Progress Report Here are some pictures of the work being done in our new Pastoral Center (the former Saint Teresa school building). We’ll update as we go.

Clockwise, from top left: New Offices; Pastor’s Office; Gymnasium; Ladies’ Room; Men’s Room; Safety Door.

In Other news: A reminder that this Sunday, November 1, is the Solemnity of

All Saints, when we celebrate all those who rest in the eternal glory of God’s kingdom, including those who are unknown to us and have no specific date on the Church’s cal-endar….And then Monday, November 2, is the feast of All Souls, officially referred to as The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, when we honor all those who have died, especially our loved ones. There will be a Mass at 7 pm at St. Teresa for those of our parish who have died during the past year….Stay tuned for more news….

READINGS for the Solemnity of All Saints First Reading: Revelation 7:2-4,9-14 John describes his vision: those who have endured the trials worship the Lamb. Second Reading: 1 John 3:1-3 We are God's children now. Gospel Reading: Matthew 5:1-12 Jesus teaches what it means to be happy.

Precautions at Communion Please be aware that whenever a priest or deacon touches the communicant during the distribution of Communion, whether on the hand or on the tongue, he will stop to purify his finders, then sanitize them, and finally dry them. This procedure, not unlike physical distancing and wearing masks, is employed to mitigate the risk of transmitting the coronavirus.

National Vocation Awareness Week, celebrated November 1-7, 2020,

is an annual week-long celebration in the United States, dedicated both to promoting vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life through prayer and education and to renewing our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these vocations. Please pray for more dedicated, holy priests, deacons and consecrated men and women. May they be inspired by Jesus Christ, supported by our faith community, and respond generously to God’s gift of a vocation.

O God, who arrange all things according to a wonderful design, graciously receive the prayers we pour out to you for our country, that, through the wisdom of its leaders and the integrity of its citizens, harmony and justice may be assured and lasting prosperity come with peace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. (The Roman Missal, no. 21, p. 1286)

Gathering Hymn: For All the Saints 1. 1. For all the saints who from their labors rest, who you by faith before the world confessed, Your Name, O Jesus, be forever blest, Alleluia, alleluia! 2. 2. O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; Yet all are one within your great design. Alleluia, alleluia! 3. 3. But lo! There breaks a yet more glorious day; the saints triumphant rise in bright array; The King of Glory passes on his way. Alleluia, alleluia! Text: 10 10 10 with alleluias; William W. How, 1823-1897,alt. Music: The English Hymnal, 1906; Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1872-1958.

Responsorial Psalm: We Long to See Your Face REFRAIN: O God, this is the people that longs to see your face. O God, this is the people that longs to see your face. 1. 1. All the earth is yours, O God, the world and those who dwell in it. You have founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. 2. 2. Who can ascend your mountain, God? Or who can stand in this holy place? Those whose hands are sinless, hearts are clean, and desire not the vanity of earth. 3. 3. They shall receive your blessing, God, their Savior shall reward them. Such is the face that seeks for you, that seeks your face, O God of Jacob. Text: Psalm 24: 1-2, 3-4, 5-6; Kevin Keil, © 1993, GIA Publications, Inc.; refrain 1 trans. © 1969, ICEL. Preparation of the Altar: I Want to Walk As a Child of the Light 1. 1. I want to walk as a child of the light. I want to follow Jesus. God set the stars to give light to the world. The star of my life is Jesus. (Refrain) REFRAIN: In him there is no darkness at all. The night and the day are both alike. The Lamb is the light of the city of God. Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus. 2. 2. I want to see the brightness of God. I want to look at Jesus. Clear sun of righteousness shine on my path and show me the way to the Father. Distribution of Holy Communion: Worthy Is the Lamb

REFRAIN: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive honor and glory. Worthy are the ones who believe to receive the goodness of God.

1. Worthy are you, O Paschal Lamb. Wisdom and strength belong now to you. You laid down your life and died upon the cross: we’ve become a people of hope. (Refrain)

2. Worthy are you, O Bread of Life. Salvation and joy belong now to us. By conquering death and rising to new life, we’ve become a people of praise. (Refrain)

3. Worthy are you, O Risen Christ. Wonders and signs, revealing your might. Your power and glory shine upon our lives; we’ve become your light for the world. (Refrain) Text: Based on Revelation 5:9-14. Text and music © 1997, Ricky Manolo, CSP. Published by Spirit & Song®, a division of OCP. All rights reserved.

