Art Association in Roxbury October Meeting and

Experimental Water Media Demonstration

The Art Association in Roxbury will be holding its next monthly meeting on Thursday, October 4th, at 7:15 PM at the Roxbury Senior Center, 72 Eyland Avenue, Succasunna, NJ. Sheila Grodsky, an award winning artist, will give a demonstration using water media. October Demo

Sheila Grodsky Sheila Grodsky’s demo gave us an introduction into abstract painting. She began by preparing a gesso base on watercolor paper using a carpenter’s spackle spreader. The gesso took texture well from the serrated spreader which scratched into the surface of the paper. Sheila then pressed crumpled tissue paper onto the wet gesso. Page 2 The Palette News OCT 2012 splashed her acrylic paint with water and tilted the paper. She also made use of an alcohol spray, then splashed her work in progress with paint to add interest to her design. She pressed bubble wrap into her work as well and rolled it down with a braier. When the paper was dry, she removed any wax residue from the waxed paper by applying detergent. Then she designed negative and positive shapes from the impressions the various papers had left. She drew with chalk, forming squares, curves, rectangles and overlapping shapes, repeating her shapes in odd numbers. Sheila used a Princeton Art #6 brush to mix green and crimson on a bar of soap. (The soap helped the paint adhere to her sketch.) Later she added more paint to her work with a one-inch Cotman WN Aquarelle. She ended her demo with a few tips: A practical one was cleaning your brushes with a 50-50 mixture of Murphy’s Oil and water. Some other tips included ending your artist’s block by taking a hike to get some oxygen into your system. She also advised playing like a child, meditating, sleeping on a problem, and not obsessing over your work since it is only paper and paint. We all applauded Sheila for a job well done. INSTRUCTIONAL SERIES/ON-GOING MENTORING SERIES.

This instructional series will address a variety of topics that

challenge all artists. The purpose of this series is to allow

artists to have the benefit of instruction by nationally known

instructor Kenn Backhaus in an affordable and manageable

manner. There will be two instructional opportunities to study

with Kenn, either as a SINGLE-DAY INSTRUCTIONAL

SERIES spanned over a couple of months period, with the

artist choosing from a number of various single-day topics. The

other opportunity would be an ON-GOING INSTRUCTIONAL

MENTORING SERIES, where the artist will sign up for at least

two consecutive single-day sessions. At the end of the first

day's session, Kenn will give a challenging assignment that the

artist will work on and bring to the next scheduled workshop

session to be reviewed, if the artist chooses to participate.

Kenn Backhaus is a Master Member in Oil Painters of America and

the American Impressionist Society, as well as a member and

past President of Plein Air Painters of America. Kenn has been

teaching nationally for over 15 years and has been the acceptance

judge and awards judge for many national shows across the

country. With his artist career beginning in the early 1970's, Kenn

brings years of experience in dealing with these challenges.Artists

have the flexibility of taking one class, several classes or the full

series.

For decades artists have practiced painting field studies

especially while on shorter painting trips. The artist only has a

certain amount of time to try to capture as much of the

experience and mood as possible. You could paint more

refined but fewer works or as many artists choose, paint to the

field study and return home with many more ideas with good

notes. As in the past artist’s used in combination with the field

study other devises to help capture and recall the scene when

November 18 - 9:00am to 4:00pm DYNAMIC

BRUSHWORK AND MASTERING EDGES WITH KENN

BACKHAUS

Two topics that are commonly overlooked by artists are

brushwork and edges. Most people view paintings from a

distance, so brushwork is not foremost in an artist’s mind;

however, brushwork is what a painting consists of. Without

brushstrokes and the use of edges there would be no form.

Some artists are inclined to make awkward small brushstrokes

that are misplaced, overwork an area to the point of muddying

colors or make the same brushstrokes over and over again.

Every brushstroke and edge should be deliberate and

meaningful. The paint application could be thick or thin, light

handed or bold reveals - with shape, value, form, texture and

color. Just as words are the language to the poet, brushwork

and edges become the language of the artist.

