Narendra Modi to Hold Mini Summit In Fiji

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to use his visit to Fiji to meet with leaders of 13 other Pacific Island countries.According to the Hindustan Times, Modi wants to meet with some other leaders in the backdrop of reports of growing Chinese influence in the South Pacific from heavy investments on infrastructure.Sources say all the 13 nations have agreed to attend, most of them at the prime ministerial level or “someone at the number two or three level”.The main tangible diplomatic gains for India will be in areas like global climate change talks where the so-called “Durban coalition” of small islands and developed countries is cracking.Pacific Islands have also become one of the largest voting blocs in the United Nations and India had set up an online

communication system for the islands to win their support for the Indo-US nuclear deal several years ago.Meanwhile, Fijian High Commissioner to India Yogesh Karan told the newspaper that there’s so much excitement about the Indian PM’s visit to Suva and people are asking why Modi can’t stay back longer.Fijian PM Voreqe Bainimarama was one of the first international leaders to have congratulated Modi after the BJP was voted to power in May.Karan said the traditional welcome Fiji would extend to the Prime Minister had in the past been given to top global personalities such as Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles and Indira Gandhi. He said Modi would also address a joint session of Fijian Parliament."Modi is one of the most admired leaders of the world. It’s a privilege for Fiji to host him," said Karan.

audience of a billion people that’s really exciting,” Charlene said. The Fiji National University Aircraft engineering student who has been raising funds for the CWM’s children’s ward also aims to promote Fiji as the ideal tourist destination.“I want to show the world that Fiji has so much potential and so much to offer , it’s a beautiful country that people should come and visit and I will go out there with my dance , dress and showcase our culture, potential and I hope they see how much Fiji has to offer.”

Fiji airways Send three Families to Fiji In New Campaign

Fiji Airways is celebrating the warm nature of Fijian hospitality in a new brand campaign from Iris Worldwide Sydney which aims to capture the Fijian experience travellers have on board the airline. The campaign tells the story of three families who have recently travelled to and from Fiji after being nominated by friends and family in September as in need of a much-deserved “home-away-from-home” experience.CEO and managing director of Fiji Airways Stefan Pichler said: “Following our successful re-launch to Fiji Airways last year, we have revamped our marketing approach and have now included more of Fiji’s

people in the way we market our company and the country overseas.“As the national carrier, we want to show off what makes Fiji that special and unique as an experience. This brand position resonates well with the Fijian people because they live this experience everyday.“This also better aligns us with our aim of becoming a leading boutique airline which has a unique, personal touch.”The three campaign videos are hosted on the ‘Welcome to our Home’ The integrated campaign ‘Welcome to our home’ is led by digital, and is supported with social and PR in Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, USA and Fiji.

Fiji tax authority Cracks down On Illegal dVd Sales

The Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority has warned it will come down hard on those cheating Government coffers by illegally importing blank DVDs and CDs.This comes after a local company was found to be doing this.“The current fiscal duty on a blank DVD is $2. In addition, importers have to pay 10 per cent import excise duty and 15 per cent VAT on the total imports. All these duties and taxes are evaded through illegal imports,” says FRCA Chief Executive Officer Jitoko Tikolevu.Tikolevu says they are now investigating a company which has been importing blank DVDs and evading taxes.

“We have come across this company who is importing blank DVD’s and CD’s and allegedly selling it at a much cheaper price. DVD outlets should ask receipts and invoices upon purchase of blank DVD’s and CD’s. FRCA investigations have established that the company under investigation is not providing receipts or invoices relating to the sale,” says Tikolevu.“This is a clear breach of the Custom laws and uncovers the extent of duty evasion adopted by some companies,” Tikolevu said.FRCA investigations have established that the company under investigation is not providing receipts or invoices relating to DVD sales.

PM Opens Center For British army Families

A community hall for the benefit of all Fijians and their dependents who have served or currently serve in the British Armed Forces is now open. The new Royal British Legion Community Welfare Center was officially opened by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.British Prime Minister David Cameron played an important lead role in the set up of the center. As a result of deep historical ties and military cooperation between Fiji and Britain the building will provide much needed office space for two registered charity organizations; the Royal British Legion Fiji Branch and the British Families Association of Fiji. Both organizations are involved in caring for the welfare of the soldiers, their families many of whom remain here in Fiji.“There are currently around 1800 Fiji soldiers serving with the British regiment and their contribution is highly valued as we all know some Fijians serving in Britain have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defending the values we all share and for that they’ll

never be forgotten. I want to say as Prime Minister how much we value the work being done by all those involved to assist the families and communities of the fallen,” Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said.“They use it as a social center, a welfare center, they’re going to use if for family events. It’ll be run by the British Legion in Fiji but we hope it’ll create all kinds of possibilities to bring the community together and to do things together. ”The British Prime Minister David Cameron is also playing an important role in seeing the establishment of the center recently writing to Bainimarama as part of strengthening military relations.“I was especially pleased to hear that the British Prime Minister David Cameron has taken a personal interest in the center and its success. We look forward to continued support from the British Government.”“He was asking us when it’s going to finish , let me know when we will be sending the photographs and the speeches from the ceremony to his office to keep him updated.”

FRa Seeks approval Of $476 Million For Roads In 2015

The Fiji Roads Authority says it will be looking at approval on expenditure, at least in the order of what it had this year, around $476 million, in the 2015 Budget.FRA chief executive Neil Cook says it will be sufficient to continue ongoing programmes including construction projects already underway. However, at the end of the day, he concedes it will be government's

decision to make."Those are the decisions of government and we are working through our line ministry and with central funding agency to make sure there are programmes deliver that will deliver on government's objective as well as fitting with affordability consideration of government."The 2015 Budget will be delivered next Friday.

Court adjourns doctor's Case Over 2010 theft

The case of a Ba private doctor who allegedly received stolen medicine from a hospital attendant in 2010 has been adjourned to next Wednesday. And a magistrate court in Ba has given Dr Dur Samy's counsel until then to go through the agreed facts submitted by Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) and prepare a response.Samy, was charged by FICAC on October 4, 2010 for one count of receiving stolen goods.Appearing before Magistrate Mosese Naivalu, FICAC’s Acting State Counsel, Joseph Work informed the court that the matter had been adjourned twice and if this could be the last adjournment for Defence to respond, as the matter is listed for trial in the first week of December.

Defense Counsel, Ravneet Charan, assured the court he would go through the documents before the next mention. The matter has been adjourned to November 19, 2014 for mention for the final pre-trial conference. The court also extended Dr Samy's bail.Dur Samy is alleged to have dishonestly received 20 x 0.9 percent Sodium Chloride Batch Number 0145E46 and 22 x 0.3percent Sodium Chloride Batch Number 9282E4 valued at $73.82 on September 27, 2010, knowing or believing the property to be stolen from a Nemani Baleinamana.Baleinamana was a pharmacist attendant at the Lautoka Hospital also charged over the incident for theft. He was convicted on November 9, 2010 to 18 months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to one count of theft.

State Pays Out $2M For Compensation

Government and the private sector have so far paid out close to $2 million to workers as compensation. These compensation payouts is mostly over death and injury related cases at work places. This is also in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.“The direct and indirect cost for OHS in way back in 2006 when OHS reforms started was 3 percent of GDP. It’s about $70m direct and indirect cost of

accidents,” said Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour, Taito Waqa.Waqa says skilled mediators have also played a crucial role in resolving these compensation claims.“Some redress could be compensation for hurt feelings. Mediation is a relationship issue, also compensation for loss of dignity, all that is taken into account. When they negotiate for settlement in mediation, it could be financial, non-financial or both.”

Fiji Bus Operators Want State to Review Importation Rules

The Fiji Bus Operators Association has called on government to review the ban on importation of second hand trucks more than five years old.As part of its 2015 budget submission, Association president Virendra Kewal says such trucks are a good source for spare parts for buses.Kewal says the purchase of new and second hand spare parts are coming at a huge cost for the industry. The Association also proposed for a reduction in duty on the import of new bus tires and new fully-constructed buses.

Currently 32 percent import duty is charged for the importation of new tires.Other proposals made by the Association are a reduction of stamp duty on large loans from 1.75 per cent to 0.5 per cent.A review of third party insurance costs and a review of Quality Assurance Management System implemented by the Land Transport Authority.Kewel says while the Association welcomes QAMS in the bus industry, it comes with significant cost implications.

