Pastor’s Corner November 2016 “but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." (Joshua 24:15b)
I think many of us know or have heard this verse as it
applies to serving the Lord. In many ways, it’s a
simple statement of faith that serves to remind us that
“all we have belongs to God.” I think we can even say
that Joshua 24:15b is a likeable verse. It’s verses
24:14-15 that challenge the believer to acknowledge
what God already expects. So, we say, “As for me
and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
Here’s why we say that, Vs. 24:14 “Now therefore
revere the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in
faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors
served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the
LORD.” Verse 24:14-15a call the believers to serve
God with sincerity and faithfulness.
As a faith community, we serve together in this Body of Christ we know as St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Together we’re the family of God and each of you is needed in serving the Lord. We serve together in
worship, in fellowship, in Holy Communion, and in financial giving. Everyone who reads this newsletter
has something to contribute and has been blessed by God’s love and faithfulness. These blessings are seen
all around, whether in our homes, our cars, our vacations, or our church community. I believe we can say,
“We are blessed.”
As we think of our church community and the need for financial support, how can you help? How can any
of you not see the essential role you play? Each of you plays a key role at one time or another, but unless
we all work together, there can be no ministry, no outreach, no fellowship, no church. There is no “most
important ministry” in this church because all we do is for the Glory of God. “As for me and my
household, we will serve the Lord.” Can we truly say that about our faith community as our household
continues to struggle with financial commitments for mission and ministry? Is our household truly serving
in the best way we can?
Here are the numbers as of October 24, 2016: Estimate in Giving for 2017 (33 households out of 180
households) have made the commitment for a total of $119,560.00. You will find the budget for 2017 in
this newsletter. We will vote to approve the budget at the November 13th meeting. Is God’s household
lifting up the mission and ministry? I am calling on you as members of God’s household here at St. Paul
to fill out an Estimate in Giving.
As I read a book on the topic of financial giving, I read a statement made by Eugene Grimm regarding the
topic of pastors asking the people to give to the church. Mr. Grimm stated, “Apologizing for asking
people to do ministry is like apologizing for the crucifixion. Our Lord does not want us to make
apologies, but to repent of our sins and turn to God for newness of life.” Therefore, as the leader of our
faith community, I cannot apologize for being compelled by my love for God to commit to him and ask
that you give with the same love and commitment.
“As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” I hope you will consider making and submitting
your households estimate in giving this year. You are essential as is the entire Body of Christ.
Faithfully Serving,
Pastor Frank

Blueprint for the Future Membership Challenge – October Update
Can you feel the thanksgiving in this crisp fall air?! Thank you,
cheerful givers for a fabulous start to the “Blueprint for the Future”
Debt Reduction Program! I will be sharing the update monthly on our
exciting progress, and I’m thrilled to share some good news with you
all!
Your generosity has sponsored 458 square feet ($33,670) of our
blueprint! That’s an entire Sunday School room and its adjoining
closet! To give you a tangible and visual way to appreciate this,
please visit the blueprints posted around the church and preschool to
follow this real progress and give a little cheer for each blue room that
is completed by your heartfelt commitment.
And, now for the great news… As I was coloring in the rooms by the
preschool, I was thrilled to have parents inquiring and joining in the
excitement as they expressed their desire to sponsor square footage,
eager to see their child’s classroom the next to be filled in! Let’s
continue this momentum and team up with these parents to cover a
classroom in blue before the end of the year: 30’x16’= 480 sq ft!
What a great way to pay it forward for these little
ones — giving our next generation sturdy feet to
continue in the mission of our church and spread
the love from these walls to our community!
And, as a reminder, each of us has the ability to
impact this commitment. Of course, there is our
own giving, but we can also share our Blueprint
for the Future with friends and family.
For those of us on social media, we have a link
to a Go Fund Me Account that can easily be
shared with others. People outside our immediate
church community have already responded
positively to our Blueprint and graciously sent
donations via Go Fund Me.
We also have Clear Give for online giving directly from St. Paul’s website. You can give one-time only
or set up recurring donations within Clear Give. And we have the special green envelopes in the pews and
in the office.
Yours in Christ,
Lauren Cummings,
Coordinator