Distribution of Holy Communion 2: Be Not Afraid

1. 1. You shall cross the barren desert, but you shall not die of thirst. You shall wander far in safety though you do not know the way. You shall speak your words in foreign lands and all will understand. You shall see the face of God and live. (Refrain)

REFRAIN: Be not afraid. I go before you always. Come follow me and I will give you rest.

2. 2. If you pass through raging waters in the sea, you shall not drown. If you walk amid the burning flames, you shall not be harmed. If you stand before the pow’r of hell and death is at your side, Know that I am with you through it all. (Refrain)

3. 3. Blessed are your poor, for the kingdom shall be theirs. Blest are you that weep and mourn, for one day you shall laugh. And if wicked tongues insult and hate you all because of me, Blessed, blessed are you! (Refrain) Text: Based on Isaiah 43:2-3; Luke 6:20ff. Text and music © 1975, 1978, Robert J. Dufford, SJ, and OCP. All rights reserved.

Sending Forth: Holy God, We Praise Thy Name

1. 1. Holy God, we praise thy name; Lord of all, we bow before thee! All on earth thy scepter claim, all in heav’n above adore thee; Infinite, thy vast domain, everlasting is thy reign. Infinite, thy vast domain, everlasting is thy reign.

2. 2. Hark! The loud celestial hymn angel choirs above are raising; Cherubim and Seraphim, in unceasing chorus praising; Fill the heavens with sweet accord: “Holy, holy, holy Lord!” Fill the heavens with sweet accord: “Holy, holy, holy Lord!”

VOTE!

The Catechism of the Catholic Church devotes an entire section to the roles of authority and citizens. Duties for citizens include paying taxes, voting and

defending ones country, all in support of the common good. (CCC 2234 thru 2246) So if you have not already done so, exercise your faith and your right to vote this Tuesday!

Help Feed the Needy for

Thanksgiving!

There are individuals and families within our parish and nearby areas who will not share a traditional Thanksgiving meal without your help. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul encourages everyone to bring donations of non-perishable foods to Masses during the weekend of November 14-15. Items will be distributed to needy families by the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry at St. Sebastian. Please check the expiration dates beforehand and place your donations in the decorated baskets or food bins at Incarnation of the Lord, St. Athanasius, St. Sebastian and St. Teresa Churches. Since local supermarkets no longer give away free turkeys, you may consider a donation for the purchase of certificates that will be given to needy families to buy their turkeys. If you wish to donate $10 for a certificate, please complete the form below, enclose it with your donation in an envelope marked “Thanksgiving Certificate,” and drop it in the collection basket at any Our Lady of Mount Carmel Masses during the weekend of November 14-15, or drop it off at the St. Sebastian Office by Monday, November 16, 2019 marked St. Vincent de Paul Food Drive. Thank you for your outstanding generosity in helping the needy during this holiday season!

Please return this portion with your donation

I/We are happy to donate $10.00 to purchase a turkey certificate for a needy family. We are grateful that we are able to help and enclose our donation of cash or check made payable to St. Vincent de Paul. Name: ________________________________________________

Faith Formation Blest are We – Children of God. Breaking Open the Word: Matthew 5:1-12

The Beatitudes: Here Jesus describes the life of a saint as one filled with blessings. But the bless-ings are not necessarily what the world would

consider good. Saints are those whom God has chosen and blessed with his gifts.

Listen to the Word: The challenge today is to really listen to the beatitudes with a ‘fresh’ ear. What took you by surprise with the proclamation of the Beatitudes? Is there one word that is lingering in your consciousness? Look into Your Life: Children: When have you become a peacemaker? Among your friends? In your family? At school? Other times? Youth: All Saints Day gives us a chance to remember the saints of our Church and of our lives. Who are the people who have been saints in your life? Adults: When you heard the Beatitudes today, which one did you hear most clearly as a summons for your own life?

Incarnate the Word: Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect and incarnate the Sun-day readings: as members of the Church we are called to live the faith we profess. Live your faith today through a kind word, an offer of help, a smile, or a hug. Sometimes our religious observance can deteriorate into “going through the motions,” with no real love motivating them. As a family, discuss the call to follow Christ in sincerity.

Deacon Robert Koslosky

An inspiring film on Saint Pope John XXIII, starring Ed Asner in an ac-

claimed performance as the beloved pontiff, who came from common stock

and was known for simplicity, courage, and love for the people. This movie

tells the whole life story of Saint John, the “interim pope” from his youth

through his young priesthood, episcopacy, life as a cardinal, and eventually as

pope. This film underscores his wonderful sense of humor and great charity

towards others, especially the poor and the down trodden and the outcast.