More Fijians to access Scholarship Scheme

The Tertiary Education Loan and Scholarship Scheme or TELS may be made more accessible for more Fijian students. This was part of the proposal by the TELS Board to the Education Minister on the major tertiary initiative.More than 14 thousand students benefited from the newly implemented Tertiary Education Loan and Scholarship scheme this year.Despite some early teething problems, the TELS Board says it has been implemented well after taking into account issues raised by students and parents.“The restriction in the number in a certain discipline. That is more to do with scholarships but with loans that’s where the toppers scheme is on 600 but there are more students who would be under the loan scheme that’s an area where we’re working on to make it easier and accessible to people,” said TELS Board Chairperson, Dixon Seeto.Allocated a budget of $52.5 million

in the last budget, the TELS board chairperson is optimistic the guidelines will change to make it easier and more accessible for students.“We have submitted a paper to the Minister about some of the suggestions that we may have had. At the end of the day government decides what is the budget, it was a sizeable budget for this year and I’m sure if we even continue with what we’re doing it’ll be quite an amount of budget,” Seeto said. And with the year coming to an end, current form six and seven students as well as those in tertiary will be able to plan for their future education as a road show on the scheme.“We actually starting with two schools, Rishikul Sanatan Secondary and Suva Grammar School and it’ll continue like this. The schedules and venues have been advertised and it is also on our website.”The road show on the Tertiary Education Loan and Scholarship Scheme will end on the 19th.

downsize Of British army May affect Fijian Soldiers

The ongoing downsizing of the British Army may affect a number of Fijian nationals serving in the British Army. The British High Commission says those affected are given the option of whether to take a package or choose to live in Britain.“The number of Fijians are going down slowly but not very quickly with natural wastage and monitoring people taking the package that’s being offered but I don’t anticipate it will change dramatically over the next few years perhaps go down slowly,” said British High Commissioner to Fiji, Roderick Drummond.

Meanwhile the British Government has commenced training for the RFMF with experts from Sandhurst Military College conducting the programme.“I wanted to get the Sandhurst instructors back here quickly to be able to give the same training that we give our own young officers so we can get back to that professional relationship that has served us well over the years.“We’ll be doing more with police training and we are looking at other areas where we can help with reforming public service, public enterprise. There are areas that Britain can help in and provide some expertise.”

In August she realised the relationship was over.“Don’t fall in love cause you will only lose EVERYTHING!” she wrote, before later revealing she’d lost $42,000 and her house. The online group is mainly women in relationships with Fijian men and Ms O’Brien Maw told them of how she was unsure what her partner was doing when she wasn’t there.“..when you come home to Aussie you really DONT know what they do when your not there. sad hey when we give them honesty and they just laugh at us in there lingo, even while we sit with then! How do we know what they saying?”She claimed she was sending money to him every two weeks for food and suspected he was spending it on his wife.

She said to one friend: “ ... yes there are true relationships there I just didn’t find the right one but don’t want one now. I just have to work out what my heart n head says. I don’t know how to now, I feel ugly, used, hurt, embarrassed, stupid etc.”And then: “It must be a tears day for me cause I can’t stop the tears from falling.”Ms O’Brien Maw purportedly told the group of how lonely she felt when she was home in Australia.“I feel the same when I come home to ... so LONELY. I lost my family n friends cause they could see what was happening ...She said she felt naive and went onto the Facebook page because she had no one else to speak to.“It’s really bad for someone to do extortion to innocent kind hearted people ... They take advantage of our kindness.”

It has been reported that Ms O’Brien Maw was in Fiji to reconcile with a man and that she had been staying with him.She was last seen on Thursday night at a party in Sigatoka close to where her body was found by a shocked farmer walking his dog.Farmer Etuate Senikau, 47, was on his way to a rugby match at Nasama Village, on the island of Viti Levu, when he made the gruesome discovery. It was the smell that first got his attention.“I was on my way to a shop at Nasama Village with my dog when suddenly my dog ran off into the bush,” he said.He was terrified when he then saw the feet of the decomposed body sticking out from the bushes. There was also a terrible smell.Mr Senikau said the body was covered with grass and could not be identified because the face was badly damaged.

Fiji police Commissioner Ben Groenewald has confirmed Ms O’Brien-Maw’s brother, Rodney Maw, identified her body on Tuesday. It’s believed Ms Maw was beaten so badly her brother could only identify her body by a distinctive tattoo.Commissioner Groenewald promised the Maw family a thorough investigation. He said Ms O’Brien Maw’s body had to be cremated “due to the extreme stage of putrefaction of the victim’s body”.However that has alarmed her family in Australia who are reportedly worried that happened too quickly and without proper investigation.A family member in Pine Lodge, near Shepparton in rural Victoria, told AAP they did not want to comment.Officials from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade are providing consular assistance to her family.

The Electoral Commission intends to recommend to Government that changes be made to our electoral laws.Electoral Commissioner Father David Arms revealed this at a USP post election panel analysis. Some changes Father Arms that will be recommended relate to the ballot paper and national candidates list after some confusion were experienced by voters during election day.“Section 52 , subsection 2 of the decree which forbids taking cards or pieces of

paper into the polling station should be modified to allow a single card or small piece of paper on which it can be written the name and number of the candidate, ” said Commissioner, Fijian Electoral Commission, Fr David Arms.“Party identification needs to be clear to voters, even if voters choice of candidates is not successful, the vote will still count for the party so the voters need to be fully aware of its party affiliation. Fun World Plaza Owner Pays Of Bank arrears, Saves Hotel

The owner of Fun World Plaza Hotel located on Nadi Back Road has made arrangements to clear up the loan arrears it had incurred with the Bank of Baroda. This has been confirmed by both the hotel owner, Shah Group of Companies from New Zealand and the Bank of Baroda. The hotel had accumulated bank arrears of more than $3.2 million as a result of not paying their loan for more than one and half years and therefore had been taken over by the Bank of Baroda on October 17.Bank of Baroda Nadi branch manager, Sudesh Shandil, said the director of the hotel had made arrangements to clear all the arrears including the principal amount of $3.2 million and interests.“The bank has received a lump sum amount last Friday so the entire operation could be given back,” Mr Shandil said.Further to this Mr Shandil said the management of the hotel has been granted a grace period till November 21 to clear the balance amount. But if for some unforeseen circumstances the management fails to clear the amount, Mr Shandil said the bank will take the receivership and look for interested buyers.

“We are hopeful that the management will pay off the balance which is relatively a small amount,” he said.Reopening specialsFun World Plaza Hotel general manager, Imraz Ali, said the owners liaised with the Bank of Baroda to make arrangements to clear the arrears so the hotel could bounce back into

operation.“We received the entire operation of the hotel last Saturday and we will reopen after the management struck a deal with the bank,” Mr Ali confirmed. The hotel will advertise reopening specials to build on their customers who were turned away over the past few weeks.

There should be no more delays in the processing of social welfare, says the Hon. Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Sofia Akbar. The Minister made these comments while chairing a public consultation on social welfare programs at Nakavika village in Namosi this week. The consultations provided the opportunity for the villagers to seek clarification on social welfare programs like Social Pension Scheme, Poverty Benefit Scheme, Care and Protection Program.“Through the consultations we have done in Labasa, Navua and Naitasiri, we have seen that there were some applications that had been pending for a year. We don’t want that, you have my word that when your applications come to our office, have allocated a time framework of maximum of six weeks of processing time, within which you will be informed of the outcome. “And in cases where people don’t meet the eligibility criteria, we gave other programs like the Welfare Graduation Program and the livelihood projects through which we will try to assist the individuals,” Mrs Akbar explained. The Ministry is also looking into the concerns of the recipients in rural and

maritime locations who are burdened with transport costs whilst accessing their monthly allowances.“The Ministry has plans to deliver the benefits right to our clients other then they having to spend money on transport to travel down to towns to access their allowances. This will apply to those who live in the most remote and rural locations, like Namosi. We are working with the turaga-ni-koros’ and the provincial councils to identify the areas that will need this service. The welfare allowances which the Ministry provides on a monthly basis, we want those to be spent on the welfare of your families and not in paying for the transport costs, which some of our clients are facing at the moment.“Similarly, for the Food Vouchers, we are looking at the option where the food packs that you need can be delivered to you on a monthly basis. This is so that you don’t have to spend money to travel to towns, unless you choose do to so, you will be given choices. This is why we are having these consultations, so we can work on the best ways to assist you,” Mrs Akbar said. She also informed that the monthly Social Pension Scheme would increase to $50 from January next year.

“The Ministry encourages those who are 70 years and over, with no form of superannuation funds like FNPF or after care fund to apply for the Social Pension Scheme. The Pension will increase from $30 to $50 from next year and comes July, those who are 68 years old will also qualify for this $50 pension,” Mrs Akbar said.Currently, the Ministry is reaching out

to 17,000 people through its Poverty Benefiting Scheme, with a total of 2211 recipients for the Care and Protection Program. The Social Pension Scheme has a total of 11,194 recipients and with more than 40,000 beneficiaries for the government’s Bus Fare Concession. Likewise, 1003 pregnant mothers in rural areas are also benefiting from the government’s Expanded Food Voucher Program.

St Joseph's Secondary School Joins Community

Policing Program THE second phase of the community policing program involving schools in the Central Division started which involved placing of billboards in nine schools that are part of the program.St Joseph's Secondary School received its billboard which indicated that the school now had set up a policing community within the school which would act as eyes and ears on the ground reporting any suspicious activity to police.Community Policing Commanding Officer in the Central Division Superintendent Tevita Waqabaca said the program now gave students a sense of ownership and pride in making the community crime free."What we are doing now is training the

children to be disciplined and also on leadership skills which means that they can identify what is wrong and what needs to be reported on," SP Waqabaca said.SP Waqabaca said with the alarming trend of glue sniffing and students spending school hours in internet shops, there was a need to instill discipline in the lives of students."We are focused on changing the mind-sets of students from an early age and to teach these children that they should start building their future from a young age," SP Waqabaca said. The program was launched last week with Dudley High School being the first school to receive its Community Policing billboard followed by St Joseph's Secondary School.

