Information
Giving Thanks
November and giving thanks are inseparably
linked together in my conscious and
subconscious mind. Thanksgiving is about giving
thanks for all we have been given.
Thanksgiving doesn’t just happen. Thanksgiving
takes planning, doesn’t it? For Thanksgiving to
happen we need to coordinate schedules, get the
shopping done, do prep for the meal, time the
meal, and more. To really enjoy the celebration
and have everything go just right takes planning.
Giving thanks to God for all God has first given
us is the same way. One of the primary ways we
express our thanks to God is by giving back to
God from our finances. I have never seen or heard
of anyone serving leftovers for the big Thanksgiving meal. For almost all of us,
Thanksgiving revolves around the big meal – and it is never leftovers. Special care
and planning goes into making the Thanksgiving meal. In a similar way, if we fail
to plan our giving of thanks, then it is as though God is getting our leftovers. And
few of us have enough money left over at the end of the month to adequately say
“Thank you” to God. To really say “Thank you” to God requires planning our
financial giving into our monthly budget ahead of time.
One of the ways my family and I say “Thank you” to God is by tithing. In the Old
Testament a “tithe” was “one-tenth.” God’s people brought one-tenth of their
income to the temple. Their income may have been livestock or grain or fruit. We
plan to give this tithe to God in our budget. Whenever we talk about spending
money at our house our thanksgiving to God is a fixed expense planned into our
budget. Not only is it satisfying to say thank you, but we find great satisfaction in
seeing our dollars used for those things we believe are most important in this
world. Tithing also reminds us every day that God is first and foremost in our
lives.
Zion’s fall stewardship emphasis is an invitation for you to
plan your giving of thanks. On Sunday, October 30, or in
the days following, our members and regular attenders
will receive a packet of information. Inside you will
find an Estimate of Giving Card for 2012. An Estimate
of Giving Card is just that, an estimate of how much
you intend to give back to God financially through
Zion in 2012. I invite you to complete this card and
return it on Sunday, November 6 or 13. Not only
does it help you with your “thanks-giving”
planning, it helps congregational leaders to plan the
church’s finances as well. So I ask that you begin to
prayerfully consider and plan to give thanks to God
for 2012.

The 35th Annual Community Festival of
Thanksgiving and Praise will take place
at Zion on Wednesday, November 23 at
8pm. Invite your neighbors and friends
to attend this service of thanks that
brings our community together. This is
truly a faith-filled experience for all
families.
Pastors from the Buffalo area
churches join to give leadership to
this community-wide time of
worship. Over 130 musicians
from different churches are
expected to participate. Choirs
from six Buffalo churches will
combine to present anthems of
thanks and praise with organ
and brass. The handbell choirs
from Zion and other churches
are preparing pieces to be
rung in a massed choir.

New Kids’ Place Staff
Zion would like to welcome and introduce
two new Kids Place staff members. Launi
Stuhr (left) is our new Kids
Place supervisor. She is married and has 2
sons named Daric and Toby. Jolene Halek
(right) is our new Kids Place staff. She is
married and has one little boy named
Leighton. We are blessed to have them as a
part of this program, using their skills and
gifts to serve the children at Zion. If you see
them in the halls on Wednesday afternoons,
please welcome them and let them know we
are thankful to have them as part of our ministry team.
Service of Remembrance
On November 6, 2011, All Saints Sunday, Zion will be holding its annual “Service
of Remembrance” at 4pm. Traditionally, we take this time to honor and
remember our loved ones that have died over the past year or in previous years.
The service includes scripture readings, hymns, prayers, a meditation and Holy
Communion. There is also an opportunity for everyone to light a candle in
memory of their loved ones and to recite their names.

456 event will be in mid-December.
Successful Hog Roast
The Hog Roast on Sunday, October 16, was a great
kick off for the Truckload of Life project.
Rich Arens, Bill Husom, and Goose Kellerhuis stayed
up all night to roast the hogs. They had their work
cut out for them. They enjoyed the company of many
visitors during the evening and night. All enjoyed
the shared stories and laughter. The night air was
chilly, but they stayed warm with a portable fire pit.
More crew members came in to help cut up the hogs
in the morning.
Many volunteers helped to prepare, serve, and clean
up. Over 173 people enjoyed the delicious food and
good company.
At the time of this print, the Hog Roast had raised
$2,000 for the Truckload of Life packaging event and there was much meat left
over to be sold separately.
All proceeds of the hog roast will support the Truckload of Life Project, a major
food packaging event to be held April 15, 2012, sponsored by Harvest of
Hands. Harvest of Hands will lead the congregation and community in coming
together to fill an entire semi-trailer of packed meals (100,000) for those in need
around the world.
Thank you for your support and participation in this project.

