in creation and in life. Restore us to joy through worship, to grace through living, and to love in all of our relationships. Remind us in all of our

living of the tremendous, heart warming gift of your Son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord, and Redeemer. It is in His name that we ask this. (Silence for personal confession)

Music Notes for today’s service

For my final worship service with you, I have chosen a range of Church music, both traditional and modern, with a brief note concerning their history and meaning. Sometimes, knowing the story enriches our faith journey.

Traditional Bagpipe. Highland Cathedral - This is very modern, being written by two German composers in 1982 for a Highland Games in Germany. It is now the most popular bagpipe tune and Irene’s favourite. Skye Boat Song - This is a folk tune which is wistful and romantic steeped in the history of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Written in 1884, it keeps coming back, most recently in the Outlander series. Amazing Grace - What can we say about this perennial favorite? What we can say is that this hymn had a major influence on early American folk music and shaped some African American Spirituals.

Traditional Music. Guide Me ,O Thou Great Jehovah - Many years ago it was our privilege to welcome Paul Manz who was both a professor and organist for many years in Chicago at the Church of St. Luke’s in Chicago. This powerful and flourishing arrangement of the old Welsh Hymn tune “Cwn Rhonnda” is also used for “God or Grace and God of Glory” Paul was a nice wee man! Brother James Air - This lovely anthem is a variation and based upon the 23rd Psalm. It was written in the 19th century by James Bain and was widely appreciated for its beautiful simplicity. The current arrangement has just been published by the music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Modern Music We have been fortunate to have Dale Hicks with us for the last seven years and his voice and music have assisted us is developing our Upper Room service. Redeemed - As our responsive praise this morning, Dale Hicks will sing a favorite song from our Upper Room service entitled Redeemed. We are not who we used to be for we are redeemed. My Story - The lyrics of this song tell the story of what God has done in our lives and in His world. The music beautifully weaves together a new song of praise with a much older hymn, Blessed Assurance. In the midst of our celebration of a successful ministry, we praise God for being the strength and power of that ministry.

Assisting in Worship Jim would like to thank the following who are assisting in worship today: Jacqueline Connelly is a member of the church who attends the Upper Room service and has helped with the worship leadership of that service. As you will hear, she also comes from Scotland. Kurtis T. Wilder is an ordained Elder and currently serves on our Human Resource Committee. He sings in our Choir and professionally, he is a Judge in the Michigan Court of Appeals. Jack Farrow is an ordained Elder and has served as Clerk of Session for many years. He is a long term member and was a member of Jim's search committee. Sandy Dodge is an ordained Deacon and Elder who served as Chair of the Worship Committee and is also a long term member of the Church. Rev. Al Timm is the Executive Presbyter of Detroit Presbytery. Al will be preaching here at all services on November 13th. Guest Musicians: Dale Hicks was the primary musician for our Upper Room service for seven years, retiring from that position this summer. Thanks for coming back for this special service. David Martin, our guest Piper, has assisted us on St. Andrews Sunday, weddings and funerals when needed.

WORSHIP SCHEDULE

The Summons - John Bell is a classmate of mine and his music has been well published and widely received. He is a minister of the Church of Scotland. The interesting part of the hymn is that in the first four stanzas, we have the voice of Jesus, and in the fifth stanza, our response. This hymn was written in 1987.

Introducing Rev. Anne Schaefer as Interim Pastor

Rev. Anne Schaefer has accepted a contract to serve as Interim Pastor / Head of Staff at First Presbyterian Church Plymouth, effective December 1, 2016. For the past two years, Anne Schaefer has been serving as Interim Pastor / Head of Staff of Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church in Livonia, MI.

Anne’s undergraduate work was completed at Albion College. She received her M. Divinity degree from McCormick Seminary in 1983. In addition, Anne has a Master of Social Work degree and is licensed by the State of Michigan.

Anne describes herself as seeking to learn the culture of the church and to work with and build on that. She affirms that she believes in Jesus Christ as her savior and that she has a personal relationship with God through Him. She affirms, too, that the church has a responsibility to uphold and model strong, wholesome values while sharing the love, forgiveness and grace of God. As well, she attests that “A church can only be healthy when it recognizes Christ as the one and only motivation for all that it does”.

Anne writes, “My style of preaching is one in which I present thoughts on God’s word to people and then hopefully send them home to allow those thoughts to incubate to a place where they actually change people’s lives.” Family involvement is very important to her; she likes to bring families to church together. She loves teaching Bible study!

Anne and her husband have two grown daughters; they live in Orchard Lake, Michigan.

