The Granddaddy Of Them All

January 1, 20181pm PT

Michigan at WisconsinSat., Nov. 11, 9 am PT, FOXThe Wolverines and Badgers have a similar blueprint to their success: run the ball and play stout defense. Michigan has the No. 30-ranked rushing offensive in the country, while Wisconsin is No. 18 nationally. On the defensive side of the ball, the Badgers and Wolverines are two of the top defenses in the country, with Wisconsin boasting the top-ranked defense and Michigan checking in at No. 3. While both of these teams have obvious strengths, it could be their weaknesses that let them down. The Wolverines have struggled in the red zone and had shaky quarterback play. The Badgers are turnover prone and have committed costly penalties. With two teams that have such similar styles, the team that can minimize its mistakes will come out on top.

Navy at Notre DameSat., Nov. 18, 12:30 pm PT, NBCIf you’re a fan of running the football, this is the matchup for you. Navy leads all of college football by averaging 369.8 rushing yards per game and Notre Dame is No. 6 in the country with 303.2 yards on the ground per game. While both schools have proven they can run the rock, they do it in very different ways. Navy runs a triple option offense led by quarterback Zach Abey, who leads the Midshipmen with 1,202 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. Notre Dame features one of the best offensive lines in the country and uses a one-two punch of running back Josh Adams and quarterback Brandon Wimbush to run the ball. It won’t be three yards and a cloud of dust, old school, smash mouth football, but when the final stats come out, this may look like a game from the early 1900’s.

UCLA at USCSat., Nov. 18, 5 pm PT, ABCIn the battle for Los Angeles, the Trojans and Bruins will meet for the 85th time, both vying for the Victory Bell. Often times, it can be said that in rivalry games, you can toss the records out the window because anything can happen. Over the last decade, games in this rivalry haven’t been nail biters. The Bruins won by 10 in 2012, 38-28, in the closest game over the last 10 years. The last significant upset in this series was in 2006, when the Bruins beat the No. 2 Trojans 13-9 and kept USC out of the National Championship. While a National Championship berth isn’t directly at stake and USC has the Pac-12 South already won, a win for UCLA would make the Bruins bowl-eligible. Expect plenty of points in this one.

Games of the Week

Mike Weber, RBOhio State

The sophomore running back for the Buckeyes has battled injuries all season long, but had a stellar game against Michigan State on Saturday. Weber ran for a career-high 162 yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries, which is an average of 18 yards per carry. Weber’s touchdown runs came from 47- and 82 yards, with the latter setting a new career-long run.

Hercules Mata’afa, DEWashington State

One of the most disruptive pass rushers in the Pac-12, Mata’afa had a career day against Utah in Week 11. The junior defensive end tallied a career-high in tackles (8), tackles for loss (5) and sacks (3). He also added a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. The Cougars defeated the Utes, 33-25.

After another wild week, the polls seem to have balanced themselves out. The losses by Georgia and Notre Dame have dropped them out of the top-four, but the Bulldogs and Irish still find themselves in the top-10. TCU, Michigan State and Washington all dropped as well, with Washington falling the furthest, nine spots from No. 9 to No. 18. Stanford, the team that handed the Huskies that loss, found itself back in the poll this week, checking in at No. 22. The Big Ten has six teams ranked, while the Pac-12 has four.

The Associated Press Poll is made up of a panel of 61 sports writers and broadcasters from around the country.

The USA Today Poll is also known as the Coaches Poll and is selected by the Amway Board of Coaches, made up of 64 head coaches at Bowl Subdivision schools. All are members of the American Football Coaches Association.

The College Football Playoff rankings are selected by a 13-person committee of current athletic directors, former college football coaches, a University President, a former NCAA executive, and a current media member. The committee will issue its first rankings Tuesday, October 31, with subsequent rankings taking place the next five weeks.

Big Ten & Pac-12 College Football NewsUniform watch: Ohio State to wear alternates vs. Michigan; Notre Dame to feature old-style helmetsThe Buckeyes wore gray uniforms with a black helmet at home against Penn State last month. For the season finale against arch rival Michigan in Ann Arbor, OSU will go with an all-white combination. According to Nike, the November 25 matchup with the Wolverines marks the first time in history that OSU will wear a full white combination with both jersey and pants.

This Saturday, in the name of Knute Rockne, Notre Dame will be dialing it back a few decades by wearing “Rockne Heritage” uniforms. The uniforms will feature brown, leather-like cleats and the gold helmets with graphics inspired by the stitching of 1930s leather helmets are a nod back to that time when Rockne and his team of Fighting Irish were just beginning to take the college football world by storm.

Louisville’s Lamar Jackson sets NCAA mark for passing and rushingLouisville Cardinals quarterback Lamar Jackson became the first player in college football history to total at least 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in consecutive seasons during Saturday’s game against the Virginia Cavaliers, according to Louisville.

Arkansas AD Jeff Long firedArkansas confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that athletic director Jeff Long will not be returning. A statement by UA said that Long is out effective immediately and that associate AD Julie Cromer Peoples will serve as interim AD. The school also states it will honor the provisions of Long’s contract, which runs through 2022.

Charles Barkley and Alabama QB Jalen Hurts make jersey betTNT broadcaster and former Auburn basketball player Charles Barkley and current Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts have a bet on the outcome of the Iron Bowl between Auburn and Alabama. Speaking on JOX FM, Barkley said Hurts challenged him to a bet in which the loser has to wear the other team’s jersey after the Iron Bowl on November 25. Barkley would wear the jersey in studio on TNT, while Hurts would have to wear his rival’s jersey on campus.

Texas A&M prepared to pursue Florida State’s Jimbo FisherTexas A&M is expected to inquire about the interest level of Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher once its separation from current coach Kevin Sumlin is official at the end of the season, according to two people familiar with the situation.
