Ladies’ Guild/Mothers’ UnionWe welcomed members from the ICA to share with us as we heardabout the work of St Vincent de Paul in October. Mr Dempsey was awonderful ambassador for SVP—telling us about the organisation &finance, but also sharing many personal stories and experiences thatgave us a wonderful insight into the importance and effectiveness ofthe work as so many volunteers seek to ‘be the hands and feet of ourLord’ to those in need. He emphasised that the dignity of all clientsis paramount and the volunteers are non-judgemental and acceptingof everyone. We could have listened for hours! Our cake stall raised€240 which was a good start to the year’s fund-raising and it wasgreat to present this to Mr Dempsey as a first instalment.Nov 15th—8pm in Parish Centre to wrap Christmas gifts forRosenalee residents & shop at the MU Enterprise stall.

27 parishioners went on the bus—and moreagain in their own cars—to support Ruth &Alan at Ruth’s institution as Rector of Mount-mellick Group of Parishes .Thanks to Ted fororganising the bus...and keeping track of usall! SPANSPANSURVIVING AND THRIVING INTIMES OF RECESSION

Over the last few years Simon and Eleanor Stokes havebeen at the sharp end of the recession with their scaffold-ing business. They found God intervened when they wereafforded the opportunity to attend the New Wine confer-ence this year. But it wasn’t a simple decision to attend inthe first place, as they now tell us.

“We were thrilled with the generosity and kind offer ofbeing able to attend New Wine. But the question was, howcould we go from the point of view of both of us beingaway from work at the same time? Deeper still, Eleanorwas slightly nervous of the whole concept of New Wineand what it involved. There were many “ifs” and “buts”,however we both knew deep down from the beginning thatwe should attend. And boy, we were right to do so!From the very first moment of arriving in Sligo, we had a

feeling that the week was going to be special, and it was.God touched us in ways we didn’t even know were possi-ble. There were so many times that we felt the peace ofthe Holy Spirit on us that it is hard to pick out particularinstances. I think it was the Monday night that a speakercalled John Kirkby spoke about CAP (Christians AgainstPoverty). To be honest both Eleanor and I went along, thinking that it would nothave a lot to do with us.Were we wrong!!!!

The only way we candescribe it, is if you can imagine listening to a talk andthinking that what was said was one hundred percentmeant for you and you alone. John spoke directly into ourlives at that moment as he shared his own story. He hadbeen running a successful business only to see it collapse, leading to the break-up of his marriage and family. We toohad experienced enormous pressure on our family life andonly by the grace of God had survived. We knew just howhe felt and marvelled as John spoke about his coming tomeet Jesus after a pastor rented a house from him – hedesperately needed the money. The pastor realised howhe desperately needed the Lord!

That evening, we cried, we laughed, and we sat in a stateof nearly disbelief. We went up afterwards for prayer andwere very much touched by God. If we had had to leavethe very next day, we would have left different people.Along with how we were touched personally we also feelstrongly about the work CAP are doing, and maybe this issomething God would like us to be involved with in thefuture.

If that was not enough for us to take in, the very nextmorning we went to “Just Looking” ( a session for those

who want to explore issues of faith). George Newellwas taking the Seminar and he was talking aboutNaomi. Neither of us knew anything about her story,of God providing in time of need amidst huge pres-sures. Once again it was as if George knew exactlywhat was going on in our lives and he had preparedthe talk for us. Needless to say, once again we weredeeply touched by God.

Time after time throughout the week, God literatelyamazed us. We received prophetic words whichspoke directly into our life’s and were spoken out bypeople we had never met in our lives.

Leaving aside the spiritual aspect of the week, wealso got the chance just to have fun as a family. Play-ing hiding seek with the kids around Yeats village andbasically just doing normal family stuff with our chil-dren. We also got a chance to get to know otherchurch members especially through the monster BBQ(if felt like the whole of New Wine was present!)hosted by Ivan and June McMahon.

We arrived home feeling refreshed and with a clearerview of where we are going. It is almost impossible toput into words our gratitude. We both feel we will lookback on this week in time to come and say it was adefining time in our lives.

Now three months later our business is a muchsmaller operation. We have been lucky enough to beable to reduce most of the company debt. With still abit to go, we have no clear idea what the future holdsfor us, individually or as a family, but we do feel thatGod has a plan for us. We have become muchstronger in our faith. We are continuously listening towhere we are being guided. (Sometimes this is in theopposite way to what we think!!!) We have beenblessed with a new source of income from our yardand we know this is God's doing, as if he saying “chillout I will cater for your needs in the future”.We try not to think or worry about our future, eventhough it looks like there won't be much income fromthe business, as God has never left us down . He isaware of our needs and we know that He will havesomething in place to for us. So we look forward witha sense of excitement and anticipation to see justwhat it is.”