We Are a Family of Faith: Share your photo (#FPCPfamily)

We thank all who participated in our recent celebration of Consecration Sunday, as well as all who have submitted 2017 commitment cards. We will provide an update on the status of pledges next week. As part of this year’s program, each household should have received in the mail a magnetic picture frame with a header “We are a family of faith.” Are you using your frame? Is it on your refrigerator, or maybe an office file cabinet? We hope so. It’s a great way to affirm your connection to those you love and our connection to each other at FPCP. If you are a social media user, we invite you to post a picture* of your magnet on your favorite social media channel using the hashtag #FPCPfamily. We look forward to seeing how you’re using your frame! If you did not receive a magnetic frame, please contact any of us so that we can get you one. And stay tuned for details about how to get additional frames. If you have not submitted your commitment card, you may submit it to Stu Dodge in the church office at your convenience. Thank you for your prayerful consideration. Tina Creguer, Martha Boeve, Jack Farrow, and Orlean Heidel Stewardship Committee

Time to Clean Out Your Closets… As you begin to go through your winter clothes, here’s an easy way to get rid of those items you no longer wear, are out of style or just don’t fit right anymore. During the Month of November, the Deacons are collecting clothing for the Open Door Mission at Fort Street Presbyterian Church. There is an estimated 20,000 homeless individuals in Detroit. The Open Door serves many of these men and women by providing food and clothing. As the winter months approach, warm clothing is in short supply. All donations of winter items are helpful; however there is a particular need for the following items:

Men’s Clothing (pant size 32 and up) Mittens, Gloves, Knit Hats Thermal (long johns) bottoms – size large Socks\Tube Socks – cotton or wool

Also needed, but not as critically, are shoes and boots. Any other winter clothing donations welcome (please do not donate summer items at this time.) The need is great. So, please consider cleaning out that closet and helping someone less fortunate. You can even shop inexpensively for items to donate at the Salvation Army, Goodwill Stores and even our own Presbyterian Thrift Shop. Donations may be deposited in the collection area in the basement across from the High School Room during the month of November. If you have any questions, please contact Craig Blunk at [email protected] or at 248-719-1203. Thank you!

Interested in a unique construction mission experience? Our church has had a longstanding relationship with an incredible orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico called Colina de Luz. We've had two amazing youth mission trips there and our National-International Mission Committee has supported them financially for many years. Last March, a group of 13 FPCP members spent a week at Colina doing construction projects and connecting with the children and staff at Colina. I'm excited to announce that we are planning a trip again next year on March 25th - April 1st. Many members of our team from this year are returning, but we would love to include additional people that are interested in spending a week doing a major construction project on one of the buildings in the complex. If you would be interested in attending an information meeting, please contact Jim Bernard at 248-305-8614. Thanks!

Nominations Sought for the 2016 "Carol Dodge" Award

In recognition of a remarkable woman who attended this church faithfully for over ninety years, Presbyterian Women created the "Carol Dodge" award. This honor is awarded each year and goes to one woman within FPCP who exemplifies a Christ-like attitude through (1) prayer, (2) Bible study and (3) living out her Christian faith. Nominations for the 2016 "Carol Dodge" award will be accepted through November 16, 2016.

Nominations should list why the person nominated has made a significant impact to the life of FPCP based on the criteria listed above. All nominations will be reviewed and the final selection will be made by a group selected by the Presbyterian Women Coordinating Team. All nominations should be placed in the Presbyterian Women mailbox in a sealed envelope, marked "Nomination."

If you are nominating someone, please place your name on the nomination letter. Further information may

You are invited to share an hour or two at a PARTY WITH A PURPOSE: KEEPING GIRLS IN SCHOOL

In Malawi, as well as many other countries, girls commonly miss a week of school during their monthly period due to a lack of supplies, limited bathroom facilities and cultural stigma. We want to equip the young women at Mthenthera CCAP with the patterns, supplies and instructions for making washable sanitary pads. Upon returning to their villages these women can teach other girls/women to make and use these items. Kits are assembled with supplies available in Malawi.

On Sunday, November 13th, Presbyterian Women will be hosting a party to assemble fifty of these kits. Please join us for a light lunch immediately after the 10:30 service in the Dining Room. Afterward, we will have stations to cut the materials needed for these kits before assembling them. We will need approximately 20-25 people to assist in this project. Girls ages 12 and up are welcome to participate. A sign-up is on the Presbyterian Women bulletin board.

Donations of flannel fabric are also needed. Please contact

Ailsa Blunk at 248-719-1291 with questions.