The Annual Congregational Meeting of Zion Lutheran Church will be held in
Trinity Hall on Sunday, December 4, 2011 following the 10:30 service (at

Accepting Nominations
The nominating committee is accepting nominations for the following positions:
• 4 Church Council Members to serve for 3 years,

Frozen Comfort Foods
The Food For
Friends freezer
was empty, but
volunteers did a
mini-packaging
session in October
and filled it with
comfort foods like

Noodle Soup.
If you know of
someone who
could benefit from
the aid of meals,
please get some

Baptism Class
Zion offers a class for new or prospective
parents wishing to schedule a baptism.
Anyone wishing to schedule a baptism is
asked to attend a class prior to the date of
the baptism. Expectant parents, as well as
those who already are parents, may
attend the class. Scheduling of baptisms
will take place at the class.
The next classes are Wednesday,
November 2, at 6pm or Sunday,
December 11, at noon. Register at
ZionBuffalo.org/Baptism or by calling the
office.
Sign Up for Prayer Sisters
A Prayer Sister is someone you are
partnered with for the year, whom you
remember in daily prayer. You also send
cards and/or gifts for special occasions, or
whenever God moves you to do so; He
knows when she needs a day brightener.
The following December, the identity of your
Prayer Sister is revealed to you at the
annual Christmas Tea. Sign up now for the
2012 program online or at the Info Desk.
Family Game Night
Bring a snack to share, your favorite board
games and your family and friends, and
join other Zion friends for a Family Game
Night in Fellowship Hall at 7pm on
Friday, November 11.
It's a terrific way to spend a cold fall
evening and meet new families and friends
at Zion. If you have other questions, please
contact Beth Hanson or the church office.
Serving Supper
Zion has been treated to two months of great Wednesday Night Suppers so far
this fall. Over 150 people often come to eat each Wednesday!
A rotation of six great meals are offered to give a great variety to suppers, and
volunteering on a supper team is a great way to serve Zion families and get to
know some new people (both those who are working with and those attending
supper). Volunteers are always welcomed to the Wednesday Night Supper
teams. Consider joining the Sloppy Joe team for their four Wednesdays yet to
come this year (12/ 7, 1/ 25, 3/7, 4/ 25).
Contact Cindy Bonde ([email protected] or 684.1967) for information or to start
serving on a supper team.
Thanksgiving Eve Choir
Singers are welcome to join the Thanksgiving Eve Choir which will sing at the
Community Festival of Thanksgiving and Praise at Zion on Wednesday,
November 23, at 8pm. Rehearse at Zion at 7pm on Sunday, November 20, and
6:30pm prior to the service on Wednesday evening.
Table Project Demonstration
Have you tried the Table yet? It is a new online Zion-specific social network
application aimed at strengthening faith-
sustaining relationships among people at Zion.
Angela Bengtson will be hosting a demonstration
and information session in the Zion Library at
9:35am on Sunday, November 13.
Learn more about why we are using the Table,
how to sign up, how to fill out your profile and
preferences, how to find people and groups and
how to use the prayer and serve tools. There will
also be time for questions.
You are welcome to bring your laptop and/or
Apple mobile device for hands-on help (although that is optional).

