Monday, November 21, 7:00 PM,

at the Unitarian Universalist

Congregation of Little Rock

1818 Reservoir Road

Tradition continues with Interfaith Thanksgiving service on November 21, 2011 Continuing a tradition of many decades, the annual Community Interfaith Thanksgiving Service

sponsored by west Little Rock area congregations will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation

of Little Rock, 1818 Reservoir Road, on Monday evening, November 21, at 7:00 PM. Participating

congregations include: Westover Hills Presbyterian Church, St. James United Methodist Church, Temple

B’Nai Israel, The Islamic Center for Excellence, Christ the King Catholic Church, and Second

Presbyterian Church. Pastor Sieg Johnson from St. James United Methodist Church will preach the

sermon. The Thanksgiving offering will benefit Arkansas Rice Depot, a hunger agency which is

experiencing an increased demand for its services in our current economic climate. Music will be

provided by a choir from the Unitarian Universalist Church.

In a world that seems much smaller and much more interdependent than we knew before September

11, 2001, the opportunity to share gratitude and worship is important to our faith communities. Many

congregations and leaders are aware in new ways of other religions and of people of other faiths in their

midst. As a matter of God’s shalom and justice, our congregations are reaching out to stand in solidarity

with people of different faiths, especially with those who have been demonized and become the objects of

violence and abuse. Part of the power of Thanksgiving, which helps make it a distinctively American

religious holiday, is that people from very different backgrounds can all sit together and participate in the

ritual of giving thanks.

Please join us for this wonderful celebration of worship with our neighbors. A time of fellowship will

also be held at the conclusion of the service.

“The First Christmas”- Leaders: Matt Christenson, Bobby Williamson, Jim Miller New Short Term Sunday School Class

Most of us consider the story of Christmas the most loved and familiar Bible story. Did you know that there is much more to the story than what we hear on Christmas Eve each year? What do the Gospels really teach about Jesus’ birth? Participants in the class, based on Marcus Borg and John Dominick Crossan’s book, The First Christmas, will have the opportunity to explore the nativity story in the context of both the first and twenty-first centuries. Come and discover the riches and challenges of exploring this familiar story in its original context. The class begins Sunday, October 30 and continues through Advent. It will meet in Room 65/66 at 9:50 on Sunday mornings.

support you through a crisis or difficult time?

Or

Do you know someone … perhaps a friend, neighbor, co-worker, colleague, or relative, who could benefit from this type of

care?

Then contact … one of our Stephen Leaders listed above. They can tell you more about our Stephen Ministry and how you—or

your friend— can be matched with a Stephen Minister.

Stephen Ministry Training

With an overnight retreat on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21 and 22, 10 members of Second Presbyterian Church began their 50

hour Stephen Ministry training with a 2 year commitment to serving members and people of the community in need of

care. Please keep these members in your prayers.

The Stephen Ministry logo, with the broken person behind the cross and the whole person in

front of the cross, symbolizes that we are all broken people and that it is only through the

cross of Jesus that we are made whole. Stephen Ministers will help guide you in your

This is a very fun activity where participants get to know one another better as they work side by side in preparing the church for the Advent and Christmas season, as well as working to make the season a little brighter for some of our brothers and sisters in need.

•5:00 – 5:45 pm dinner in the Great Hall: hot dogs, baked potatoes and fixin’s •5:45 – 6:30 pm activities: decorate the church for Advent and Christmas, help with a Christmas Mission project, or work on a Christmas craft •6:30 – 7:00 pm closing program and Chrismon tree lighting in the Sanctuary

Activities are planned for children 3 and older, youth, and adults. Childcare is available for infants and younger children. There is no cost for dinner, but it will help us in our planning if you will let us know you are attending. Please register online at www.secondpreslr.org or by calling the church office, 227-0000. If childcare is needed, please confirm that in your registration.

It takes many hands to organize this event. Special thanks to members of the Outreach, Worship, Belonging, Youth, Children’s, Property, and Fellowship Ministries. We are also grateful to David Beach and Guy Howze, who spend hours helping us get ready to decorate together!

ALL ARE WELCOME!!! Join your church family as we prepare for

Dream Group A small group of interested people regularly meets at Second Presbyterian Church to share and study our dreams. We meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, 6:00 - 8:00 in the evening. We are opening the membership of this group at this time to new persons who would be willing to do a little study-reading about dream interpretation and then follow up with confidential discussion of dreams at our stated meetings. The group is organized and directed by Maybian and Don Wardlaw who have had several years of training and involvement with such dream work. The philosophy of the work is based on using knowledge of dreams to help us each become more familiar with our unconscious, and thus growing toward becoming whole and healthy human beings. We examine the possibilities of dreams being the "forgotten language of God". For information about joining the group contact Maybian at 228-0021 or [email protected].

