We still have some openings in the many outstanding courses offered through the fall ASU Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Register at the Member Services Desk in the Sage Center and ask about the Student Discount Package to save 20%.
Our Fall Program is off to a fantastic start and we are happy to welcome a new ASU Faculty Associate, Dr. Keith Rieger, who is offering a course on iPads, iPhones and other hand-held communication devices.
Other excellent faculty include Hugh Renfro, the former head of the Arabian Chevron Oil Company who will discuss his experiences living and doing business in the Arab Kingdom.
Festival Community residents Doug Chatem, Jean-Marie Givens-Myers, John Hamilton, and Sandy Tracy join
our Community Scholar ranks.
Since the future of Festival’s ASU Osher Lifelong Learning Program depends upon our community continuing to increase its cadre of volunteer resident instructors, why not join their ranks and register for Dr. George Jeffers’ free course to learn how to become a Community Scholar?
Become an OLLI Member! There are many benefits to becoming an OLLI Member such as discounts to ASU educational events, discounted tickets to arts and performance ven-ues, educational travel opportuni-ties, and others such as Ning. Jeni Billingsley and her husband Jake recently moved to Sun City Festival from their home in Hideaway, Texas. Jeni, with a Masters Degree in Counseling, retired from her position as a counselor and play therapist from Legal Services of North Texas. She became a counselor hoping to talk some sense into her adventuresome husband Jake. Jeni was born in San Antonio, went to high school in Killeen, and lived in such interesting places as Japan while growing up in a military family. Jake and Jeni have five children and nine grand children.
Jake is as comfortable in boardrooms of banks and large corporations as he is in
the wilderness. From developing real estate in the Dallas metroplex to hunting Grizzly Bear in Siberia with a bow; from serving as president or senior officer of commercial real estate corporations to guiding big game hunters in the Weminuche Wilderness of southwest Colorado, it seems Jake, an Eagle Scout, is always looking for his next adventure. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A & M and is an author and motivational speaker. He played Sheriff Jimmy in a movie called After Sundown, and has appeared on numerous television shows including The Tonight Show with David Letterman and appeared in numerous television commercials. He is best known, however, for being the most popular (and oldest) contestant on the People’s Choice award winning television show Survivor Thailand.
“Jake brought me to Arizona kicking and screaming,” said Jeni. I told him “There is nothing out there but rocks and snakes. Boy was I wrong. The resort atmosphere and genuine people won me over. I love it here!”
The Myths Of Exercise
News
We are constantly bombarded with information about the best way to exercise. How do we know what is fact and what is fiction? Continue reading and have some of the myths busted.
MUSCLE TURNS INTO FAT Muscle and fat are completely different types of tissue and have totally different functions. One type of tissue cannot turn into another type. When consistent exercise stops, muscle tissue will atrophy (get smaller in size). Calorie burning decreases and fat storage increases causing fat cells to get larger.
STRETCH PRIOR TO EXERCISE Traditionally, people believed stretching functioned as a warm-up and prevented injuries. Recent research pub-lished in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine showed stretching prior to exercise did not prevent injury. Stretching is most beneficial and safest when done after five to ten minutes of light activity (warm up) AND after exercise is completed.
LIFTING HEAVY WEIGHTS WILL MAKE WOMEN GET BULKY Women don’t have enough of the muscle-building hormone testosterone to get bulky. Regular strength straining is still very important to maintain age-related strength and muscle loss and to maintain bone density. In addition, strength training helps boost metabolism and improve the hormonal pro-file.
CALORIE READOUT ON EQUIPMENT IS ACCURATE Research has shown that calorie burn listed on some exercise equipment can be off by as much as 70 percent. Treadmills and stationary bikes tend to have more accurate calorie readouts than elliptical machines and other equipment. To get the most accurate reading for a particular machine, enter age, weight and gender.
ABDOMINAL EXERCISES REDUCE ABDOMINAL FAT This is the myth of spot reduction. This applies not only to the body’s abdominal region it applies to every part of the body. Location from which fat is burned can-not be controlled. Stored body fat is burned only by creating a deficit of caloric intake vs. caloric burn. Many times, fitness information we get seems too good to be true. Other times, information is dated and recent research has refuted previous beliefs. Feel free to stop by the office with questions you may have about any fitness information.
