I am going in for surgery, should I receive the sacrament of the anointing of the sick? Who should receive the anointing of the sick? The Catechism is fairly clear on this topic. “The anointing of the sick is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived…It is fitting to receive the Anointing of the Sick just prior to a serious operation. The same holds for the elderly whose frailty becomes more pronounced.” (CCC #1514,1515) Therefore, according to the catechism there must be either “gravity” with an illness, frailty of age, or prep for a surgery in order to receive this sacrament. Thus, it’s not intended for sore backs and stomach aches.

To answer the question more directly, yes you should receive the sacrament before going in for surgery. I would even say, some fairly routine surgeries have the risk of death and thus it would be appropriate to be anointed beforehand.

Why do some parishes have services that offer the anointing to everyone? I would guess that some of the reason that priests offer the anointing to anyone and everyone is that they know this is a sacrament of healing and in some places this sacrament has taken the place of prayers and services of healing. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick carries with it the power to forgive sins as well as the possibility of physical healing. However, the Church, as stated in the Catechism clarifies that it should be for healing for more serious situations where death is a real possibility.

Healing has been one of the charisms of the Church from the earliest days. Naturally, Jesus healed and gave the power of healing to his apostles who healed not only those who were in the danger of death, but also those experiencing chronic illnesses or disabilities. What about these people? If the sacrament is not intended for them, what can we do for those with disabilities or chronic pain for example?

(Warning: my personal opinion) I think that we as a Church should offer more services of healing. While the sacrament of anointing is reserved for special instances, the tradition of the Church gives us sacramentals that are often used in ceremonies of healing and by which many miracles have occurred throughout the centuries. The water from Lourdes, oils from St. Andre Bessett, relics of the true Cross of Christ, to name a few, have been used for healing in our tradition and can be powerful sacramentals that inspire faith and provide healing through God’s grace. Sacramentals aside, we also have many prayers of healing found outside the ritual for Anointing of the Sick that rarely get used.

Nevertheless, with any hope for healing comes the understanding that we too are called to participate in the Redemptive sufferings of Jesus Christ. Sometimes, we are allowed these tests of pain and suffering to communicate to

NOVEMBER 27TH, 2016 ~ FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT others that ultimately we were not made for this world. Let us always pray for healing, but never forget to pray for the strength to accept God’s will and carry our crosses daily.

Between earmarked furnace savings and donations the

amount still owed on the furnace is approximately

$50,782.00)

conditioning.

allowing us to install these two units. Your ongoing

support of total stewardship sharing your gifts of time,

talent and treasure do not go unnoticed. Without your

commitment and dedication to St. Francis of Assisi Parish,

we would not be the viable parish we are. So with grateful

Advent Retreat Adult Opportunity – Join Fr. Jarett and

Bill Meagher as we explore Prayer and host a mini retreat

for Advent. The topic of the retreat will be prayer and how

to hear the Voice of God in our prayers. The retreats will be

National Night of Prayer for Life

Thursday, December 8th from 8pm to 12:00am,

IHM Church will participate in the National

Night of Prayer for Life. The purpose is to unite

our prayers with Catholics throughout the

country in an effort to help bring back the world

to Christ and to bring about an end to abortion. The hours

are chosen to coincide with Our Lady of Guadalupe’s

appearance to Juan Diego. This is a Heartland Parishes of

Ellis County event. For any additional information please

representative to Talitha Kum (Little Girl Arise!), which is

the international Network of Consecrated Life Against

Trafficking in Persons. The goal of Talitha Kum, located in