Second Readers

Dr. Chuck Chappell, Hendrix Department of English, will lead a discussion of William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying. The novel revolves around the death of Addie Bundren and her request to be buried in the city of Jefferson. Much of the story tells of the family's difficult 40 mile wagon journey through rural Mississippi to fulfill her wish. The characters each narrate sections of the story allowing the reader to know their minds and inner thoughts. Visitors are welcome to join the group on Wednesday, November 16, at 4:30p.m. in Room #60. For information contact Fayrene Johnson at [email protected] of 663-2733.

What will YOU build?

Habitat for Humanity of Pulaski County

When thinking about ways to contribute to Habitat for Humanity of Pulaski County, many people think about swinging hammers and painting. However, without funding used to purchase building materials, volunteers would not have anything to work on! Simply put, Habitat for Humanity of Pulaski County’s primary need is monetary support, and there are many ways that you can contribute!

We’re sustainable! We build “green” homes and operate on a sustainable business model. We have been in Pulaski County for over 20 years and have built over 100 homes. We are proud of the impact we have on the community and look forward to many more years of providing a hand up, not a hand out! Visit our website, www.habitatpulaski.org for more information including contact information for our Staff and ReStores.

Donate to our ReStore: •In late 2011, a second ReStore location will open in Pulaski County at 6700 S. University Avenue in Little Rock and we can’t open our doors without merchandise! We need YOU to donate your gently used home furnishings and any unused building supplies to our ReStore! •Friends don’t let friends fill landfills: Our ReStore has kept tons of waste from entering our community’s landfills! Unlike other donation drop off centers, we can often accept items others cannot such as wood flooring, tile and carpet. •Our Restore is a ministry within itself by offering quality merchandise at low prices. •We will not place merchandise on our floors that is not in “good, working condition.” All electrical items are tested for use before they are priced on our floor. •Profits from the ReStore cover the overhead expenses of our organization therefore; all monetary donations are used to fund the building of a home for one of our qualified Habitat partner families.

Volunteer with us! •Habitat volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization and we know how to show them a great time! •No “special skills” necessary, all volunteers are supervised by trained professionals. •Rewarding team-building experience for all involved!

Grief Recovery Seminar Sunday afternoons in December and January

Those who have suffered a loss, and are experiencing grief or depression, often find it difficult to face the holiday season, which is fast approaching us. Many people are not aware that the pain of a loss of any kind – death, divorce, loss of a job, loss of a friend – can take months or even years to heal. It is natural and normal to feel sadness or anger, experience loss of faith, have lots of questions and doubts during a time of grief or loss.

The Pastoral Care Ministry of our church is providing a safe place for people to express their feelings, experiences, thoughts, questions, doubts, and pain. A support group for those experiencing grief and loss will be held on Sunday afternoons beginning December 4 and continuing December 11 and 18 and January 8, 15, and 22. The group will meet from 3:00 to 4:30 PM in the church library.

John Russ, facilitator, says, "The group is designed to be a safe place to bring yourself and your story. Though everyone's story is different, participants will likely find a common thread that helps them encourage each other." John is a church member and professional counselor. Participants may join the group at any time. Give yourself a gift this holiday season of having a place to come and share your thoughts as well as giving and receiving support. You may register for this support group by calling the church office at 227-0000 or emailing [email protected]. There is no charge for attending these sessions. Call or email Karen Akin with questions or concerns.

dementia. This is an open group and new members are always welcome. Care-giving is an incredibly significant gift you give

those you care for, and caregivers need care, too. Please consider joining this group of folks who will share your concerns and

joys in care giving. If you have any questions, please contact Karen Akin at 501-227-0000 or email [email protected].

Night of Lights to Remember On this night we pause and thoughtfully reflect on the lives of those who have been affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. We remember and honor these special individuals with the lighting of personalized luminaries, a short spoken tribute and a moment of silence. As we walk up and down the rows of personalized glowing luminaries we give thanks, knowing our lives have been forever changed in some special and magical way by their presence. The Pastoral Care Ministry of our church partners with Alzheimer’s Arkansas for this special event. Please join us on November 6th in the front of our church at 7pm. If you would like to purchase a luminary contact Alzheimer’s Arkansas at 224-0021. The cost is $10 each or three for $25. Alzheimer’s Arkansas will personalize and light the luminary for you. Proceeds support the services Alzheimer’s Arkansas provides at no charge to family caregivers.
