When: Sat, November 29

Details: First Light at this pioneer village is one to behold. 5000 candles are lit around the village leading you through to discover different aspects of one the earliest settlements in Ontario, dating back to the 1600’s. See how the early settlers interacted with the local Native American tribes.

Each building has activities for the kids, but you can be a kid at heart and get in on the fun. Come away with quick handmade tree ornaments. There is a cafeteria, bar and live music. Bring Tri-pods. Challenge yourself by leaving your flash at home. Use available light. Put your camera com-

Summer Weekend on Pelee Island! Oh, the allure of it…..summer home of Margaret Atwood, the Lake Erie waters, the center of world-renowned bird watching, the verdant forests and green vineyards, quaint buildings, and the Pelee

Island Winery! And to think of spending a couple of days, shooting, shooting, and shooting! Our “Group of 7” just couldn’t wait!

Getting there, we didn’t want to rush, so we left Toronto a day early….dislike taking the major highways so took Highway 3….lots of time to catch the ferry to the island and get checked into

our Bed & Breakfast.….plenty of time for sure!…..driving, looking, stopping, shooting ……birds on hydro lines, abandoned old homesteads, fields, ponds, oil rigs…gosh, who knew about oil so close to home!….whoops, damn!...missed the ferry…told we’d be on “standby” for the following day.

Checked into a lovely hotel in Kingsville for overnight, hoping to get a spot on the first sailing in the morning. Fingers crossed. And another surprise…..who would have guessed there were so many

Mexicans on bicycles in Kingsville…these were seasonal workers hired for fruit farms and greenhouses. There were Mexican res-taurants and signage on various buildings.

There was no shortage of interests as we went all ‘round the is-

land, attending a yard sale at the Legion, sampling fare at both local restaurants, as well as the winery. We noticed an interesting sign: “WARNING - No Hunting – School Zone”. Perhaps the “most

-photographed” was this little guy who patiently posed for all of us!

No one told us about the other wildlife….snakes! We spotted 14 black ones all wound up together near the lighthouse and a huge black and yellow one alongside the road as I knelt a few feet

away, lining up a shot of a heron just beyond! The staff at the Visitor Center, looking at the pho-to, judged it to be about 7 feet in length. OMG! Then there was another one the same slithering up a tree, and then, a final send-off….a water snake swimming alongside the ferry as we left the

island.

All in all it was a great weekend – the location, the accommodation, weather, the BBQ and other eats, the company, and the endless possibilities for great photos! A couple of weeks afterwards we got together at Sarah’s to look at the photos, each of us submitting our favorites from our per-

sonal collection. With 70 to choose from, the following 4 received the highest ratings from the group.

1. Allan’s photo for Sarah came 1st

2. Joy’s Heavenly Power came 2nd

3. Allan’s, Bob’s Hole, came 3rd

4. Claudia’s Birdhouses, came 4th

Great trip – let’s do it again next year!

FALL EXCURSION TO KILLARNEY

The BPC sent a vanful of keen photographers to Killarney for Thanksgiving weekend. We

enjoyed the rustic cottage setting, misty views at dawn, lighthouse at dusk, trails in the sunshine, and an environment that en-

thralled the Group of Seven. Among the weekend highlights: grilling

breakfast & supper (Jeniffer) on the porch overlooking Lake Tyson; rescuing an old cast-iron skillet (Chris); reconnecting with

Maureen’s Killarney relatives; sending two more BPC members up the challenging ‘Crack’ trail (Chris and Catherine) for spectacular views of gray rock, water, bright vegetation;

playing gruelling card games on popular culture; and, for once, drinking the entire water cube brought along! Returning, we visited harvest in the Holland Marsh at Chris’ family farm.

You will see our images in social media, this newsletter, and in exhibits. No surprise, Killarney shines as a BPC destination for all seasons!

Iceland In Winter

When a friend and fellow photographer called last fall to ask whether or not I would be interested in joining him in Iceland at the end of January 2014 my first reaction was “Really?” After being re-

assured that it couldn’t be any colder than winter in Canada and finding an incredible deal on Ice-land Air we were off to Iceland. The initial reason for going to Iceland was to capture the blue ice and auroras. And along the way there are many other places to satisfy the itchy shutter finger.

Iceland is called the land of waterfalls – there are 1,100 of them on the island.

Four photographers left on January 27 on Iceland Air ($450.00 return). This was a self directed tour as two of the four had been to Iceland previously in the summertime. Each vowed to return to capture more of the blue ice in winter.