Regional Conference For Women In Business

This month, the Pacific Islands Private Sector Organisation (PIPSO), will be bringing regional women together for the second Pacific Women in Business conference. The event will be held from November 26 to 28 at the Sheraton Fiji Resort on Denarau Island in Nadi. The theme for the event is “Building Women Entrepreneurs – Building Nations.”PIPSO chief executive, Mereia Volavola, said through the conference, PIPSO hopes businesswomen can learn more from each other. She said they also hope more established businesswomen will be able to share key learning and advice to up-and-coming women in business.“Women are a significant entrepreneurial force whose contributions to local, national and global economies are far reaching,” she said.“While there has been a positive trend, women entrepreneurs continue to face challenges and diminished

opportunities further constraining women’s participation in business.”SponsorshipWestpac has boosted PIPSO’s efforts by giving a sponsorship of $50,000 for the conference and therefore becoming the Gold Sponsor. The partnership agreement reinforces both agencies’ ongoing work to promote and enhance women’s participation in business.Under the agreement, Westpac will also take the opportunity to share banking perspectives to the women in business, about access to finance and access to information and resources for sustainable business ventures.Eseta Nadakuitavuki, Westpac’s manager Women’s Markets, said: “Westpac will endeavour to work with women who are aspiring to start up business ventures or further their business interests.“Due to the regional nature of the event, Westpac is lending its broader support to the event.”

Failed Bridgecorp Fiji Resort Officially Restarts

A failed Fiji resort development that jailed fraudster Rod Petricevic and other Bridgecorp directors poured $106 million has been officially restarted by the island's nation's prime minister.Fiji leader Frank Bainimarama official launched the Momi Bay redevelopment project, saying the venture was "effectively killed off by mismanagement".The half-finished Momi Bay resort was the largest property project Bridgecorp had put money towards and in 2006 was to have been the biggest resort development in Fiji and the South Pacific. The project was running behind schedule and had run into trouble well before Bridgecorp collapsed in July 2007, owing $459 million to 14,500 investors.Five Bridgecorp directors were later found guilty of misleading investors, with Petricevic and CFO Rob Roest also being convicted for fraud. In 2009 the Fijian military regime seized Momi Bay against the wishes of Bridgecorp receivers in an effort to stem the losses of the Fiji National

Provident Fund (FNPF), which had a $60 million exposure to Momi.Bainimarama announced in 2012 that the FNPF will invest around $150 million (NZ$103 million) to complete the first stage of the development.Fletcher Building is a construction partner for the project, the Fiji PM said. The resort, which the politician said will generate 400 jobs during construction and another 500 when open, will be operated by global hospitality chain, Marriott."In 2016, the new five star Resort - 250 guest rooms including some spectacular over-water bungalows - will open for business, here in Momi," he said."We have closed a chapter in which the Momi Bay project...had come to symbolise Fiji's arrested development," he said."Today, we draw a line under that failure and celebrate a remarkable turnaround in the fortunes of this project, just as we celebrate the revival of the fortunes of our nation - a booming economy and our new and vibrant democracy," Bainimarama said.

One doctor For 90 PatientsMINISTER for Health Jone Usamate has raised his concerns on the number of patients being seen by one doctor at various hospitals in the country.During his hospital visitations late last month, Mr Usamate realised the need to increase doctors in the country and to improve medical services."I have visited hospitals where doctors see 90 patients per day and for us at the ministry, 90 patients per day for a doctor is too much," Mr Usamate said."I have even seen pharmacists operating in very cramped conditions and they do not get their medicine supply on time."I have noticed many health workers working in very poor conditions and

one of the things that we really need in this country is doctors and health workers who can provide the best service to people."Mr Usamate said the ministry needed good facilities for doctors and health workers and the Government had made a commitment to look after health facilities in the country."There is a need for workers in this ministry to really care for improving their service delivery and we hope to strengthen health management systems too."Our staff members need to know how to treat our customers and they will be rewarded on their service performance."

Pay discrepancies For Latecomers, audit Reveals

THE Auditor-General's review of payroll records of the Foreign Ministry in 2013 revealed salaries of staff members who continued to arrive late to work by more than one hour in a month were not deducted. The audit noted the ministry failed to provide late arrival return for the third and fourth quarter of the financial year December 31, 2013.The Auditor-General's report said excessive late arrivals to work may had an effect on the work performance of the officers and the productivity of the ministry. The report further explained if the accumulated absence in a month exceeds one hour, the monetary equivalent should be deducted from the officer's salary. It said the waiver for exemption depending on the circumstances of late arrival or early departure rested only on the permanent secretaries and heads of ministries. The Auditor-General recommended

late arrivals should be recorded from the relevant officers and the ministry should ensure the late arrival returns for all the payments were prepared. It further recommended supervision of staff members should be strengthened to avoid continuous late arrivals. In response, management said the ministry was in the process of implementing the deduction of salaries and wages from staff members. The management also stated some of the officers were required to work late because of pressing work commitments but this was not recognised for those who were not entitled to be paid overtime. The management further commented in terms of professionalism, fairness and natural justice, the ministry was looking at ways and means to ensure the system does not unnecessarily punish the committed and hardworking officers in the process.

Youths Reminded Of Selfless Sacrifice On Remembrance day

Remembrance Day was marked in honour of those who sacrificed their lives during the two World Wars.Tuesday was also about remembering the suffering and loss that our pioneering servicemen endured particularly during the Solomons and Malayan campaign in the 1940′s.It’s the haunting sound at this morning’s dawn service that has served as a timely reminder of the sacrifices made over six decades ago. While their numbers continue to reduce every year, their legacy remains.“The younger generation ought to know the sacrifice their great grandfather many years ago have to made and some pay the ulimate price they live in tough condition to ensure we live in peace,”

said Ex-Servicemen Association President, Ratu Peni Volavola. The message to our younger generation is simple – don’t take anything for granted.“The generation that we are living now today we should know that it was not easily given to us as we owed this peaceful nation to the sacrifice of those patriotic Fijians.”Volavola says it is also time their legacy is reflected permanently in our education system.“I think it is about time for the schools to take ownership of this now and include it to the school curriculum.”Government is already planning for the 14th of December to mark 100 years since World War One.

Seasonal Workers In January 2015The Seasonal Workers Programme (SWP) will start in January next year.Minister for Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuoabola is expected to sign the relevant memorandum of understanding (MOU) with New Zealand’s Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully on November 22.Ratu Inoke said: “I hope to sign the MOU with the NZ Foreign Minister McCully on Saturday, 22nd November and the first lot will go to New Zealand in January 2015.”Because of the change in government in December 2006, New Zealand

excluded Fiji from its Recognised Seasonal Employee policy and NZ employers were unable to source seasonal labourers from here. Fiji workers were also excluded from this same programme in Australia. However, Ratu Inoke said both countries had lifted this sanction after the successful September general elections. In her recent to Fiji, Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop invited Fiji to join its seasonal workers programme.Ratu Inoke said he was hopeful to sign

a MOU with Australia as well.“The MOU is still being worked on and it will be signed as soon as it is ready. Hopefully it will also start in Jan 2015.”When signed, this document would establish a commitment by the governments of Australia and Fiji to establish and maintain labour sending and receiving arrangements under

the Seasonal Worker Programme that will deliver benefits to the citizens of Fiji and assist Australian employers to meet their seasonal demand for labour.Once these steps are completed, the Fijian Government will provide advice about how Fijian citizens can apply to participate in the Seasonal Workers Programme.

91,023 Voters didn’t Vote: FeO

The Final Report by the Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem for the 2014 general election shows that 91,023 registered voters did not vote. The report highlighted that 84.6 per cent of the 591,101 registered voters voted, this was 500,078.Of this 500,078 that cast their ballots, 3,714 votes were invalid.Despite this significant number of registered voters that did not vote, Saneem praised the system that was used because of the low number of invalid votes he said.“The low number of invalid votes amongst those voting demonstrates the strength of the new electoral system, which gives every registered voter a single vote in a multimember national constituency,” Saneem stated in his

report.Of this registered voters the Central division had 247,393, Western division had 223,867, the Northern division had 89,212, the Eastern division had 25,121and registered voters from overseas were 5,508.The FEO sent out 12,190 postal ballots, only 7,948 were received and on the 26th of September, DHL returned 2,219 satchels of which 480 were categorized as “received too late” and 1,739 as “undelivered”“Other issues arose with the interface between DHL and the FEO database which caused confusion in the exact delivery address for the Postal Vote Pack. When this was realized, counter measures were immediately put in place.”

Fiji China Relations Remain Firm

Fiji and China relations have never been better. With the People’s Republic of China’s President due to visit Fiji at the end of this month, it seems bilateral ties will now flourish to a new level which can open up doors to more trade possibilities.China’s Financial Hub and its largest City, Shanghai opened its doors to the Fiji Consulate recently.Since then, our local representatives there have been working tirelessly to establish our footprint in a city where 24 million Chinese alone resides. It’s a huge task for Fiji’s Consul General Neumi Leweni as he taps into one of the world’s financial hubs.“Because it’s quite different from the Embassy at Beijing; Consulates deal mostly with people to people relationship, and also the trade and tourism where as in the embassy, its more on government to government,” said Fiji’s Consul General to Shanghai,

China, Neumi Leweni.Leweni says bilateral and political ties with China have never been stronger.“We’ll we’ve had visit this year by the Prime Minister, they had bilateral talks with the President of the Peoples Republic of China, also the president when visited Nanjing for the opening of the youth Olympics and after that we had bilateral talks with the President also.”Leweni says these high profile visits reflects that growing bond which is once again being reinforced by the Chinese Presidents visit later next week.“Well the visit of our President and Prime Minister and the visit of the Peoples Republic of China’s president to Fiji is Indicative of the relationship between the two countries.”Leweni says as the financial heart of China, our consulate there is well placed to unleash that huge potential from the world’s fastest growing economy.

