All of these changescan make alcohol use a problem forolder adults. The National Survey on Drug Use

Alcohol and MedicinesMany older adults take medicines,

including prescription drugs, over-the-counter (non-prescription) drugs, andherbal remedies. Drinking alcohol cancause certain medicines to not workproperly and other medicines tobecome more dangerous or evendeadly. Mixing alcohol and somemedicines can cause sleepiness, confusion, or lack of coordination, which may lead to accidents andinjuries. It also may cause nausea, vomiting, headaches, and other moreserious health problems.

Some Medicines and AlcoholDon’t MixDozens of medicines interact with

alcohol and can be harmful. Here aresome examples.• Taking aspirin or arthritismedications and drinking alcoholcan increase the risk of bleeding inthe stomach.

• Taking the painkiller acetaminophenand drinking alcohol can increasethe chances of liver damage.

• Cold and allergy medicines thatcontain antihistamines often makespeople sleepy. Drinking alcohol canmake this drowsiness worse andimpair coordination.

• Drinking alcohol and taking some

medicines that aid sleep, reducepain, or relieve anxiety or depressioncan cause a range of problems, including sleepiness and poorcoordination as well as difficultybreathing, rapid heartbeat andmemory problems.

• Drinking alcohol and takingmedications for high blood pressure, diabetes, ulcers, gout, and heartfailure can make those conditionsworse.Medications stay in the body for at

least several hours. So, there can stillbe a problem if you drink alcoholhours after taking a pill. Read thelabels on all medications and followthe directions. Some medication labelswarn people not to drink alcoholwhen taking the medicine. Ask adoctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare provider whether it’s okay todrink alcohol while taking a certainmedicine.

BerkeleySprings,

a fountainhead ofwarm mineralwaters frequentedby NativeAmericans longbefore Europeansarrived in the NewWorld, are at theheart of amountain spa community in WestVirginia’s Eastern Panhandle. Firstnoted as Medicine Springs in 1747on a map drawn by ThomasJefferson’s father, the waters formany centuries have drawn visitorsseeking health and relief from thestress of everyday life.

In 1776, George Washington’s family and friends drew up a plat of134 lots, named the streets, andincorporated The Town of Bath, invoking the muses of the renowned English spa. Yet the magic of thesprings prevailed, and the town andsurrounding area are known by theirname – Berkeley Springs.

The waters flow at a constant 74°Ffrom the base of Warm SpringsRidge. You may still drink freely andfill your jugs at Lord Fairfax’s publictap, and wade in the ancient stonepools in the nation’s smallest statepark. The town has endured cyclesof notoriety, fashion, war andmodern progress, but remains the Country’s First Spa, a quiet, friendlyhaven surrounded by West Virginia’ssplendid outdoors. ß

HH edgesville is located in Skinner’s Gap on North Mountain, where the original Warm Springs Road (now WV9) passed

through from Alexandria, Virginia to Bath (Berkeley Springs). Anabundant spring drew the first settler and today serves as Town

Spring marked by a protective structure. The spring is reportedly never affected bydrought and the water is a persistent 57 degrees.

In 1738, the Hedges family began to acquire land just east of the gap. During theFrench and Indian War in the 1750s, George Washington supervised the construction ofa stockade fort in the gap called Fort Hedges. It was one of a string of forts constructedfor protection against the French and their Indian allies.

The town was laid out in 1832 andestablished as Hedgesville by the VirginiaGeneral Assembly in 1836. At that time, alaw was passed making it unlawful to “sit or loiter about Town Spring drinkingspirits.” The town was finally incorporatedin 1854 and in 1870 the Town Council wasgiven control of the springs.

A number of antebellum historicstructures still line the village streets, including many original log homes. Thevillage is listed in the National Register ofHistoric Places.
