1 Website: www.vva535.org Volume 28 Issue 11 November 2018 Gentleman and Ladies, Capture the moment. Capture it with the realization that our nation is closing in on the 100 th anniversary of the end of the WW I, “the war to end all wars.” World War I began in 1914, following the June 28, 1914 assassination in Serbia of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and lasted until 1918. During the conflict, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire (the Central Powers) fought against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan and the United States (the Allied Powers). The United States had joined the war on April 6, 1917. Under the leadership of Major General John J. Pershing, more than 2 million American troops fought on the battlefields of France. In November 1918, some 47 miles northeast of Paris, in the Forest of Compiègne, Allied Supreme Commander, Marshal Ferdinand Foch, after three days of negotiations, at 5:00 a.m. signed an armistice, a cessation of war - on air, land and sea - in a carriage of Foch’s private train. The Armistice was to take effect hours later, at 11:00 a.m. on 11 November 1918. Post-war, in 1919 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day. Beginning in 1954, the United States designated November 11 as Veterans Day to honor veterans of all U.S. wars. British Commonwealth countries now call the holiday Remembrance Day. In the present day, the 11 th Hour of the 11 th Day of the 11 th Month is a time to give pause and to reflect upon all who serve. It might also be a time to reflect upon the values expressed by our United States armed services within whose branches all of us rightfully claim duty to God and Country. Common treads run through the expressed values of all branches. Is it fair to suggest these values continue to constructively impact our lives? Army Core Values: Loyalty; Duty; Respect; Selfless Service; Honor; Integrity; Personal Courage. Marine Corps Core Values: Honor; Courage; Commitment. Air Force Core Values: Integrity first; Service before self; Excellence in all we do. Navy Core Values: Honor; Courage; Commitment. Coast Guard Core Values: Honor; Respect; Devotion to duty.

Writing Your Story for INCOMING (Ongoing repeat solicitation)

Ideas for your story: • Think about what you appreciated about the

Vietnam experience. There is surely a means to segue into that with very little reflection on the negative aspects of war.

• What did you appreciate about the Vietnamese people during your deployment?

• Can you steer away from the bad stuff and \reflect on the best experience you had in the Nam?

• Surely you had a close buddy and you supported each other. Maybe there is a story in that.

• What really got you through the day-to-day anxieties and fears? There might be a positive recollection in that regard.

• How did your experience instill in you a sense of patriotism that you possibly express every day of your life.

So far we have heard from Ruud, Epps, Chaix, Hamer, Chuck Holmes, current Marine LCpl. Jesse Hernandez, Kent Hawley, and Mike Laborico. (Thank you!) No writer needs to dwell on the negatives of war. Each of us who was there lived the negatives, and all of us are better people for having served, especially when we look at how we matured as a result of our experiences. Each of us has derived a sense of being and an energy that is different from what it might have been had we not been sent across the pond. Do share with us, in your own words, something of that chapter of your life. And, thank you for your service. Forward your story to Bart Ruud at [email protected] or hand deliver to Bart.