Information Sharing to Strengthen Border Control

MeasuresThe signing of a Memorandum of Understanding this week between the Department of Immigration and the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji will strengthen control measures at all of Fiji’s ports of entry. This week the two agencies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to allow sharing of information and cooperation to bring about closer cooperation and consistency in enhancing border security and safety in Fiji. The signing took place at the AFL Academy Training Room in Nadi between the BAF executive chairman Mr Xavier Riyaz Khan and the Department of Immigration director Mr Nemani Vuniwaqa. BAF Executive Chairman Mr Khan said monitoring border control was very critical, adding that even without an MOU in place both organisations have been working closely together in sharing information and collaborating in various integrated activities. “The signing of the MOU is a huge milestone for BAF as it will further strengthen Biosecurity Authority of Fiji’s efforts in improving the

livelihoods of individual Fijians,” he said. Under the MOU, both agencies will also share facilities, resources and common information as well as present a unified approach to compliance and enforcement of biosecurity and DOI legislation. He added the benefits also extend to building opportunities for staff training and other capacity building activities. “Some benefits for BAF under this MOU will be immediate listing of passengers on the controversial list once found breaching Biosecurity regulations. This will further enhance enforcement of Biosecurity regulations at borders,” Mr Khan said. “The MOU with the SOP will help BAF and DOI to work together for safety, security and protection of Fiji and its flora and fauna. In addition, information sharing by both agencies will improve the implementation of respective legislations which will benefit Fiji as a whole nation.” Mr Vuniwaqa said this new collaboration would lead to improved and better coordinated results in border protection.

World Bank to Provide 50M uSd Loan to Fiji

The World Bank together with the Asian Development bank is set to give Fiji 50million USD loan.World Bank Country Director, Franz-Drees Gross told Radio New Zealand that this loan should allow Government to work on the backlogs that they have accumulated over the years in regards to development.“Another area of priority, very clearly, was infrastructure. So we'll be providing a loan of 50 million dollars, we'll be financing together with the Asian Development Bank and try to basically help the government address the backlog in road maintenance that's basically been accumulated over the

last five or six years when Fiji had less resources,” Gross said.Gross highlighted that Fiji has a broad area of priority with poverty alleviation being the first.“I think we look forward to a very productive partnership with Fiji, I think there's a lot of eagerness from the government to re-engage with us, we're certainly eager to provide them with good service and I think they're a sophisticated country and I think we can do a lot of very good things,” he said.Fiji has not accessed funding from the World Bank Group since the 1990's, Gross said this was for a variety of reasons but would not elaborate.

Family Lived With Corpse Hidden In Basement

The family of a convicted murderer lived with a man's corpse in their basement freezer for nearly a year and a half, authorities say.Jean Guerin, 48, pleaded guilty Monday to conspiracy to commit murder.Court heard Eric Viel, 42, came to Guerin's home on Dec. 22, 2009, to buy a kilogram of cocaine and was never seen again. His family reported him missing in January 2010.Police found Viel's body in May 2011 in a freezer in the basement of Guerin's home in Sainte-Julienne, Que., where he lived with his wife and children. Guerin had asked a friend to remove the freezer, but the friend instead went to police.Viel had been killed with a single bullet to the head.

At the time his body was discovered, Guerin was already serving a life sentence for a January 2010 murder at his home.Police investigating the scene for that crime had no idea Viel's body was also there.Police charged Guerin with accessory after the fact and indignity to a human body.A judge sentenced Guerin Monday to 10 years in prison, which he will serve concurrently with his life sentence.Guerin's wife, Patricia Noel, was also charged in the case. On Monday the Crown dropped charges including accessory after the fact and indignity to a human body.Police believe there were other accomplices but haven't identified them.

arctic Blast Hits Canada and uS

Parts of Canada and the US Midwest have been getting their first blast of winter, sending temperatures plummeting by as much as 22C (40F) in days. The sharply cooler temperatures are a result of frigid air pushed in by a powerful storm that hit Alaska with hurricane-force winds.Parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan saw over a foot of snow overnight on Monday. And more than 150 flights were cancelled at the Minneapolis airport.Michigan's Upper Peninsula was expecting as much as another two feet of snow after accumulating more than a foot on Monday.National Weather Service meteorologist Justin Titus said roads on the peninsula were in a "very poor condition" with two to three inches of snow falling an hour on Tuesday morning. In Minnesota, state police said at least two people were killed in accidents on

icy roads.Snowy roads were blamed for a Wisconsin school bus crash that sent two adults to hospital, according to a local broadcaster. Terri Sommerfeld, a clerk at Ace Hardware in Webster, Wisconsin, said the store had sold six or seven snow-blowers in two days, the same amount they sell in a typical winter. The unseasonably cold temperatures are expected to move further east on Wednesday. What made this chill more of a shock was the way it struck so quickly after warm autumn weather.David Phillips, a climatologist for Environment Canada, says Calgary experienced its warmest October for 50 years. The average temperature was 8.3C and it's usually 5.2C.Last Saturday afternoon, he said, Calgary was 14.4C but it dropped 32 degrees in the next 36 hours.

Stephen Harper Now 6th Longest-Serving PM In History

During their first weeks in office back in 2006, many Conservatives thought Stephen Harper would be lucky to last a year as prime minister. They figured the Liberals would quickly regroup, force an election, and put Harper and the Tories right back on the opposition benches. In fact, Harper's swearing-in on Feb. 6, 2006, began a decade of electoral darkness for the Liberals and started a remarkable run for Harper. On Thursday, Harper marked his 3,203rd day in office, eclipsing the length of time Brian Mulroney spent as prime minister. That puts Harper sixth in length of service among our 22 prime ministers.Last week he surpassed Robert Borden, the Conservative who led Canada through the First World War, which

means only one other Conservative is ahead of Harper on the list. His name was Macdonald.Harper will have to be prime minister through the winter of 2025 if he wants to pass Sir John A's 6,943 days in office. To get to No. 1 and beat William Lyon Mackenzie King's record of 7,837 days in office, Harper would have to be prime minister in the summer of 2027. He'd be 68-years-old and would need to win at least three more general elections. But to move from No. 6 on the list to No. 5, Harper has only to win one more general election, scheduled for next October. If he does that, he'll surpass Jean Chretien's 3,689 days in office on March 15, 2016.

Laundry Pods Pose Serious Risk to Young Children, Study Says

A new study says laundry pods — those colourful, convenient single-use packages of detergent — pose a serious poisoning risk to young children. The risk is so serious that the study's authors recommend that families with children under the age of four avoid buying laundry pods altogether and stick with the old-fashioned liquid or powder. The study, published in the journal Pediatrics, looked at data from the National Poison Data System in the U.S.It found 17,230 children under the age of six had some kind of unhealthy exposure to laundry detergent pods in 2012-2013."That's about one an hour," says Dr. Marcel Casavant, one of the study's authors, who says about half of those children got sick. "Many with vomiting, a number with trouble breathing, a number with trouble staying awake. We found some skin injuries, some eye injuries, some burns to these children," says Casavant."A number of these children were having so much trouble breathing, they had to have a tube put into their windpipe and then be connected to a ventilator."there were two deaths.Kids think they're candyTwo-thirds of those exposed were one- and two-year-olds. Most exposure involved ingestion, which accounted for 79.7 per cent of the cases."These have bright colours, they have pretty patterns. When you feel them, they're soft and squishy. If I were a child, it would look like the perfect item to put into my mouth," says Casavant. But they aren't just putting the pods in their mouths. They're getting the detergent in their eyes. The study cited Canadian reports that

described corneal abrasions and burns when ocular exposure occurs. From March 2012 to April 2013, the monthly number of exposures increased by 645.3 per cent. Casavant says the beginning of that period roughly coincides with when laundry pods were first introduced in the U.S.Stored within reachAnother reason for the high number of exposures, the study found, relates to the incorrect storage of the pods. They're often kept in a low, unlocked kitchen or bathroom cabinet. A caregiver also may have left the open pod container within reach of a child while momentarily distracted. Packaging is a major concern of the study authors."A number of these [pods] are sold in packages that are see-through, so a child can see how pretty the product is inside," says Casavant. "Some were sold in clear plastic baggies, some were sold in clear plastic tubs or bins, and many of these did not have child-resistant closures."One company makes changesFurther proof of the power of packaging, the study found, came in the spring of 2013.Proctor & Gamble, whose Tide Pods have helped the company garner the largest market share, responded to reports of child injuries by introducing opaque packaging. P&G also added a warning label and latches to its laundry pod container. The timing of those changes roughly correspond with a 25 per cent drop in child exposures. Increased public awareness and media coverage following the August 2013 death of a toddler may have also contributed to the decline in exposures, the study notes.

