A note from the GenerAl mAnAGerBruce Furman, CCMWhat a great time of the year! We are still blessed with warm days to cruise the lake or sit on the veranda for a dining experience. It’s also a time to be with family and friends and remember the good things. The Club can be your gathering place. Give us a call and we will make room for you and your family this holiday season. Or, if you want to stay at home and have us prepare all the food, give Emily Bolton a call and take advantage of our holiday take out menu.
Don’t forget to make your reservations online today for our annual Thanksgiving Brunch, the Tree Lighting and Member Guest Holiday Party, Santa Brunch, Lighted Boat Parade, and New Year’s Eve. We anticipate these events will not only be fun but have great attendance.
I hope that you have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving!

For all who read my Sailing Scene article in the October edition of the Watch, you must have wondered if my calendar had been turned upside down. That article stated that the 2018 Peninsula Cup Regatta was “in the record books” when, in fact, it hadn’t happened yet due to hurricane Florence! The
Regatta and the Oyster Roast were postponed one week, but then what a weekend we had. The Club did an amazing job adjusting to the postponement and the weekend, especially Sunday, turned out great for sailing. This year’s Pen Cup was truly “one for the record books.”
The end of October may be the end of PYC sponsored races for the season, but it’s not the end of sailing for our members. On November 10th and 11th the Lake Norman Yacht Club is hosting the Carolina Keelboat One Design Regatta, which they have opened up to PHRF boats. The typical mid-fall breezes should make this a fun regatta.
The PYC Junior Sail program continues to move forward with new sails for the 420’s and the hiring of a new coach. You might have noticed the new 420 sails at the Pen Cup Junior Regatta. They look quite smart with the PYC burgee

emblazoned on the mainsails, and they will certainly make our Junior team more competitive! The new Junior sail coach is Colin Rupp. Colin is a Level 1 Certified US Sailing Instructor and has previously held positions of Head Sailing Instructor at Charleston Community Sailing and the Cape Fear Yacht Club. You can expect to see Colin out working with the Junior Sail Team on Thursdays and Saturdays.
The Fall also gets us thinking and planning for next year, reviewing what went well in 2018 and identifying aspects of our sailing program that we want to expand in 2019. Our current thoughts are to continue to expand the Junior Sailing program with both club staff and volunteers, and to identify new opportunities for the adult learn-to-sail and social sail aspects of the program. Look for some changes after the first of the year that will support the expansion of the sailing program for the membership.
I am encouraged by what I’ve experienced over the past two years with all of the growth and support happening at PYC in the area of sailing. We are blessed with many talented and willing leaders and volunteers from within both the sailboat arena and the powerboat and social arena. I look forward to seeing what we are all able to accomplish together in the future.

Battery prep for the winter There is a lot to do to get your vessel ready for the winter. Taking
care of your battery is certainly something that I believe most people forget and is very important. This usually is an oversite for boats 26’ and smaller, especially if you keep your boat in the water. These boats typically do not have any type of battery charging system, which can be a problem. Batteries power a number of different electronics on a boat, but one of the most vital pieces of equipment is your bilge pump. If this piece of equipment fails, it could mean a sinking boat! A working bilge pump can drain a very strong battery, so make sure to keep some type of trickle charging system connected at all times!
Marina Manager reminder for preparing for the winter1. Start off clean! Have your boat fully detailed which will include a good coat of wax. It will make that winter time grime much easier to come off for spring time.2. Stabilize your fuel. Keeps fuel fresh and helps with moisture.3. Fill fuel tank to 90%. This leaves room for expansion and will help with condensation.4. Pump out waste. This will make for a much better experience next time you board the boat!5. Winterize all systems, water, waste, engines, etc. by flushing the system with non-toxic anti-freeze or protecting with an APPROVED heating source!6. Take any excess items, towels, floats, etc. off the boat to help avoid mold and mildew in the spring.7. Charge your batteries!8. Cover the boat. Make sure all poles are secure and covers are tied down.9. CHECK YOUR BOAT!! Don’t put it away and forget. This most always is a very costly mistake!!
There are many other factors to keep in mind when preparing for the winter but always remember a little bit of prep can save a whole lot of money!

Well, summer is well behind us and cooler days are here! Make sure your vessel is prepared for the change of season. The PYC Ship’s Store is ready to help you with any of your winterization needs. Remember to keep Safety First and keep your vessel prepared for the approaching season. Harry Smith and his Team are ready to help you with any boating need.
We have just finished two of the largest boating events at PYC: The Poker Run and The Peninsula Cup. It sounds repetitive, but they both set records again this year. With the help of 50+ volunteers and the involvement of many of the members of PYC, these were two spectacular events this year. Both events held Silent Auctions with proceeds donated to Levine-Dickson Hospice House and the Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center. This year, we (PYC members) contributed $20,000 to these two charities. Needless to say, the charities truly appreciated the donations. Thank you PYC members.
The Peninsula Cup hosted 37 boats in 4 divisions this year. The Junior Regatta hosted another 20 boats and is expanding for 2019. The Poker Run had over 570 hands played toppings last year’s numbers. Each year, more and more members (including Social and Yacht Members) become part of the Poker Run by using shuttles provided by the club and committee.
Raft-Ups have become very popular. One event hosted some 30 boats with as many as 100 people participating. In addition to food and refreshments, we have added entertainment this year. Please come out to the next Raft-Up and enjoy the afternoon. We provide a Raft-Up Manager to help anyone dock and tie up. We make it easy. Just come and enjoy the entertainment with other PYC members.
Finally, the Lighted Boat Parade is scheduled for December 8th. It is your last chance to earn points for the 2018 Ed Sherrard Power Boater of the Year award. This award is presented at the end of the year to the Power Boater accumulating the most points for participating in events throughout the year. Even if you do not enter for the points, the Lighted Boat Parade is a great event to watch from the docks or clubhouse at PYC.
Remember to watch the Club calendar. Thanks to Bruce Furman and the entire PYC Team, the Club is a year-round organization focused on all our members. We have lots of events scheduled all year for everyone with many different interests. I look forward to seeing you at the Club.
