Volvo DaysWith Volvo Days 2011 being such a huge success, staff of CJD could not have been more excited to see what 2012 had in store.

On Saturday 9th June 2012, a select group of CJD Equipment staff and customers arrived in Copenhagen for a whirlwind tour, hosted by Volvo CE. Attendees visited factories and museums, went sightseeing around Copenhagen, took part in recreational group activities and experienced the beautiful Swedish hotels and restaurants. The group spent 2 days attending factories,

including a trip to the Skovde Engine Factory, giving them an inside look at where Volvo Machinery is perfected. One of the major highlights of Volvo Days 2012 was a visit to the Customer Care facility, where Volvo really impressed with a musical display of the different machine models.

FarmFest 2012FarmFest 2012 was staged at Kingsthorpe Park, over three big days in June 2012. More than 2,500 individual companies and organisations exhibited at FarmFest, and CJD Equipment was proud to be one of them. With a display that included a BL71B, EC240C, SD100D and LG938L - Bruce Dumesny, Andrew Egan, Greg Priestley and Ryan Mancer braved the blistering cold weather to meet and greet with our current and prospective customers. A large number of enquiries were received for the Volvo machines but the real show stealer for the day was SDLG. Some good quality leads were received and Greg Priestley was very pleased with the event’s outcome.

Alex Pellicano’s Trip to China with SDLGSDLG Business Development Manager, Alex Pellicano departed Perth for China recently, visiting the widespread country for the first time with NSW General Manager, Andrew Egan. What he discovered was a truly encouraging insight into SDLG China’s immaculate operations. Host Wenbo Wang took the two men to factories solely dedicated to SDLG Wheel Loaders and Excavators. They were taken through the different sections of assembly and witnessed each stage of machine build. Most impressively, Alex discovered that, despite the colossal factory size

and vast number of machines produced, each and every machine is tested and put through the different paces to ensure a high level of quality across the range.

While taking a tour of the Parts Warehouse, Alex witnessed a superior level of service and felt impeccable organisation was demonstrated in all of the SDLG facilities. The knowledge gained has proven invaluable in further educating his customers.

It is no surprise that SDLG Wheel Loaders are Number 1 in China.

Simulator instructions are more effective and enable operators to properly absorb the information they receive, without the possibility of picking up trainer’s bad habits, being affected by environmental constraints, or time limits - all while freeing up machines needed for real production.

Experience has shown that the learning curve is a lot steeper during the first hours when using a simulator as opposed to an actual machine. Knowledgeable instructors can guide the operator through the session, providing useful advice for improving their skills. Incorrect behaviour can be easily identified and corrected and with helpful feedback such as volume per hour, fuel consumption and tire wear, generated during each session, training value and future savings to fuel consumption are increased.

It is easy for employers to manage and follow a new operator’s progress, thanks to the help of statistics generated from each operator’s learning experience using Advanced Training Simulator. For experienced operators, simulator training can sharpen their skills while they practice difficult situations or concentrate on operating in a safer, more fuel efficient and productive manner.

Volvo machines are designed for extreme productivity, and to get the most out of

a machine, it is necessary to have a skilled operator. Training an inexperienced operator under tough and stressful conditions on a live machine can have lasting negative effects, not only on the learning experience of the individual, with the potential for risks associated, but also on maintaining day-to-day business operations. When training a new operator, ensuring machine uptime is crucial to the productivity of your business. The benefits of Advanced Training Simulator are invaluable for beginners, but also an excellent tool to sharpen and optimise the skills of those with experience.Volvo’s Advanced Training Simulator is based on two construction machines – the L120 Wheel Loader which comes with an additional attachment for the Articulated Dumptruck and the EC210C Excavator. The Simulators are specifically designed for developing skilled operators in an effective and efficient manner, with limitless benefits to your business.

The advantages of Advanced Training Simulator are obvious. Research shows that vehicle efficiency can vary up to 40% depending on the experience of the operator. Novice operators are able to train in a safer environment and achieve higher productivity faster than they would by training on a live machine.

The Volvo Simulator uses controls, levers and seat from a real excavator and thanks to advanced 3-D graphics, projection equipment placed in front of the cab and a hydraulically controlled platform - an extremely realistic experience is created for each session, enabling training for all types of work.

The operator feels exactly how the machine will react in various situations. For example: How does it feel when the whole machine is tilting forward? Such risk-filled moments are impossible to practice in real environments without endangering both man and machine,

however Volvo Simulator Training teaches the operator what to do if such a situation should occur.