Armed with a GPS and Iphone apps (Aurora watch, TPE) we headed out along the south ring road

after landing in Reykjavik. It should be noted that there are two Blue Lagoons in Iceland. One is the world famous spa, where for the most part, photos aren’t allowed and the other is where the blue ice breaks off the glaciers and flows into the ocean. Although we did visit the spa near the

end of our trip we were there for the glacier blue ice in Jökulsárlón. Its about a 350 km trip from Reykjavik to Jökulsárlón and we stopped in Vik along the way (2 days). We could have stayed longer as there is no shortage of landscape – we joked that the landscape changed every 10km so

you never run out of places to shoot.

Reaching Jökulsárlón on day 3 was something I had never experienced before. Blue Ice falls off the glaciers and floats to the ocean. Along the ocean beach there are 1000’s of pieces of blue ice. Deep blue, light blue and all hues in between. Some chunks of ice are 50 feet across and are like

small icebergs. Once in the ocean near the beach the waves crash against them and create incred-ible photographic opportunities. We spent 3 days here and could have been there a month. Each day was different light and different formations. It was very windy next to the ocean and it was

also pretty wet at times so we took a lot of care with the camera gear but it did not stop us at all and each day we were out from dawn to sunset.

We then headed to Selfloss to photograph auroras. Of course you are at the mercy of the weather and cloud cover. We needed to be persistent. Of the total of 10 days that we were in Iceland we

had only 3 nights with clear enough weather and a strong enough aurora indication in which to photograph. And we were successful.

I have only hit the highlights of this amazing trip to Iceland and there are many other places and stories that could be told. Icelandic horses, waterfalls, mountains, volcanic rock and 100

foot crashing waves were all part of our Icelandic journey. One of the “perks” of photo-graphing in Iceland in the winter is that dawn light is at about 9:30 AM and sunset is about 4:30 PM so leisurely breakfasts and relaxing dinners were a bonus part of the trip. As for the

weather – it was warmer than in Canada with an average of minus 5 at night and plus 5 in the daytime - we took Arctic gear and hardly used it. But it was wet and it was windy – so much so that there was a winter hurricane off the coast while we were there. I never

thought that I would go to Iceland – now I want to go back.

The 4th BPC Scavenger Hunt is underway. Deadline for submissions is January 8th or earlier.

Submitted photos will be compiled into a slide show which will be presented at the Members Night

on January 22nd, 2015. If you don’t want to have your name or photos as part of the presentation for Members night please let me know.

The list in the form (sent out separately or you can contact Sarah directly) consists of pieces of lyr-ics from artists and their songs that can be translated into photography. It’s up to you to interpret what your vision of these lyrics is. Perhaps You Tubing any of the listed songs will help to get the

creative juices flowing. From the list of songs, you may choose a minimum of 5, maximum of all of them. No cheating! I can see the date on which the photo was taken in your exsif data from your camera. Please resize to 1024 on the longest side.

Portrait Exhibition at the new

Dylan Ellis Gallery, with printing ser-

vices by Bob Carnie, conveniently

located on the Danforth between

Coxwell and Woodbine.

A portrait is not a likeness, Richard

Avedon had said, “The moment an

emotion or fact is transformed into

a photograph it is no longer a fact

but an opinion”.

Photographing portraits is as much

about the photographer as it is

about the sitter. It’s a spontaneous

collaboration, an emotional experi-

ence.

This exhibition is by six diverse pho-

tographers: Nigel Dickson, David

Hunsberger, Russell Monk, Mark

Nowaczynski, Jesper Sorensen, and

Barrie Wentzell who have created

subtle, yet powerful eloquent imag-

es.

They each have a unique approach

in making photographs, what they

have in common is their compas-

sion, empathy and fascination with

their subject.

On Now: Stephen Bulger Gallery: Larry Towell Exhibit, Afghanistan,

October 25 - November 22, 2014 bulgergallery.com

I took the opportunity to visit the Stephen Bulger Gallery on Queen west to see the new Larry Towell

exhibit. I heard a radio interview with him on the weekend and was intrigued. As our members may

know he is an award winning photographer from southern Ontario who has spent much of his career

photographing and reporting on conflict and war torn locales. This exhibit is a powerful and moving

collection of his time in Afghanistan and is really represented comprehensively in his new book of

photos and comments "Afghanistan" which I spent time looking at on my visit (there were just a few

photos on the walls). It struck me that in spite of the difficult history in that part of the world he

managed to capture the strength and determination of the people in these photos. The book launch is

Nov 1 so may be of interest to some of our members. Did you know he is also a musician?
