The Great Thanksgiving Luke 13:29: People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their

places at the feast in the kingdom of God. Some of us are anticipating the arrival of the Thanksgiving Holiday now less than a month away.

With the onset of chilling temperatures, we look forward with anticipation and warm thoughts to gathering with family and friends to share in the annual Thanksgiving feast. Throughout history,

gathering for meals meant not only satisfying the most basic human need for food and drink, but also marked the most significant experiences and relationships of our lives. We gather around tables with loved ones to celebrate weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and other

special occasions. Through ordinary people, food, and drink we often find God revealing Himself to us.

The Great Thanksgiving is coming! No, I’m not announcing a new animated cartoon featuring the

Peanuts Gang. I’m not even referring to the greatly anticipated Thanksgiving Holiday. I’m referring to the Eucharist… also known as Holy Communion, the Lord’s Supper, or the Mass. No matter what you call it, Communion is a celebratory meal through which God feeds, nourishes,

interacts, strengthens, and otherwise reveals Himself to us in covenantal ways.

Eucharist comes to us from the Greek word meaning giving thanks. The early Church picked up on the words of Jesus as He gave thanks before sharing the Passover meal with His disciples, and instituting the New Covenant. The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took

bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This

cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 1 Corinthians 11:23-25

As we enter this season of Thanksgiving, I invite you to accept Jesus’ invitation to celebrate the Great Thanksgiving. As sons and daughters of the King, may you taste and know the goodness

of God. May you be restored, nourished, and strengthened to do the work of the Kingdom. Psalm 107:1-9 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Let the

redeemed of the Lord tell their story—those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south. Some wandered in desert

wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle. Let them

give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

Onward and upward in Christ! Pastor Kendall

2 Peter 1:5-8 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

SUNDAY MORNINGS

9:15-10:15

There are a myriad of “voices” demanding the

attention of our children. They speak through

text books, entertainers, social media, friends,

peers and families; all teaching their version of

ethics, morality, justice, human behavior and

personal responsibility. Some of these voices

have merit, others, not so much. As a church, we

hope to equip our youth with sound teaching that

will enable them to discern the “voices”

bombarding them. Turning to the True Voice, we

seek wisdom that comes through the study of

God’s Holy Word and the insight of the Holy

Spirit. Sylvia and Laura encourage all Middle &

High School Youth to meet Sunday mornings in

the chapel to learn and talk about Christian faith.

ALSO: On the 2nd Sunday of each month,

Pastor Kendall & Karen will be in the classroom to

connect with the teens, opening the Scriptures

together to discuss topics that teens deal with

every day (we will bring the donuts ☺).

MEN’S SUNDAY MORNING STUDY “Becoming a Contagious Christian”

Communicating Your Faith in a Style That Fits You Mark Mittelberg, Lee Strobel & Bill Hybels will prepare you to be a contagious Christian who is active in leading others to Christ. ALL gentlemen are welcome to join in Pastor’s Study at 9:15-10:15 to work through and discuss the material.

ARE YOU MISSING SOMETHING? There are a variety of pans, plates, casseroles, etc., left at church (maybe after a funeral lunch or church dinner) and we would like to find their rightful owner. Please look on the yellow cart if you are missing an item from your kitchen. If items are still there at the end of the month, they will be “adopted into a new family” or taken to St. Vincents. Thank you!

HOLIDAY BAZAAR Concordia UMC invites you to their annual Bazaar on SATURDAY, NOV. 4th, 8:00 AM-2:00 PM. The Finance Committee gave me the following advice column to someday include in the Hawk Talk. I share it with you today. DEAR AMY:DEAR AMY:DEAR AMY:DEAR AMY: I live in the suburbs of Baltimore and attend church weekly. My husband and I have an annual combined income of $70,000 to $75,000 a year, and we contribute $20 weekly in the collection. I am amazed at the number of people who put a $1 bill in the collection basket. Maybe they don’t realize that the money has to pay the priest or minister, keep the air conditioning working and, of course, pay the mortgage, among other things. Would you please comment on this? Generous Giver DEAR GIVER:DEAR GIVER:DEAR GIVER:DEAR GIVER: According to my calculations, you are contributing 1.4 percent of your annual income to your church. I don’t want to quibble, but that is well below the customary 10 percent that you would be contributing if you were tithing. I mention this because I want you to know that snooping around in the collection plate is not only unseemly but also misleading. Many regular church-goers pledge considerable amounts in checks enclosed in envelopes, which are (thankfully) sealed. For some people, a dollar or two makes a huge statement.

We are so grateful for the generosity

of our church family. Through fund-

raisers and regular giving, the

financial demands of BHBUMC have

been faithfully met. With that being

said, the Finance Committee has

brought to our attention the steady

decline in Sunday offerings. Knowing

full well the economy influences our

pocketbooks and wallets, we also

want to share a Biblical principle that

bears looking into. I ask you to read

the following with an open heart to

hear what God may be speaking to

you in the area of…(do I dare say it)

MONEY and STEWARDSHIP.

STEWARDSHIP Psalm 65: 9-12 You care for the land and water

it; you enrich it abundantly. The

streams of God are filled with

water to provide the people with

grain, for so you have ordained

it. You drench its furrows and

level its ridges; you soften it with showers and bless its

crops. You crown the year with your bounty, and

your carts overflow with abundance.

This scripture talks about the abundance that comes

from the land God has given us to Prepare, Plant,

Cultivate and Harvest. Most of us can attest to the

blessings of overflowing crops and gardens this year;

the growing season produced a good harvest. And

for these blessings we give THANKS TO GOD for His

provision, giving a portion back to Him as he calls us

to return the “first-fruit”. How do we do this? Through

our TITHES.

Last month, Pastor Kendall showed the kids

what tithing looks like. He gave each child a bag of

10 Quarters. He set one coin out of ten aside and

said this is a tenth or TITHE. Explaining that God asks

us to give back a tenth of our income to Him, he

asked if anyone was willing to give back that one

quarter, keeping the rest to use how they wanted.

Most everyone did so, some even giving more than

one! We should all give as readily! But you might be

saying to yourself… “Its one thing to set aside ten

percent from $2.50, but if I gave 10 percent of my

income to the church each week, that would be

hundreds of dollars! That isn’t in my budget!”

Here is where I challenge you to believe the

WORD OF THE LORD from Micah 3:10… Bring the

whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be

food in my house. Test me in this, says the LORD

Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the

floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing

that you will not have room enough for it.”

So as we look at the finances of BHBUMC

and using the principle of tithing, I ask…how are you

doing with this spiritual practice? Are you willing to

trust in God’s promises in this area of obedience?

Are you working toward giving ten percent to the

work of the kingdom? Can you take a small step

toward the full tithe until you are able to trust in his

promise of throwing open the floodgates of blessing

as you move toward that goal? GOD is able and He

will provide for you and your family. Trust Him.

Just remember…

God loves a cheerful giver!
