Ahavat Yisrael – The Love of Israel

A lmost 1,000 years ago, the Spanish Hebrew poet Judah Ha Levi famously wrote “Libi

ba-mizrah, v’anokhi b’sof ma’arav” — “My heart is in the East (the Land of Israel), but I, my body, is in the furthest reaches of the West.” Our thoughts and

prayers, our hopes and our dreams, our tears and our fears, our outrage and indignation – our whole selves are with Israel. Our bodies may be in Baltimore but for many, much of the rest of us is in the East with our beloved Israel.

It is a great source of pride to the congregation that so many Chizuk Amuno members and students spend time in Israel. Particularly during the difficult times, we showed our support and love for our homeland by visiting and letting ourselves get caught up in both the dream of Israel and its daily reality. Many members of our Chizuk Amuno community took trips to Israel this past spring and summer. They were invited to join us for Shabbat lunch on Labor Day weekend to share their adventures, to discuss how to integrate their experiences once home, and to talk about how to be ambassadors for Israel.

Goldsmith Early Childhood Education Center – Bringing Together Reading and Jewish Values

Baltimore is a PJ Library community. Last year, GECEC piloted their “PJ Goes to School” program and is continuing this year. “PJ Goes to School” is a value-

based, Jewish education initiative incorporating PJ books typically related to a Jewish holiday. New books arrive in the classrooms

monthly and enhance the Jewish curriculum already being taught by our teachers. In addition to learning from the books in the classroom, students are given the opportunity to take them home on a rotating basis. The books come with an activity guide for parents so they can build on Jewish values introduced at school. Both our teachers and students look forward to our PJ Library delivery each month.

It is difficult to believe that we are already planning for our 2017 b’nei mitzvah students. Our date assignment process is going to be a little different than in previous years.

Rather than assign dates based on the calendar year, we will now assign dates according to the school year (August through June). This will enable us to create one cohort of students, mostly in the same grade, who can participate with their families in our preparation programs, training, meetings, and gatherings. During this transition year, we will assign dates for January through June of 2017 this fall and will assign dates for the 2017-18 school year in the spring.

If you have not yet received your B’nei Mitzvah introductory letter, please contact Marci Scher, mscher@chizukamuno.org or ext. 223. The letter includes a B’nei Mitzvah Application, which asks, in advance, for any dates or pairings that we should avoid.

Finally, we recognize that the finances surrounding a bar/bat mitzvah year can be significant. We will be reducing some of the expenses and spreading them out so they don’t all occur at one time.

In the time period between the assignment of a bar/bat mitzvah date and the day of the simhah, families will continue to be invited to participate in “613 & Me,” a series of programs designed to enhance the meaning of this

milestone lifecycle event. These programs include a session entitled “It’s a Date” that will explore each child’s Torah portion; a Mitzvah Fair, coming up on Sunday, November 2 at 10 a.m., to help your family be more engaged in mitzvot and acts of social justice; a special Shabbat dinner for our b’nei mitzvah families; and a special Shabbat morning service to help families become more familiar with and comfortable in our Sanctuary service.

We hope that these changes to our bar/bat mitzvah preparation program are helpful and enhance the b’nei mitzvah experiences for our families.

Attention 2017 B’nei Mitzvah Families: Note Important Changes

Reflecting on Israelby Stephani Braverman

Having visited Israel for the first time this summer with my husband and two sons, the recent High Holy Days took on new meaning for

me. Much in the same way the sound of the shofar is familiar to me yet also somewhat unexpected each time I hear it, on some level I had an expectation of what Israel would be like. However, I was completely surprised by the intensity with which I experienced every part of our visit, and for that, I feel tremendously grateful.Our trip was inspired by our son, Alec. His desire was to become a bar mitzvah – again – in Israel; so our itinerary was

happily planned around this joyous occasion. The Old City, Yad Vashem, the Golan Heights and the beaches of Tel Aviv were all destinations I could not wait to enjoy. Little did I realize that I would be completely overwhelmed with emotion, not only as we stood atop Masada for the sunrise ceremony, but every day thereafter, whether planting trees, doing a mitzvah project at the Jaffa Institute, celebrating Shabbat at the Kotel, or enjoying the Jewish and Arab markets with every one of my senses. The connection was truly palpable.

Sitting in shul in recent weeks, I found

myself reflecting on the many memorable details of our trip. In particular, we visited a gallery of mystical art in Tzfat. The artist had been experimenting with digitized images of sound waves made by the shofar. I was fascinated by the technique and resulting works of art; they were linear and colorful. When we returned home, I really began to think about

the power of those images. For me, they are a visual reminder of the significance of the High Holy Days that will remain with me year round and one of the many intangible gifts from Israel my family and I will cherish forever.

New! Wanted: Creative, Caring VolunteersPediatric Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital is looking for creative, caring individuals to help in the outpatient playroom. Volunteers read books, set up arts and crafts, and play games with children who come in for check-ups or treatments. These are children who look good, feel good, and just want to play! Children with cancer come to Hopkins from all over the region and the world. Volunteers undergo screening and training at the hospital and are expected, in general, to commit to a weekly 4-hour shift. Parking is provided. This is a unique opportunity for individuals who want to experience the joy that comes from making a difference in a child’s life. Enjoying Good Times with BrotherhoodBrotherhood’s year got off to a great start with our opening meeting and BBQ, which drew a large, enthusiastic, and hungry crowd. During the first week of October, members of Brotherhood assembled nearly 120 lulav and etrog sets that had been ordered by members of our community and distributed sukkot that had been purchased by congregants. We held our bi-monthly blood drive and during the last week of October, Chizuk Amuno Brotherhood hosted the Jewish version of “It’s Academic,” sponsored by the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs. Teams from several shuls from the Mid-Atlantic region competed in the contest. Our fall events exemplify

Brotherhood’s social, educational, and service aspects of its mission as an auxiliary organization of Chizuk Amuno.

Coming up – we’ll enjoy our Sunday minyan and breakfast program on November 9 at 9:15 a.m. featuring “Jewish Genealogy-Raiders of the Lost Ancestor,” presented by Richard Goldman, noted author and scholar. Our Bowling Night will take place on Saturday, November 22 at 6:30 p.m.

Stop by at our Ravens Tailgate Party on Sunday, December 7, which will take place shortly after our Adopt-A-Road project. Our blood drive will take place on Monday, December 22 and our annual Movie Night will be on Thursday, December 25. Watch for details.

Zaiman. As each of its compartments is opened another Jewish ritual object is discovered. This table was inspired by David Moss and created with the collaboration of Noah Greenberg.
