November 2017 SOUTHEAST UPDATE Life on the Mississippi On November 21 st , Southeast students were treated to a performance of the play “Life on the Mississippi” performed by the Gretna Theater. Based on Mark Twain’s autobiographical coming- of-age classic, Life on the Mississippi recounts the story of a young Samuel Clemens as he leaves home to train to become a steamboat pilot. In the process, he learns about life; death; love and writing…all while navigating his way from boyhood to manhood; from being Sam Clemens to becoming Mark Twain. Dropping Temperatures As we are now experiencing colder weather, please remember to clothe your child adequately for the elements. Students must have jackets to participate in outdoor recess. Also, many students have been showing up at school as early as 7:45 AM. Please note that we do not have staff on hand to supervise these students. Front doors will open @ 8:15 for breakfast only. On cold or rainy mornings, (32 degrees or less) students will be able to come into the gym @ 8:30. Please plan your drop off of students, so they are not standing out in the cold. Winter Concert The Winter Concert is just around the corner! Any student in band, orchestra, or chorus will be performing. All students who are in fourth or fifth grade are a member of chorus. Our concert date is Wednesday, December 6th at 2:15pm and 6:30pm. Due to the limited space in our auditorium during the 2:15 concert, we are asking that all families who are able to attend the 6:30 concert instead of the 2:15 one do so. However, if you cannot attend the evening concert, you are welcome to attend at 2:15. The evening performance is mandatory for all students in band, orchestra, and chorus. A letter will be sent home with students in the near future regarding specific details for the concert. See you there! Veterans Day On November 10 th , the Southeast community sponsored a veterans parade inside the building. The program started with the 5 th grade students singing the national anthem for our visitors. The veterans then paraded through our hallways as our students cheered, handed out cards, and showed their appreciation for veterans in our community. The program ended with a performance of “Taps” by Mr. Copenhaver. The event was very well received and was broadcast on Facebook Live on the southeastelementaryschool facebook site.
