We have had a busy fall so far, despite work sanctions. A huge thank you to our entire Springfield staff (teachers, custodians, office staff, TAs and DECEs) for always keeping the needs of our Springfield students at the forefront. Thank you also to our small but mighty money counters who got the money counted so we could go ahead with Junglesports. It is because of the dedication of staff and parents that Springfield is one of the best schools in Peel! Our school spirit continues to be outstanding as we had another fantastic Halloween Parade and some friendly competition with our pump-

kin decorating contest!

We have many extra-curriculars continuing and new ones beginning this month. Our Junior choir is preparing for the Remembrance Day assembly and the Primary choir will begin getting ready for the Winter Concert. Mr. Martin will be getting Borden-ball started for our Junior students beginning next week. Please watch for a letter about Bordenball coming home. Mme Riverin will continue dance club on Tuesdays after school. Our annual skating sessions will begin at the end of November. Watch

for information about this fantastic program in the near future.

Our Student Leadership team has had their first meeting and were full of some great

ideas. Please note the spirit day schedule in this issue.

As we resume our activities, you will receive more information about Progress Report

Cards and Parent Teacher Interviews. We will be receiving information and direction

from the school board in the near future. Our school council will be meeting soon and

will be looking at making plans for pizza days. Please stay tuned.

Character Education At Springfield P.S. we teach and recognize character education on a daily basis in our classrooms as well as with a monthly focus on one theme. These themes will be shared with you so that they can be supported at home!

Student Leadership Team: Students on this team were selected based on their written submission, outlining their interest in a school leadership role. We will be meeting the students on a regular basis to plan our monthly front showcase reflecting our Character Educa-tion themes, plan school spirit days and other school wide initiatives. The team met with Mrs. Lee and Mrs. Mongia and identified the following

November 11th: Our Remembrance Day assembly will take place on Nov. 11th at 10:45. Mrs. O’Dell’s class will be presenting and the choir will be perform-ing. We welcome parents to join us.

Peel board trustees ¾ accountable to the community

The Peel board, like every public school board in Ontario, is governed by a board of trustees. Trustees are elected by public school taxpayers every three years during municipal elections. The next municipal election will be held in Octo-ber 2018. The Peel board currently has 12 trustees representing three municipalities:

each new non-teaching job that is posted on the Peel board's Job Board.

Choose Action on Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week

The Peel District School Board will recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week during the week of Nov.16 to 20, 2015.

This year, we ask the Peel community to #ChooseAction to Change the World. The Peel board would like to hear about the big and small actions, the pledges, the promises and the attitudes that our Peel community value, and ask that you

take a moment to share your #ChooseAction moments on social media.

Across the Peel board, schools use many programs and initiatives to prevent bullying and to intervene when bullying

happens. Though the programs vary, their messages are consistent. Students are taught to:

define bullying

identify forms of bullying

identify the shifting roles in bullying relationships, for example the person who bullies, the target, the bystander or

the trusted advocate

determine how to safely “choose action” to prevent and intervene in bullying & harassment

understand that bullying is a relationship problem with relationship solutions

determine positive ways to interact with others in an accepting, inclusive way

demonstrate character attributes and be a leader to help maintain positive and safe school communities

Kelso’s Choice Conflict Management

This tool may be of help to remind kids of how to solve problems. We often use this tool with stu-dents at school to solve problems.

All teachers at Springfield have a copy this post-ed in their classrooms for reference when support-ing students with problem solving.

We encourage families to post this on your fridge or in a common area where students can practice these skills at home.

Regional Learning Choices Programs offered by the Peel District School Board empower students by providing them with opportunities to develop and explore skills in a particular area of interest. Regional programs are open to all students who meet the criteria for acceptance. Information nights Students and their families are encouraged to attend the information night for the program of their choice to receive more information about the program and application details. If you are unable to attend the information night, information and application details are available through the school. Busing Transportation is not provided for students in regional programs. If students have been accepted into a regional program and they live within the school boundary, they are eligible for busing only if they meet the distance criteria outlined in the board’s Transportation Policy #39. Fees All regional programs include application and annual fees. There is a $40 application fee for all regional pro-grams. Annual fees are specific to the program.

Winter bus safety The following winter school bus safety tips will help to keep your child safe throughout the winter months. Allow extra time to get to your bus stop. Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in the early morning and late evening. Stand away from where the bus stops. Buses need extra room to stop when there is snow and ice. Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping on wet or icy steps or road surfaces. Dress properly—winter clothing, hats, and boots will keep you warm. Don't throw snowballs at the bus or other children waiting for the bus. Don't slide on the snow or ice patches in driveways or on the street. Don't push or shove around the bus. Someone could fall down on the ice and get hurt. On very rare occasions, buses are late because of weather conditions or mechanical problems. Talk to your child

about what to do if the bus is late. Here are some suggestions:

When possible, wait with your child for the bus. Make sure your child knows a phone number where he can reach you or another trusted adult. Teach your child how and where to get help. Talk to your child about what a "safe"

stranger is. Help your child set up a bus stop buddy system so your child has someone to wait with for the bus.