Bible Study for Women
Me, Myself, & Lies is an inter-generational study
for all women, either new to studying God’s
Word or more experienced. This study is led by
Donna Magnan on Wednesdays at 9:30am, in the
Zion Library, until November 23.
Me, Myself, and Lies deals with our destructive,
unrealistic self-talk. In this study Jennifer
Rothschild explores the power of self-talk. As
she takes us through the things we commonly say
to ourselves, she teaches us to practice godly and
biblical soul-talk.
We talk to ourselves all the time. We evaluate
everything we do, compare ourselves to others,
and even call ourselves names. We disparage who we are instead of telling
ourselves the truth about who God says we are. Rather than struggling with self-
esteem, body image, stress and other unhealthy thoughts and emotions, this
study encourages us to clean out the junk in our thoughts and replace these
hidden negative thoughts and failures with positive truths from God’s word.
Please contact Donna Magnan at 972-6403 if you are interested in participating
in this study so that enough study guides are prepared.
Zion Book Club
The Book Club selection for Monday, November 14, will be Room by Emma
Donoghue.
In many ways, Jack is a typical 5-year-old. He likes to read
books, watch TV, and play games with his Ma. But Jack is
different in a big way–he has lived his entire life in a single
room, sharing the tiny space with only his mother and an
unnerving nighttime visitor known as Old Nick. For Jack,
Room is the only world he knows, but for Ma, it is a prison
in which she has tried to craft a normal life for her son.
When their insular world suddenly expands beyond the
confines of their four walls, the consequences are piercing
and extraordinary. Despite its profoundly disturbing
premise, Emma Donoghue’s Room is rife with moments of
hope and beauty, and the dogged determination to live,
even in the most desolate circumstances. A stunning and
original novel of survival in captivity, readers who
enter Room will leave staggered, as though, like Jack, they
are seeing the world for the very first time.
This is a low pressure book club. Readers are encouraged to simply come for
discussion with no preparation.
Thanksgiving Visits to
Homebound and Seniors
Do you look ahead into November and
find that you'd have time to stop by a few
homes or care center rooms to visit with
some of Zion's members or friends?
Members of the Naomi Circle and
Rebecca Circle have a list of people they'd
like to visit but they could use a few more
volunteer visitors. Our goal is to make
sure all visits are made between
November 14-22. The circles provide a
small gift to bring as well as the names
and addresses of those to be visited. This
is a great chance to meet some of Zion's
senior members and learn a little more
about Zion's history. If you have an hour
or two to spare, you'll be thankful for the
connections you can make with some
wonderful people.
Contact Sherilyn Burgdorf in the Zion
office (SBurgdorf@ZionBuffalo) to
volunteer.
St. Lucia Supper
On Monday, December 12, the eve of St.
Lucia Day, Zion invites all to a light
supper of soups, breads, cheeses, and
Scandinavian specialties with a brief
program of music, scripture, and
Scandinavian memories. Guest musicians
this year will be the wRight Ringer
Handbell Ensemble. Sign up online or at
the Zion information desk. The Supper
starts at 6pm.
The St. Lucia supper is a family friendly
event that highlights the Swedish
tradition of Lucia, who gave food to those
in need. Many Swedish families and
communities celebrate St. Lucia day with
a breakfast served by the oldest daughter
in the family or someone chosen to wear
the Lucia crown of lighted candles.
Volunteers are welcome to help bake the
traditional Lucia rolls on Monday
morning with master baker Lesley Walz,
help serve the supper, provide Christmas
cookies/treats, or help with clean up after
the supper. Contact Sherilyn
Burgdorf ([email protected] or

Venture North Bike Walk
Coffee Opens
The Venture North Bike Walk Coffee officially launched
on October 8. The day featured a breakfast, a bike parade,
entertainment, and a ribbon cutting with many local
government representatives.
Venture North is dedicating itself to the “newbies” of the
bike world: first time bikers, returning bike riders,
pleasure seeking riders and the health conscious. Venture
North will offer high quality refurbished bikes and
accessories, a coffee/snack bar, bike repair, walking gear,
transit information and activity groups. A mechanics
program will provide high-caliber training for 16 youth
who will intern in the spring as well as mentor younger
learners in Earn-a-Bike and Build-a-Bike programming.
Why is The Redeemer Center for Life
opening a bike shop?
The center will offer many jobs and offer experienced
programming in science and math needed for college prep
courses and opportunities for exercise and improved
health.
How will the center be funded?
The 2011 operations are funded by a Communities Putting
Prevention to Work grant made by the City of
Minneapolis to Redeemer Center for Life. The Center
needs to fund the build-out and all continuing
programming in 2012. Donations will be gladly accepted
in order to keep the bike shop working.