Indian Woman Paraded Naked On donkey

A woman in northern India has been stripped naked and paraded on a donkey on the orders of village elders after being accused of killing her nephew.

The village council in Rajsamand district in Rajasthan state also ordered the 45-year-old woman's face to be blackened. Her nephew's family said she killed

The 45-year-old woman was accused of killing her nephew

him. Police have arrested 39 people.Orders given by village councils - panchayats - carry no legal weight but are widely respected in rural areas.Rajasthan's principal secretary for rural development, Shreemat Pandey, told the BBC it was "completely illegal" for the panchayat to hand down such a punishment. Senior police official Shweta Dhankhad told BBC Hindi that on November 2, a 45-year-old man, Vardi Singh, killed himself in Thurawad village. Three days after his funeral was held, his wife and some other relatives went to the police alleging that Mr Singh had been killed by his aunt.Last Saturday night the family approached the village council which agreed that the aunt was guilty of murder. On the council's order, the woman's head was shaved and her face was blackened with coal dust, she was stripped naked and taken around the village on a donkey."It's a shameful incident that a woman was treated so badly on orders from the village council," Ms Dhankhad said. "Initially, she was even afraid to talk about what had happened to her but

after the police and officials from the social welfare department arrived, she was able to feel a little safe and narrate her ordeal." Correspondents say women are routinely stripped and paraded naked in rural India in order to punish and humiliate them. In October, a woman in the eastern state of Jharkhand was stripped and paraded naked before several family members by her in-laws who wanted a big dowry from her.In July, a 60-year-old woman was beaten, stripped and tied to an electricity pole in a village in the eastern state of Orissa after local people accused her of being a witch. In January 2012, some upper-caste men in Maharashtra state beat, stripped and paraded naked a low-caste Dalit woman because her son had eloped with an upper-caste girl. Most of these incidents of public shaming take place in remote villages and the victims, almost always from economically and socially disadvantaged sections, have no alternative but to continue to live in the communities where they were humiliated.

Oil tycoon to Pay ex-Wife Record-Setting $1 Billion

divorce SettlementAn oil executive has been ordered to pay nearly $1 billion to his ex-wife, in one of the largest U.S. divorce judgments in history.Harold Hamm, the chief executive of Continental Resources, who is worth an estimated $14 billion, must pay his former wife Sue Ann Hamm a total of $995.5 million, following a ruling by an Oklahoma judge.Mr. Hamm, whose company owns one million acres in North Dakota’s Bakken oilfield, is thought to have access to

more oil underground than any other American. Mr. Hamm, 68, has two daughters with his wife, to whom he was married for more than 25 years. The couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement.Although the award could make Ms. Hamm, 58, one of the 100 wealthiest women in the U.S., according to Forbes’ rankings, it is far smaller than the amount her lawyers sought and does not require Mr. Hamm to sell shares in Continental. He holds a 68% stake in the firm.

28-Year-Old Woman Kills Children, attempts Suicide

A 28-year-old woman killed her two daughters, aged five and three, by pushing them into a water sump in Sholinganallur Housing Board Colony and attempted to kill herself. Police said the woman Poonam, 28, had a quarrel with her husband Amit Kumar Yadav, 30, a software engineer, attempted suicide after drowning her children. Her attempts failed but she did not tell police that she had killed the girls until they grilled her. Police arrested her on the charges of murder. Poonam and Yadav, both from Rajasthan, were living in the TNHB quarters for the last two years. The couple had frequent quarrels over his drinking, neighbours told police. They had come from Delhi after attending a family function last Saturday night and the couple quarreled on immediately. She then decided to end her life. Her husband went to sleep after quarrel. Poonam came out of the apartment

with the children, went down to the ground floor and pushed her daughters into the sump which had six feet of water. She jumped in after them but the water was too low to kill herself in. She returned to the apartment and tried to hang herself but failed. When he woke up Yadav found the girls missing and began searching for them. Poonam did not tell him what she had done. He called Semmenchery police who searched for the couple's daughters and then began questioning Poonam. She confessed to the crime only after police fished out the bodies of the children from the sump on Sunday afternoon. "Amit did not sleep all night. In the morning, he found his daughters missing as it was too early for them to go out and play," said an investigating officer. Police are interrogating the woman to find out why she killed the children and attempted suicide.

thirteen Indian Women die after Sterilisation Surgery at Family Planning Camp In Chhattisgarh

Thirteen women have died in central India and dozens more are in hospital in a critical condition following a government-run mass sterilisation. Local media in India reported 83 women volunteered to have sterilisation surgery at a family planning camp organised in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh last weekend. Authorities in Chhattisgarh said that many of the more than 80 women who had the sterilisation surgery fell ill shortly afterwards. He said the government doctors who had performed the surgeries were experienced in the procedure.Police have detained a doctor who

performed mass sterilisation surgeries. R.K Gupta was detained for questioning late Wednesday in Chhattisgarh state amid mounting anger over the surgeries conducted at a health camp.In just five hours, the doctor operated on 83 women who were paid 1,400 rupees ($26) under a government-run sterilisation scheme to reduce population growth."He has been taken into custody. He will be produced in the court. He is likely to be arrested soon after," Mr Deo said.He added that police were planning to seize equipment used during the surgeries amid fears that they were infected before the operations were carried out.The victims suffered vomiting and a dramatic fall in blood pressure after undergoing laparoscopic sterilisation, a process in which the fallopian tubes are blocked.Sterilisation is one of the most popular methods of family planning in India, and many state governments organise mass camps where rural women can undergo the usually straightforward procedure.Although the surgery is voluntary, rights groups say the target-driven nature of the program has led to women being coerced into being sterilised,

often in inadequate medical facilities.Under pressure to meet targets, some local governments offer additional incentives such as cars and electrical goods.Governments in India often offer incentives including cash or household goods to men and women volunteering for sterilisation, in an effort to try to control the country's population of

more than 1 billion. The women are often paid about $25 to have the surgery, a significant amount of money for many of India's rural poor.Health workers also get about $3.25 for bringing a woman to the camp.More than 40 million sterilisations were performed in 2013-14, according to the government.

Wife Commits Suicide after Husband tortures For

Worshipping Hindu godsWhat was supposed to be a convergence of faith in an inter-religious marriage turned tragic after the wife committed suicide. The husband had allegedly tortured her as she insisted on worshipping Hindu gods. Arrested subsequently on the charge of abetting suicide, a city court on Thursday has quashed his bail plea. Antony Joseph, 32, a lift operator in a jewelry shop was in a relationship with Preethi (name changed) for several years. They got married in July 2007 with the consent of their parents. The wedding was conducted with Hindu rituals at Tirupati temple and then with Christian faith at San Thome Church. On Diwali (October 22) Preethi was found hanging at the couple's house in Saligramam. Her father, Thiyagrajan, then lodged a complaint stating Joseph often tortured her as he was against Hindu rituals of worship. The police arrested Joseph after registering a case under section 306 (abetting the commission of suicide).

Seeking bail, Joseph filed a petition before the principal sessions court. He said Preethi, an emotional and sensitive woman, often fought over petty issues. Few days before Diwali, they had a quarrel over purchases for the festival. Following this Preethi had gone to stay with her parents. She returned on Diwali looking tensed and flustered. Before he left for work, she again had a heated argument with him. Around 6.30pm, Preethi called him and told she was going to commit suicide, said Joseph. When Joseph reached the house, he found her hanging from a saree. Preethi was taken to a hospital where she was declared dead, he said. When the matter came up for hearing last Thursday, city public prosecutor, M L Jegan opposed the bail plea stating the matter was in the preliminary stage of investigation. Principal sessions Judge N Audinathan rejected the bail application.

Fatty Liver disease: Common SymptomsAccording to doctors, a fatty liver isn’t damaging to the body on its own accord. However, the accumulation of excessive fatty tissue can lead to severe liver damage—including inflammation and scarring.A fatty liver occurs when you take in more fat and calories than your liver can process. As a result, simple fats build up in the liver cells, making the liver prone to damage. The most common reason for the development of fatty liver disease is obesity—with obese individuals increasing their chances of developing the condition by about 75-percent. Although a fatty diet and weight gain is the main culprit, diabetes (or insulin resistance), hyperlipidemia (or elevated lipids in the blood), and alcohol abuse (with 90 to 100-percent of binge drinkers contracting fatty livers) will also increase the chances. Here are the ten most common symptoms of fatty liver disease:1. FatigueIf any organ in our bodies becomes dysfunctional, in this case the liver, the body will try to protect itself and compensate by pumping excess blood to the organ, which often leads to unexplained weakness, confusion, impaired judgment, trouble concentrating, severe energy loss, and a

sudden inability to participate in social activities that were once enjoyed.2. ObesityDoctors attest that carrying around a lot of excess weight will increase your risk of fatty liver disease by a whopping 75-percent. In addition, the individuals most prone to the condition are in middle-age, which means if you’re overweight and in your mid-40s, it’s in your best interest to adopt a healthier diet and get some regular exercise in effort to shed unwanted fat cells.3. geneticsHeredity, something that’s passed down from parent to child, is often a primary indicator of future health problems. For instance, if a biological parent or grandparent was affected by liver disease, children and grandchildren of that individual may also be stricken with the condition as well. In the case of liver disease, studies show the individual may be prone to obesity or alcoholism, or be born with low levels of liver enzymes, which are involved in the metabolism of fats and alcohol.4. JaundiceJaundice, a condition that shows itself in yellowing of the skin and in the whites of the eyes is a common sign of liver disease. Jaundice is caused when bile flow from the liver is blocked,

