WSMM Girl Scout Troop Wins Prestigious Bronze Award

Members of Girl Scout Troop 30773 were recently awarded the Bronze Award. The Bronze Award is the highest that a Girl Scout Junior can receive. Working toward obtaining this award demonstrates a Scout’s commitment to helping others, improving her community and the world, and becoming the best she can be.

The Troop Bronze Take Action Project, The Learning Garden, was planted next to our PreK Building. The next day, the Scouts gave presentations to Mrs. Tonry’s science classes and created a binder of their work that included landscape designs and poetry. A minimum of 20 hours per Scout is required to earn the award. Collectively the troop put in 180 hours. Congratulations Scouts!

Dear Parents,

On March 13, 2015, Pope Francis called for an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, which began on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Decem-ber 8, 2015, and will end on the Solemnity of Christ the King, November 20 of this year. A Jubilee is a dedicated time on the Church calendar, during which we place a special emphasis on our relationship with Christ and one another. During this Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis has called upon Catholics to emphasize the Church’s mission of mercy. We do so by practicing the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy.

The works of mercy are charitable actions motivated by Christian love by which we help our neighbor obtain what he or she needs spiritually and materially. Instructing, advising, consoling, and comforting are Spiritual Works of Mercy, as are forgiving and bearing wrongs patiently.

The Corporal Works of Mercy consist especially in feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned, and burying the dead. The Works of Mercy are not optional but are absolutely essential to living the Christian life of holiness and goodness. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2447)

Father Ed has spoken to the students on several occasions during Mass about the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy and has given examples of how they, as children, can practice the Works of Mercy. Our religion teachers have also emphasized this in their classes. Our Mission/Service Club and Mary’s Messengers are involved continually in Works of Mercy. One of our Student Council’s annual projects is to visit the Guest House at various times during the school year. Last school year and again this year, our school has received a grant from the Brown Foundation which allows our 6th graders to minister to the homeless in the Slidell Community. And finally, last week, our students participated in “We are His Hands and Feet Week”, sponsored by the National Junior Honor Society, in which they discussed and demonstrated how they can be Jesus’ hands and feet on Earth.

Please read the letter on the following two pages from Marianne Bell who is the coordinator of the Family Promise Program at St. Margaret Mary Parish. She is asking for help from our school community. There are many ways to help and she outlines these in her letter. Please consider helping. This would be an awesome opportunity for our families to practice the Works of Mercy as the Jubilee of Mercy is ending and to remind our children that we are truly His Hands and Feet on Earth.

God Bless our SMM Families,

Coach Gay

Family Promise of St. Margaret Mary

Dear St. Margaret Mary Families,

Having lived through Katrina many of us have experienced the loss of a job and our homes.

We know the pain of that loss and the daily struggle back to something normal. In St. Tammany

Parish there are over 1200 children attending school, but classified “in transition,” due to homeless-

ness. St. Margaret Mary is part of a coalition of Churches under Family Promise of St. Tammany

Parish helping in the effort to stabilize some of these families and give them a future full of hope.

For the past 18 months SMM has hosted these families for one week, 6 times during school breaks.

These families rotate through one of the 20 Host Congregation Churches one week at a time. The

Host Church provides the evening meal, some playtime for the children, a safe place to sleep and

breakfast in the morning. Every morning they are transported to the Day Center located here in

Slidell where they work with a social worker and other professionals to obtain jobs and housing. The

average stay in the program is 90-100 days. Family Promise has operated successfully for 26 years

in over 200 cities in the United States. The Archbishop highly supports this program with the help

of Catholic Charities.

The generous group of SMM volunteers involved with Family Promise in our parish have been pro-

foundly changed and extremely blessed working in this ministry.

St. Margaret Mary will be hosting again Thanksgiving Week and the week between Christmas and

New Years. This holiday season we are asking the SMM Community and the families of our SMM

school children to consider helping the Family Promise families. This a wonderful opportunity to

live out the corporal works of mercy right here in our parish.
