BEESTON BID’S TOP AT 3200 GNS AT ANNUAL SUFFOLK SHOW AND SALE

The 16th Annual Show and Sale, and First Official Society sale of Suffolk in-lamb females and ewe lambs took place at Beeston Castle Auction on Saturday 4th November in front of a large crowd with bidding from all parts of the UK including Northern Ireland as well as Belgium. The sale attracted a record pre-sale entry of 300 sheep of which 263 were forward on the day. Trade throughout would best be described as two tier, with such a large entry, buyers were able to be selective and unfortunately a small percentage failed to find new homes. That said, those that did flew away, with near record averages being recorded within each section and some tremendous top prices being achieved with almost 20 sheep selling in excess of 1000gns. The sheep were distributed near and far with a total of 71 different purchasers being recorded on the day, from Dumfries in the North, Mid to South Wales and Devon in the South. Our judge this year was Myfyr Evans of the Rhaeadr Flock and what a wonderful show of sheep were presented in front of him. The quality in terms of numbers was tremendous throughout the shed and was evident not only within the show classes, but for most of the sheep in the sale. For his Champion he chose the winner of the ewe class; this was a three crop ewe, a daughter of Strathbeg Sea The Stars and part of the Willmar Dispersal Sale from Rob Holmes of Dunchideock, Devon. Reserve Champion was the winning gimmer from the Knockem Flock of Bryden Nicolson’s Highfield Farming Ltd, based at Duns, Berwickshire for their daughter of Rhaeadr Rolex. The Honourable Mention was the winning ewe lamb, a daughter of the homebred Wharfe Lancelot from Stephen Bolland’s Skipton based flock. The top bid of 3200 gns was for the second prize ewe from Jimmy Douglas of Fraserburgh from his famous Cairness Flock. An outstanding ewe sired by Thurston Fergie and carrying twins for late January, lambing to Cloontagh Chieftain, was eventually sold after frantic bidding to Messrs Sinnett, Worcester. Next at 2800 gns was our Reserve Champion from Highfield Farming’s Knockem Flock, this 1st prize gimmer sired by Rolex was an early lamber carrying twins to the 21000 gns 2017 National Sale Champion Lakeview Bob and was sold to D & A Callan, Talbenny, Haverfordwest. R F Holmes of the Willmar Flock had taken the difficult decision to disperse their flock through this year’s show and sale. The quality of the stock was tremendous and attracted plenty of interest, kicking off the sale with a real bang. Topping their consignment was a wonderful breeding ewe who had bred the 1st prize gimmer at this year’s Royal Bath and West Show. Sired by Donbraid Devil and carrying twin to Solwaybank Rooster with the hammer being knocked down at 2100 gns to S Sufferin, Maghera, Co. Londonderry. Next at 2050 gns and from the same flock was a Ballynacanon bred ewe, this super two crop ewe by Bacarsi was a mid-January lamber carrying twins and was sold to last year’s Judge, Mark Priestly for his Limestone Flock based at Downpatrick, Co. Down.

Ewe Lambs were perhaps the trade of the day topping at 1550 gns for the 4th prize winner from R F Holmes, this was a January born daughter of Solwaybank Rooster purchased by I Barbour, Annan. 1st prize ewe lamb from Stephen Bolland’s Wharfe Flock sold to 1400 gns for a February born daughter of Wharfe Lancelot and sold to volume buyers R Hiddleston, Shawhead, Dumfries with others from the same home to 1050 gns for a daughter of Rhaeadr Rastafari. 154 CULL COWS THURSDAY Auctioneer: Simon Lamb 07815 188125

