Most Beautiful Explanation of Death I've ever heard ~DEATH~ WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO EXPLAIN IT. A sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to leave the examination room and said, 'Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side.' Very quietly, the doctor said, 'I don't know.' 'You don't know? You're, a Christian man, and don't know what's on the other side?' The doctor was holding the handle of the door; On the other side came a sound of scratching and whining, And as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room And leaped on him with an eager show of gladness. Turning to the patient, the doctor said, 'Did you notice my dog? He's never been in this room before. He didn't know what was inside. He knew nothing except that his master was here, And when the door opened, he sprang in without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death, But I do know one thing... I know my Master is there and that is enough.’ Submitted by: Sandy Maddux

Scotties Needed! New TCC Screening Study at Purdue

Marcia Dawson, DVM, Chairman HTF

For those who have never known a Scottie afflicted with bladder cancer, you can count yourself fortunate. In a breed estimated to be 16-20 times more at risk for Transitional Cell Carcinoma (TCC) than other breeds, any effort to tackle the disease is indeed welcome news. Now, with the STCA’s endorsement and approval of the Health Trust funding for a new screening study to be conducted by Dr. Debbie Knapp at Purdue University, the news could not be better. Dr. Knapp is already well known to Scottie owners and the STCA for her tenacious, long-term research and clinical trials on TCC, a cancer that far too many of us have experienced in our dogs. Thirteen years ago, she and Dr. Larry Glickman conducted the first epidemiological study to characterize this disease in Scotties. Six years later, Dr. Knapp joined forces with Dr. Elaine Ostrander at the NIH to research the genetics of TCC in Scotties and other high-risk breeds, a project of major significance that is still underway. And now, in her study entitled Screening and Early Intervention to

Positively Transform the Management of Urinary Bladder Cancer in Scottish

Terriers, Dr. Knapp plans to follow a population of 100 Scottish Terriers over a 3-year period with twice-a-year screenings. The ultimate goal of this new study is the development of a successful and routine screening protocol for Scotties and other high-risk breeds, leading to early intervention when needed, using a relatively low risk medication. This protocol may ultimately save the lives of thousands of dogs, while avoiding the side effects from traditional cancer treatment and helping to lower health care costs for the owners. The screenings will consist of a physical exam, ultrasound of the bladder, urine collection by free-catch for specialized urine assays and urinalysis, blood collection, and paperwork to be filled out by the owners. The screenings will take place year-round at Purdue University Veterinary Hospital and also in the fall and spring at two off-campus locations: Louisville, KY and Springfield, IL. There will be no cost to the Scottie owners for the screenings. If abnormal lesions are discovered in the screening, follow-up diagnostic work will be offered at Purdue, also at no cost to the owner. Dr. Knapp’s new study is an innovative approach in veterinary medicine in that it focuses on the prevention, early detection and early intervention of TCC in Scotties.

In human medicine, we know that routine screenings and early diagnosis of disease can result in more successful treatment outcomes. But this is not a typical course of action in veterinary medicine. Too often the diagnosis of TCC in Scotties is made too late, when the cancer is too advanced and often has already spread to other areas, making treatment much less effective. Dr. Knapp is taking a proactive approach in that she wants to screen apparently healthy dogs starting at the minimum age of 7 years and then follow these dogs carefully over 3 years. This will allow Dr. Knapp and her team to detect the earliest, pre-cancerous changes in the bladder wall, even before there are any symptoms in the Scottie. If abnormalities are found on screening and a diagnosis of TCC is then confirmed, Dr. Knapp will be able to intervene earlier than ever before with Deramaxx®, a drug similar to piroxicam. It is expected that this early intervention with a pill taken every day will result in regression or long-term control of the disease in the majority of affected Scotties. In the ultimate analysis, the success of this important study can be achieved only through the participation of Scottie owners. If you have a healthy Scottie 7 years of age or older, and if you are willing to take your Scottie to Purdue or the other two sites, twice a year for free screenings, then please contact Patty Bonney at this email: [email protected]. Recruitment is underway right now! There are several STCGD members who are already participating in this important study, and they are leading the way for the rest of us! For those unable to participate, and for all Scottie owners who understand the ravages of this disease, please consider contributing to the STCA Health Trust Fund for this cause, in memory of so many beautiful dogs that we have lost and for the future of so many Scotties to come. Marcia Dawson DVM ©2014 Chairman, STCA Health Trust Fund [email protected] Special thanks to Lee Conner who wrote this article below for Dog World (UK) about the Scottish Terrier. It was about the debate regarding the 'types' of Scottie over 100 years ago but interestingly is still being discussed today in many breeds. Thanks Lee, for allowing me to share. Elayne Snell.

SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE… Created: 22/08/2014

It’s always fascinating reading past debates (often furious and intense but always passionate) in the canine press; many times they seem to prove the old proverb, ‘the more things change, the more they stay the same!’

Again and again we find the same grumblings over preferred colours, arguments over whether show winners could do a ‘day’s work’ and the same old moans about the dogs that are put up and the competency of certain judges.

This particular exchange about the ‘Scotch Terrier’ certainly made me smile.

Obviously matters were eventually settled leaving us with the very recognizable Scottish terrier of today. I’ve used photographs of big winners from the 1920/30’s to illustrate this piece.

Nov. 13, 1874

‘The Show Scotch Terrier’ Allow a little space for another ‘cry out of the depths’ with reference to the shows of the present day. No blatant personalities against judges or secretaries – no trenchant sarcasm at rival breeders – this time only the feeble uplifting of a ‘small voice’ in disapproval of one little particularity of modern dog shows.

The Scottish Terrier class is filled with specimens of a merely ornamental breed of dogs. Handsome, silk coated lap dogs lie in luxurious repose on damask cushions in elegant glass cases, and proclaim to a gaping crowd of admirers that they are the representatives of the Terrier of Scotland. Snapping like aristocrats they sit, with about as much courage in their nature as an outraged mouse, as much beauty in their form as an Angora cat, as much sense in their brain as an intelligent toad: and scores of noble animals with pure, well-seasoned blood in their veins, who will kill rat, cat, or badger, be companions to their master, and to follow him to the end, are left out in the cold to take their luck and become a mongrel breed.

‘Stonehenge’ describes such a dog as this: but the number grows smaller and

smaller every year, and every year the upholsterers do better and better in the glass-case line.

Sir, a small voice appeals to you. Should these things be? Might not these shining ‘baubles,’ who are certainly worth some place in a show, have a class assigned them among the lap dogs, and the Scotch terrier class be left open for better breeds, which it would be the means of improving or establishing?

A new class would be wanted, that is all. Call it ‘Yorkshire Blue Tan’ or ‘Dundreary’ or anything, but in the name of all the saints of ‘Cynophilophy’ let the present anomaly be removed from the manger it so exclusively occupies, and a worthier and better than he be installed therein.

Agreeing with these criticisms came this reply the following month:

‘The Show Scotch Terrier’

I am glad to observe from a perusal of your columns, that public attention is being directed to this useful and highly intelligent member of the canine family, but one which at present time receives too little consideration, as far as dog shows are concerned. These exhibitions were instituted with a view to encourage an improvement in the breed of dogs, for which laudable purpose large sums of money have been subscribed and liberally expended in prizes; but the results obtained so far cannot be regarded as satisfactory, and one reason why greater progress has not been made in the desired direction is, in my humble opinion, that hitherto far too little importance has been

attached to the appointment of competent and reliable judges.

Owners of pure bred dogs regard the choice of experienced judges as the first consideration, without which in fact prize winning at dog shows is all a ‘sham’.

However, to return to my original topic, and speaking from many years of experience of the terriers of Scotland, including the Skye, Dandie Dinmont, and Scotch Terrier proper, I fail to notice any marked resemblance between either of these classes and the silky coated, leggy, delicate-looking animal exhibited in England under the name Scotch Terrier.

The genuine article I should describe as a vermin dog, and therefore of a hardy nature, nearly as long in the body as a Skye, but not quite so low in the leg, the coat rather short, hard and straight, usually of a reddish yellow colour, or iron grey, but never light blue or silver. The head should be moderate in size, jaws powerful, ears less than the Dandie, often hanging, but sometimes partially erect, with the tips drooping. Weight from 12-18lb. The term terrier is derived from ‘terra’ signifying the earth, and such a term is peculiarly appropriate to the genuine Scotch Terrier, the breed being

Page 13: November 2014 Edition Editor: Elayne Snell · Our sincere condolences go out to Buffy's family and friends. STCGD would like to send out special condolences to Jeff Underwood and

admirably formed by nature for underground work, and dogs of this class do not believe their appearance, as they go to earth freely.

