The question is oftenasked whenever wehave to change ourclocks for DaylightSavings Time. Do wego ahead one hour?

Or, do we fall back one hour? For those who possess the proclivity to remember by way of wordplay; we always fall back one hour in the“Fall” season. That is how I remember this seasonalmove. It may be interesting to know that Webster’sDictionary has a definition for both the terms fallback and the term fallback.

Definition of – Fall back 1. Retreat, recede 2. Fallback on or fall back upon: to have recourse to (whenfacts were scarce he fell back on his imagination)

Definition of – Fallback 1. something on which one can fall back: RESERVE —often used attributively ; a fallback career; a fallback position2 a falling back: RETREAT.

It is interesting to notice that both definitions canmean “retreat,” but the definition I like best whendescribing the church is the first one under fallback.Something on which one can fall back: RESERVE—often used attributively; a fallback career; a fallback position.

Isn’t this what spiritually healthy Christians do, when faced with any new decision or new challenge? We certainly don’t “retreat.” We findways to adjust, to build a fresh course, to challengeourselves in new directions, for the living of thesedays. We use all of our “reserves,” because of thehope we have found in the God we have come toknow in Jesus Christ.

In medical research, researchers are only beginning to uncover the secrets of our DNA—thebio-chemical threads that hold the key to so much ofour physical nature and future. It seems to me thatcongregations have a “DNA” as well—only it’s not

biological, it’s spiritual. That’s what Robert Nortonand Richard Southern wrote about a few years agowhen they wrote:

“In your congregation’s DNA is encoded your genetic blueprint: your spiritual heritage, how yougrow, how you handle challenges, and how you canfulfill your higher potential to be what God hascalled you to be.”

I am always hopeful and eternally grateful that inour church’s DNA is a fallback mentality; where weare always finding ways to adjust, to build the bodyof Christ in fresh ways; to challenge ourselves innew directions, for the living of these days. So, “retreat” your clock back one hour if you must, butfallback spiritually, because God has great designson our future. It is going to take our heart, mind, soul and all our reserves to discern God’s call.

(Norton, Robert, Southern, Richard, Cracking yourCongregation’s Code: Mapping your Spiritual DNAto create your future, Jossey Bass, San Francisco,2001 p.3)

Caring and Outreach Happenings at FPC

Relief for Victims of Natural DisastersNatural disasters—hurricanes, earthquakes and wildfires -- have been headline news in recentweeks and much cleanup remains to be done. The Mission Connection committee encouragesFPC members who are able to consider donating to relief organizations such as World Vision,Salvation Army, Americares, American Red Cross, Save the Children and MAP International. To research recommended organizations, go to charitynavigator.org and click on “Hot Topics.”

Changes Coming for Angel Tree! Believe it or not, it’s almost that time of year when westart thinking about Christmas and how we might providefor those unable to provide for themselves. FPC’s tradition of supporting the Angel Tree Project will continuethis year, but with some changes. We are teaming up withBethany for Children & Families to provide Christmasgifts to Quad City children who receive Bethany familyservices. Bethany’s social workers and therapists havesubmitted over 450 names for gifts so far this year, andare thrilled that they will have FPC’s help in meeting thatneed. Bethany’s Angel Tree Project will allow us to reacha greater diversity of needy children than in past years.

Gift tags will be available for pick-up in Fellowship Hall on November 12 and 19. Each tagwill include the name, age, size, gender and gift suggestions for a child. You can participate bypicking up one or more tags, then returning an unwrapped gift or gifts to Fellowship Hall byDecember 10. Total gifts for each child should not exceed $45. Our gifts will be delivered toBethany, which will wrap and deliver them to each child’s caregiver in time for Christmas. Be-cause of confidentiality rules, congregational members cannot be involved in delivering thegifts. If you have any questions, please contact Deacon Doug Wells (563-370-6457).

Pastor Pilar Earns International AwardThe Rev. José Pilar Álvarez Cabrera, pastor of the Lutheran Church of Guatemala(ILUGUA), an FPC mission partner, receivedthe 2017 Agent of Change Award, givenevery year by the Swedish organization “Effect” as a way of emphasizing those who fight against povertyand injustice. Pastor Pilar received the distinction as a result of hisstruggle in defense of the rights of indigenous people in ruralGuatemala. He received the award in Stockholm on October 26, including $10,000 for use by ILUGUA in its ongoing mission.

According to the awarding committee, “For nearly 15 years, José Pilar Álvarez Cabrera has defended the most invisible citizens of our world, indigenous peoples, in a country wherethose who fight for human rights are harassed, threatened, victimsof false accusations and violence, while those who are behindthese criminal acts go unpunished… He struggles for the right of indigenous Chorti people to continue living in their places of origin and have access to water, natural resources and environmental sustainability in and around Las Granadillas Mountain in Guatemala.”

The committee highlighted that this year there were four LatinAmerican countries in the pre-selection for the award, all with important struggles. This indicates that in the face of injustice andsuffering, there are many voices being raised to fight for dignity.

FPC Handbell Ensembles: An Advent Service of Lessons and Carols Wednesday, November 29, 6:00 PMKickoff the liturgical season of Advent with a twist ona traditional Service of Advent Lessons and Carols. While there will be sung congregational carols, most ofthe music will feature FPC's bell ensembles: VesperBells, and the newly formed Matin Bells (middle schooland high school age youth) and Kildalton Quartet (anauditioned four-in-hand ensemble).

The Lessons and Carols service is a tradition that developed in England after WWI as church leaders

sought to bring more creative worship into the Church of England following the war. The service grew in popularity, and many major churches throughout Europe and America present them each year (most notably atKing's College at Cambridge, which is broadcast internationally on Christmas Eve). Modified with Adventreadings and carols, this service is an intimate way to initiate the season of expectancy before the busy monththat follows.