Although simulators will never replace actual “hands-on experience” out in the field, they can make field practice more efficient, enabling a quicker and cheaper introduction to the machine and the work. The training package contains a large number of work scenarios and training sessions where the operator will learn how to handle the machine, from basic maneuvering, to full operation in rough conditions.

“Fuel economy was important to us as fuel consumption is such a big cost in our business. We are 10% better off as a result of choosing Volvo.” says Andrew.“CJD Equipment and their staff are technically proficient and service-wise they have been great. We have recently been utilising the CareTrack Telematics System and the system is fantastic at providing us with fortnightly reports, a matrix of how many hours the machine works, with percentages, for example, how gear selection is utilised. It is all recorded through a GPS and gives us a way to control what happens in the machine without personally having to sit in it all day.”

“In the four years we have had our machines, our parts and service needs have been met by our 8,000 hour service contract with CJD Equipment and includes a complete service and maintenance package which is very good and was all built into the fixed cost.”

Burdett Sands PTY LTD is a Victorian company that transports a variety of sand

types, raw materials and supplies quarry construction materials to businesses throughout the state. Recently, after much research and a long process of weighing up total machine costs, Andrew Burdett has invested in 5 new Volvo Wheel Loaders to use for his business. The newly purchased equipment includes an L120F Loader, which is used in Burdetts’ concrete batching facilities. There are three L150G’s, utilised in the production of soil blends and brick sand products and an L180G loader which works in the sales end of the operation.

When in the market for new machinery, Andrew sought the advice of CJD Equipment. This was due to having a pre-existing relationship with the company after having previously purchased Volvo Construction Equipment for his business. High levels of productivity and fuel savings, resulting from the use of previous machines were certainly contributing factors in the buying decision with the new products.

“We had an L180E Volvo machine that had done so many more hours over and above other machinery with lower fuel consumption and less maintenance costs, the history of that machine definitely helped with the purchasing decision of the new ones.” says Andrew. He went on to say that “after much ‘like for like’ machine testing, comparisons and demonstrations, we chose to again purchase Volvo from CJD Equipment.”

Dardanup Heritage Park

After working some years in the timber and road transport industries, Gary Brookes and

wife Jill started their own company, ‘Brookes Transport’ in 1977. It was then that Gary purchased his first truck and the rest, as they say, is history. Brookes Transport went on to become one of WA’s largest family owned transport groups, before being sold in 2008. Dardanup Heritage Park Founder Gary Brooks was one of life’s great achievers with a very strong work ethic, great vision and integrity in all of his business practices. From the very beginning, Gary was interested in old machinery and as soon as he got hold of his first tractor, the collecting bug took hold. What started out as a hobby, initially restoring one tractor obtained by his wife, became an impressive skill and obsession.

Located in Dardanup, approximately 15 minutes from Bunbury in WA, sits Dardanup Heritage Park, housing a world-class collection of industrial machinery from Australia’s pioneering past.

“The saying for the park is ‘Keeping Memories Alive’ and we believe that the Dardanup Heritage Park is a fitting tribute to the memory of men and women who pioneered our great country.” says Jill Brookes.

CJD Equipment EXTRACT MAGAZINE /// 11

“As our sons got older they took on more responsibilities within the business. Gary needed to step back a little, and for him, this did not come easily. Even though it was transport that Gary had chosen to make a living from, it was Dozers that were always his first love.” says wife, Jill Brookes. “With this is mind, I set out to find an old Dozer for him to restore. I managed to find one and when it was finished, it looked immaculate and the standard was set for all future restorations.” This was the beginning of what ended up becoming the amazing place that today is known as the Dardanup Heritage Park.

With the help of like-minded enthusiasts, Gary continued to restore at a rapid pace. As the transport depot shed quickly filled up, it was time to move his collectables to a new home. The Brookes family purchased a property nearby, an old engineering shed from Bunbury, and before long that filled up too. Today, 6,500sq/m of building space now houses one of the best collections of international machinery showcasing the equipment used to develop WA over the past 120 years – all restored to their former glory and operation.

Some notable pieces in the collection include a 1903 Marshall Traction engine – of which Jill states, “To our knowledge it is the only one left in the world. You only have to look at this magnificent machine to understand why we chose it to be the emblem of the park.”

They also have a large selection of international farming and industrial machinery, a replica mill settlement, a sawmill, 1890’s Smith Rodley Steam Crane, wagons, horse drawn equipment and over 100 restored tractors and bulldozers. A relocated vintage Bunbury Army Drill Hall houses a very comprehensive military display, with pieces ranging from tanks and medals to missiles, bombs and weapons. The park also houses a stunning timber tearoom which seats up to 120 visitors, as well as a fully operational Heritage Park Print Shop.