Bloodmobile
The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be back at

to consider donating blood or helping with the many
volunteer needs including setup, greeting,
refreshments, and cleanup. Please see the front desk

blood. Appointments can also be made online.
Contact Beverly Smith at 763.675.3182 or
763.742.7493 with any questions.
Adopt a Family
Zion is again participating in the Adopt A Family
program sponsored by Buffalo Rotary and Love INC Big
Woods, providing practical Christmas gifts for the same
children who are eligible to receive toys from Toys for Tots.
Recipients will fill out a form (their wish list) and pass it on to a coordinator
who will match them with a family, business, or church that want to adopt.
Adopting families (including church families) will receive the wish list from a
family with the child’s name, age and sizes of items to be purchased like clothing,
pajamas, socks, boots and mittens, as well as wrapping paper so the parents can
wrap the items. It is also encouraged to provide (and wrap) a gift for the
parent(s) like a gift certificate to a local merchant.
Confidentiality will be maintained by using different names.
Make someone’s holiday bright and pick a tag with a gift to buy and drop off in
the bin at Zion between November 21-December 11. Recipients will collect their
gifts at Zion on December 15 and 16.
To get involved with this program, please contact
[email protected] or call Love INC-Big Woods at 763.682.6820.
Meals on Wheels
Thank you to all of those who have
been quick to sign up for Meals on
Wheels. Many slots have already been
filled.
Zion is asked to provide three drivers
each day in November at 11:45am for
approximately an hour of meal delivery
to households in the city of Buffalo.
This is a most rewarding activity and
makes a good family service project.
You will receive a reminder call the day
prior to or on your volunteering day(s).
Consider which days you can help and
email [email protected]
or sign up at the information desk. You
can also check the calendar
at ZionBuffalo.org/MOW. Are you on
“The Table” yet? There’s a Meals
on Wheels group there that also
gives complete calendar
information.
If you’ve driven before and
prefer a specific route please
request it when you sign up.
If you’d like to try it but
you’re unfamiliar
with Buffalo, let us
know. We’ll find a
partner for your first
drive.

Harvest of Hands November 5
The 33rd annual Harvest of Hands Festival is just days away! There is
something for everyone:
• Volunteers have been working all year long to fill Trinity Hall with crafts,
baked and canned goods, jewelry, Christmas items, nature, and much more.
There is always something new.
• There is sure to be a bargain-priced treasure for you to discover in one of
the several rooms full of White Elephant items that members have been
collecting throughout the year.
• Made-to-order omelets and crepes, along with fresh baked goods and coffee
make a wonderful brunch.
• There will be fun for the children too. They will be able to paint an

projects and art works.
Proceeds from Harvest of Hands support local and world
hunger. This year the main project supported will be the
Truckload of Life Project, a major packaging event to be held

The Christmas season will be here soon
and that brings out the Scandinavian in
many Minnesotans! We'll eat our share
of lutefisk and meatballs, lefse and the
rest of the Scandinavian treats
including krumkake.
This holiday season the Zion Pipe Organ
task force will help you with your
holiday baking by offering krumkake for

little organ pipes, of course!
Samples of these crispy Norwegian
treats will be offered on Sunday,
November 20, in Fellowship Hall.
Deadline for ordering is November 26.
Your filled order of krumkake will be
available from December 4-11. Presale
orders are encouraged and will be
accepted beginning November 6. Call
the church office, sign up at the
information desk or email
[email protected]. Watch the
bulletin and Zion website for cost
information.
Thank you to all who have supported
the pipe organ repair. Work is
scheduled to begin on the project in
early January and be completed by