which brings out itchy, tiny yellow bumps around the eyelids and on the skin’s surface.5. urine ColorOftentimes, if jaundice (a yellowing of the skin and in the whites of the eyes) develops, you will also notice changes in the color of your urine, which will appear dark. When you defecate, you may also notice differences, with your stool becoming whitish or clay-colored, and omitting a really foul odor.6. Skin ChangesIn addition to skin changes due to jaundice, you may notice patchy skin and discoloration in the neck area (due to swollen glands) and under the arms once liver failure sets in. Additional skin alterations may show themselves in broken blood vessels on the face, or spider veins on the chest, back, and shoulders. The hands can also be affected, with palms turning red and nail beds turning white with enlarged fingertips.7. abdominal PainAbdominal pain may indicate liver disease or liver failure. You’ll experience the discomfort in the center or right upper portion of the abdomen, which may indicate internal bleeding. This may cause vomiting with tinges of blood occurs if blood vessels within the

gastrointestinal tract become inflamed and rupture, and you may also notice blood in your stool.8. No SymptomsFatty liver disease is often called a silent killer - meaning it shows almost no symptoms, particularly in the beginning stages. However, should the disease be allowed to advance untreated over a number of years, with no signs, symptoms, or complications while fat accumulates, the liver will become inflamed and scarring will occur on the organ’s surface. Eventually, untreated fatty liver disease can lead to liver failure.9. engorged abdomenAn engorged abdomen, a condition called Ascites, which occurs due to fluid retention in the abdomen and liver, will occur with the onset of severe liver disease. Ascites leads to an engorged, tight abdomen and a navel that appears pushed out due to fluid retention. It can also cause breathing challenges due to severe pressure on the internal organs.10. Muscle WastingPeople with advanced liver disease will often develop muscle wasting, or another associated condition called Dupuytren’s Contracture, in which the tendons in the hands shrink, the fingers curl, and muscle tremors (or uncontrolled shaking) set in.

Naturally Stress Reducing Foods

The foods we eat not just nourish our physical body but our mind too. Stress is a part and parcel of life and everybody faces varied levels of stress at almost every phase in their lives. These super foods are replete with numerous nutrients and vitamins that help the brain cope with our daily activity which demands varied levels of effort. It goes without saying that these foods have impressive positive influences on our physical body as well. Here are some foods that are reducing stress naturally.Naturally stress reducing foods are:1.Milk: Apart from coffee and tea doing their bit, milk plays an equally important- perhaps a greater role as far stress relief goes. Milk is rich in antioxidants and vitamins. It contains vitamins B2, B12, calcium and proteins, all of which work towards relieving stress.2.Almonds: Here is something you can do when you are stressed- begin munching on those almonds. Almonds, although high in fat, mostly contain

unsaturated fat. They are rich in magnesium and zinc too, apart from a rich composition of Vitamins B and E.3.Berries: Berries are supremely rich in Vitamin C, a vitamin linked to fighting stress and bringing down stress levels in humans. Blueberries are the most effective in this regard and are incredible foods for stress relief.4.Cereals: Cereals are rich in folic acid and Vitamins. A morning cereal phenomenally works towards stress relief.5.Asparagus: Depression and anxiety are triggered due to low levels of folic acid in the body. If there is one kind of food that boosts folic acid levels, it has to be asparagus. The folic acid rich food is impressive as far as ensuring mental health is concerned.6.Avocados: Vitamin B is highly essential for mental health and overall health of nerves. Avocados are extremely rich sources of Vitamin B. Eating the daily will indubitably reduce unnecessary stress. These are the foods that are reducing stress.

How COCO Reverses age-Related Memory decline

In a new study, scientists have discovered how dietary cocoa flavanols, the naturally occurring bioactives found in cocoa, reverse age-related memory decline in healthy older people. The study led by Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) scientists, provided the first direct evidence that one component of age-related memory decline in humans was caused by changes in a specific region of the brain and that such a form of memory decline could be improved by a dietary intervention.Previous work had shown that changes in a specific part of the brain-the dentate gyrus-were associated with age-related memory decline. To see if the dentate gyrus was the source of age-related memory decline in humans, senior author Dr. Scott A. Small and his colleagues tested whether compounds called cocoa flavanols could improve the function of this brain region and improve memory. Flavanols extracted from cocoa beans had previously been found to improve neuronal connections in the dentate gyrus of mice.In the CUMC study, 37 healthy volunteers, ages 50 to 69, were randomized to receive either a high-flavanol diet (900 mg of flavanols a day) or a low-flavanol diet (10 mg of flavanols a day) for three months. Brain imaging and memory tests were administered to each participant before and after the study. The brain imaging measured blood volume in the dentate

gyrus, a measure of metabolism, and the memory test involved a 20-minute pattern-recognition exercise designed to evaluate a type of memory controlled by the dentate gyrus. The high-flavanol group also performed significantly better on the memory test. Dr. Small said that if a participant had the memory of a typical 60-year-old at the beginning of the study, after three months that person on average had the memory of a typical 30- or 40-year-old. He cautioned, however, that the findings needed to be replicated in a larger study. Flavanols are also found naturally in tea leaves and in certain fruits and vegetables, but the overall amounts, as well as the specific forms and mixtures, vary widely. The precise formulation used in the CUMC study had also been shown to improve cardiovascular health. Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston recently launched an NIH-funded study of 18,000 men and women to see whether flavanols can help prevent heart attacks and strokes. The researchers pointed out that the product used in the study is not the same as chocolate, and they caution against an increase in chocolate consumption in an attempt to gain this effect. In the study, the researchers were unable to assess whether exercise had an effect on memory or on dentate gyrus activity.

Child allowanceAn allowance can be a great way to teach kids money management skills. With an allowance, your child can learn how to make decisions, deal with limited resources, and understand the benefits of saving and charitable giving. There's no single correct way to handle allowance. As you decide when to start, how much to give, and whether you want to link the allowance to chores, it's important to make choices that fit your family.Starting an allowanceNo particular age is best for every kid, but consider starting an allowance by the time a child is 10 years old. By then, most kids have had experience making thoughtful spending decisions but still look to parents for guidance. How much allowance should you give? It's depends on your financial situation and what kind of commitment you feel that you can comfortably keep. Experts generally recommend that kids get 50 cents to $1 per week for every year of their age — $3.50 to $7 for a 7-year-old, for example.Regardless of how much you choose, give the allowance regularly and increase the amount as your child gets older.allowance and ChoresShould an allowance be tied to chores? Again, it's a personal choice. Some experts think that it's important to make this connection so that kids learn the relationship between work and pay. Others say that kids should have a responsibility to help with housework, above and beyond any financial incentive.Ultimately, you must decide what works best for you. Whatever you decide, be sure that all parties understand the arrangement. If you give an allowance for doing housework, make sure that your kids understand what their responsibilities

are and the consequences of not doing them. You might want to involve them in choosing the chores, and then keep a chart posted to remind them what needs to be done. It's important to be consistent. Following through on your promise to give a regular allowance sets a good example for your kids and is incentive for them to honor their end of the bargain. If you don't keep up with the allowance, they might lose that incentive and stop doing the chores.using an allowanceHow should kids spend their allowance? It's a good to have them use it for discretionary things, not essential purchases such as food or clothing. This lets kids make buying decisions — and mistakes — without dire consequences. You may want to encourage kids to put away a portion for charity and another portion for savings. If so, let them choose where to donate the money. It may be a cause that a child can relate to in some way, like an animal shelter or a group that helps sick kids.If some of the allowance goes to savings, consider setting up an account at a local bank. This way, your child can keep track of the money. Many banks offer special bank accounts for kids, and yours may enjoy the experience of getting mail, even if the mail is a bank statement.Beyond allowanceOnce kids become teenagers, you may want to provide a quarterly clothing allowance in addition to the weekly allowance. If you do, establish a reasonable budget and allow your kids to spend it as they wish — but also to honor its limits. If your son chooses to buy a $95 shirt or your daughter opts for a pricey handbag, for example, they might have to make compromises on other clothing choices.

