PARISH NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS
THE SOLEMNITY OF OUR LORD JESUS
CHRIST KING OF THE UNIVERSE is
celebrated on the last Sunday of the Church
year. It recognizes the messianic Kingship and
eternal Priesthood of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
This feast affirms that Christ possesses, as our
God and Redeemer, sovereignty over each
individual person, all families, all communities,
all governments, all nations — and, indeed,
the entire universe itself. His Kingdom is one
of truth and life, holiness and grace, justice,
love, and peace.

FOLDING SHOPPING CARTS NEEDED
St. Ann’s Food Cupboard has passed along more than 25
shopping carts donated by thoughtful parishioners from St.
Paul and St. Ann’s Parish. Once again, to
assist many of our older clients at St. Ann’s
Food Cupboard, we are asking for
donations of folding shopping carts.
These may be used or purchased new
and dropped off on the porch of St. Ann’s
Rectory in Nyack. Many of our guests
travel on foot and our bags are heavy. Please consider
making their Saturday trips to our Cupboard more
manageable by donating a cart.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Some years ago the TV magazine “Sixty Minutes” did a piece on the financial disaster visited upon people who let their credit card debt pile up to an over-whelming degree. I remember specifically the lament of a young wife and mother who admitted that she forgot that a bill comes in the mail at the end of the month for all those who pay “with plastic,” as the saying goes. That last was unforgettable.
If you have already perused the readings for this weekend’s liturgy you likely know where I’m headed. Just as some people forget that there will be an accounting for our spending, so there will be one for our sinning.
Not the most pleasant of thoughts is it for Thanksgiving weekend? But some-times there will be clashes between the Church, or liturgical calendar and the one hanging in your kitchen or the one on your cell phone. Today in the Church could actually be subtitled “New Year’s Eve.” It is the last Sunday of the current liturgical year, and the Church wants us to be mindful of that stupendous day when this world will end. That day will feature, according to St. Paul, a general judgment of us all by the Supreme Judge, God Himself.
With these readings, especially the Gospel from Matthew, the Church wants us to step back from all the things we’re doing that have a way of absorbing all our energies, physical and spiritual. Then we forget that the main thing is still the main thing: our relationship with God. Our love and obedience to what He demands of us as our Creator.
The way Matthew describes the scene is powerful, because it presents a simple line of demarcation, namely service of others. That one line goes to the heart of the matter: “I say to you, what you did/did not do for others you did/did not do for me.” All the selfishness and entitlement that our present culture urges us to bring to the bargaining table of life suddenly sounds like the ugly thing it is. Especially when just outside our scope of vision lie the needy of the world.
Just as last Thursday we gathered with our families around the table groaning with goodies in the food department and prayed gratefully for that food and the countless blessings we enjoy as Americans, so on this Sunday of Christ the King we call to mind our need not to squander them. In addition, we can pray sincerely for those who have less than we do of this world’s goods. And before we dare compose our Christmas list of what more we’re wanting, we can resolve to use the coming Advent season as a time for giving to others.
Not just at the end of this short Advent month, but at the end of time there will be recorded next to our name a grand total of credit. And the Supreme Judge will smile. Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
This is the eighth in a series of “one-minute” explanations of different aspects of the Catholic mass. They will appear here once a month.
The Procession Mass always begins with a procession. Depending on the situation, the procession can be long and ornate with a cast of dozens, or very short, sometimes just the priest himself. Often at the head of the procession is a crucifer, an altar server carrying a cross or crucifix.
While it may seem that the procession is just pomp and circumstance, it is actually rich in meaning and symbolism. First, the cross symbolizes Jesus, and helps us to "[keep] our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith," according to Hebrews 12:2. The candles in the procession symbolize the light of Christ, which we are all supposed to bring to the world. And the procession itself symbolizes the Church, the people of God, a pilgrim people making their way toward heaven. Remember, the Mass is the heavenly banquet, the wedding feast of the Lamb!
Finally, the procession may conjure up images of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Just as then, we, the people, welcome Jesus into our midst as He offers His Body and Blood for us.
All this gives us good reason to pray for vocations to the priesthood. For without the priest, there can be no Mass.