What to Get Uncle Sven for Christmas?
If you are like me, you are probably already trying to figure out what to get your
family and special friends for Christmas. Every year I find myself struggling to
create my Christmas list. You begin with the easy part, you list all the names. Ok
so far, but now the real task begins.
Let’s see, first name on the list is our married son Eric. You think back to what
you got him last year- oh yeah- we got him a nice sweater, a couple of sport
shirts, a gift card to Cabela’s and of course a nice warm pair of socks. Sounds
good, I think I can duplicate that again. Ok, next on the list, Eric’s wife ... Oh,
she’s easy. How about one of those new fangled espresso/latté coffee machines?
She loves those morning coffee concoctions that are so popular now. Next, let’s
see grandson Jacob. I know he loves Star Wars stuff and video games. And, of
course, we always get him a boat load of new clothes and stocking stuffers, after
all, he is our grandson. Let’s see, next on the list is Uncle Sven. Man, he has
everything! He always says he doesn’t need anything. Last year he pretended to
like that oversized ball that you sit on which is supposed to help you stay in
better shape. My aunt said that when he finally tried it, he fell off, hit his head on
the coffee table, and had to get four stitches behind his ear. I guess that wasn’t
such a good idea. Hmm, what can I get good old Uncle Sven?
Does all of this sound familiar to you? Does it feel sometimes like Christmas has
become a chore, an obligation to buy things that people don’t need, just to be part
of the celebration? We get bogged down in the obligations and miss the real
reason to celebrate. God gave us a gift that made a world of difference at
Christmas. What if you gave a different type of gift? A gift that may make a
difference for someone you do not even know. Here at Zion and around our
community we have numerous caring opportunities that we can help support.
Does your son really need another pair of socks or could you donate that same
pair of socks to the Redeemer Christmas Store, our sister church in North
Minneapolis? Does your grandson really need all those stocking stuffers that
typically just get lost in the toy bin and are never seen again? What if instead you
donated those same dollars to All Kids Can Learn International in your
grandson’s name? It could be a great teaching moment and lesson that you could
share with him. Oh yeah, what about Uncle Sven, give him a special gift too, after
all he didn’t want anything and he has always been very generous to
others. Maybe a financial gift to Lutheran World Relief or Mission
Jamaica to help with the purchase of food and other supplies would
be the perfect gift to Uncle Sven.
The Global Mission Committee encourages that before you and your
family jump into the annual Christmas gift purchasing cycle, a family
discussion is in order. What if you talked about how you could, as a
family, share your gifts with others? Can you and your family
“Make a World of Difference?” God encourages us to share the
possessions that he has shared with us. If you are encouraged
to give, you can do so in a couple of different ways. You can
send your gifts directly to your chosen organization or you
can give your donation to the church, designating it to Global
Mission and noting the specific organization on your check.

The Table is a new online Zion-specific social network application aimed at
strengthening faith-sustaining relationships among people at Zion.
Why Table Users Love the
Prayer Wall
• There’s no need to pass requests
around—everyone can be instantly
updated.
• A prayer can be updated with new
info. No need to send out repeated
emails keeping people in the loop.
• Using the ‘Pray Now‘ button you can
let people know that you’re praying.
That’s encouraging. If you posted a
prayer request, you can be notified of
that on-going encouragement—
there’s a shot in the arm when you’re
going through something tough.
• You can use the ‘flag’ feature to call
out prayer gossip and keep the Prayer
Wall legit.
• You can post anonymously. Sure, the
prayer chain would let you do that,
but somebody always knew. With the
Prayer Wall it’s actually anonymous.
• The Prayer Wall becomes an archive
of your Zion’s prayer history. Imagine
being able to search through years of
prayer history at your church. There’s
a lot of power in revisiting answered
prayer and seeing how God has
moved.

Our Vision Is Near!
At last year’s annual meeting, the
congregation passed a resolution for a
Vision Task Force to lead the
congregation through a visioning process
in 2011, which included:
• Identifying several key initiatives
which will provide direction and focus
for the mission and ministry of Zion
for approximately the next 5 years,
• Developing a strategic plan to
implement the initiatives into the life
of the congregation,
• Putting into one document the
mission statement, vision statement
and strategic plan for implementation
of the key initiatives, and
• Presenting the above for approval at
the 2011 Annual Congregational
Meeting.
During the past year, the congregation
and staff have been actively involved in
providing their input to the visioning
process through the church assessment
and small group forums. The culmination
of this process was the development of the
proposed:
• vision statement,
• three key initiatives (Celebrating On
Sundays, Living God’s Call, and
Connecting with Care) and,
• strategic plans to implement these
initiatives.
This proposal will be mailed to voting
members later this month with the Annual
Meeting information.