“Whilst Brookes Transport was operating, we had a very long and mutually rewarding relationship with CJD Equipment, having purchased a 1992 Volvo Forwarder, an FMG 1440 Forwarder, 2 Timberjack Skidders and countless Kenworth trucks from them,” says Jill Brookes. “We had a great run

out of all of the machines we acquired through CJD. Kenworth were the first new trucks we purchased in 1977 and they were still working when we sold the business in 2008.”

With the amount of Kenworth trucks they were running at Brookes Transport, it was helpful having the Bunbury parts division located so close by. “We were regular customers at the Bunbury and Perth branches and so were thrilled recently when CJD generously donated a massive “KENWORTH” sign to the Dardanup Heritage Park.” Jill says they couldn’t have gotten it on display fast enough.

Gary passed away in August, 2003 at the age of 57 and his legacy lives on through the Brookes family and their loyal staff’s dedication and hard work in keeping his passion for the industry alive.

Understanding — and saving thousands on —

the Total Cost of OwnershipWhat you get out of your machine has to define TCO. Many customers make purchasing decisions by estimating the TCO with this simple equation and comparing machines against each another.

For instance, the Volvo L350F wheel loader has one of the lowest TCOs on the market, independently calculated at $0.20/ton in certain conditions. In certain markets and applications, the initial price of the machine can account for only 16-17% of the TCO — meaning the customer must manage the remaining 83-84% of costs after purchasing the equipment. If a comparable machine costs $0.24/ton to operate, that may not seem at first like a significant difference. But if an L350F working in a quarry has an output of one million tons per year, that’s a savings of $40,000 per year.

Of course it isn’t always possible for a customer to foresee and plan for downtime, due to the uncertainty and dimensions of risk involved. While the probability of the event and the cost thereof might be huge, the costs of the possible consequences or — worse still — of lost opportunities can be even higher and are virtually immeasurable. Volvo, however, can provide a host of equipment and support solutions to help customers better manage risk.

Minimising Costs, Maximising ProductivityThe ultimate goal for any customer, of course, is to achieve optimum productivity and availability. But productivity and availability are influenced by a number of factors related to the machine (including reliability; product technology, design and manufacture; operator attitude and behavior; and user maintenance) and to dealer support (including dealer competence and parts and service availability). With such a complex set of variables, it is simplest for the customer to rely on the machine’s manufacturer to provide solutions for increasing machine availability. That’s why Volvo CE has created a range of tools to help customers maximise productivity and output, while minimising costs. Efficient Volvo engines and systems can help save on fuel costs, while customer support agreements can reduce maintenance costs and reduce the risk of machine breakdown.

Volvo’s CareTrack telematics system allows customers to monitor machine health, fuel consumption and activity, while the Eco-Operator program trains operators in fuel-saving techniques. With these tools, Volvo can help customers get the most out of their equipment — from day of purchase through the entire

When purchasing a new piece of equipment, the most obvious cost is the

price tag on the machine. However, much like an iceberg hidden under the ocean’s surface, there is more to the cost of machine ownership than first meets the eye. Many costs are initially less visible — or can seem more distant — when the customer is discussing a machine’s retail price with the dealer, but that doesn’t mean they are any less important — or any less a part of the cost of owning a machine.

Assessing The CostsThe total cost of ownership (TCO) is the holistic view of costs over time, plus any costs that lie beyond the organisation with third-party suppliers — essentially, all the factors that should be considered whenever a customer purchases a new machine. TCO is the purchase price of the machine, plus the costs of owning and operating it: these include insurance and taxes, interest costs, fuel costs, repair and maintenance, tyres and tools, unplanned downtime, risk management and safety, warranty, operator training and education, field failure and inspection. Adding all of these individual expenses and coming up with a single figure may seem daunting initially, but making this assessment can help customers get into the habit of thinking, acting and purchasing in terms of TCO. Because our design philosophy has always been TCO focused, Volvo can work closely with the customer to enable a holistic approach to TCO.

There’s a greater cost to owning a machine than first meets the eye. Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) presents a quick guide to evaluating - and minimising - Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

lifecycle of the machine. And Volvo’s unique site simulation allows customers to input various factors, including job site, schedule and production requirements, to determine the optimal fleet required, analyse the performance of current machines, compare machine performance, and evaluate and project costs. The program can simulate a variety of types of job sites — including load and haul; load and carry; forestry timber handling; and trenching — and can accurately forecast average production per year.