Topping at 179p or £1165

Numbers remain very similar to that of last week, with trade very much the same too. An entry full of hard worked plain cows this week, with the odd exception. As has been the case for some weeks now, trade for the bottom end very dear pro-rata to that of the better end. Best dairy bred cattle a touch firmer, with plenty past 120p with the odd exception into the early 130’s. Comparing those to the plain cows however, with very little under 80 pence, and nothing under 66 pence with plenty of light weight parlour cows amongst the entry, I know which one I’d rather eat! Foreign tagged cows remain in hot demand, with absolutely no difference between UK bred and those from the continent. Feeding types always a premium, especially with a pre movement test. As is always the case, plenty of buying power for all grades of cattle, keep them coming!!! Top prices as follows: 179p (SIM) W & M & T Parry; 158p (B SWISS) RL & PR Latham; 155p (HOL) W & M & T Parry; 152p (HOL) Showell Farms; 152p (FR) TO & GO Lewis; 149p (HOL) WJ Lewis & Co; 149p (HOL) W & M & T Parry; 145p (HOL) CJ Faulkner; 141p (HOL) CJ Faulkner. Please don’t hesitate to call Simon Lamb on 07815 188125. Today’s market average, coming in at 104.56p or £658.28 per head. (Everything in, including the lean, mean, lame and loopy!) Black and white / dairy average: 102.14p or £639.99. Black and white cows traded throughout the day at 120p to 134p for meated cows(130p to 150p younger models), 105p to 120p for steakers, 90p to 105p for stronger plain cows and 66p to 90p there after!

24 BUTCHERS CATTLE Auctioneer: Jonathan Farrall 07796 952948

A much better entry of cattle in terms of numbers, and, once again, as good as anywhere in terms of trade. Dare I say, many more could easily be sold to advantage! Best sold on the day would be the bulls with the clean coming a very close 2nd, Prime quality steers from Messrs Wilcock peaked at 214p/kg TWICE to gross £1391 and £1380 in the lump. Mark Benson sold a monster of a Hereford, tipping the scales at a healthy 840kg and grossing £1327. Great to see John Riley back in the fold selling Angus x heifers to 188p/kg or £1212 in the lump. Bull trade was a flyer once again for everything on offer, all credit to the vendors for keeping the quality good with no less than 1/3 of the entry making over 200p/kg. Wilfred Lomas topped the trade this week with a brace of homebred Lim x selling to 232 and 230p/kg, Richard Bryan came very close, selling to 226p/kg and £1328 in the lump. John Eden consigned a grand pen of black & whites, all making the same price of 169p/kg and topping at £1039. Thank you buyers and sellers for your continued support, don’t forget we always try harder at Beeston!

871 NEW SEASON BUTCHERS LAMBS THURSDAY 11:30AM

Auctioneer: Gwyn Williams 07785 350588

*Top Spot: 220.0p/kg 42.8 kg Texel Crosses – Jackie Trueman, Prestbury

Overall Average: 173.1p/kg A much more realistic entry, as all our buyers were able to take on major orders, resulting in another excellent trade throughout. Although our overall average was down on last week, a few loads of lambs of hill origin (as a Welshman, I should defend my native breeds by pointing out that they came from the hills to the East, as well as to the West!), selling at lower prices per kg, reduced the overall Market Average. All fit, well-bred Lambs, at all weights, made in excess of 180p/kg, with all Premium quality over 190p, to a top of 220p for another pen of Jackie Trueman’s outstanding quality. More quality Lambs could easily have been sold at similar trade, as all buyers are looking for meat, not frame. We do try to look after our Vendors every week……and pay you on the day! So come to BEESTON for friendly, professional service, a top trade….and take your money home with you! We’re not so far away! Plenty of vendors from North and East Cheshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire have found the way over to Beeston-why not give it a go?! AND….our buyers bid against each other!! Don’t Forget-We offer a FREE, Confidential on-farm advisory service. Please use us to help you! Distance no object. Please call to arrange a visit: Gwyn Williams 07785 350588, or Endaf Jones 07588 130133.