Musings from
Myron
I feel blessed to be part of a church that
has a growing enthusiasm.
“What? Enthusiasm? What are you
talking about?” is probably what most
people would think of that statement.
It is great to be part of a community that
is willing to go through some of the
challenges that Zion has gone through, to
better advance the kingdom of God.
Philippians 4:4 says, “Rejoice in the Lord
always; again I will say, Rejoice.”
Few things make us feel as used up as being unenthusiastic about a task.
Likewise, when we feel used up, it’s hard to be enthusiastic about any task. We
feel exhausted when we are asked to participate in something that seems
spiritually dead, useless or hopeless.
On the other hand, we feel charged up and eager to go when we are involved in
something that involves our gifts and talents, where our efforts make a difference
to others.
Perhaps you have been swept up in enthusiasm recently - maybe with success of
your favorite team, because you were asked to participate in something you
enjoy, or because you felt a spirit of unity and togetherness. Maybe you achieved
something special and you wanted to tell others about it.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have this same enthusiasm every day - at school, home,
about our education, or even church? With the benefit of enthusiasm, there
would be no end to what we could accomplish together.
The apostle Paul urges us to rejoice always, to have an excitement and an
enthusiasm about our faith. Sometimes rejoicing is difficult; but when we
remember that God is the source of all good things - the source of our strength
and comfort - we can rejoice because God is good, all the time even in our
messiness.
A few questions for you to ponder:
• What are some things that make you enthusiastic and how can you use them
to help further your faith?
• What is truly holding you back from rejoicing in all that you do?
• What excites you most about God?
Take time to write these down. Post them somewhere, so that you can see them
daily. Then, take time to bring them to God … whether they be struggle or
celebrations … and do it enthusiastically!

The Blessing of Leading Grapple
Hello! My name is Tammy Zumbusch. I am fortunate enough to be Zion’s
Grapple leader for our 5th and 6th grade boys and girls. Grapple is a curriculum
that truly speaks the language of preteens. It is designed to answer real life
questions and tackle issues preteens care most about. In essence, we “grapple”
with issues that kids their age deal with,
finding answers by digging into the
Bible. My experience with Grapple has
been nothing short of one of the greatest
blessings in my life thus far. Let me
explain why, and I believe the reason to
be two-fold.
First it is my belief that children are
born, “knowing” God. We are all made
in his image and therefore we, “feel”
Him, His love, His presence, before we
can put it to words. We all have an
innate yearning to get closer to Him.
One of my favorite stories is about Helen
Keller. When she was finally given the
gift of language and was taught about
God she simply said, “I knew it!” No one
was there to impose their views on her,
and yet, she felt His presence. That is
the coolest thing about teaching
children, you aren’t working alone. The
Holy Spirit is there to guide you every step of the way. You are awakening in
them what has already been “built in” by the Master Craftsman. The children we
teach are CREATED to love, worship and serve their Heavenly Father. By being
there and guiding them, we help foster that relationship. Witnessing a child
grow in his/her relationship with God is like getting a front row seat to watch a
flower bloom, a breeze cool someone off, or an ocean produce waves. We get to
witness them become who they were created to be.
The second reason has to do with my personal relationship with God. I am
married, with 5 children. Life gets hectic. We pray before meals and before bed.
God is a part of our everyday life as a family. However, our relationship with
God, like anything, takes time and effort to flourish. Before Grapple, I found
myself often times putting my relationship with Him after my relationship with
my children and my husband. Sometimes extended family would even get a
higher priority. Which is just silly as all my ability to love comes from Him. I
never stopped having faith, or stopped worshipping Him, I just didn’t take time
to nurture our relationship. However, when I prepared for Grapple, I would do
so by first praying that the Holy Spirit work through me to reach the children
and I would, simply stated, spend time with Scripture. I would decode it for the
sake of explanation for the kids. This would also clarify the message for me and I
would find myself learning and seeing the well-known Bible stories in a whole
new light. (I guess that is why it is called the Living Word.) I came to realize

that the days I spend preparing for
Grapple, I would experience a sense of
peace throughout the entire day. Since
then, and because of that fact, I have
made my relationship with Him a
priority. I take every day to spend time
with Scripture.
I am convinced that it is when we use
our passions/gifts for the glory of God,
that the time and effort we put forth
will always pale in comparison to the
Heaven Sent blessings we receive.