Saint Pope Paul VI was a leader in the Catholic Church as a priest, bishop, cardinal, and pope through one

of the most difficult periods in its history – from the Fascist regime and WWII to the constitution of the Italian

Republic, from the Second Vatican Council to the protests and the terrorist attacks of the 1960s and 1970s.

Paul VI was a pope who opened a dialogue among religions, visiting Jerusalem

and the Holy Land, for the first time. This exciting and insightful film covers fifty

years of history that changed the Catholic Church and the world. Paul VI: The

Pope Tempest is a story that draws emotion and lessons from history itself, dra-

matically mixing stunning reconstructions and real film footage.

Worship

Welcome, RCIA Candidates! I can’t think of a better ‘make-up’ day to fully receive our RCIA candidates into the Church than All Saints Day. Sure, the very best day is during the great celebration of the Easter Vigil, but since that couldn’t happen this year due to the pandemic, All Saints Day definitely takes second prize.

Why is this day such a great second choice? Several things happen during the Liturgy of Initiation at the Easter Vigil that make a direct connection to this particular solemnity. First, before anyone can be baptized, we call down the saints during the Litany of the Saints. This litany marks the very beginning of the Liturgy of Initiation. Second, during Confirmation, the Confirmandi state their chosen name which is usually selected or modeled after one of the saints. If you really think about it, this means that we cannot receive anyone into the Church at the Easter Vigil without first calling on our heavenly friends. And once someone is received into the Church, they are called to live a saintly life just like the rest of us.

Welcome, RCIA Candidates! You are now fully received into the Church and the life of this parish community. We celebrate and rejoice with you!

Votive Candles One of the benefits of merging parishes is also merging orders for liturgical supplies. When bulk orders are placed, the parish as a whole saves money. Think of it in terms of buying household items at Sam’s Club or Costco. You know that the more you buy, the more you save on each item. Votive candles are no different. Currently, all four of our churches have four different types of votive candles. They are all different in size, shape, and color. Even the type of wax is different in each candle. Some have plastic inserts (called a plastic drop) while others have glass. Some have open tops while others have beveled tops. Some use a shrink wrap to create the color inside the glass while others use a colored plastic drop.

All of these various types of candles also come with various prices, and a few of them are rather expensive. The current donation to light a large candle is $3.00. In an effort to keep the cost where it is, we are standardizing all of the votive candles in our four churches. You will see the votive candles change over within the next week or two to a large solid glass white candle. This will keep the cost down for all of us and ensure that the $3.00 donation price will remain the same. We are grateful to Eastern Oil for giving us the best price per candle, and for giving us credit on recycling all of the glass after the candles burn down.

In addition, we hope to expand the number of votive candle racks at St. Athanasius and St. Teresa of Avila where we seem to have a shortage of candles at times. Stay tuned...

Solemnity of All Saints The Gospel today presents a prescription for a saintly life. With the Beatitudes, Jesus taught his disciples how they would be blessed. As we listen to today’s readings, let us pray for God’s grace in becoming poor in spirit, clean of heart, and hungry for righteousness, among the other prescriptions Jesus lays out for us as his disciples. God has bestowed on us all that we need to achieve this. In the saints, we have heavenly friends, so we should not hesitate to call on them to help us reach our heavenly goal. Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Holy Cross Academy

The fifth graders were definitively excited to return to school this September. Most are in the physical classroom and thoroughly enjoy being together again despite masks, shields, and social distancing. The

virtual students are our “television stars” and actively engage in the daily lessons via the computer and big screen. Math, language arts,

social studies, science, and especially religion are integral parts of our daily learning routines. Diligently working on learning about the lives of saints, the fifth graders will “become” saints for a day in early November and share their life stories within the school during the Museum of Traveling Saints. In addition to our studies, the students recently carved pumpkins to immerse in the Halloween spirit and show their creativity. Fifth grade is making the most of being together again in school…learning and growing spiritually and intellectually, as well as having fun. The following are the words chosen collectively to describe who they are as fifth graders at Holy Cross. F...faithful, fun, fantastic, forgiving G…grateful, giving, good, God’s grace I…intelligent, imaginative, inspired, R…religious, responsible, reverent, including, respectful A…amazing, athletic, active, awesome F…friendly, fair, fabulous, family D…dedicated, delightful, determined T…thankful, trustworthy, thoughtful, disciples team E…excellent, exciting, equal H…helpful, humble, hopeful, hard evangelists