Delivering Total Cost of OwnershipThe cost of a machine is more than just the amount on its price tag. But Volvo CE products and customer solutions can help customers take the total cost of machine ownership into consideration from Day 1. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg: no matter its purchase price, a machine with a lower TCO can result in tens — or even hundreds — of thousands of dollars in savings over the lifetime of a machine.

VOLVO CE NEWS

Volvo CE partners with WWF to fight climate change.

Volvo CE is the world’s first construction equipment manufacturer to partner with the Worldwide Fund for Nature in an initiative to cut

carbon emissions – and SDLG is blazing a trail of its own by becoming the first Chinese company to join. There is much more to the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) than pandas and tigers: it’s the world’s largest independent conservation organization working with businesses, communities and politicians to tackle the causes and impact of climate change. Now the WWF has teamed up with Volvo CE, SDLG and other members of the Volvo Group to drastically cut carbon dioxide emissions.

With its Climate Savers program, WWF asks companies around the world to commit to reducing their carbon footprints. That is because the non-profit organisation believes that if sustainable development is ever going to be achieved, it will be critical to have corporations on board. WWF collaborates with companies that demonstrate a real commitment to corporate social responsibility – and helps them change the way they do business by setting challenging objectives for reducing their environmental footprints.

Volvo CE has agreed to the Climate Savers challenge, along with Volvo Bus and SDLG, following in the footsteps of Volvo Group and all truck brands including Volvo Trucks, who both signed on to the initiative in 2010. Because of its dedication to its core value of care for the environment, Volvo CE has a long history of working towards sustainable production and has promised to set its goals of CO2 reduction even higher as part of the agreement with the WWF. That means that as a Group, Volvo will now aim to reduce the amount of CO2 emitted by manufactured vehicles by 30 million tonnes - the equivalent of the total CO2 produced by Sweden in a seven month period.

“At Volvo Construction Equipment, environmental care is one of our core values, and it is much more than just a corporate statement: it’s something that we are taking very seriously and working hard to integrate into everything that we do.” Explains Pat Olney, president of Volvo CE. “That’s why we’re delighted to join the Volvo Group in collaborating with an established environmental organisation such as the Worldwide Fund in Nature.

China Joins The CauseVolvo CE’s joint-venture partner in China, SDLG, is a major player in the Chinese construction equipment market and has set a good example for competitors – and other industries – to follow by being the first Chinese business to join the WWF’s Climate Savers program.

China has a high level of pollution in certain parts of the country but the government is taking steps to protect air quality much faster than many other markets internationally. SDLG’s partnership with the WWF is expected to contribute positively to environmental protection and coincide with government legislation around the issue.

Author: Holly Brace - London

Reducing the amount of CO2 it produces by 30 million tones by 2014 will be no small feat for Volvo CE. Here’s the plan to take on the challenge:

• Toimprovefuelefficiencybasedonimprovedtechnical solutions.

• Topresent,internally,aprototypewithconsiderablyimproved fuel efficiency by 2014.

The WWF’s Climate Savers program is a challenging initiative that will help to further reduce our CO2 emissions, increase our products’ fuel efficiency and demonstrate that we’re truly committed to environmental sustainability.”

CJD & Volvo:Reliable in our Rugged and Remote Regions

About one hundred kilometres south west of Karratha in Western Australia’s resource-rich Pilbara region, machines are working overtime on the biggest magnetite mining and processing operation under construction in Australia. Worth an estimated $5.2 billion, the massive Sino Iron project at Cape Preston is being developed by CITIC Pacific Mining.

At the heart of the construction effort is a fleet of Volvo excavators, employed by DTMT Construction and supplied by CJD Equipment, Volvo Construction Equipment’s authorised dealer for Australia.

As the fleet coordinator for DTMT in Perth, Drazen Tolic knows all too well the importance of engaging quality and reliable equipment when working with some of the world’s most powerful mining companies.

“With the expansion of the company, we’re looking at upgrading some of the older machines and expanding our fleet as required.” Drazen says.

Growth from Solid Foundations- An Extract Exclusive Interview - Dowsing Concrete

When Carl Dowsing began his concreting business back in 1985, his aim was to grow

the business by developing a strong reputation for the quality of their concrete footpaths, driveways and hard landscapes. Today Dowsing Concrete reflects those solid foundations, having grown from just one man with a ute – Carl himself! – to a progressive company employing around 30 people, with a large office and workyard in Kewdale, Western Australia, and a fleet of construction machines in continuous use. Carl’s family works with him running the business and his son Bohdan is Dowsing Concrete’s Operations Supervisor. Bohdan says, “We’ve been seeing continuous growth over a long period, with almost every month setting a new record for the quantity of concrete poured.”

