A COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER FOR Cheval RESIDENTS
Cheval Women’s Club
The Cheval Women’s Club, INC., opened
their new fiscal year season with the Charity
Awards Dinner September 19, 2016. We
had great attendance and all charities were
present. The president, Billie Byers, opened
the meeting by welcoming all returning
members, new members and guests from the
charities. Billie reported the donations
increased 43.4% over and above last year.
Our membership increased 25% above last
year, the state of the organization is well and
growing. Every single member of the
organization should be proud of their
individual contributions, which were made in
many different ways. All of the committee
women and co-chairwomen were thanked
for their work done.
Betty Carrig, Treasure was recognized for
all her efforts in arranging the August dinner
at St Joseph, North. She gave the financial
report and awarded the charity checks to the
following who spoke for their charities:
Michelle Smith, Administrative Manger
Joshua House Lutz Location
James Griffin , Lt. Colonel USA
Retired
Operation Helping House
David Caras. Coast Guard Radio
Navigator Aircrew and Aircrew Chief,
Retired
Paws for Patriots (and his service dog

Our Charities were delighted to receive our
donations and spoke as to how it would help
their causes and about their organizations. It
was very touching to hear of some of the
cases they were able to help.
We had drawings for our members and in
particular for new members and returning
members who joined during the summer
months. Sally Spencer, New Member
Ambassador announced the new members
and is active in communicating to them about
our organization and the benefits.

Blessed or Blue? Danielle Cooper
I heard from a dear friend recently who had
unfortunately been out of touch due to his
relocation out of the country last year. We
discussed our latest updates and I shared - in both a
gleeful and stressful tone - how I was “getting
ready for the holidays!” He
quickly and somberly
replied “Good luck with
that. Holidays are not my
thing.” I was suddenly
quieted and humbled,
feeling thoughtless and
insensitive. He was
divorced several years back
and I know he struggled
often with loneliness, as we
all do at some point in our
lives.
About a year ago, another
close friend who I go
waaaay back to middle
school with, lamented to
me how she couldn’t wait for the holidays to end
so she could get back to work and resume her
normal routine. She is successful by all accounts
yet all that vacation time kept reminding her what
she felt was lacking in her personal life since her
divorce: companionship.
Many of us are fortunate enough to share holiday
plans with loved ones, family, children, in-laws,
and close friends but we often forget that this time
can be a very lonely and painful experience for
many others. Many are struggling to share the
holiday spirit while managing a lonely heart, a job
loss, a sick relative, even a foreclosure. Somehow
“the holidays” with all their colorful decorations
and joyful music and endless parties tend to cast a
bright light on life’s challenges that we may be
dealing with. Suddenly, holidays for many become
a time to dread rather than look forward to.
But it doesn’t have to be that way! We don’t need
to become a scrooge or a braggart. Whether we are
feeling blessed or
blue this season,
there are things
we can do to
contribute to a
happier time for
everyone.
A R E Y O U
F E E L I N G
B L E S S E D ? ? Congratulations!
Now share the
joy. Invite that
widow over for
Thanksgiving dinner, make your parties a good
mix of couples and singles, drop off some cookies
to that lonely neighbor, fly up to see your sister/
brother/mom/dad, send a care package to a friend
or military personnel overseas, or simply let
someone know you’re thinking of them. Create
positive karma so that when you have your
struggles, others will be there for you too.
FEELING BLUE?? I
have found that the best
antidote to the holiday
blues is to take the focus
off yourself and help
another. Volunteer at the
food bank, donate clothes
to charity, offer to babysit
for a friend or tutor a child.
If unemployed, spend time
working on your resume,
a c c e p t i n g s e a s o n a l
employment and making
connections. Networking at
those holiday parties could
pay off after all! Being
helpful and constructive with your time can help
you realize the value you have to offer and
recognize the valuable person that you are.
Who says we need to follow any holiday
traditions? Create your own holiday traditions! If
you are far away from family and friends,
Christmas Day could be your day to travel to a
unique and new destination. If you are not
religious then instead of a Christmas service,
engage in a meditative or similar retreat. Don’t like
to cook? Thanksgiving dinner doesn’t have to
come from your oven nor do you even need to
have a turkey! Truthfully, you don’t have to follow
any standard holiday recipe, figuratively speaking.
Design this season in a way that supports your
desires, values and circumstances.
By doing so you won’t let the chaos, pressure or
stress of the season take away from the growth,
meaning and joy we all are capable of. As we’ve
often heard before, it’s not your circumstances that
define you. It’s
what you decide
do about your
o w n
c i r c u m s t a n c e s
that matter. Now
is the time to
work on sending
some invitations
to some very
deserving people
in your life;
wishing everyone
a very wonderful
holiday season !
