Preparation for Worship
Lord, your saints come from every nation and every tribe.
Such is the beauty of your kingdom, where every race and people
is honored and recognized as being made in your image.
Help us live lives of peace and reconciliation that pay homage
to the diversity of your great cloud of witnesses. Amen.
−Common Prayer, A Prayer for All Saints Day
We Gather in God’s Name
Prelude Toccata and Fugue in D Minor Bach
Ray Freeman, Organist
As the music plays, we will light thirteen candles, a visual prayer of thanks for our
Grace members who have passed away in the last twelve months. A fourteenth candle
will represent other loved ones who were not members of our congregation but who
touched our lives.

Call to Worship
Leader: Praise the Lord, all God‟s people!
People: Praise God, all the saints and the heavenly host!
Leader: God is our life‟s source, the author of our being.
People: And God is our life’s destination. We believe that in life and in
death, we belong to God.
Leader: For life present and for life eternal, we offer thanks and praise.
People: For the saints who surround us and for those who have preceded
us, we life our hearts in thanksgiving.
Leader: Let us worship God!
Hymn #686 God of Our Life
Prayer of Confession
Gracious God, you have given us the gift of life, wonderful and fragile.
Our lives and our neighbors’ lives are holy treasures, but we do not always
treat them as such. Sometimes we forget to see your image in those we
meet, responding instead to their frailties and shortcomings. Sometimes
we don’t live up to your image in ourselves, behaving in ways that are
petty, unfaithful, or all too human. At our worst, we can be small-minded,
mean-spirited, and selfish. But at our best, transformed by your grace, we
can be generous, compassionate, the bearers of your love. Forgive us for
our faults and errors and deliver us from our sin. Call forth instead all
that is good and faithful in your sight. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
Assurance of Forgiveness
Leader: The good news is that Christ calls us to new life and enables us to begin
again and again and again and again. Friends, believe the good news of the
Gospel. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!
People: Thanks be to God.

Sermon A Sacred Gift Rev. Dr. Ben Trawick
All Saints‟ Prayer and the Lord‟s Prayer
In this time of prayer, we give thanks for our loved ones who have passed from this life
to eternal life. A bell will be tolled in recognition of each congregation member who has
entered the church triumphant in the past year, as each name is lifted up in prayer.
Then the bell will be tolled ten times as we remember in silent thanksgiving those other
departed saints who have touched our lives and shaped our faith. The prayer will
conclude with the Lord’s prayer.

ANNOUNCEMENTS and OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE
The “NEW Look” in Adult Sunday School. Sunday has been extended throughout
the week with meetups on Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday; and times and topics for
nearly everyone. Contact Nelson Thurman, [email protected], for information.
Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. - “Conversations”, November 7. Election returns or a
“faith-full” discussion at Fiona‟s in Kingstowne. Celebrate faith and its application
within the walls of our church and in the community. We change location weekly!
Sundays at 9:15 a.m. - Church Turned Upside Down: The Reformation.
Building on the last week‟s topic, the world from which Martin Luther emerged, we
consider the events surrounding Luther and others, how they changed life then,
and what they mean to us now. We meet in the Family Room here at church.
Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. - Midweek Bible Study. Currently on an Old Testa-
ment journey, this group uses the Wayfinder’s Bible to negotiate a new under-
standing of the scriptures. We meet weekly, downstairs here at church.
Flash Mob Setup. If you can spare some time on Saturday, November 11, at 10:00,
please come to Wester Hall to help set up for the Flash Mob event on Sunday.
Contact John Heine, [email protected] or 703-569-8038.

Thanksgiving Baskets 2017. A small way we reach out each year to our neighbors is
by helping with food at Thanksgiving time. One more Sunday to bring non-perishable
foods and/or checks to fill bags for local families and buy food cards for ECHO.
Advent at Grace. The anticipation of Christ‟s arrival on the church calendar marks a
time of excitement while distinguishing us from the hubbub in the culture around us.
Our Advent devotional will reflect both. We invite you to contribute to this year‟s edi-
tion−a brief essay, a poem, a picture−something that shares your response to the sea-
son. For information, contact the editors: Warren Clayton ([email protected]), Jim
Drinkard ([email protected]), or Sarah Shane (Sarah.E.Shane25@gmail. com).
Financial Status. Offerings continue to trail the budget. We are well below our
budgeted giving, and, for the first time, have a deficit. Non-essential spending will be
curtailed if nothing changes. If you are behind in planned giving or plan to wait until
later in the year, please consider our current financial situation.
RECYCLING That Counts! Bring these items to us; we‟ll take care of them!
Halloween Candy - For care packages that will be sent to our college students.
Bring to Pastor Susan in the Office before November12.
Batteries - All kinds to turn into funds for AV. Place in pink bin in outer office.
Coats, Hats, Sweaters - For Help The Homeless. Place on stage in Wester Hall.
EVENTS
Games Day - Tuesday, November 7, 1:00 p.m., Family Room. What to do on a
school holiday? Come play games and have ice cream with the Aging with Grace crowd!
No plugs, no batteries, just no-tech games for fun and mental acumen. Call Pastor
Susan if you need a ride, 703-451-2900 x 3.
FLASH Mob Food Pack is Coming! - Next Sunday, November 12. A real opportu-
nity to help kids in our Springfield neighborhood who need healthy food on the week-
ends. We‟ll prepare 700 snacks for Lynbrook children in around a half hour after wor-
ship. Mission/Fellowship will provide a light lunch. Please join in this good work.
Care Packages - Next Sunday, November 12. When the Flash Mob subsides, the
Youth will kick in. Youth, stay to assemble care packages for our college students.
Computer Tutoring - November 13, 6:00 p.m. This 8-week course will cover loading
new systems, RAM, printers, web development, Word and Excel, PPT presentations,
and your questions about computers. $50 with $30 refunded for good attendance.
Fall Clean Up - November 18, 11:00 a.m. Folks are needed to rake/blow leaves, do
minor landscaping (mulching), and pick up around the grounds. Meet in the north lot.
