Hello! My name is Ava and I am telling you about how Nut Swamp Cares. I talked to Nurse Lucille and I asked her about the loads of food in her office. She told me that the food is being donated to a local organization called “Middletown Helps Its Own”. I will tell you about the charity!

The organization “Middletown Helps Its Own” is a Middletown­based charity that you donate food and clothing to all year long, especially around the winter and holiday seasons, to people in need. It has been around for over 49 years ­ that’s a long time for people to be contributing to within our community! In the first year of operation, the charity distributed food baskets to less than 50 people. But 4 decades later, this number has grown to over 300 families during Christmas time and over 250 families at Thanksgiving.

All of the schools in Middletown have a big food and clothing drive around the holiday season. All 17 schools in Middletown donate to this charity, including Nut Swamp Elementary school. The people getting the food will be very happy, I

mean have you seen how much food there is in Nurse Lucille’s office? The families receiving the food don’t have much money to buy food or clothes so we are really helping them out! They aren’t used to having good, nutritious meals like we all do and that is why it is a great thing to give back this holiday season, or anytime of year!

Did you know that this past September, NASA scientists announced that there was water on Mars?!

In many ways, Mars is the most like Earth of all of the planets. Mars has slightly longer days than Earth and also has seasons. They also both have polar caps that are really cold.

The scientists found one more thing that makes Mars more like Earth. Liquid water runs down canyons and crater walls. The water leaves long, dark stains on Mars that run downhill when it is warm, but the water goes away in cooler weather.

Right now, scientists are trying to figure out where the water comes from and if there really is life on Mars!

Hi! My name is Emma H. I love the series Dork Diaries and wanted to tell you about book number 5. It’s called, Dork Diaries WCD News: Tales from a Not‐So‐Smart Miss Know‐It ‐All. The main characters are Nikki, Chloe, and Zoey (who are all BFFs), Brandon (Nikki’s boyfriend), Brianna, (Nikki’s annoying little sister), and Mackenzie (Nikki’s number 1 enemy).

It was New Year’s Eve, and Nikki and Chloe were at Zoey’s house having a sleepover to celebrate. As they were gobbling down pizza, double‐chocolate cupcakes, M&M’s, ice cream sundaes and soda, they were playing Truth Or Dare. Nikki picked dare, and Zoey dared her to toilet paper Mackenzie’s house for revenge. Mackenzie had done really mean things the year before, like locking them up in the storage closet and stealing their costumes for the Holiday On Ice show (you can get book 4 and read it to find other information). She also stole Nikki’s

diaries. Nikki, Chloe, and Zoey slipped out of the house, grabbed a few rolls of toilet paper, tip toed to Mackenzie’s house, and then started wrapping the bare trees.Collect all the books, and for the boys who are reading this article, look out for the boy series of Dork Diaries, titled The Misadventures Of Max Crumbly!

The Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated in November in Mexico. To honor their ancestors, kids and grown-ups decorate paper mache or clay skulls with paint, beads, and feathers, or make colorful drawings and paintings of skulls.

Odell Beckham Jr. is a wide receiver from LSU. He currently is playing on the New York Giants. Odell Beckham Jr. broke the record for the most 100 or more yard games as a rookie. He is a wide receiver who was drafted in the first round in 2014 NFL draft.

Odell Beckham Jr.’s first season was named rookie of the year. Odell Beckham Jr. is a great young wide receiver. People say he has the best catch of all time. Beckham was named an alternate for the Pro Bowl in 2015 and because of an injury to another player, he was able to play.

He is the first wide receiver rookie to make it to the Pro Bowl. That is a really big deal!

In 2015, there was an 8:00 p.m. Giants game vs the Dallas Cowboys (they are rivals so this is a big game). There was a shotgun formation and Brandon Carr was on him. OBJ went deep and Eli Manning threw it to OBJ and he jumped and pulled down the ball with three fingers…. TOUCHDOWN! There was holding on the defense by Brandon Carr. So far, the Giants are doing well and they have a 5 – 5 record going into their bye week.

Also out of LSU was a famous basketball player named Shaquille O’Neal. Shaquille O’Neal was roommates with Odell’s Dad. Shaquille O’Neal is Odell Beckham Jr’s godfather! What a power house combination!

KIDS’ OPINIONS:BY MOLLY D., GRADE 4MS. SHAPOW

I think kids should not have anymore homework. I think homeworkcan get hard in 4th grade. I am goingto tell you a few reasons why.

One reason is because kids are already learning things in school. I think they don't need any more learning after 3:05. Kids have time during school to learn. That's why people invented school, not for you to have more work when you go home.

