Our November rally to the eastern end of NC was no exception. We had several Airstreamers who were new visitors to this region of North Carolina, and they spoke of the miles of sometimes winding road with miles of flat farming vistas broken by patches of dense, swampy forest which caused them, at times, to question the instructions on their GPS screen. We learned that these patches look very quiet from the road but are inhabited by bears, red wolves, coyotes and many other wild critters. During the spring and summer, the miles of empty fields are green with vegetables, feed grain, cotton, flowers and other crops which had been harvested for the most part and the black soil readied for next year's planting or for a cover of winter wheat. The GPS systems were right on target and guided Stedman Brown, Richard and Pat Paschall, Bob and Marge Bennett, Jerry and Billie Shelton, Don and Joyce Porter, John and Nancy Becker, Jim and Margaret Hamernick and Fred Brandt (a member of the Palmetto State SC Unit – now affiliated with our unit) to Riverside Campground near Belhaven NC just as a cold front straight from the far reaches of Alaska arrived with rain and wintery temps. The hosts had arrived a day earlier when the thermometer reading was 70 plus, but we knew what was headed our way and came prepared with warm clothing and warm food and plenty of propane. The windy, freezing front made for a nice tail wind propelling beautiful white tundra swans and other migratory fowl to Lake Mattamuskeet, our destination for Friday morning. The travelers were tired and hungry after traveling 5000 miles or more and busy looking for food at the bottom of the shallow lake or resting on the waters. Con’t to page two

President’s Report Emptying “Arlene” for her winter rest brought back memories of miles on the road headed toward interesting locations and fellowship with fun loving folks ready for a new adventure. President’s report con’t. November is the beginning of the yearly migration for the birds, and they will continue to arrive for the next several weeks as their food sources disappear under snow in their summer home. Kelly Davis, who was employed by the state as a biologist specializing in this region for several years, joined our group at the wildlife station and led us on a tour of the lake. Kelly taught us so much about birds, critters and farming in this area in our short time with her. We really appreciated her taking time away from her family and farm to enlighten us, which made our visit so much more interesting. The rain had turned to sunshine by the time we reached the Red Wolf Education Center near Columbia NC early in the afternoon. We all wished we could wear the wolf hides displayed by the young lady leading our tour which took place outside the building near the pen housing Mr. and Mrs. Wolf, who are captive with a nice warm den in which to live out their lives. Our guide, a graduate of NC State and intern with the Red Wolf Coalition Education Center, was so passionate about the survival of the endangered species and didn’t seem cold at all. She increased out knowledge of the red wolves and passed along a bit of that passion to us before we happily climbed back into our warm vehicles for the trip back to the campground. Friday evening’s Frogmore Stew whipped up by Stedman Brown ( Jo Ann’s recipe and she was in our thoughts as we enjoyed every bite) along with salad, bread, warm crock pot Apple Betty and pound cake in a nice warm room, followed by a roaring fire in the Becker fire pit, left our weary bodies ready for a good night’s sleep and a sleep-in Saturday morning. Saturday was “make your own” day: no one was out at the crack of dawn but everyone had a plan. One group headed for Swan Quarter to visit the new art center which has brought together artist from all over Hyde county and beyond to learn new arts and crafts, as well as to perfect the gifts they enjoy and share. There were many fishing and shrimp boats docked in the marina in this fishing village, and many inhabitants depend on the surrounding water for their livelihood. Another group headed over to Somerset Place, a restored plantation, where they were treated to a tour by a knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide. John and Nancy Becker had their kayaks along and were not deterred by a little cold weather from a paddle down the Pungo River. Nags Head for seafood was a day well spent for several folks and some of us visited a small museum in Belhaven which houses the many varied collections of Mrs. Blount Way, a former well-to-do resident of Belhaven. All our journeys seemed to include warm and tasty food. A few of us took in the music at the auditorium at the campground in the evening, and John and Nancy had a beautiful fire going before they gave up on us and we all called it an evening and headed for bed. Leaving Sunday after breakfast made me feel a bit sad as our rally season comes to an end. A few couples from our unit have already left for warmer winter climates; several others are on the way and there will be days when those of us who stay in NC will be a little envious. We do have one more event left to enjoy in 2014, and we all need to make an effort to attend to install the officers for the coming year in style. We delayed the planned November installation so John and Thelda could be near their granddaughter and son-in-law as they awaited the birth of a baby boy. As of this writing, they are still waiting. John and Thelda are hosting our December event at John’s Family Restaurant in Charlotte on December 6th, followed by a tour of their Christmas home in nearby Clover SC. If you did not receive their email last week with all the needed information, please let them know. Also, let them know if you are planning to attend. This luncheon will be the venue for our installation rally and we all need to be in attendance if at all

