We present a Devonian-through-Cenozoic tectono-stratigraphic evolutionary model that in- cludes several previously under-reported elements and events. These include: regional Devoni- an orogenic collapse; Jurassic karst formation on the Crackerjack Ridge; rift-related Jurassic maf- ic submarine magmatism in the Burger area; regional Berriasian-Hauterivian foreland flexural uplift that produced the Lower Cretaceous unconformity; Neocomian salt withdrawal from the Popcorn Trough; Barre- mian contractional tectonism above the northern Hanna Trough; widespread Cenomanian uplift and erosion; extensive Maastrichtian-aged transpressional inversion that drove the formation of a regional anticlinorium beneath the central Chukchi Shelf and, among others, several stages of Paleogene transtensional collapse. Although we contend that the US Chukchi Sea is a prolific petroleum province, we don’t discuss petroleum systems here; rather our focus is on observations and geologic interpretations that we hope will contribute to the understanding of the tectono-stratigraphic evolution of the Chukchi Sea and the wider circum-Arctic region. New Geologic Interpretations from beneath the Chukchi Sea: Off shore Alaska, USA

In the context of Shell’s recent suspension of exploration activities in the Chukchi Sea and in the spir-it of knowledge retention, we present some key details of Shell’s regional geologic model for the US Chuk-chi Sea. Our model builds on the work of many predecessors, including those from the USGS and BOEM, and it comprises interpretations from modern 3D seismic data as well as re-interpretations of well data.

We present a Devonian-through-Cenozoic tectono-stratigraphic evolutionary model that in-cludes several previously under-reported elements and events. These include: regional Devoni-an orogenic collapse; Jurassic karst formation on the Crackerjack Ridge; rift-related Jurassic maf-ic submarine magmatism in the Burger area; regional Berriasian-Hauterivian foreland fl exural uplift that produced the Lower Cretaceous unconformity; Neocomian salt withdrawal from the Popcorn Trough; Barre-mian contractional tectonism above the northern Hanna Trough; widespread Cenomanian uplift and erosion; extensive Maastrichtian-aged transpressional inversion that drove the formation of a regional anticlinorium beneath the central Chukchi Shelf and, among others, several stages of Paleogene transtensional collapse.

Although we contend that the US Chukchi Sea is a prolifi c petroleum province, we don’t discuss petroleum systems here; rather our focus is on observations and geologic interpretations that we hope will contribute to the understanding of the tectono-stratigraphic evolution of the Chukchi Sea and the wider circum-Arctic region.

About the Speaker:Tom Homza has been Shell’s Principal Regional Geologist for Alaska since 2005. Although there have been

several detours over the years to various basins & assignments, he has primarily worked exploratory projects along the Arctic rim from NE Siberia to the Sverdrup Basin with a focus between the Russian border and the Mackenzie Delta. Prior to Shell, Tom worked as Alaska Offi ce Manager and Senior Exploration Geologist for Encana Oil & Gas and he held various roles at BP in Anchorage and in London from 1994-2002. He is a past President and Vice President of AGS. Tom received his BSc in Geology from the University of Vermont in 1989, his MSc in Structural Geology from UAF in 1992, and his PHd in Structural Geology from UAF in 1995.

From the President’s Desk:Wow it is hard to believe that winter is upon us again. I just returned from a two week walking vacation in the Provence area of southern France to fi nd winter happened while I was gone. My wife and I had a great time walking through the vine yards looking at all the limestone outcrops of southern France. It re-minded me of growing up in the limestone outcrops of Iowa (yes there were actually outcrops in Iowa).

One piece of great news for the society is that the Gem and Mineral Society have decided to set up a scholarship endowment fund and direct part of the proceeds from the fund to the Alaska Geolog-ic Society to give out as another scholarship. Our portion is expected to be $1500/year which will allow us to help another geology student working on Alaska projects. Sue Karl is pretty excited about the news.

One item the board is concerned about is the low attendance at our last two lunch meetings. If anyone has any ideas on what we can be doing to increase the numbers at our lunch meetings, please let me know.

Regards ~Larry [email protected]

Alaska Geological Society Hosts USGS Public Assessment Review

The USGS is conducting an updated assessment of technically recoverable oil and gas resourc-es in the Nanushuk and Torok Formations in NPRA and adjacent state lands and waters. In prepa-ration for the upcoming assessment, a public geology review meeting will be held in Anchorage on November 7, 2017. Primary objectives are to (1) present the geological framework on which the assessment will be based and (2) solicit feedback from the geological community regarding the geology and interpretations that represent the foundation of the assessment. An overview of meth-odology also will be included.

The meeting will be hosted by the AGS and held at the BP Energy Center, 900 East Benson Blvd, Anchorage. The presentation and discussion will be held from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m., and USGS personnel also will be available for expanded discussions in the same room from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Please note the room is NOT available from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Attendance is open to anyone interested in the scientifi c foundation on which the assessment will be conducted. Feel free to send any questions to Dave Houseknecht at [email protected]
