aving grown up in a small town in the heart of the Cascade Mountains, Alisha adopted an adventurous lifestyle at a young age. The minute she was able to travel the world, she dove in head first. After traveling during school and graduating from Western Wash-ington University with a BA in Therapeutic Recreation, she moved to Germany to support the U.S. Army with various forms of post-deploy-ment adventure-based therapy. She rock-climbed, kayaked, hiked, mountain biked, and most importantly, skied her way across the Alps and as many places in Europe that she could. She spent seasons in Utah working with at-risk youth in wilderness therapy programs, living in her car and climbing every route she could find. For four years, she taught all levels of alpine skiing in many different states and countries and spent time at a Therapeutic Boarding School in Idaho as the ad-venture education counselor. Life took her to southeast Asia where she was climbing on routes overlooking picturesque beaches, kayaking down hidden rivers and doing yoga in huts. Throughout her moves,

Here are 10 ways to green your holidays!

JBLM’s recycle centers are located by the Exchange and Commissary at Lewis Main and McChord Field. The list of recyclable items may surprise you — www.lewis-mcchord.army.mil/publicworks/sites/services/dumpsters.aspx

Are you deep-frying a turkey? Take your used cooking oil to the Lewis Main and McChord Field Recycling Center.

After the holidays, bring your tree (real or artificial) to the JBLM Recycling Centers. Please remove all tinsel, lights, and flocking. Bring in your lights, too, just make sure they’re off of the tree.

Use LED lights to decorate. They use 80-90% less energy and last so much longer!

Make a sustainable resolution: Reduce food waste, turn down your thermostat when you leave the house or take public transportation more. These aren’t just green, they’ll save you money!

Reusable bags aren’t just for groceries -- bring them with you for your holiday gift shopping.

Buy someone an experience as a gift. A massage, tickets to a play, a donation to their favorite charity in their name or movie tickets all make great gifts.

Offer your talents as a gift: banana bread, babysitting services, tax preparation, kitchen cleaning or a photography session.

Use fabric to wrap your presents. You can even use it year after year, saving money and paper! For instructions on how to make fabric wrapping paper:http://joybucket.blogspot.com/ 2008/11/wrappadappadoo- reusable-gift-wrap.html

For your holiday dinners, check out local farmers markets for your ingredients. You can often find it for cheaper than the stores. There’s nothing like a pumpkin pie made from a fresh pumpkin grown less than 30 miles away!

Buy from local, small businesses as much as possible. This helps keep money in your local community.

key spouse programSupport, connection & resources for your Air Force Family

Key Spouses are volunteer military spouses from within an

Air Force squadron and are appointed by the squadron com-

mander. They perform a vital communication role between AF

leadership and its Families. Key Spouses provide support to the

Families of military members during time of need and assist

Families in finding available base, installation and community

resources. The Key Spouse Program is an Air Force program

and all AF squadrons/units at JBLM have at least one Key

Spouse appointed.

Your unit Key Spouse is there to listen without judgment

when you need to talk. Key Spouses can connect you to com-

munity information, volunteer opportunities and referral

services. They can help your Family prepare for separation due

to deployment and other stressors. Key Spouses provide a peer-

to-peer support system for handling military life experiences.

They know what it’s like to be a military spouse and serve as a

vital link in exchanging information between unit leadership

and your Families.

Don’t know who your unit Key Spouse is or think you’d like

to become a Key Spouse? See your unit First Sergeant or com-

mander. For additional information, 253-982-2695.
