How to Paraphrase

Paraphrasing restates the text in your own words.

First sentence: “Many years ago there was a king, who was somewhat primitive and crude. While the king’s ideas were influenced by others who were more modern in their thinking, they were still showy and uncivilized. This pleased the part of him that was wild.” Source:

Semicolons

Never before had such a case occurred; never before had a subject dared to love the daughter of a king.

The semicolon joins two independent clauses.

An independent clause (or main clause) is a clause that can stand by itself as a simple sentence. An independent clause contains a subject and a predicate and makes sense by itself.

Page 30: November 16 – 20 th, 2015. Monday Every Day Edit In a whole in the ground they’re lived a hobbit. not a nasty dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends.

Examples of Independent Clauses Here are some examples of independent clauses

(shaded). Notice how they could stand alone as sentences. (This is the difference between an independent clause and a dependent clause.)

Life is something that happens when you can't get to sleep. (Fran Lebowitz)

The best defense against the atom bomb is not to be there when it goes off. (Anon)

I have enough money to last me the rest of my life, unless I buy something. (Jackie Mason)

Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there. (Will Rogers, 1879-1935)

My one regret in life is that I am not someone else. (Woody Allen)

Independent Clauses Activity Cut up clauses, some independent

and some dependent. Join independent clauses with a

semicolon; then create your own sentence.