The so-called Scotch Terrier exhibited in England I have no wish to disparage, because of the light bones and long spider-like legs which distinguish the breed, but as a lover of ‘fair play and no favour’ I protest, and that most strongly, against their receiving honours under false colours.

Happy Tails Short Stories – Inspirational

Mac: A Sweet Spirit – Chapter 15 Bo was eleven years old when we started thinking about getting another dog. We had always had two at a time until Bo entered our lives, but he was so love-starved we kept putting it off. “It wouldn’t be fair to Bo,” we said. Every time that conversation came up, we tabled the issue – until Christi, Bo’s foster mom, emailed us about Mac. She said, “English Springer Spaniel Rescue in Atlanta just took in another Springer. He has a sweet spirit, and they wondered if you were ready for another one. Isn’t it amazing how God works? He’d already prepared out hearts through many conversations about getting another dog, and now He had not only prepared the right dog, but the right people to make the connection. He worked all things for our good, the dog’s good, and the good of the rescue people. Isn’t God good! So while Bo was the answer to our prayers, we were about to become the answer to someone else’s prayers for Mac. We emailed Christi that we would think about it and asked how he wound up as a rescue. She said his early years were unknown, but Mac was found lying beside a busy street in Atlanta with a debilitating hip injury from being hit by a car. A compassionate lady, who recognized him as a Springer and knew a friend involved in English Springer Spaniel Rescue, saw him and took him to her vet. With his hip socket repaired, he was placed in a foster home while his hip healed and a massive search for his owner continued. After six weeks with no coming forward, we were contacted, and we soon made arrangements to meet Mac. With boundless energy and ears flying, Mac ran to greet us from deep in the backyard. He came to a screeching halt at our feet. Then he turned his attention to Bo while Earl and I watched him. Unlike Bo’s perfectly chiseled, block forehead, and square muzzle, Mac’s head was pointy as his thin muzzle. And in stark contrast to Bo’s small, stocky, athletic build, Mac stood a full hand taller and all out of proportion with small shoulders and a big rear end. As far as his looks went, the only attribute we didn’t object to was his chocolate and white coat, even though Bo was black and white. “He’s not the handsomest dog in the lot.” I said, realizing how shallow I sounded as I recalled that the Lord looks at the heart. We had just about decided that Mac wasn’t right for us when he turned, walked over to my husband sitting on a bench, and kissed him. “Okay, this one’s my dog.” Earl said. With one heart in his favor, I decided to give Mac a second look while he ran over to play with Bo. When Bo ignored him, Mac jumped on him. Bo growled and snapped, but Mac jumped back without retaliating then ran a big circle around Bo and bumped him again as he buzzed by. Bo snapped and growled again, but Mac didn’t fight back. Then it happened a third time with no fight resulting.

“That’s a positive. At least he’s not a fighter. Come here, Mac,” I called. As I cupped his muzzle in my hands, I noticed a skin tag on his left lower lid. Not a problem either, I thought, but I left undecided. When Mac reinjured his hip and needed another surgery to repair it, his recovery gave us six more weeks to think about him. I admitted that I was impressed by Mac’s sweet spirit, so we arranged another visit. Our second visit was like the first. Mac tried to get Bo to play with him, Bo snapped and growled, and Mac jumped back without retaliating. His playfulness without aggression was a huge plus in his favor, so I knelt and called him to me. He came immediately, sat down in front of me, and looked me squarely in the eye. “Mac, do you want to go home with us?” I don’t know what I expected in response, but when Mac bowed his head and leaned against my leg, my heart pumped in his favor, too. I put my arm around his shoulders and called Bo to me. His response would be the final test. Bo walked over and sat down beside Mac. I couldn’t believe it. There they sat—two males side by side, neither vying for attention, nor trying to push the other one out. So with Bo’s approval, Mac became a member of our family. Linda Hultin Winn And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those

who are the called according to His purpose.

Thanks so much for allowing us to adopt Toby- we call him Teddy - he is a joy.

Barney is much more playful and they get along great. We learned 2 weeks ago that along with Amanda's numerous health issues, she is now in renal failure. She has also been more playful with Teddy.

Wishing every Scottie a loving forever home! Aroooo!