possible. There are many holiday events and interesting museums in the area, along with lots of shopping possibilities, so you might want to make it a weekend with your Airstream or on horseback. John and Thelda also have the 2015 schedule of Fun, Fellowship and Adventure ready to roll beginning with a horseback event at the Nasher Museum of Art in Durham on Valentine's Day, February 14. We’ll tour the Miró exhibit followed by lunch at a nearby brewery/restaurant. The Beckers and Chassaings are hosting this rally. After a winter break, we look forward to seeing everyone when Todd and Debbie Stroud host our first 2015 camping rally at the newly renovated Raleigh Oaks Resort and Cottages campground near Four Oaks, April 9-12. We still need a host for the ”On the Beach Rally” in October and a co-host for each of our scheduled rallies, so be thinking about where you might be able to help. Bob and Marge Bennett have unveiled the plans and route for the “Taste of North Carolina”unit caravan beginning the last of May and traveling across the state before ending June 16. It sounds like delicious fun! There is no “Business Meeting” report in this newsletter because we exercised the no-business-meeting option and had a dinner table discussion instead. We took a look at our new Automatic External Defibrillator--we hope we never need to use it. It is with me now and I’ll have it with me in Charlotte for our December luncheon. It will be traveling with the hosts or other designated person to all rallies and events. There are currently several of our members who are CPR certified. Certification is not necessary to use the AED however, because it guides each step in its use with voice instruction and is totally automatic once the electrode pads are placed. The American Red Cross and American Heart Association do offer classes and taking a class does help with confidence if called on to administer care in an emergency. One other item of discussion was the giving of memorial gifts when one of the unit’s members or a former unit member dies. We decided to continue the current procedure: If a member wants to give a gift in memory of the deceased he/she may make an individual gift in his own name or may send a check to our treasurer who will send the gift from the unit as a whole to the charity or organization designated by the family of the deceased, or of the unit’s choosing. Because we did not vote on this item, it can be revisited at a business meeting at a later date. As I write my last President’s Report and pass the duty on to John Guy (and Thelda), I do want to THANK all of our members who fleshed out our 2014 rally schedule and made it truly a season of FUN! FELLOWSHIP! and ADVENTURE! (and good food). We traveled many miles of NC roads and beyond, making new friends while enjoying great times and sharing memories with the friends we’d already made. We learned so much and made so many memories. I learned that I could step way out of my comfort zone. You have been patient with me and have kept me on track. I especially want to give my husband a big hug; he saved my laptop from destruction several time as I vowed to throw it from the roof top and he reminded me of many tasks which I might have overlooked without his guidance. SEE YOU ON DOWN THE ROAD!! Pat Paschall