This workshop will define and explore the various expressions

that the artist should consider in the painting process using

brushwork to express the idea and proper edges to further

define the composition. After the demonstration and lecture the

students will paint while Kenn gives individual attention. Class

size is limited to 15 people.

Estimated Distance Seth Ellis Gallery Aferro, Main Gallery October 5, 2012 – December 15, 2012 Opening Reception Friday October 5, 6-10 PM Estimated Distance is a exhibition of recent work exploring the relationship between narrative, space, and text. Installations and objects tease out the stories inherent in maps, horoscopes, personal narration, sound effects, and non vocal exclamations. How do written stories alter with physical experience? How does the medium generate and shape the stories that get told? The stories are fragmented narratives of urban history, and personal stories of confusion, loss, and potential happiness; the objects that tell them are sometimes oblique, sometimes direct. The exhibition as a whole is in part a transformation of the gallery into a playful narrative space, and in part an exploration of the difficulties and promise of real communication between each other. • ART LOVER’S AUCTION NOVEMBER 1: • Our next meeting on November 1 will be our

AAR benefit "Art Lover's Auction". Remember this is our only fund-raiser for the club’s outreach program. Please invite family, friends, and strangers (!) for a fun and worthwhile evening. Hopefully you have been painting, creating, and gathering your donations for this event. By now you should have received the information form (“greetings mailer”) and other forms that contain the slips that need to be completed for your auction donations. As most of you know by now, there are 3 parts of the auction: the silent auction, the 50/50 live auction, and the 100% live auction. We are asking everyone to fill out the slips ahead of time and bring them in with your donations the night of the auction.

• Also don't forget that all members are asked to bring in a dish of food for our buffet dinner that we will eat during the silent auction, before the live auction begins. Finger foods are especially appreciated, but any nice buffet type food item (similar to what we have at the annual show reception) would be welcome. Edibles should arrive warmed if necessary and ready to serve. Include a serving utensil if needed.

• The night of the auction, if you are coming early to help set up, which hopefully many of you will do, plan to arrive at 5:30 pm. Other members should arrive at 6:00 with their food contribution for the buffet supper and auction donations. When you arrive, pick up a numbered paddle and sign in.Your numbered paddle is how we keep track of who has bid on and won the various auction items. We hope to be eating and browsing the silent auction by 6:30. At 7:30 the silent auction ends, and the live auction begins, led by “our own” auctioneer Dotty Fleming. The live

auction ends at 9:00. Auction items may be paid for by check made payable to the Art Association in Roxbury. Cash will be accepted, but checks are preferred for accurate record keeping. At the end please take home any auction items you brought that were not sold, plus any food dishes that you brought in. And also please help clean up at the end of the evening.

• Let’s hope for good weather this year, and let’s make this the best auction ever!

The Art Association in Roxbury will be holding its annual Art Lover’s Auction at the Roxbury Senior Center, 72 Eyland Ave., Succasunna, NJ on Thursday, November 1st. Last year’s auction had to be cancelled due to the surprise snowstorm that Mother Nature bestowed upon us. There will be many items to chose from this year. This year’s art auction will feature original works of art by local artists. This is a good chance to obtain beautiful paintings to decorate your home or as holiday gifts. AAR members will be donating both small and large paintings in all media and styles, so there should be something for everyone’s tastes. If you love art or need a gift for an art lover, this is the place to go. All proceeds will go to support the arts. This year the Art Association in Roxbury will making donations to four different organizations. Money raised will be used to fund the awards for the annual “All Media Art Show for Morris County Seniors and Persons with Disabilities” and to purchase art supplies for the students at the P.G. Chambers School in Cedar Knolls. In addition, donations will be used to further art at the Roxbury High School and the County College of Morris.

There will be a silent auction of the smaller paintings and items, followed by a live auction of the more valuable items and paintings. A light buffet meal will be served before the auction begins. Members of the Art Association in Roxbury reside in many towns in Northwest New Jersey, including towns in Morris, Sussex, Warren, and Somerset counties. Come with family and friends to have a lot of fun and support a good cause! The silent auction will begin at 6:30 pm and the live auction at 7:30 pm. Admission is free.