SPANSPANLove must be overspent, over-extended, overdrawn, all

the time — for that is the only way it can grow. Love is so farfrom a media sum game that love is almost like manna. It cannotbe hoarded and set aside for some future date. Our own individ-ual portions of love must be used up in full everyday. If we followthat prescription, the more you use it the more it grows, then weare guaranteed an inexhaustible resource of love for our wholelife.” Leonard Sweet (author and theologian).

As Ruth leaves the Union of Churches these words seem apt.For amongst all the gifts Ruth shared with us, it is her love thatstands out - she has a special capacity for love. The danger forus,is that we will withdraw into our shells leaving a vacuum to befilled by her replacement. But Leonard Sweet’s words remind usthat we all have a capacity for love to be used everyday and forthe building up of the fellowship. In fact in the NT there are 29“One another” references. Here are three:

Love one another, deeply, from the heart. 1 Peter 1 v 22,Be patient bearing with one another in love. Ephesians 4 v 2Encourage one another daily. Hebrews 3 v 13

Quite simply God seems to place more store onthe love shared among church members than theleadership of one individual. Ruth for one, will bedelighted to hear that the love just keeps growingamong us!

Ruth’s farewellAround 150 crammed the Parish Centre for Ruth’s farewell ser-vice and lunch, and amidst much emotion we said farewell to herand Alan. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the occasionwith mountains of food, the set up and clearing away afterwards.

Alpha and House GroupsIt is a joy and encouragement to hear about the large numbers atthe Blarney Alpha course and to hear of well attended courseselsewhere in the Diocese. As a tool for evangelism ( the firstmark of the church “Tell the Good News”) it has stood the test oftime – it is nearly 20 years since it was promoted for the widerchurch, having had a long track record in its place of birth, HolyTrinity, Brompton London.

From the course completed in the spring thisyear, eight new people have signed up forhouse groups, including a new one inBallincollig made up of members of the C of Iand RC church. For that to happen one house group had to ineffect “die” as they led the Alpha course. And of course the grouphas reconvened and is stronger for the experience, which under-lines the fact that for small groups to flourish, they have to gobeyond their comfort zones and reach out.

Youth WorkThe youth work has taken positive steps forward, with a numberof those in Transition Year and above, embarking on the YouthLeaders course. Kicking off with a weekend away, the youngpeople will meet monthly together for training, pair up with amentor from the congregation for an hour once a month, and getinvolved with leadership e.g. in the Glow group. Training youngpeople in leadership was identified as one of the key aims duringthe recent Youth Work Review, and it is good to see it takingplace so quickly.

PeopleVery best wishes to Herbie Calvert as he moves to live in Lapp’s Court.

Building Blocks ConferenceThe annual Children’s Ministry Conference will be held on Saturday13th November in Dublin and on 20th November in Belfast. A fewpeople involved in children’s ministry in the parish are hoping to go. Ifyou’d be interested, please contact the parish office for more details—or see www.buildingblocks.ie

“Responding to Emmanuel” –

The Feast of St AndrewTuesday 30th November 2010 8.00pm

St Peter’s, Carrigrohane

The Diocesan Council for Mission (DCM) would like to invite you to joinus on the Feast of Andrew for a simple communion service and reflec-tion when we are “Responding to Emmanuel”.This Emmanuel is one of our members: Emmanuel Adabisi, who pre-sented his thoughts about mission to us at a recent DCM meeting. Itwas a heart felt cry from an African for a renewed love for theproclamation of the Gospel by the churches in Ireland, and an expres-sion of sadness at our apparent lack of passion and commitment. In ourresponse DCM members shared frankly with Emmanuel that we haveheard many similar stories before from Africans. If we’re honest though, we are often at a loss to reply to Emmanuel and

other similar cries, apart from half hearted appeals to cultural differ-ences, etc. Rarely do we respond creatively to how we proclaim theGospel in our context. So we are meeting on St Andrew’s day to try andmake a positive response to Emmanuel.During the evening there will be the following:

Brief presentations:• Identifying the gifts of our congregations – Mark Dunwoody

(Diocesan Youth Officer).• Glorying in the Remnant – Rev David Armstrong• “Just People” - Helen Lane introduces us to a course to