===================================================================== From our Treasurer, A good "cold" time was had by all at the November rally. Thanks to Stedman Brown, Pat & Richard Paschall. The eats they provided were beyond excellent. Thanks for a good rally. The major part of the 2015 WBCCI International and Piedmont unit dues is complete. Those who send dues since my last report COLE, MARTIN, RAY, New members, BAKER,GARRETT, PERRYMAN and new associate member BRANDT. I apologize if I have forgotten anyone during the year. Once again, we had 100% collection by the deadline to have our names listed in the WBCCI Directory. I can't thank you-all enough for your prompt response and cooperation to accomplish this annual task. I don't know of any other unit who has cooperative people as you in the Piedmont unit. You have made my job so much easier. THANK YOU I Must remind those who did not renew this year, that your membership will not expire until the International rally in July. So if you wish, you can still renew your membership by sending me $80.00 and I will take care of the rests. I have mailed a memorial in the name Barbara Carter to the AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY from the Piedmont N.C. Airstream Club. Have forwarded a Copy to Jim Carter. From Billie and I, we wish everyone wonderful and happy holidays. MEMBERSHIP REPORT

We have had a growth year in unit membership and October/November is no exception. Since the last newsletter, we've added Gary and Sheri Garrett (WBCCI #5238) from Catawba, Lance and Shirley Perryman (#13456) from Cary, and Fred Brandt (#3641) of the Palmetto State SC Unit from Lyman SC as a new affiliate member of the Piedmont NC Unit. Gary and Sheri came by our campsite during the Carolina BalloonFest Rally in October and joined shortly thereafter. They were excited to see all of the Airstreams at this rally and look forward to joining us in rallies next year. They will bring vitality and new ideas to our group. Bob Bennett met Lance Perryman at the RV Show in Raleigh this fall and encouraged him to join us. Lance and Shirley moved to North Carolina from Colorado where Lance was the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins until he retired in 2012. They are anxious to participate in our camping activities in 2015 and plan to attend our December luncheon in Charlotte to meet our folks. Most recently, Fred Brandt attended our November "For the Birds Rally," driving his motor home all the way from South Carolina. Fred was on the "Watch It Made in America" caravan with Stedman Brown and wanted to join our rally since Stedman was co-hosting. Fred and his late wife Sarah have been devoted members of WBCCI and the Palmetto State SC Unit since the 1980's. Sarah passed away in February of this year and those of us who knew her, loved her for her friendliness and energy and devotion to WBCCI. We were happy when Fred told Jerry Shelton that he wanted to affiliate with our unit. We welcome him joyfully. With these new members, we have had a great year, adding Ed and Christine Baker (#5197) of Raleigh in October, Bud and Donna Moore (#5241) of Greensboro in October, Deke and Tiffani Waters (#17707) in August (transfers from the Oregon Unit), Richard and Suzanne Luke (#21475) of Pittsboro in July, Doug and Dana McLeroy (#2860) of Reidsville in July, and Todd and Debbie Stroud (#3846) in July (transfers from the Georgia Unit). We also added Al and Blaike Wagener (#1433) in February, but they decided not to renew for 2015. Although we rejoice at the new members added to our unit, we regret losing some members this year. Stanton and Sandra Cross (#7177) transferred to the Carolinas Unit but remain as affiliates of our unit. Rick and Susan Roscher (#4115) sold their trailer and truck and declined to renew for 2015. Tom and Lisa Nolan (#25109) of Greensboro have sold their trailer and will not renew for 2015.

We also sadly note the passing of three members in 2014. William Duvall had transferred from the Arizona Unit but never camped with us because of declining health. William passed away in June. Jo Ann Brown (#6693) fought a valiant fight against cancer but passed away in July after participating in our March/April unit caravan and the Region 3 Rally near Asheville. Former unit president and long-time member Barbara Carter sustained a long fight against cancer but passed away the last day of October. We never got the opportunity to meet Bill Duvall, but we have had great times with Jo Ann and Barbara and will miss these valued members of our group. We will have many more opportunities to recruit new members to WBCCI and the joys of caravanning and camping with fellow Airstreamers. Airstream is adding another line, producing new RVs at a very high rate. Every month I receive lists of new sales of Airstreams and contact all of the North Carolina purchasers to introduce them to our club. Every member of our unit is part of the membership team and can encourage folks to join us. If you see an Airstream without the red numerals, step out and meet them, introducing them to the best RV club in the world. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Richard Paschall, Membership Chairman

Hot Fruit Compote

2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