Dowsing Concrete creates concrete pathways, playgrounds, roads, islands, ramps, cycle paths, pads for gazebos and barbecue areas, as well as residential driveways, sheds and carports. As well as pouring the concrete, their work involves preparation and excavation of sites,

CJD Equipment EXTRACT MAGAZINE /// 19

for shifting concrete, grass and sand, as well as for loading and unloading their trucks. This extra versatility pays off in terms of productivity, and ultimately allows them to give better prices for their services.

Bohdan says that the support and backing of CJD Equipment adds to his confidence in the SDLG loader and was a factor in them choosing to buy it. “The SDLG loader has been great value for money,” he says. “It’s a good workhorse.” He is also happy with the quality of service from CJD, finding them quick and responsive when he put in the call for the loader’s first service.

The SDLG LG938L Wheel Loader is supported by SDLG’s two year or 2,000 hour warranty, which also covers the machine’s Deutz 6 litre 6 cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. SDLG’s Kevin Jones reports that the LG938L Wheel Loader has shown itself to be extremely robust under Australian conditions and has proven to be very popular here, with over 400 LG938s and LG938Ls currently in service across Australia in agriculture, government and civil contracting and mining/quarrying operations.

removal and disposal of waste, concrete and asphalt cutting, traffic management, reticulation repairs and realignment and reinstatement of verges.

Dowsing Concrete took possession of a new SDLG LG938L Wheel Loader in early 2010, around the time they moved from a smaller premises in Welshpool. Bohdan says that they bought the new loader because their existing fleet of skid-steer loaders wasn’t keeping up with the demands of their market. As soon as they started using the SDLG loader, they saw a difference in productivity with times spent shifting fill and clearing grassy parkland approximately halved.

The robust SDLG loader is used by Dowsing Concrete for bulking out (or as a receptacle for the smaller loaders to load into when bulking out is required in a confined space), slab lifting, loading trucks with fill and moving concrete. According to Bohdan, it used to take them about 30 minutes to fill a truck using the skid steer loaders. Now, with the SDLG LG938L’s big 1.8m3 bucket, filling a truck with clean fill takes just five minutes! The hydraulic Quick Hitch on the SDLG machine means Dowsing Concrete can use the rake and fork attachments (standard with this model)

“The SDLG Wheel Loader has been great value for money. It’s a good solid workhorse.” - Bohdan Dowsing

GRAINCORPAccording to Allan Takacs, Maintenance Manager of GrainCorp Limited, Australia’s grain industry has enjoyed two large seasons after the difficult drought years and has made substantial progress since the deregulation of the single wheat desk, which commenced in 2008. The opportunities for the industry are set to grow substantially, with global population growth increasing demand for protein from developing countries, expected to drive a doubling in the international trade of grain in the coming decades.

“The grain market in Eastern Australia remains highly competitive, with high trader activity and a number of operators providing storage – including on-farm – and logistics services,” says Allan. “In this environment it is critical that GrainCorp takes a strong customer-focused approach. We work hard to provide a good product and win our customers’ support.”

GrainCorp is an international company with over 280 country elevators in Australia. It has a total storage capacity of up to 20 million tonnes spread across more than 2,700 km from Mackay (Queensland) to Portland (Victoria). It also operates seven bulk grain export elevators, serviced by 20 contracted trains with the capacity of hauling up to 4 million tonnes

of grain annually. GrainCorp Marketing buys and sells more than 4.5 million tonnes of wheat, barley, sorghum and canola per year, servicing customers locally with operations in Australia as well as internationally, throughout Europe, the UK and North America.

GrainCorp discovered CJD Equipment through a long-term supplier and ended up deciding on Volvo as their primary machinery provider, due to their price competitiveness in the very tight marketplace. GrainCorp and CJD’s relationship has so far spanned over 25 years and to date they have invested in over 100 Volvo machines.

“The CJD team have worked hard to understand our business and we regularly receive positive operator feedback. CJD’s parts support has come a long way from the early days and the personnel do a great job considering our difficult geographical footprint,” says Allan. “Operators are very happy with the new Volvo products”.

We have machines that clock up to 2500 hours per year and have run for over 20,000 hours in their lifespan and are “still going strong,” Volvo machinery has proven to be a valuable investment for GrainCorp.