Another reason kids don’t need homework is that kids have after school activities like soccer, dance, CCD and gymnastics. We are too busy to always be doing home-work. Don’t you want your kids to be active and par-ticipate in fun activities, not just at home watching TV and doing homework? For example, I have a friend that has dance 5 days a week and does not have much time for homework because she is so dedicated to her dance.

These are a few reasons why I think kids should not have homework, and if you have more you should write for the Tiger Times!

Ms. Shapow is the 4th grade substitute for Mrs. Shanklin who just had her second baby boy and is out on maternity leave. For this issue of the Tiger Times, I decided I would interview Ms. Shapow because she’s new, and if you saw her walking down the hallway you probably wouldn’t know who she is. Ms. Shapow brings a lot of fun and enthusiasm to our classroom, and I am glad she took the time to talk with me about herself. When I asked Ms. Shapow why she wanted to become a teacher, she humbly stated that she felt she wasn’t the best student growing up, but she had one 5th grade teacher whom she loved, Ms. Carlson. Her fifth grade teacher was her inspiration and she wanted to be just like her. Here is what else I learned about Ms.Shapow.

A: I taught at Manalapan Elementary.

Q: What is your favorite subject to teach now?

A: Reading

Q: Where did you grow up?

A: Virginia and Manalapan, NJ

Q: What was your favorite subject when you were a kid?

A: Social Studies

Q: What do you do in your free time?

A: Shop

Q: What is your favorite part of being a teacher?

A: I like getting to know the students.

Q: What is your least favorite part of being a teacher?

A: When students don’t follow directions.

Q: If you couldn’t be a teacher what would you be?

A: Social worker

Q: If you could make any change you wanted in this school what would you change?

A: I would want bigger classroom libraries so the students would have more books to choose from.

Did you go to see The Peanuts Movie? I saw it. It was really great. The movie is about Charlie Brown trying to meet the new little red haired girl. All of the Peanuts Gang was in the movie. My favorite characters are Charlie Brown and Snoopy. Charlie Brown is my favorite character because so many funny things happen to him. Snoopy is my favorite character because he is so funny when he is the World War I Flying Ace. You should go to see The Peanuts Movie. You will laugh so much!

50 years of sweet treats!

Have you ever seen the very cute little Pillsbury dough boy on TV? Well, would you like to know more about it? That is what this article is about.

The creator of the Pillsbury doughboy was Jaden Huebsch. He made The Pillsbury doughboy in the spring of 1965 to be an animated figure. Poppin’ Fresh (The Pillsbury Dough Boy) sells biscuits, dinner rolls, sweet rolls and cookies for the pillsbury brand. Since Pillsbury brand has such good treats, they were named the best brand in the 20th century.

Guess what? The Poppin’ Fresh also has a family! Their names are Granpopper, Granmommer, Popper, Poppins, Poopie, Baby Bun Bun, Flapjack, Biscuit Cat and Uncle Rollie. His family doesn’t have their own commercials, but they are sold as dolls and playsets. The Pillsbury dough boy has been around for fifty years.

Sir Stanley Matthews

You may not know it, but one of the best and oldest soccer players ever was Sir Stanley Matthews. He was born on February 1, 1915, in England and retired at age 50. Matthews started playing in England when he was 15 years old. In his careerMatthews made,259 appearancesand scored 54goals. As a famoussoccer player,Stanley Matthews,won the Ballond’Or and the European Soccer Player of The Year. Sir stanley Matthews got hurt while doing a bicycle kick, but still recovered and was still an awesome soccer player.

Some of Stanley Matthews nicknames were the, “wizard of the dribble” and “The Magician.” In world war two, Matthews had an injury in the air force that cost him his career from age twenty four--- age thirty. He was the oldest soccer player ever to retire at 50. He began coaching for Port Vale in 1967 to 1968. He sadly died in 2000, he was 85. He was the oldest soccer player to retire and lots of people remember him.

The Ranger 8 Crash - 50 Years Ago

Ranger 8 was a NASA project created in the 1960’s. The ranger spacecraft was originally designed in 1959. The two solar panel wings were each 739 millimeters wide by 1537 millimeters long. It was a planned crash and it took over 7,000 photos of the moon's surface. The Ranger sent thousands of pictures back to NASA and NASA's employees studied the pictures. This was the second most successful mission in the Ranger series. Ranger 8 reached the moon on February, 20th 1965. The first image was taken at an altitude of 2,510 kilometers. The final image was taken right before impact. After a very long flight, 64.9 hours to be exact, the Ranger crashed. This crash of Ranger 8 has given us thousands of pictures of the moon’s surface. In the same year that Nut Swamp was born, the first ranger crashed on the moon!