Bad Food Habits to BreakIf you’re serious about getting healthy, there are some bad habits you need to kick to the kerb. From late night snacking to skipping breakfast, it’s time to turn your bad food habits around and start making some healthy food decisions. Your body and mind will thank you for it!1. Skipping breakfastThis is a non-negotiable part of healthy eating. Ensure you are eating a balanced breakfast with complex carbohydrates, essential fatty acids and quality protein. A balanced meal is key to satiety, stable blood glucose levels and improved concentration.2. Not chewing your food enoughEating is not an Olympic sport, you don’t win a prize if you finish your dinner before everyone else. So, slow down and take the time to chew your food properly. We should aim to chew our food at least 10 times as this allows for the satiety mechanism to kick in which sends the signal our brain that food is on its way.3. using food as a rewardIf you treat food as some kind of rewards program, it changes the way you see it. Food is fuel for your body, simple as that. We’re all for appreciating a tasty meal and savouring it, but it’s important to remember that food is not a way to make you feel better about a bad day or a treat for finishing that report you’ve been dreading. 4. Late night snackingMuch like you’re more efficient during the day than late at night, the same goes for your metabolism. Your metabolism is able to process energy more efficiently during the day when it’s “on” and slows down the later it gets. If you’re feeling a little peckish late at night, opt for a glass of water or a cup of herbal tea instead. 5. Mindless eatingHave you ever noticed how easy it is to polish off an entire bag of chips if you’re not paying attention? Avoid eating in front of the TV and instead aim to eat at the dinner table so you’re able to concentrate on what you’re eating. The more you take your time with your meal, the more you’ll be able to feel when you’re actually full. 6. Huge portion sizesHuge portions aren’t doing your

health or waistline any favours so learn to manage your portion sizes. The ideal plate should be made up of half vegetables, a quarter protein and a quarter carbs. Beware when you’re eating out as the portions tend to be much bigger than what you’d serve yourself at home. 7. eating when you’re stressedWhen we’re stressed, we release chemicals such as adrenalin and cortisol which affects our ability to digest food. This is because “there’s less blood going to your digestive system and it shuts it down.” So avoid turning to food when you’re stressed and instead release the tension by working out or doing some mild meditation and only eat when you’re feeling more calm.8. Not eating enough fruits and vegetablesWe should be eating two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables a day. How many of us can honestly say we’re meeting these targets? To ensure you're eating enough fruit and veg start early in the day by incorporating fruits into your breakfast by having some fruit with yoghurt or mixing some in with your cereal. When it comes to vegetables try to incorporate some salad with your lunch and have some vegetables with your dinner.9. Having too much processed foodIt goes without saying that when it comes to what we eat, we should aim as much as possible to eat foods in their natural state. Sometimes convenience wins out and we turn to quick options but the general rule should be is that if your grandparents would have trouble recognising what you’re eating, then it’s probably best left on the shelves at the supermarket.10. Not planning mealsThe key to eating well is to plan. If you don’t, you’ll be more inclined to turn to quick, high fat food options because you’re starving and you have no idea what to cook. Take some time over the weekend to plan your weekly menu, grab all the ingredients you need and if you’re feeling really organised, start some prep work such as pre-chopping vegetables or marinating meat. When it comes to cooking time you’ll be ready to go with minimum fuss.

Friday Nov 14, 2014www.fijitimescanada.com24 For Women/ Relationship

things Women are ashamed to admit But Shouldn’t Be

No matter how far we’ve come, women will always feel a little (if not a lot!) pressured by society to want certain things, like certain things, condone certain things, disapprove of certain things…you name it. And as the social climate has it today, a lot of women are ashamed to admit the following things, but they shouldn’t be!You would put your family firstToday, unfortunately, women can be viewed as “weak or outdated in their ideas if they would be willing to put their career aside to have a family. We’re expected to somehow still go on about our careers at full force, attending every networking event and chasing every promotion, all while making time for our families. But some women don’t want work to interfere with their family life, and would put it on the back burner. Why that’s okayThe mentality that work should take zero hits for the sake of the family is so backwards. People forget that the reason we work is to establish a stable life from which we can enjoy relationships. So why wouldn’t you put your job on the backburner if you already have that thing we work for so hard—love, family, and solid relationships? Nobody should fault you for wanting to prioritize your family. You don’t want a familyMaybe you don’t want kids at all! Today, people might tell you that you’re “selfish” for that. They might tell you that you should want to work late hours and then go home to spend five more hours cleaning up after children and disciplining them. But maybe you don’t want that. Why it’s okayOnly you can say how valuable anything is to you. If having children isn’t valuable enough to you to be tired all of the time, that doesn’t make you a monster! Oh and there is that whole over population issue so, there is really nothing selfish about you not wanting to put one more person out there who will be using resources. You don’t want to lose weightWhen your friends start swapping dieting tips at lunch and counting the calories in what they’re ordering, you’re supposed to be interested…right? You’re supposed to contribute to the conversation…right? You’re supposed to be grateful for the tips…right? WRONG! Maybe you just don’t care. Why it’s okayNot only would it be okay, it would be great if you spoke up and said to your friends, “Hey, can we keep the body image and dieting talk off the table today? You can all read about that on your own time but some of us don’t need insecurities and worries put in our heads that weren’t there in the first place.”

You don’t care about beauty trendsNew contouring tips, lace-front eyebrows (sigh), the most slimming cut of pants…you’re supposed to jump all over these topics right? Nope. Why it’s okayYou don’t get to see your friends that often if you’re a busy woman. When you get together, if you’d rather spend your precious time talking about real issues like how your relationships are going, or what your dreams and goals are, or even just planning a girls getaway together, that’s fine. In fact, that’s great. Either way, it’s always okay to be the one who puts the breaks on the “Here is how we should all be trying to look better” talk. You want financial helpToday, if a woman isn’t aspiring to make so much money that she would be able to put herself up at the Four Seasons for a month, she is “backwards.” We’re not supposed to accept gifts from men and we’re certainly not supposed to accept help…right? Please. Why it’s okayThere is a difference between looking to be a kept housewife and just looking to get some help! Why wouldn’t you want to meet someone who could split the cost with you on your dream house, instead of you being stuck in a tiny apartment forever? Why wouldn’t you want to meet someone who can chip in on vacations? Life is cheaper when you share the expenses with somebody else! It’s okay to want that.We like a simple lifeBoth men and women face the pressure to want a luxurious life. As a society, we think it’s the norm to have two extra bedrooms in your home. We think shopping is a “hobby.” And if someone isn’t interested in having that, they’re immediately seen as unambitious. Or weird. Why it’s okayIf you are someone who can truly be happy with a simple life, you’re light years ahead of everyone else in finding happiness. Your friends won’t be laughing at you when you have a ton of money saved up because you didn’t splurge for the two extra bedrooms, and you can afford to travel. We like nice thingsSociety just doesn’t know what it wants from us! Women are supposed to aspire to make lots of money but we’re not supposed to cherish nice things. We’re seen as superficial if we spend our savings on a designer bag, and we’re seen as silly if we’ll wait for hours outside a store before they release a limited edition dress. Why it’s okayYou’re allowed to want to treat yourself! You can have a special love for a Louis Vuitton bag and still be a practical, down to earth person. For all people know, you spend $500 on a bag but you also donated $500 to a charity

Compliments Your Man Wants to Hear

Here's a list of things you can say to your man, to let him know that you appreciate him and that he's special

Like the ones from the opposite sex, women are accustomed to receiving compliments - from the random guy at the pub to the street whistler! On the other hand, men rarely get a compliment. So fire off a meaningful compliment to your man and make way for a steaming night ahead.Boy, you can work it!Tell your man how awesome he is in the bedroom - this one definitely ranks at the top of his list! A guy dies to hear how good he is at the skills he works so hard to perfect. What would I do without you?Guys love to feel needed. Whether it is to help you understand bank work or simply open a jam jar — it is one of the greatest feelings for a man that you can't live without them. Cuddle him and tell him it would have been impossible for you to do anything without him.Crave to spend more time with youSometimes you need to connect with

his inner being as well. No matter how much you compliment on his looks or his skills - your efforts will go waste if you don't let him know how much you love him and want to be with him. Tell him that it is his innate characteristics that draw you closer to him.You are excellent at your job!Praising your guy's brain power is a must! Every guy wants to know that he is awesome at his task. Go that extra mile and tell him how much you admire him for the way he shows his dedication and loyalty towards his work. This one will touch him....really!You're so freaking hot! This is one compliment that will instantly lift his spirits. Complimenting a guy on his good looks is okay, but it is a different thing altogether to tell him what makes him so desirable - serve up his accolade, gently touch his body parts to add an extra sizzle to it.

last month. It doesn’t matter what people think your priorities are based on purchases you make: you know what your priorities are.How many people we’ve slept withWomen are judged so much based on how many people we’ve slept with. Decisions are made about our character because of that number. Maybe good decisions, maybe bad ones. If we have a high number we could be seen as slutty, or we could be seen as fun, wild and crazy. If it’s low, we could be seen as a prude, or we could be seen as good and pure. No matter what people think, they’ll think something when they

know your number. But maybe you don’t attach any importance to your number. Why it’s okayHow is our number still important at all?! Sex means something different to everyone. Some women have a low number because they just have a low sex drive! Or had a boyfriend for seven years! Or are insecure about something in the bedroom. Some women have a high number because, hey, they enjoy sex. But, if they met the right guy, they’d be happy to settle down. These examples could go on and on because your number says nothing about who you are.

What Shouldn't Be Said to Curvy Women

Size zero is trendy, but women who don't come under the category are subjected to harsh comments. It's high time people should stop calling them

big or unattractive. We share some of the comments which shouldnt' be used for plus size women:- You should wear black.- Have you ever thought about lap band surgery?- You're big-boned, that's all.- If you ate less, you'd lose the weight.- What happened?- I wish I enjoyed food like you.

- Don't worry, I like thick girls.- Did you gain weight because you're afraid of attracting men? You'd be so pretty if you lost weight.- When are you due?- My friend lost so much weight on this great diet.- You shouldn't wear stripes or polka dots.

