PRESIDENT'S REPORT - November 2012
With the completion of November's meeting, the Club's photographic calendar year comes to a close, while the
Christmas break-up was our final activity for the year. I hope that all who attended enjoyed the Christmas lunch.
Thanks to John for organisation.
Congratulations to all the winners announced on Sunday - to Paul, Peter, Tony, Bob and Cliff as winners of the
various DPI sections and to Bob as PHOTOGRAPHER of the YEAR. (Where are the ladies in all this?) As a result
of these placings, Paul will move up to ‘AB’ Grade next year and Peter and Tony to’ A’ Grade.
The organisation of our bi-monthly competition and the Photo of the Year have been down to Shirley over the past
few years and we thank her for undertaking this task. She has also suggested introducing a Ladies v. Men's
competition, also to be presented at next year's break-up. Bring it on, I say!
A few changes to next year's Critique competition were announced at November's meeting which are worth
repeating:
1. Grades to be A, AB and B.
2. Movement up and down in these grades to be based on an objective system still to be finalised and resultant
scores to be projected with the images at the meeting.
3. Six entries in Subject with 10 entries in total throughout the year will be needed for grading consideration.
4. All images to be judged on an equal basis, i.e. judge will not know the grading of an entrant.
The draw for next year's supper roster has been made and Bob is advising those who were 'chosen' of their allocated
month.
All the best for the Christmas and New Year period and remember, if you don't receive that top of the range camera
or lens in your stocking from Santa, there is always next year.

Photoshop Tip -When you’re using the Photoshop Filter Gallery, make a backup copy of your image or create a
duplicate layer before you apply filters. Filters change the pixels of an image permanently, and when you exit the
Filter Gallery, the filters you apply can’t be removed.

Club Business: - The meeting commenced at 7.00 pm with Ian welcoming all present.
The Christmas Party is to be held on Sunday 2nd December from 11am at the Beaudesert Golf Club.
Club Hats and Shirts will arrive early in the New Year.
A draw was made for the 2013 Supper Roster, with one member chosen for each meeting.
Ian advised members of the changes made to the Club’s critique rules. Details will be included in the next Club
Newsletter
Paul Armytage has offered to organize an informal nature shoot at Carneys Creek, near Boonah on 8th December.
Interested individuals should liaise with Paul.
Another Club shoot at Mount Tamborine has been suggested for January.
Shirley Baldwin gave notice of a possible weekend away with Stanthorpe Camera Club, including access to a
winery for a shoot. This is to be finalized.
January 2013 Critique entries are due by 6th January.
Critique:- The Judge for this month’s Critique was Fran Cross from Hervey Bay. She judged the entries, and
forwarded her comments and score for Shirley to present at the meeting. This different approach was well received
by members, who had the opportunity to offer their own comments as well. This was an interesting lead-up to the
proposed internal judging at the August 2013 meeting.
Following a Christmas themed supper prepared by Ailsa and Bill Corlett, the meeting resumed with some slide
presentations.
Ian and Rosemary Hinrichsen had recently returned from a short holiday at Lord Howe Island. They presented a
really interesting selection of their images, which not only served as a travelogue, but also included many artistic
views of the island and its attractions.
This was followed by a presentation of selected images from the recent ‘Black Box’ workshop held at Malcolm and
Shirley’s house.
Paul Armytage then showed a short group of Wedding photos that he has recently made. These were very well
received.
The meeting closed at 9.20 pm.
The next General Meeting will be held at the Arts and Information Centre on Tuesday 22 January 2013.

Pixels Each pixel in the image has a numerical value of between 0 and 255 and is made up of three colour channels. So for
example a pixel could be 37-red, 76-green and 125-blue.
Computer savvy shooters will note that each colour in this scheme can be represented by an 8-bit number (byte), so
the colour of each pixel is defined by three colour bytes. This scheme can be expanded, for example to use 16-bits
(two 8-bit bytes) for each colour. Images using three 8-bit values are sometimes called 24-bit colour images etc.
Digital Art. If you have not put an entry into the Digital Art section before. Here are some ideas that may help.
Digital Art is an extension of conventional photography. Its purpose being to stimulate creative thoughts and
encourage experimentation with new ideas.
The original photo may or may not have a high degree of recognizable manipulation.