The Liturgy
Article 2
By Susan Anderson, [email protected]
A good friend of mine who is a member of the Church of
Christ has recently been attending an Episcopal church.
When I asked her what she thought of it, her reply was that
it was confusing. She had to pay so much attention to the
mechanics of what was going on, like when to stand and
when to sit, that she lost track of the meaning of what was
being said.1 This is a common response of someone
attending a liturgical church for the first time. On the other
hand, when I go to a non-liturgical church, I feel like I
haven’t been to church at all because it seems so casual.
Liturgical churches are often referred to as “high church,” that is, churches that have maintained the use
of liturgy, vestments, tradition, and ceremony in worship, sometimes referred to as “smells and bells”
because of the use of incense and bells during the service. “Low church” on the other hand, refers to
churches with a much more informal worship style. So what is liturgy?
The word “liturgy” means work of the people. It refers to the formalized order of worship that we use. As
early as the second century, there was a fairly well established order of worship. It began with the reading
of sacred texts followed by a sermon explaining those texts. Prayers were said, the kiss of peace was
exchanged, and the bread and wine were presented and consecrated. The words of institution were read
and finally, after more prayers, the bread and wine was shared with the people. If you look at our modern
liturgy, you will see that we follow a very similar order of worship with four parts — Gathering, Word,
Meal, and Sending. Thus, our worship service is biblically based.
Our worship service is also based on the traditions of the Catholic Mass. Martin Luther did not set out to
create a new church. He only wanted to eliminate abuses in the existing church. So he did not throw out
all the traditions of the Roman mass. He did have concerns, though, that he set out to correct. The primary
problems, as Luther saw it, were heretical beliefs concerning the Lord’s supper, withholding the bread and
wine from the people, the fact that the mass was said in Latin, and the lack of singing by the people.
Instead of being the work of the people, the mass had become the work of the priests. All these things led
Luther to develop the German mass that is one of the foundations of our modern worship service.
I would like to end with two quotes of Martin Luther. First, concerning the importance of worship, Luther
said, “To gather with God’s people in united adoration of the Father is as necessary to the Christian life as
prayer.” Luther’s feelings about music in the church were also strong. He said, “Next to the Word of God,
the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world.”
Next time, I will discuss specific parts of our worship service. I welcome questions and comments.

Scrapbook Committee News
If you would like your events included in St. Paul’s Picture Book, committees need to give three or four
3x5 or 4x6 clear PRINTS to Kim McCormick, Admin. Asst. and indicate that they are for the Church
Scrapbook Committee. Also include the date of the event, event name, and names of the individuals in the
picture if possible.
The Church Scrapbook Committee is in need of Church Picture Directories. We currently have 2006,
2002, 1999, 1996, and 1986. If anyone has any others that you are willing to give to the church, it would
be greatly appreciated. Please drop Church Picture Directories at the office.
Thrivent Action Team Project Once again, we have joined with Lutheran Services of Florida to help make Christmas brighter for their
adult guardianship clients. These clients have no one to help with their needs and wants during the year.
Most, if not all, live in nursing homes. Volunteers will be needed to help assist in shopping, and
a Thrivent Action Team grant has been requested to help with the costs.
In addition, one may also donate a gift. Names, sizes, and wants/needs will be available later. This is such
a heart-warming project, and St. Paul has participated for many years. The date for shopping has not been
determined, but will be in mid-late November. Watch the bulletin boards for the date!

Social Ministry News
Tree of Warmth
We will again be doing the Tree of Warmth, and the tree will be going up on November 20. We are going
to be collecting socks, gloves/mittens, scarves, underwear, stocking caps, and ‘add water’ foods such as
individual sized Mac & Cheese or soups. Please consider donating to the tree and helping us literally give
warmth to our community where it needs it most.
Manna Food Pantry Donation
We are officially in the holiday season spirit! As we close in on Thanksgiving this month, we’re setting
our sights on our Manna donation and getting started with the Tree of Warmth. We had 400 pounds of
food to donate to Manna in October, which was definitely better than we had been doing. However, we
know we can do better. We have set goals for the next 3 months of 750 pounds for November, 600 for
December, and 1,000 for January. We can do this together!!
Eye Glasses Collection
Don’t forget the Lion’s Club eyeglass collection box on the Social Ministry table. Their volunteers clean,
sort by prescription strength, and package the glasses. Recycled glasses are distributed to people in need
in low- and middle-income communities where they will have the greatest impact.
Blessings to you all,
