JOHN WOODFounder, Room to Read John Wood left an executive position with Microsoft to found Room to Read in 2000, with the bold goal of reaching 10 million children across the developing world with the lifelong gift of education. In his award-winning memoir, Leaving Microsoft to Change the World, John tells the story of how he and his team raised nearly $200 million of financial commitments from a ‘standing start’ to develop one of the fastest- growing non-profits in history. His latest book, entitled Creating Room to Read: A Story of Hope in the Battle for Global Literacy, tells the story of how

the organization has successfully tackled next steps – including scaling beyond expectations while maintaining integrity and raising money in a collapsing economy. John has been a three-term Board member of the Clinton Global Initiative and was chosen as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. He was named by Goldman Sachs as one of the world’s 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs, and is a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute. In 2014, John and Room to Read were winners of the World’s Children’s Prize awarded by the Queen of Sweden, along with Malala Yousafzai.

SYLVIA DAYMC Sylvia Day is an Ameri-can-Swiss-Brazilian actress,

writer, comedienne, cabaret artist, improv coach, producer, director, singer, pianist and ambas-sador best known for her spot-on accents and hilarious impersonations - of which she has over 50 and counting! Sylvia began her career in Min-neapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota where she attended the University of St. Thomas and received a BA in Speech, Telecommunications and Theater. She trained in improv and sketch writing at Second City in Chicago and Upright Citizens Brigade in New York City. Her holiday show “I’ll Be Home Alone for Christmas!” performed to sell-out crowds in December 2014 in Zurich. In August 2014, her hit solo show “50 Shades of DAY!” had its US premiere at The Acorn Theater, and in Oc-tober 2015 she made her Off-Broadway debut at New York’s highly acclaimed Theatre Row as part of the United Solo Theatre Festival. Two weeks ago, she performed her political comedy “50 Shades of (Election) DAY!” at Kaufleuten in Zurich.

STEFAN PUTTAERTAuctioneer Of Swiss and Belgian origin,

Stefan Puttaert brings strong auction experience and art world knowledge to his appointment as Senior Director and Head of Sotheby’s Zurich office. Beginning his career in 1986, Mr. Puttaert joined an international auction house in 1990, first in London, then in Zurich and Geneva from 1991 to 1995 as Vice President and Director. In 1997, Mr. Puttaert moved into the role of Fine Art Auctioneer, as Executive & Chief Operations Director Switzerland for another important international auction house in Geneva and Zurich. Five years later, Mr. Puttaert started his own gallery with Beda Jedlicka, J&P Fine Art, based in Zurich to deal in Modern and Swiss Art. In 2013, Mr. Puttaert joined Sotheby’s as Senior Director and Head of the Zurich office. His appointment brings a wealth of experience to benefit Sotheby’s across many fields, underlying the importance of Swit-zerland in Sotheby’s global strategy to enhance the client’s experience with knowledge, expertise and proximity to the local market.

ROSHANARAGraduate of Room to Read Girls’ Education Program

Roshanara is a resident of Delhi, India, where she lives in a rented room with her parents and five siblings in Nizamuddin Basti, an urban slum. Her father is a rickshaw puller and her mother a homemaker. Currently Roshanara works as an as-sistant in a doctor’s clinic, giving support for pa-tient treatments, while also pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree at Jamila Milia Islamia University through correspondence courses. Her salary cov-ers the family’s rent as well as her siblings’ school fees, books, uniforms and school supplies.

For Roshanara, pursuing education has been dif-ficult. She has battled against a once unsupportive family, including her mother and grandmother who believed that education spoils girls’ lives. When Roshanara turned 15, her grandmother started pressuring her parents to arrange Ro-shanara’s marriage.

Thankfully early interventions included in Room to Read’s Girls’ Education Program helped Roshanara. The Life Skills classes empowered

Roshanara to firmly express her opposition to getting married so young, and to explain her motivations for pursuing education. Her parents however continued to resist and went ahead with marriage arrangements. Roshanara did not give up and was also provided ongoing support and intervention by her Room to Read Social Mobiliz-er, who helped Roshanara to convince her family to abandon the marriage plan and let her finish secondary school.

Her Social Mobilizer regularly met with Ro-shanara’s parents and kept motivating them by informing them about the importance of girls’ education. Room to Read also covered the cost of her school fees.

Today Roshanara is an active alumnae of Room to Read’s Girls’ Education Program. She eagerly leads events organized in support of girls’ edu-cation and volunteers at community classes, and aspires to complete her Bachelor’s degree to get a better job and improve her family’s future.