Wheat is the staple food of almost half the world’s population and is one of the most important commodities produced by the Australian agricultural industry.

Two of Australia’s leading grain organisations, CBH Group in Western Australia and GrainCorp Limited in New South Wales, talk to CJD’s Extract Magazine about their company, their experiences and their construction equipment of choice and share their east and west coast perspectives on the grain industry as a whole.

CBHThe CBH Group is based in Western Australia and owned and controlled by more than 4,500 grain growers. With their extensive history, going back more than 75 years, the company has continually grown and evolved and now sees them covering everything from grain storage, handling and transport to marketing, shipping and processing. Their storage and handling systems currently receives and exports around 95 percent of the WA grain harvest and is regarded as one of the best in the world.

CBH Group’s Network Resource Manager of Operations, Leon Fallon, says the grain industry is a very challenging environment, which is presenting opportunities at every turn for CBH. “At the moment in WA, there are challenges with availability and supply/lead times, however we are still very busily out loading a record WA harvest from 2011/12 of just over 15 million tonnes (of grain).”

In order to optimise productivity and maximise machine uptime, it is critical that the CBH Group partner with a trustworthy fleet distributor that offers reliable equipment. CBH have been using Volvo Equipment in excess of 10 years and trust Volvo products above all other brands. “The Volvo product is

a better performer all round and they are considered our primary machine for moving grain.” says Leon. “Each machine will move on average about 200,000 tonnes of grain per year and run out to about 13,000 hours, with only some small rebuilds required.”

Leon Fallon comments on the high level of customer commitment shown by CJD and Volvo, “We are very happy as a business. Using Volvo provides us with better staff engagement, operator comfort, fuel efficiency, less downtime and more reliable and efficient machines. CJD Equipment has always been very helpful and supportive of our business needs.”

i is for Innovation

Focus on EmployeesVolvo CE is transforming itself into a company where creativity and ‘thinking outside the box’ are encouraged and embraced.

Good ideas are not only enjoyed by a just a few ‘creative’ individuals – we all have the capability to think up brilliant ideas, however in order to make the most of them, this creativity needs to be nurtured and encouraged. To do that, Volvo CE is embarking on a path that will see an increase in our collective creativity. By fostering ingeniuity, Volvo CE hopes to become the construction industry’s version of Google, 3M or Facebook, although achieving that level of inspiration in the workplace will take more than just putting out beanbags and telling people to ‘think outside the box’. In order for it to be institutionalised, this creativity needs to be nurtured, encouraged and given a high priority within the organisation.

The Power of DaydreamingHow often have you faced a problem that you cannot solve at work – only to think up a brilliant solution later in the day when you are in the shower, driving, or watching TV? (ie. not working) This is because time away from a problem can

help spark a moment of insight. Breaking from work – or looking at problems in a different way – lets the mind turn inward, where it can subconsciously puzzle over meanings and connections with more clarity and because creativity works in unusual ways, institutionalising it within Volvo CE requires a different approach. This is the thinking behind Volvo CE’s iCoach program.

iCoaches are just one of the ways (along with Innovation Jams, Interact, OD etc.) in which creativity can be fostered within a framework, where good ideas can be captured. iCoaches at Volvo CE act as innovation facilitators and are cheerleaders for great ideas. It is their job to instill the concept that innovation is everyone’s responsibility and act as a source of inspiration and information in the field of creative thinking. iCoaches can be found across the company, including the Technology Platform, Product Platform and Project Office.

Although ultimately we believe it is up to everyone within Volvo CE, innovation is led by the Emerging Technologies Department. They regularly organize events where iCoaches gather together to hear about the latest in creative thinking. “It is up to us to try to establish

and implement this new creative mind-set into the organization – and these events are focused on innovation,” says Chunhan Lee, a technology system engineer for the Advanced Engineering Department of Volvo CE. “We split up into groups and share our opinions on cultures, places and experiences that we believe will nurture innovative thinking.”

The iCoach days are also beneficial for increasing employee motivation and promoting a sense of camaraderie. “Networking is very important because everyone brings something different to the table.” Lee says.

Volvo CE hopes to become the most innovative company in its field and is well on the way to achieving this goal. Initiatives such as the iCoach program help to encourage us all to be creative and ‘think outside the box’ wherever possible. Only by putting innovation at the forefront of our activities and state of minds, can we hope to remain a pioneer in the industry. We can stay creative as long as we work at it and continually question the world around us.