Mamta Kulkarni Caught In drug Raid In Kenya, Husband

arrestedOn Thursday, social media was abuzz with news of Mamta Kulkarni's arrest.

Reportedly, the yesteryear actress was taken into custody by the Kenyan police, along with husband Vijay 'Vicky' Goswami, on charges of drug

trafficking. However, Mirror has learnt that while her husband has indeed been arrested after a major drug bust undertaken by the US Drug Enforcement Administration and the National Police Service of Kenya, Mamta was not detained.According to a leading Kenyan daily, the suspects were picked up in Nyali, Mombasa, at the residence of Baktash and Ibrahim Abdalla. The two Kenyan nationals were arrested, along with Goswami and another Indian national, Kulam Hussein. The head of the unit investigating the case, Hamisi Massa, told the local press that the "suspects are liable to charges of conspiracy to traffic narcotic drugs in the US and Kenya and if found guilty, will attract severe penalties."Cliff Ombeta, the lawyer representing the accused, including Goswami, admitted that Mamta was present in the house during the raid, but said that she was not arrested or detained.Speaking from Mombosa, he told Mirror, "The lady was present in the house in Nyali when the police raided it. But no drugs were found there. The police arrested the Abdalla brothers, Vijay Goswami and Kulam Hussein based on an earlier raid in Nairobi. They will be in police custody for 14 days."He added, "The US agencies want to extradite them so the trial can take place in a New York court. We will strongly oppose that."Mirror tried to reach the Kenyan

Director of Public Prosecutions to verify the lawyer's claim, but they chose not to comment.Mamta Kulkarni, who disappeared from the limelight in early 2000s, was traced to Dubai where she married Goswami, an international drug lord. In 1997, Goswami was arrested for drug trafficking and sentenced to 25 years in prison, as per Dubai laws. Owing to good conduct, he was released after 15 years. He then shifted to Nairobi with Mamta, who started a real-estate and hotel business there. When asked if Mamta can be jailed, considering that she is Goswami's wife, Ombeta asserted, "She has nothing to do with the offence. Therefore, she wasn't taken to the police station. She is in her house and absolutely free."

1974 Classic and Controversial garm Hava Re-Releases this Friday

It was an era most of us wouldn't know about. It was of an era most of us wouldn't know about either, but it is about an era that still finds resonance in our political and social fabric. Garm Hava by MS Sathyu is not only a film, it is a social commentary on post-Partition India. The 1974 classic starring Balraj Sahni and Farooq Sheikh is all set to be re-released in theatres this Friday gains a significant importance in the history of Indian cinema for not only for the craft it displays but also for the questions it raised and the controversies that followed.Given the volatile nature of the story, Garm Hava was denied certificate from the Censor Board for the fear of communal tensions. The film could not have seen the light of theatres save for the then PM Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's intervention. Ironically enough, when the film finally released it won the Nargis Dutt National Award for National Integration.

The film traces trials and tribulations of a Muslim family in Agra post-Partition. Balraj Sahni plays Salim Mirza a family-man torn between family aspirations and the need to save his family business and reputation. To make matters worse, Salim Mirza charged with espionage for Pakistan, over sending plans of their former property to his brother in Karachi. Discriminated upon and disillusioned, Salim Mirza decides to move to Pakistan. The movie ends with Mirza resolving his inner battle. The film was made with a shoe-string budget of Rs.10 lakh. Its restoration cost is ten times the budget which took over a year and a half as the negative was badly damaged. Over two lakh frames have been individually treated and the original negative restored. The sound quality has been digitally enhanced at a studio in Los Angeles. It will be released on November 14 on 70 screens in eight metros.

amitabh Narrates Inspiring Story Of Woman KBC Contestant

Bringing out how Indian girls defy adversities to go forward in life, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan narrated the story of a contestant who won Rs.50 lakh at his game show KBC despite her father refusing to spend money on her education. Amitabh, who anchors the popular television game show "Kaun Banega Crorepati", said the young woman came from a very poor background in rural India. "She was very young, she came from a rural area of India - very poor, very disconnected from rest of the world," he said in his inaugural address at the opening of the 20th Kolkata International Film Festival. The mega star, also the United Nations Ambassador for the Girl Child, spoke on the condition of women in the society and their changing roles which have been depicted on the silver screen. He said the girl was allowed to study only up to the seventh standard. But when she wanted to study further, her father refused. "Why should I waste more money on you by educating you further. Because

you are going to get married, and you will be of no use to me," he quoted the father as telling the girl. The girl objected, fought against the family and left the house to stay with her grandmother. But the grandmother treated the girl even worse and made her do all kinds of menial work. However, she continued to educate herself, and landed up in the hotseat at KBC."Ladies and gentlemen, this lady won Rs.50 lakh in the contest," Bachchan proudly announced, as the entire Netaji Indoor stadium reverberated with applause after listening to the real life story of the gritty girl in pin drop silence. "When I asked her what she wanted to do with the money, she said: 'I am going to take this cheque to my father and tell him that a daughter is also an asset to the family'."Turning emotional, Amitabh said the issue of the girl child was very close to his heart."As United Nations Ambassador for the Girl Child, personally, for me this subject then is very close to my heart."

Four days after Don Cherry complained about his time allotment on the air, and two days after he discussed the issue with a high-ranking executive on the phone, the long-time co-host of Coach’s Corner still seems to be a little hot under his high collar.Cherry was promoting his latest book — Straight Up & Personal: The World According to Grapes — on Global Television Wednesday morning, and the hosts of The Morning Show asked him about the weekend incident. He did not mince words.“We think we’ve got it straightened out, but that’s the way it is,” Cherry told the hosts. “The way it’s been on Coach’s Corner … if they don’t want me, fine.”Cherry and co-host Ron MacLean made more than a half-dozen references to their time limit on Saturday

night, during their first intermission appearance for Hockey Night in Canada. The segment — which has run more than 10 minutes in previous years — was cut down to five minutes.“I don’t have much time, as usual, folks,” Cherry said early in the segment.“We over yet?” he asked, sarcastically, a few seconds later.“I gotta talk fast, boy,” Cherry said. “You gotta pay attention to me, because I don’t get much time.”The show remains on the CBC, but Rogers Communications holds editorial control, after winning exclusive Canadian rights to the NHL in a blockbuster deal last year. Rogers has the rights for 12 years, having agreed to pay $5.2-billion in fees, and it has sub-licensed games to the CBC for four years.

Mohammed Kazim elected as Referee's President Fiji Football Referees Association Annual Congress was held at the Nasinu Sangam School last Sunday. This was the deferred Annual Congress which was initially supposed to take place on the 11th of October, 2014 in Suva but was deferred as the FFRA accounts were not audited and the Secretary was not available. The elections for Presidency was between Mohammed Kazim Yasin of Ba and Balram Nair of Tailevu Naitasiri. After voting Mohammed Kazim Yasin was elected as the President. Comments from new Fiji Football Referees Association PresidentI believe my members need to unite and work together as a team in order to progress further. I have mapped out my plans with my Executives on our immediate priorities pertaining to the members. My first task is to hold a face to face meeting with all referees affiliated districts and to get their feedback on the development of referees in their districts. Recruiting of more new referees is one of my top priority. Currently we have about 94 paid members but out of this 94 there are only about 30 active referees who are able to officiate. This is the area I will have to seriously look at. The blooding of new referees is vital in the progress of our Association. Some of our top referees are now nearing retirement and replacements will have to be brought in. The main areas I plan to target to recruit referees is Secondary School students, University Students, Teachers and some retired soccer

players. My plan is also to recruit and introduce more women into refereeing. Currently there are 5 women referees in Fiji out of which 2 are already on FIFA listing. My instructors will also be conducting more and more courses for referees throughout Fiji. We have just gone through an extensive FIFA MA Course in Ba and with the modern teaching materials available our instructors will be able to introduce the modern

teaching methodology provided by FIFA. I also wish to invite all the team officials including coaches to come and take advantage of our instructors in familiarizing themselves with the Laws of the Game. This will surely broaden their knowledge and by doing this we should see a reduction in the number of cautions and red cards players get during matches.I am also calling on all my members to back me up in my campaign to take

this Association to greater heights. This association belongs to all the members and I plead with them to rally behind me and ensure that we make this Association a force to reckon. I am asking all members to forget the past, leave all differences and work together to progress future in refereeing. Religion and race should not be used to tear our Association apart. Let’s get together as a family and strive towards our goal. Our vision is to make sure that our Associations achieve what we are after. I am sure there are people who will always try to tarnish our images but our unity and solidarity will never allow them to do so. I am proud to see that our members are all united. This was evident during the presence of members at our Annual Congress where a record of 54 members attended.I have a vision and I will ensure that my vision is accomplished. I will now work in hand to hand with the Director of Referees, Mr. Sharma to see that the Referees wants and needs are properly addressed. I will also be working very closely with the President and other BOC of Fiji FA especially the Fiji FA Referees Committee to ensure that our members are looked after well. At last I would like to thank all the members present at the Annual Congress and for having the confidence in me to lead the Association. I would also like to thank the CEO of FFA, Mr. Bob Kumar, Vice President FFA Mr. Yogeshwar Singh, the Director of Referees Mr. Sharma and all others who were present during the Annual Congress in making it a success.