104 STORE CATTLE Auctioneer: Jonathan Farrall 07796 952948

Pretty much a 50/50 split of steers and heifers this week, some better cattle on offer it has to be said and trade almost back to the respectable levels of 6-8 weeks ago. Forward sorts, as always, were a pleasure to sell. Ken & Keith Watson topping the steers with their home bred Sim x at £1260 and £1215, Bernard Lowe came very close with AAx at £1170 with Blues from Karen Lightfoot to £1155. There were plenty of decent yarding cattle between £850 and £950 but please keep an eye on the age of your stores, you can keep them too long! Some much better heifers on offer today, Dave Shenton selling to £1040, just ahead of Mr Bennion at £1020 and a decent heifer from Mr Evans at £1005. Plenty of interest in good yarding heifers between £700 and £900 and there were some super youngsters on offer from Mr Alan Gardiner who sold Blue heifers to £545 at just 9mo. Thank you all for your continued support and if you have stores to sell, bring them where the buyers are; EVERY WEEK AT BEESTON. Remember, when stock is wanted, the Auction is the “yard stick” that all the direct buyers use, be a price-maker NOT a price-taker!

BEEF BREEDING

Auctioneer: Jonathan Farrall 07796 952948 A cracking entry of cattle for the catalogued sale, truly something to suit everyone and selling on a decent trade throughout. Bull trade found buyers in a selective mood and the top price of 2000gns was attained TWICE, firstly for a 4yo pedigree Angus from R & C Bates and then for a smart 15mo Simmental from Steve Whites Tirley Herd. Paul Brereton consigned a couple of fantastic 2yo pedigree Blondes from his LIZBRE herd, top call of 1800gns, just ahead of a young Blue bull from G Rowe, Chesterfield, at 1780gns. Pedigree females were topped by the Blues, a terrific heifer from G Rowe selling at 1480gns. Pedigree Lim heifers from the Threaphurst Herd of Jim & Malcolm Bennett sold to 1300gns at just 11mo. Crossbreds saw steers from Mr Terry Goldstraw to £1075 at just 13mo and heifers from the Brereton Family to £1040 being just 16mo. A fantastic entry of cows and calves topped at 2230gns for a phenomenal pedigree Angus cow with her Bull calf from S Jones, Wrexham. A reduction sale of Angus cows and calves on behalf of Mr J Buchanan found plenty of interest and topped at £1500. Local Highland breeder, Hugh Hoather sold cows and calves to 920gns and there was plenty of interest in the dispersal of Galloway x cows which topped at £890. _______________________________________________________________________________________________

Poultry keepers urged to take action now to prepare for winter Avian Flu threat The Chief Vets of Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the UK are encouraging keepers to take action now to reduce their disease risk All poultry keepers across the UK are being urged to remain vigilant to the threat of bird flu and take action now to reduce the risk to their flocks and the wider poultry industry this winter in a joint call from the Chief Vets of Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the UK. Simple measures can help to keep flocks disease free. All keepers – whether they run a large commercial farm or keep just a few pet chickens in their back garden – can get ahead of the game and take these simple steps to reduce the risk of disease before autumn migration of ducks and geese begins again this winter:

Keep the area where birds live clean and tidy, control rats and mice and regularly disinfect any hard surfaces. Clean footwear before and after visits.

Place birds’ food and water in fully enclosed areas that are protected from wild birds, and remove any spilled feed regularly.

Put fencing around outdoor areas where birds are allowed and limit their access to ponds or areas visited by wild waterfowl.

In Great Britain, stay alert by signing up online to a free service to receive text or email alerts on any outbreaks of bird flu in the UK. You can also quickly and easily register your flock online. In Northern Ireland, visit the DAERA website for further information.

Last winter, the H5N8 strain of bird flu was found in 13 kept flocks in the UK – ranging in size from as few as nine to as many as 65,000 birds. We have seen a decline in the number of new cases over the summer, but the disease is still circulating in kept poultry across Europe, with Italy the most recent country to suffer a series of outbreaks. It has also recently been confirmed in a dead mute swan in Norfolk. Government is working with groups including NFUs in England and Scotland, the UFU, RSPCA, British Hen Welfare Trust and Poultry Club of Great Britain to highlight the importance of keeping up high biosecurity even though the immediate disease risk has dropped.
